Sony has announced the Xperia A2 in Japan, where it will be available for NTT DoCoMo. This is the phone that could potentially be branded as the Z2 Compact if it ships internationally, though it's far more similar to the Z1 Compact in power and size than the Z2. This device appears to be more about offering a more affordable offering than the same device in a smaller package.

The water and dust resistant Xperia A2 has a 4.3-inch display, a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon MSM8974 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage supplemented by a microSD card slot. It has a 20.7MP camera on the back, a 2.2MP shooter on the front, and a 2300mAh battery powering it all. The handset will come in five colors: lavender, orange, gray, black, and white.

    I'm so excited there's a gold one!

  • Jephri

Digging the orange one. I think these puppies would sell like hotcakes if they released them here. Women frequently request smaller phones with different color options in our store.

    • Meh

I'm not a woman, but I'm also waiting for the Z2 Compact.

So basically... It is the same as the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact but with a new set of colors (!?) and because it packs Snapdragon 800 we are not gonna get all the cool camera features from the Z2, such as 4K recording or Timeshift Video.

I think that Sony would really shoot themselves in a foot if they indeed released this as Sony Xperia Z2 Compact. I highly doubt it though.

In my opinion it will pack Snapdragon 801, 3GB RAM, 1080p <4.5 inch display and front facing speakers.

    • WhoaManWtF

The 800 is capable of everything the 801, believing any different is actually pretty comical.

      • Grayson

True, but still, why would the Z2 Compact have the exact same specs as the Z1 Compact? I don't buy it.

        • Nachiketa Ramesh

If the back is plastic instead of glass with an aluminum frame, it might actually be cheaper than the Z1f, and more compelling than the 5c

        • Ryan Stratton

It's the 2014 edition of the Z1 Compact.

      • Nachiketa Ramesh

The 801 is a modified 800 so thats obvious.

    • Roger Siegenthaler

Well the z2 has a screen that is galaxies better than the z1 (compact) so if this has that screen... that would already be enough of an upgrade tbh.

Z1 Compact has an IPS screen same as Z2 without ASF.
Z1 has indeed got a poorer quality screen as its not IPS .

      • Da Fuq

But still not as good as Galaxy ;)
If the Z2 had the screen from the S5 (and the Compact the same screen in 720p), this would be the perfect phone for me.

Or Sony could be pulling an Apple and think their customers are dumb enough to pay more for the exact same thing.

      • someone755

        Exact same thing inside plastic*

    • Lee Smith

The 4k video recording and time shift video is s firm ware update. The processor doesn't need to be ramped up and higher to get that feature out of it

  • ProductFRED

Worth noting the difference between the A2 and Z2 is the back is now matte plastic instead of glass.

    • Nachiketa Ramesh

Is it plastic?? It looks like metal. I know the frame is metal, but what about the back??

      • ProductFRED

The back is matte plastic. I read it on another site. They wouldn't use metal because that would cause horrible signal interference.

        • Nachiketa Ramesh

What about the frame around it? is that metal like on the Xperia SP and all the Z variants from the Z1??

          • ProductFRED

That I think is still metal.

  • BoFiS

Please bring this phone to Verizon in the US and I will finally give up my Droid 4 I've been clutching while I wait for ANY decent small phones to exist!

    • someone755

You. Call Vershitzon. Tell them you don't want them anymore. Then go to any other carrier and tell them you want to make a contract.

  • Vinícius Philot

This is the "mini" I've been dreaming of! Hopefully this will be Z2 compact.

  • taz89

What's different about this over the z1 compact

    • Woe, Is [S]unjay

Looks different and has a different name.

      • Nachiketa Ramesh

Also looks like they ditched the glass sandwich design which is real sad

        • Woe, Is [S]unjay

Yes, it looks like aluminum. I like both so I need to hold them both before I judge the build quality though the glass "looked" better.

          • Nachiketa Ramesh

If it is plastic, it could be cheaper than the z1f which actually has glass on the back. Otherwise it's as pointless as the zl2.

Actually, the design is reminiscent of the zl2 which is identical to the z2 in terms of specs. What are they trying to pull?

          • Woe, Is [S]unjay

Yes, the ZL2 is somewhat unneeded. It's only good for those people who want plastic or don't like the Z's design and those people are the minority. I actually preferred the ZL over the original Z but I prefer the Z2 over the ZL2.

          • Nachiketa Ramesh

Even for those people, a smaller battery and a thicker phone is a real compromise if the price doesn't make sense.

Its the same case for the Z1f and the A2. That's my point.

    • Ryan Stratton

It's the 2014 edition of the compact

  • Colleen Osbaldo

Waoow....I am currently using Sony Xperia Z and found it remarkable. Just planning to go for Xperia A2 :)

  • Ryan Stratton

I'm in Japan... Went to have a look... Its the 2014 edition of the Z1 compact with kit kat 4.4. Not a z2 compact. I've got the book for it if ur interested

  • Ryan Stratton

    2014 edition of z1 compact

  • Ryan Stratton

And yes they brought some new colours out for the new year... Whats so bad. About that??
