Android Police coverage: [New App] Francisco Franco Brings Paranoid Android's Peek Feature To All 4.4 Devices With Standalone Peek App [Update]

Previously featured on the Paranoid Android family of custom ROMs, Peek is basically an aftermarket version of Motorola's Active Display feature on the Moto X. When you get a notification and pick up your phone, Peek will automatically turn your screen on and show you a preview, allowing you to open the relevant app immediately or dismiss it. It works with multiple notifications at once, which Active Display can't do, but it also only activates for 10 seconds after a new notification comes in. You'll need Android 4.4 to try it.

This application is a complete redesign of the known "Peek" feature by ParanoidAndroid project, built to work on any 4.4+ ROM. The whole concept lies into allowing users to quickly interact with their notifications, without having to press any button. The new design includes sharper typography, nicer placement of the items, breathtaking new effects and extended functionality (including blacklist). It works on secure locked devices, with the ability to customize what information to show.

Autotext PhraseExpress

Android Police coverage: [New App] Time-Saving Windows Software PhraseExpress Hits Android Ready To Give Your Thumbs A Breather

Using a virtual keyboard is never going to be a great experience, but PhraseExpress aims to make it a little better. This Windows expatriate allows you to enter long words or phrases linked to text shortcuts - it's kind of like the autofill feature in most browsers, but much, much more customizable. The free app lets you save 25 phrases (which is probably all most people will need), but unlimited use will cost you $5.

Insert frequently used phrases which can be selected from a handy popup menu. The Text Expander can also expand Autotext shortcuts into large chunks of text. ANNOUNCEMENT: We are working on an update that allows you to use PhraseExpress with the favorite (swipe) keyboard of your choice. Stay tuned.

● Handy phrase popup menu.
● Autotext functionality.
● Productivity statistics.
● Save up to 25 phrases.
● Free for non-commercial use.
● Works on Tablets and Smartphones.

● Create unlimited number of phrases.
● Create unlimited number of folders and organize your phrases in a custom tree structure.
● Disable the statistic to increase space in the popup menu.● Commercial use allowed.

Sunrise Calendar

Android Police coverage: [New App] iOS Favorite Sunrise Calendar Comes To Android, Complete With Actual Android Features

There are a handful of "beautiful" calendars that have made the jump from iOS to Android, but none have done so quite as gracefully as Sunrise. In addition to integration with social network contacts and Google Maps, it managed to have Real Android Features at launch, like a homescreen widget and expandable notifications. The nicest thing about Sunrise is probably the nifty combined agenda/two week view, and the worst is probably the lack of Exchange support and a tablet UI.

Sunrise is a free calendar made for Google Calendar and iCloud*. With an amazing design, Sunrise is a new experience that will make your life easier. Please note that support for Exchange and Tablet is coming soon.

addappt: up-to-date contacts

Android Police coverage: [New App] Addappt Hits Android With Promise Of Privately Synced, Always Up-To-Date Contacts

Google's got contacts down for the most part - you don't have to mess with desktop syncing or copying to and from SIM cards anymore. But when your friend's phone number or email address changes, there's not a whole lot Google can do until they update it themselves. Addappt solves that with two-way, continuously-updated contacts for both you and the other party. One downside: both you and the contact in question need to be verified and using the app for it to work.

addappt is your always up-to-date address book that updates instantly when friends change their contact information on their phone. Founded by early Microsoft and LinkedIn employees, addappt's iPhone app has been recognized by Walt Mossberg of the WSJ, NYT, Forbes, ABC, CNN, Business Insider, ZDNet, The Economic Times and as one of Business Insider's Top Business Apps, one of Business Insider's Best Productivity Apps and ZDNet's Best iOS Apps.

Android Police coverage: [New App] Secret Is Now Out For Android, So Feel Free To Share Your Thoughts - We Won't Judge

Psst. Can you keep a secret? Well so can I, which is why I'm not telling you about the Sony Nexus 14 Ultimate Edition (with a Snapdragon 900 and Android 5.0) I've been playing with under NDA. But if you've just got to share secrets (AKA gossip) with your buddies, Secret is for you. It pulls in contacts from your phone and shows you what other people are sharing, and you can share too... but everything is anonymous, including the poster, comments, and likes. It's unique, and at least somewhat safe... if you're careful never to include anything that could identify you.

Secret is a new way to share what you’re thinking and feeling with your friends.

  • Write anything that’s on your mind, free of judgment.
  • Make your words stand out by adding a photo or color backdrop. Customize further with blur, textures, and moods.
  • Comment on your friends’ secrets with a new and unique avatar for each conversation.
  • When friends like your secret, it spreads to their friends. The most interesting secrets can travel around the world.

Android Police coverage: [New App] Official Klout App Hits Android To Recommend Sharable Content That Will Make You Seem More Interesting Than You Actually Are

Full disclosure: I hate Klout. It's a completely artificial and arbitrary system that gives people fake self-worth based on exposure - basically, a better-organized version of People Magazine. But if you're a fan, or if your profession depends on it, there's now an Android app that ties directly into the social ranking service. Some of the more useful features include scheduled social posts and suggested content.

Klout helps people be known for what they love. You can easily find, create and share content that resonates with your audience - and then track your success using the Klout Score. Klout analyzes the world’s largest collection of cross-network social data to make personalized content recommendations that help you become a better content creator. By sharing great content, you can enhance your reputation and grow your online influence.

PhonoPaper lets you translate sounds into a visual, printable representation, then play it back. The camera interface displays a single line which plays the sounds back through your speakers - you know, like a phonograph or a music box. (Watch the video.) It's an interesting way to hide messages in a representation that can't be decoded without the app, but the playback is too distorted and inconsistent to be used for serious transmission or preservation. On the plus side, it needs no Internet connection.

PhonoPaper is:
• format of graphical representation of the sound (music, human voice, etc.); in other words, it is the 2D audio barcode (by analogy with the QR-code);
• real-time PhonoPaper-code reader (using the camera);
• PhonoPaper-code generator (sound to image converter).

Key features:
• PhonoPaper-code is analogue, so it is not so sensitive to different types of the image distortion (bad camera, dark picture, wrinkled paper, etc.); at least you will hear the "silhouette" of the original sound;
• PhonoPaper does not require access to the network; its code is self-contained;
• PhonoPaper-code can be played in real-time with hand-controlled speed and direction;
• PhonoPaper-code can be drawn by hand (paper version of the Virtual ANS synth);
• PhonoPaper is free.

WATCH Disney Channel

Android Police coverage: [New Apps] Disney Releases Trio Of Full Episode Streaming Apps For The Disney Channel, Disney Jr, And Disney XD

Disney published three apps this week, all of them being the usual portals for full episodes, clips, simple games, and other detritus that gets thrown into these network featured apps. Surprisingly, this includes a live feed of the channel and Radio Disney. With all three of them, you'll need to subscribe to cable or satellite television in order to watch full episodes, a la HBO Go and others. (Strangely, DirecTV is not supported. Most other major television providers are.) This app is the "classic" Disney Channel, these days overrun with squeaky-clean live-action sitcoms aimed at preteens.

WATCH Disney Channel is a free app that allows you to watch full episodes, clips and more of your favorite Disney Channel shows on your tablet, phone or computer. If you subscribe to Disney Channel through one of our participating TV providers, you will have access to the following:

• Watch full episodes of your favorite shows anytime, anywhere.*
• Watch what’s on Disney Channel LIVE.*
• Play new games featuring some of your favorite Disney Channel stars**
• Listen to music on Radio Disney right in the app

WATCH Disney Junior

Disney Jr. is basically The Mouse's copy of Nick Jr., with cartoons catering towards kids under 5. (I suppose. Some grown men seem to enjoy My Little Pony, so what do I know.) All the basics from the primary Disney Channel app are here as well.

WATCH Disney Junior is a free app that allows kids to watch full episodes, clips and games of their favorite Disney Junior shows on a tablet, phone or computer. If you subscribe to Disney Junior through one of our participating TV providers, you will have access to the following:

• Watch full episodes of your favorite shows anytime, anywhere.*
• Watch what’s on Disney Junior LIVE.*
• Play new games featuring some of your favorite Disney Junior characters
• Listen to music on Radio Disney right in the app

And Disney XD is the one that still shows "real" kid's cartoons and some-live action shows, mostly for kids 7 and up. Again, it has full streaming, live TV, and games, though this one seems to omit Radio Disney for some reason.

WATCH Disney XD is a free app that allows you to watch full episodes, clips and play games of your favorite Disney XD shows on your tablet, phone or computer. If you subscribe to Disney XD through one of our participating TV providers, you will have full access to the following:

• Watch full episodes of your favorite shows anytime, anywhere.*
• Watch what’s on Disney XD LIVE.*
• Play new games featuring some of your favorite Disney XD stars
