Yesterday was a relatively big day for Android, at least compared to our regularly scheduled programming - Google sent us a gift in the form of the 4.4.3 update, available immediately via factory images and in AOSP. The problem with factory images, however, is that they require an unlocked bootloader to flash, so many of you opt in to wait for the respective OTAs.

The first such OTA has just arrived - it's for the 2013 Nexus 7 Wi-Fi (not for LTE yet), also known as Razor.

Note: You have to be on Android 4.4.2 (KOT49H) for this OTA to succeed.

Download: signed-razor-KTU84L-from-KOT49H.df43279b.zip

File size: 73.8MB

MD5: 599f478fd9e0efa61467ddb63c4f799a

If you're not familiar with the manual installation process, proceed to this guide for an earlier update, and you'll be set up with Android 4.4.3 in no time. I just flashed my N7 from 4.4.2 to 4.4.3 all in about 5 minutes.

What's new: To get a better idea of what's new in Android 4.4.3, hit up this post and check out the updated Dialer.

            No mm-qcamera-daemon fix yet.
There are still some problems with connections.

          • siddude11

            All fine for me.

FCC Compliance fix? No more Nexus 4 LTE?

          • Crispin Swickard

Hope the email fixes stop the duplicate email notifications I have been experiencing, and the BT, and data dropouts on LTE. I hear they may, or may have not been fixed on the latter 2.

Is ART the default runtime now?

Any news on the Nexus 5 OTA?

      • http://www.westagemusic.com/ Marc

okay, but is it smoother than before? :)

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I just got my N7 from ASUS after an RMA, and it's pretty much bone stock. So I can't really test properly.

        • whispy_snippet

My initial impression of 4.4.3 is that it feels smoother than the previous version. Even scrolling in this very page feels smoother when assets and elements are still loading up. Placebo? Possibly. But it's definitely not worse.

  • Alexandre Leites

Hope this fix the sound issue that I have with my Nexus 7. It just loose the sound without any explanation, need to reboot or wait it come back again (can never happen util reboot).

    • offshore tiger

Me too, I have had this problem for many months now

      • offshore tiger

Still broken sound. As above it will just stop emitting any noises until rebooted, although doesn't seem as frequent between failures as before the update. Are we the only ones with this problem, as Google searches don't help, surprisingly!

Any news on the Nexus 4 OTA?

    • siddude11

      Why not flash factory img?

      • Guest

My bootloader is locked, so my data will be wiped if I do so... :/

        • siddude11

          backup your data?

          • Guest

Easier to just wait for the OTA zip file and sideload it as Jens Holst Schumacher suggested. That's what I've done with the past updates.

        • Henrique Persechini

Are you rooted? if yes, you can use the app bootunlocker to unlock your bootloader without wiping, and just as easily after the update lock it again

          https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.segv11.bootunlocker

      • Jens Holst Schumacher

why unlock and wipe when you can sideload the ota?

  • Billy Presley

    Uhhh, isn't the N7 2013 the Flo?

    • Akshay Mehta

      yes it is.

  • godutch

    Any changelog yet?

  • Akshay Mehta

i'm not able to update my Nexus 7(2013) Wifi only model to 4.4.3. Every time i try to sideload the update i get an error which says E;Error executing updater in binary. I am on twrp 2.7.0.0 Can anyone help ?

    • Anthony Dos Santos

      Same here.

      • bunnybash

I get an error too. I think I am on stock kernel too,

        • Stephen Lebed

I just installed it on my stock N7-2013 and its working fine. I'm switching over to ART to see if anything breaks.

  • a671

just a quick question : I'm on stock 4.4.2 with twrp modified (multirom but without an other rom) + xposed. Will i received the OTA ? thanks for your answer

    • br_hermon

Will you receive it? Yes. Will it successfully install? No.

  • whispy_snippet

Posting from my 2013 N7 with 4.4.3. Cheers AP!

  • bunnybash

I am on TWRP 2.6.3.1 and I am getting an error every time I try to sideload it. I checked and the MD5 checksums match up.

file_getprop: failed to stat "/system/build.prop": N (not sure what it says here, it's off screen)
    Error flashing zip 'sdcard/094f66... etc

Anyone got any clues what is causing this.

I am running stock kernel and on KOT49H at the moment too. Help??

    • Guest

Use the newer version of TWRP.I recommend version 2.7.x.x

      • bunnybash

I updated to 2.7.0.0 and still the same error

        • Aravind Arsenal

I too had this problem,so I flashed the factory image of 4.4.3 after removing the wipe part from the flash all file ,that worked even though I had to download the more than 400 mb

          • bunnybash

Thank you for the suggestion! Where would I find out how to remove the wipe part of the zip?

          • Aravind Arsenal

It's not in the zip,it would be along with the files which you will get after downloading the factory image from here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#razorsome 400+ Mb)it's something called flash all.bat,on a pc,right click it and select edit, and then find the word wipe all(i don't clearly remember the word),then flash it.If you have no idea what I'm talking about, Google it

          • bunnybash

Actually could the issue be that I am using Xposed?

          • Sbd01

I'm using Xposed as well and encountering the same issue. But I'm not sure if the two are correlated.

          • jj14x

Yes. If you are using Xposed, go into the XPosed app/settings and uninstall from there (don't uninstall the XPosed app itself from android settings). That will restore the original process.jar that was on 4.4.2.
The update is failing because the process.jar is different than what it expects.

Once that is done, sideload should work just fine.

          • bunnybash

Thanks so much!!! I went through that process and noticed that it does indeed seem to be the cause! I appreciate your help!!!!

          • bunnybash

Lol... it did work fine... till it gave me another error!!!

            error this time is

            /system/bin/dalvikvm has unexpected contents

          • jj14x

That likely means that you have changed something else in the system partition. Basically, if you changed/deleted anything from the system partition, you have to revert that change. If you know what you changed, and have that file backed up, you can revert it back.

Else, get back to stock (without wiping your user data) - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/info-nexus-5-ota-help-desk-t2523217 Scenario D

          • abhi

same problem ! I dont recall what I changed .. Not manually for sure. I use custom kernel but that wont change this file.. How did you solve this ?

          • Paul Taylor
          • tharealoc

Thanks, this helped me out as well!

          • Aravind Arsenal

Actually any change in system, mister zip will not flash :)

          • bunnybash

Yeah I just discovered that apparently something else I have done has changed the Dalvik... might just wait this one out... I can't be bothered restoring everything the way I like it and it doesn't seem like the update offers that much on the N7.

I didn't realise it was this freakin difficult just to update!!!

          • jj14x

Follow the link I provided in my earlier post - that will not wipe your user data, and will get you upgraded to 4.4.3

            Just re-root, nbd.

  • whispy_snippet

I'm getting some very concerning behaviour with my Bluetooth headphones with 4.4.3. I keep getting cut outs and blips. It's not good.

    • Josh Crumley

Try repairing that happened with me on another update.

      • whispy_snippet

        Repairing?

        • Josh Crumley

Un-pair and re-pair the device in bluetooth settings. Sorry, repair sounds weird :p

          • whispy_snippet

Ah, I see what you mean. Unfortunately I tried doing that with no success. Same issues. I can barely get through a single track on Google Play Music without a skip or stutter.

This is definitely not looking good.

          • Josh Crumley

Ouch.. That is unfortunate. :/ Was hoping they fixed Bluetooth for good this time without creating more bugs.

          • whispy_snippet

The thing is, I barely suffered any Bluetooth issues prior to the update.

          • whispy_snippet

            Further developments.

I tried re-pairing my Bluetooth headphones via NFC rather than through the conventional method. So far, playback is smooth and hasn't missed a beat. That said, I also gave my headphones a charge overnight so it's possible this was the issue too! Hopefully this is the end of the problems because this 4.4.3 update has brought some notable performance gains and bug fixes.

          • Cameljok

After updating to 4.4.3 on my Nexus 5, music routes to speaker instead of Bluetooth. I tried NFC pairing and still no success. I called Google hardware support and they said people are calling in with Bluetooth issues. He said they will track the amount of open service tickets regarding this issue and have the development team work on a fix. He said do a factory reset but I am glad I didn't b/c that doesn't seem to fix it. I had no Bluetooth issues on 4.4.2. Can't rollback to 4.4.2. I wish there was a fix.

          • whispy_snippet

I did a factory reset and it didn't fix the issue either. Although about a day things seemed to improve. I'll need more testing but in gonna hold off updating my N5 for the time being.

          • matej1990

I have the same BT problems on my Nexus 7 (2013)... prior to this 4.4.3 update my BT was working flawless, but now it's useless! Sound popping and cutoffs via BT are extremely annoying. I tried unpairing and repairing, but the problem is still the same. Then I did factory reset and again nothing is fixed. It's definitely BT problem, because listening music through built in tablet speakers works perfect.
They need to fix this problem ASAP. Hope 4.5 ot 5.0 will fix this mess... ;(

          • whispy_snippet

Yeah it totally sucks. The only positive is that the problem seems to be shared by others meaning it's likely to be addressed by Google asap.

          • n7user

Does anyone have a link to the BT audio problem ticket or bug report at google.com?

          • whispy_snippet

Any further developments on this from anyone? I'm extremely pissed. Bluetooth is borderline unusable on my Nexus 7 on 4.4.3. I just bought a brand new set of Bluetooth headphones prior to the update as well so this is doubly frustrating.

          • matej1990

Nope... i basically stopped using my N7, because it's almost totally useless to me without BT functioning. Once you go wireless it's hard to go back (to wired =) ). I'm waiting for G I/O and next Android version.

          • Jack215

Try switching to a 2.4ghz network instead of 5ghz. I had the same problems and it fixed it for me.

          • matej1990

Thanks for the tip, but I just turned on my N7 and connected my BT headphones and everything is working normally. O_0
When I have had BT problems I have turned tablet off and on at least 7 times + 1 factory reset. I have no idea what is going on. -_- And wifi band is still 5GHz.

          • whispy_snippet

            Yes! Same!

          • whispy_snippet

Are you connected to 2.4ghz or 5ghz WiFi during Bluetooth use? Or are you only using local files?

          • matej1990

On the tablet I'm using 5GHz wifi all the time (also during BT use) and I'm always streaming my media (YouTube, Plex, Play Music,...). I have no local videos or music files on my android devices.

When Jack 215 mentioned his solution I first tried to repeat my BT issues without any wifi or tablet changes. I couldn't do it, at least not in that scale and I was using the same 5GHz wifi band.
As mentioned before BT was unusable. I couldn't go through one Play Music song without heavy cutoffs and even slowmotion playing. The same was with Plex. After 1 minute network streamed video was unwatchable (sound and video in slow motion and sometimes sound cutouts). YouTube was little better (no slow motion) but still very annoying (cca 2s cutoffs every minute or so). None of these issues ever happened with BT turned to off and still on the same 5GHz wifi band!
Now I discovered that my BT issues were not completely gone (BT is not working as good as on Android 4.4.2.) and I'm still using the same 5GHz wifi band. YouTube still has some cutoffs, but only for few milliseconds every 5 minutes or so. Something similar is happening in Play Music an Plex, but every 10 minutes. I'm happy the way it's working now compared to previous behaviour. :)
I didn't have enough time to test 2.4GHz wifi, but today I will try it. Maybe it performs completely without BT issues. :D

          • whispy_snippet

Definitely give 2.4ghz a go. It completely resolved my issues.

          • matej1990

I can confirm the same result. 2.4GHz completely removed all my BT issues.
Thanks Jack215 and whispy_snippet for help!

          • whispy_snippet

            Excellent! :)

Hopefully Google addresses the 5ghz WiFi issue quickly.

          • matej1990
          • whispy_snippet

Hopefully, but it sounds like it's just security fixes rather than bug fixes.

          • Cameljok

            UPDATE
So I decided to try the factory reset and before all of my apps started
restoring, I paired my Bluetooth headset then opened the Play Music app
and started a song from the radio. It broadcast the song to my Bluetooth
headset so it seems that the factory reset fixed that issue. I will
check it again after all of the apps have restored and my phone is setup
back to the way it was. If it is working after full restore, then the
factory reset fixed the Bluetooth bug for me. I know others have said a
factory reset did not fix their issues. I will keep my eye out for
            others issues as well.

            Thanks..

          • whispy_snippet

            Good to hear.

I've had some positive developments as well. While I'd still like to do more testing I reckon I've worked out that my issue with 4.4.3 isn't actually Bluetooth - it's with 5ghz WiFi.

In the past I've always connected my devices to 5ghz WiFi because it doesn't interfere with Bluetooth like 2.4ghz WiFi does (as you probably well know). After I first updated my Nexus 7 and started using it as I always had, I kept getting sync issues and stutters through my Bluetooth headphones. I immediately assumed this to be a Bluetooth bug with 4.4.3. However, last night I decided to give 2.4ghz WiFi a thorough test and lo and behold, I've had no Bluetooth issues. Smooth, stutter free play back with no drop outs. No interference either. All very unusual.

With confidence that I'd worked out the issue I then proceeded to update my Nexus 5. No Bluetooth issues to report so far either. So, I can now use my devices pretty much as normal again. However, I do wonder whether 5ghz WiFi and Bluetooth might be a little messed up...

          • whispy_snippet

Nope, Bluetooth is definitely fucked. Completely. I even did a factory reset and I'm still getting a hiccup or stutter at least once a song on GPM. I've had skipping audio issues while streaming video as well.

This is extremely disappointing. I'll be holding off on updating my Nexus 5 to 4.4.3.

Anyone know if the Bluetooth turns on when you turn your phone. After 4.4.3 update? I hate how it does that with 4.4.2.

    • Crispin Swickard

Are you running on a nexus phone? I haven't seen that problem on stock, or on CM.

      • AnthonyRyan89

yeah i have the nexus 5 and nexus 7 LTE and they both do it. Bluetooth will turn on when i turn the devices back on.

        • Crispin Swickard

You sure some app is not turning it on? Although if that is happening it should have a notification come up saying which app was doing it though.

you can flash the factory image, without data wipe (AP's guide), this will make it completely stock 4.4.3. You may modify it after

Already asked to chainfire for a flash tool for Nexus... Hope some day he make it one :-)

        • Crispin Swickard

There is the Nexus root toolkit it pretty much is just that. I have used it on many (Most to date) Nexus devices. I had been using it for a while before I realized you can sideload OTAs with it. I am watching AP intently for the OTA file for the N5 so I can flash it with NRT. :) My N7 has CM on it. they will probably have this folded in shortly.
