HTC took the wraps off the previously leaked One Mini 2 today (stylized as One mini 2), revealing a device that is slightly smaller than its older sibling and substantially more out of shape. With only a Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM, it won't move around pixels nearly as quickly as the device it takes inspiration from. At least with its 4.5-inch 720p display, it won't need to crank out as many, though it's still a stretch to think of a phone this size as small.

Yet like anyone with an inferiority complex, the One Mini 2 compensates however it can. In this case, it's the camera. The phone comes with a single 13MP rear-facing camera, a shooter with over three times the megapixels of the M8. Sure, those aren't "ultrapixels," but at least the resulting photos will fit comfortably on a high-resolution display.

The lack of a second camera means the One Mini 2 doesn't come with the 3D effects the M8 introduced, but it does retain the 5MP front-facing camera. It also keeps the dual frontal speakers that place HTC phones in a league of their own.

The phone will come in gray, silver, and gold when it starts rolling out in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East next month.

HTC One Mini 2

5MP front-facing camera, HTC BoomSound™ and HTC Sense™ 6 offer a best-in-class experience, wrapped in an iconic design

London, UK/Taipei, Taiwan, May 15, 2014– HTC, a global leader in innovation and design, today unveiled the HTC One mini 2, the latest addition to its renowned HTC One family. Featuring a compact, yet generous 4.5” HD display, HTC Sense™ 6 with HTC BlinkFeed™ and an impressive 5MP front-facing camera, the HTC One mini 2 brings the iconic metal craftsmanship and best-in-class experience of the HTC One (M8) to those in search of a more compact model.

“The latest member of the award-winning HTC One family distills the advanced features that have earned it global acclaim, into an elegant, compact handset”, said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “Its size and tapered edges fit perfectly in a hand, pocket or purse, making it look great and feel even better to use. It’s the perfect choice for those who love the iconic design of the HTC One (M8) yet want something more compact.”

Beauty runs in the family
Sporting the same breakthrough design that led HTC to receive an iF gold product design award in 2014 for the HTC One (M7), the sleek HTC One mini 2 features the smoothly curved back and brushed Gunmetal Gray finish of the HTC One (M8). Also available in Glacial Silver and Amber Gold, its compact size and stylish design make it an obvious choice for those who want a phone that both looks and feels incredible.

High quality camera for naturally stunning selfies
With a 5MP front-facing camera, high-quality selfies are guaranteed. Re-takes won’t be required, as the front camera’s self-timer gives you ample time to prepare your pose before the image is captured.

To give those self-portraits an element of professionalism, the HTC One mini 2 also features Touch Up for subtle beauty enhancements to smoothen the skin, eliminate red eye and adjust the contours of the face, while still looking natural. If you’re feeling playful, you can also give your selfies a manga-like effect using Touch Up’s eye-enhancement feature.

HTC BoomSound™ – A small device that makes a big sound
It may be compact, but the HTC One mini 2 packs HTC BoomSound technology to deliver powerful, crisp and clear audio that has never been more brilliant. Equipped with the same amplifier as the HTC One (M8), the One mini 2 delivers rich tones from bass through to treble, producing high-quality, immersive sound through the dual-frontal speakers that have become synonymous with the award-winning HTC One family.

HTC BlinkFeed™ – The news that matters, live on your home screen
Turning your home screen into a live stream of the latest news and social updates, HTC BlinkFeed™ makes the content that matters to you more accessible and easier to read than ever before. Why in hell didn't they put this 13mp camera on the M8 ???

    • dave

    • Mark Washington

I totally agree with you but the 13mp camera doesn't have to a good one .... Could be a low end 13mp and spec wise people might think it shoots better or out perform I should say but it doesn't .

      • Adam B.

Right but in any case their 4MP camera is subpar

  • gettysburg11s

So let me get this straight. The flagship M8 has a crappy 4 megapixel camera, but the mini version has a good, 13 MP camera? In what world does this make sense?

    • Kirk Amvrosidis

Sense? Oh Sense! Got it ;)

      • Steven Code

        *Up high*

    • worldclassflame

What you did there I see

    • gk1984

Who says it's a "good 13 MP camera?" megapixels only = resolution, nothing about quality. You could make a 100 MP camera and still have crap dynamic range, poor lens, etc. Let's do some real comparisons before we jump to conclusions.

    • dontsh00tmesanta

I'd rather have low light capability but that's just me

  • GreatNews

And this size is just a copy of the HTC One M7

    • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

      M7 was 4.7"

      • Cael

The screen is 0.2 inches smaller and has a lower resolution, but the phones are pretty much the same size.

    • Mystery Man

So this thing cost $250 right?

  • jpelgrom

It's also extremely expensive - it's around €470 here in the Netherlands, and for that price you could also get a Nexus 5, Samsung's Galaxy Note 3/S4, Sony's Xperia Z1, the original One, ...
    Basically, it's a very bad price-quality ratio.

    • aeri

      for €470, it's not just expensive, it's a Rip-off.

  • Chris Jutting

4.5" is far from mini. Not long ago 4.3" was mini with the RAZR M.

    • Chris

A few years ago 4.3" was huge with the HTC Evo lmao

      • Chris Jutting

My first Android phone was the HTC Aria. A whopping 3.2" lol.
Do they even sell phones with less than a 4.3" screen anymore?

    • http://turbofool.com Jarrett Lennon Kaufman

Seriously, and with the additional height of the HTC logo area, which made the M8 taller than it needed to be (well, gave the impression that it was doing so; I imagine the space was used internally), this is not remotely "mini." My girlfriend would still presumably hate this.

  • solbin

    Mini One with mini specs.

  • Covarez

They didn't forget to include that black bar too..

  • Mark Washington

Waiting for the one Max for sprint now .... Although I do have sense 6 already so does that mean they killed the Max series I hope not .... Improve on it please ... No fingerprint scanner and 13 mp camera lol. And make it 6inches not 5.9 and get rid of or make the black bar with HTC logo thinner or functional! Who hears me anyways just ranting

  • thartist

Why don't they use the Snapdragon 600 in these mini versions? It could be seen as sorta last gen, but still... And for that price...

  • http://www.scienceprousa.com/ dcarr622

    1GB of RAM. That's funny.

    • Mike Reid

      LOL. :)

Will upgrade to 5.0 or not... ?

  • Fred

If I want to buy two of these, do I have to say "can I have two one mini two please?"

  • Kelvin Chau

Anyone feel the same? Disappointed to HTC!

I have been a fan of HTC device for 3 phones including HTC One X.
Once I have thought of buying the new htc one m8, It's quite cool.
But the Camera are sucks, with that ultra pixel camera,
But the phone size are sucks, with the bizarre black bar below the screen

I need a phone just around inch screen size, with great battery and some great spec
Oh, finally wait the htc one mini 2 was released. Right, It just seems to fulfill my criteria.

    OHHHHH!!!! WAIT!!!!!!

The spec on the htc one mini 2 had the 2013 spec and will be sold at high price. The bizarre bar still exists, 1 gb ram, snapdragon s400 ??!!!!!
AND A 1300 megapixel on the mini but not the original m8?!

    What a ridiculous phone engineering.

I love Sense, but htc isn't making sense. If the coming iphone 6 are a little bigger than iphone 5 with more battery, I think I gonna leave HTC though I really love the convenience of HTC sense.....
