As predicted back in March based on an APK teardown, Google Now has received bill reminder integration via your Gmail account. The level of detail for some billers seems fairly basic at the moment: Google Now identifies emails in your Gmail account as bills, and a card will show up with the name of the biller, the amount due, the due date, and an option to view the email the bill was sent with.

The "Pay now" image we mocked up doesn't look exactly like what our tipster sent, but that's probably because this bill isn't for a billing provider Google Now has achieved rich integration with. What you're seeing is probably the most basic incarnation of the feature, whereas other billers may have or receive in the future more detailed information and options for action (such as paying your bill).

We know that strings for things like minimum payments, previous balances, last month's bill, and "see more bills" exist in the Now APK, but Google may not be leveraging all those tools just yet. Then again, maybe we just need to see more bills: do you have the billing feature? Have any good screenshots of it to share? Tip us at tips @ androidpolice dot com or share in the comments section below!

    Nice!
Will this work outside the US? Mexico for example?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

Good question, I don't actually know. Google tends to roll these things out to the US first, though.

      • Impheatus

        Yeah, I know.
I'll keep an eye on this feature.
        Thanks!

  • remister

I saw it earlier, but I refresh the Google now page... now it hasn't popped back up to ask me :(

Already I know this won't work with Capital One, as its emails only say when the next statement is ready; amounts are not given.

    • Justin W

Drives me nuts. I get balance alerts from them with no balance info. Thanks, Capital One.

      • anon

you need to look again at alert options
I get balance info/ payment amount/day in my emails

        • Dante

          Mint app,
It's a perfect application for bill reminder

    • Bob Bigellow

Unless Capital One integrates with Google's API.

Ugh. All these cool features, but I don't use my Gmail for these types of emails. Sucks. Oh well.

    • Matthew Fry

Give yourself to Google fully and wholeheartedly. How can you expect Google to do things for you when it knows you are holding back part of yourself?

      • http://www.twitter.com/b_boogey_xl b_boogey_xl

That made me lol in real life.

        • Mayoo

Explain to me how you would be able to lol outside of real life.

          • http://www.twitter.com/b_boogey_xl b_boogey_xl

I'd just type it and not really do it. Kind of like this… lol.

          • Bob Bigellow

            lol

      • Zachary Stein

I tell people stuff like that all the time!

I have GMail pulling in my regular eMail via POP3 and filing it into a special folder that gets purged immediately while leaving the original on the server. The result is GMail gets all my mail, but transparently, and I continue to use Outlook at home and Aquamail on the go as usual. This lets is be processed for Now usage without me having to use GMail for everything. Works quite well.

      • http://www.twitter.com/b_boogey_xl b_boogey_xl

You know, that sounds like a great idea! I will try and implement something just like this. Thank you kind sir!!

      • Crafty

How does it get purged immediately? Do you purge it manually or is there a setting that does it automatically in Gmail?

I've been thinking about doing something similar. Please let me know.

        • fzammetti

My apologies... I set this up a while ago and my memory was a bit flaky so I misspoke... it DOES NOT in fact auto-purge

Here's how I set it up... I first created a label specifically for mail pulled down from my regular account... then I added a POP3 account in GMail for it to check... I set it to label incoming messages with that label and also to archive incoming messages so that they skip the inbox (and the aforementioned setting to leave them on the server)... that's basically it.

So no, I in fact have to go in every so often and purge (which you remind me of- thanks!)... still, this arrangement works well... I have a little over 3,000 eMails sitting under that label right now and it's using a whopping 1% of my available space, so I could go literally YEARS before I HAD to purge :) ... remember too that GMail will filter spam out of that as well, so you're (generally) only getting messages you care about there.

It's worth noting though that this solution isn't perfect: it looks like Google will only check the POP3 account every 30 minutes or so, which means it can easily miss messages if you pull them down somewhere else (and don't leave messages on the server there). Still, it's better than nothing :)

          • Andy Stetson

An option you could use, instead of POP3, is to auto-foward everything from your regular account to your GMail account. Auto-forwards don't attach FW: to the beginning of emails, and with most providers, it doesn't show in your sent items. This allows GMail to receive the email immediately, while leaving it on your primary mail.

I have it set up like this so that my university email goes straight to my GMail, to it's own label, with its own alert. Same concept, different use case.

          • fzammetti

Hmm... I actually like the idea a lot, but how do you get the messages to go to its own label? I admit I haven't used GMail all that much, but I can't seem to figure it out... how do you identify that it's a forwarded message?

          • theunknown

            if to:original_mail_address
then apply label & skip inbox

            that's it

          • Guest

Hmm, maybe I'm just being dense today but I can't seem to do that... I get to the Filters tab, and I can create a filter, but it appears to only be a search filter... I don't see any mechanism to say apply label... see attached image. Am I in the wrong place maybe?

          • fzammetti

Like theunknown mentioned, can also be done through GMail settings, then the filter tab.

    • xpl0iter

Make a forwarder for these kind of mails to your gmail id and problem solved! :P

      • http://www.twitter.com/b_boogey_xl b_boogey_xl

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar, what's a forwarder? Also, you think it's possible to only forward email from a specific folder in my other mail account?

        • xpl0iter

Yeah you can. If there are filters, first create a label/folder based on a filter. Filters are basically rules using which you can set rules like all the mails from xx should go to the folder "foo". You can set this filter to forward it to another email ID as well. Its done in gmail like this: http://prntscr.com/3jstph I am pretty sure most of the other email services too have this same feature.

Google now updated early this week and started reminding me of my upcoming bills.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Do you have some screenshots you can share?

      • Ed Wilson

Sorry I don't. But looking back at the recently updated apps in Play shows that the Google Now Launcher updated on the 12th. I'm almost positive that's when it showed up for me.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I've heard that before, but I'm not buying the association. That just doesn't make sense. Plus, what about people not using GNL?

          • Ed Wilson

I agree it could have just been a coincidence. That is when my first bill came up after the first. For the record, my Google Search version is 3.4.16.1149292.arm.

          • Greg Lamb

i have the same version number. No option for bills in 'everything else' section and no bill reminders coming up. Guess we won't get it in Australia???

  • lusky3

Yeah this is pretty useless. I'm with CIBC, RBC, Chase and MBNA. None of them tell you the balance, only that they are due. And only Chase says "payment is due in 7 days". The rest don't.

    • massysett

Amex is great; they let you configure how much info you want in the reminder emails: date due, amount due, total balance if you want. Or you can say you don't want the reminder emails. No reason for the bank not to make this configurable. Another reason I use my Amex.

  • pete

    US only?

    • Canuck

I got asked if I wanted them in Canada

  • Jacob Dagenais

All my bills are either in a pdf or just a link to their web portal... the latter being much more common...

  • Mayoo

I already know this won't work with any of my supplier because they respect my identity and don't send this kind of information that could be usefull to hackers. They just say "You received a new bill, go onto the website, login and view them". And I prefer it that way.

Many companies don't bill via email.

  • James Laird

Anyone know if this works in the UK at all? Thanks in advance from Lifehacker UK!

  • slfisher

I already get this functionality with EasilyDo.

  • markgbe

Is anyone else not seeing these reminders yet? I definitely have bills in my gmail that should be able to be picked up..
