It's Wednesday, and you know what that means – yes, Google is updating apps. This week we've got a search update to version 3.4 and it has some good stuff going on. We're still checking it out, but it looks like automatic parking detection is a go. Or stop... whatever.

What's New

  • New parking card in Google Now
  • New reminders interface with better arrangement of past reminders
  • Centralized list for nicknames under Accounts & privacy
  • 'Help' and 'Send feedback' are now 'Help & feedback' (one item)
  • Offline mode no longer clears all cards, keeps cards from last update
  • Open some settings by voice
  • More detailed Watch now card with episode numbers and other data

Download

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

WTH? My IFTTT recipe didn't work :(

    • RyanWhitwam

Usually takes a few minutes, doesn't it?

      • Matthew DiGiacomo

I went into the app to make it check manually and it didn't pick it up either.

      • Nicholas McDonald

Mine's seem to be working, just got a notification.

        • Matthew DiGiacomo

Da fack, what device are you on?

          • Nicholas McDonald

            HTC One (M8)

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Give it a few minutes, it probably needs to detect the new article first.

      • Matthew DiGiacomo

I made it manually check and it still didn't work..

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

          Mine just triggered.

    • erz2192

It worked for me. Got the alert about 1 minute after the post.

      • Andrew

        Worked for me as well!

    • Adam B.

Plus it is not entirely useful, since it doesn't provide any clickable link

    • Caleb Cross

I checked manually and it worked. I just happened to go to android police as soon as the article was posted it seems.

    • Owen Finn

      My Tasker recipe worked?

IFTTT has about a 15 minute delay - it's not instantaneous for external events like this...

    • http://google.com/+DavidJohnson David J

Correct. IFTTT has confirmed this. Recipe worked here.

    • MdR guy

Twitter worked best for me. I got the IFTTT notice considerably later.

    Thank you IFTTT

    • Ordnas_selac

yeah but is it me that doesn't open the link??

      • Derek Traini

If you use Pushbullet you can have the link sent to you.

        • Ordnas_selac

I do! I guess then I will have to modify the IFTTT recipe.

          • Derek Traini

Maybe it isn't set to "Push a link"?

          • LUL.

how do I set it to "push a link"?

        • JPB

....which is a much better recipe anyway.

      • http://tonybullard.com/ Tony Bullard

Yeah, it looks like the IFTTT recipe listed under popular recipes on;y include the title of the post. Which is pretty useless. Of course, it's easy enough to edit and add the URL.

how do you add the URL?

  • Tony Pettinato

    RSS > IFTTT

    • mobilemann

RSS and ifttt work really well together. Everything is not a fight.

      • Tony Pettinato

It isn't a fight, but everyone is bragging about IFTTT notifying them about these articles, as if it is the only automated way to find a new article...

        • mobilemann

the overlap in what they do is actually pretty small. Feel free to not use it. I like using google now (with off screen activation) to control the lights in my home, my media center etc, but that's just me. I'm into extending the abilities of my phone.

  • usaff22

They removed the option to select whether to use the hotword only in search results. Now it's all, or nothing :(

Also, the nicknames option isn't showing up in the UK. Double :(

    • Simon Belmont

Maybe it's preparation for OK Google everywhere? Probably not, but just a thought.

I haven't received the update yet, so I can't check. Sorry.

    • Chapa

I can't find the nicknames option in mine either. And is completely set to US English... maybe is location based? (I'm in Argentina)

      • Arjen82

Yep, only seems to work if you have a US account

        • Chapa

Weird limitation, if you ask me. Given that every other feature works flawlessly.

          • lycan codex

You need to enable contact recognition under accounts and privacy in Google search!

          • Rama Raju Vegesna

it is already enable in my mobile but nick name not apperaring I am from India

          • Suthee T.

Can't find the nickname in Google Now either, but I insert nicknames in the contact app. It works!

          • Stanton Dowd

            Makes no difference.

          • Chapa

Bump. Actually I had to change my region to US English (by using my US Credit Card and a US bound Address)... that's what it took. Before doing that (and even after enabling the Contact Recognition feature) Google would ask who my wife was... EVERY SINGLE time, even after I set the proper nickname in Contacts which was suggested as well.

    • Craig Gosling

Can't see it in Canada either... Only Americans have nicknames I guess

  • Milind Shah

    IFTTT FTW!

  • runderekrun

Hey cool it fixed the voice delay with Tasker.

    • apfelcake

What are you using with Google now and tasked?:)

      • runderekrun

Well when I connect to my home wifi Tasker asks "Would you like to turn your computer on?" The last Google Search update made it so it was pretty much impossible for me to say "yes" due to a weird 6 second delay before the voice command would be recognized. Well actually, now that I think about it, Tasker updated today too so really either one could have fixed it :P

  • Chaosprower

What I'd want is the "Ok, Google" hotword working in more locations and languages.

  • https://plus.google.com/u/0/108482452903817442299/posts Andrew Bone

How did you get to the nicknames bit? It's not there for me.

    • usaff22

Seems that it's US only :(

      • https://plus.google.com/u/0/108482452903817442299/posts Andrew Bone

        Well that's a real shame

      • http://andreavenditti.com Andrea Venditti

Oh really, what a surprise. That's so unusual for Google products. [almost ironic]

        • peatcoal

How is that in any way ironic or "almost ironic"?

    • rob damiani

just say "call my wife" for example. Google Now will walk you through the setup. Very easy.

  • erz2192

Still have not added proper timer functionality :(

  • Seth Merritt

Were tv and VOD providers always an option?

    • Chaosprower

Yes, even if it's useless in your territory.

  • Joel Anderson

The nicknames menu causes my HTC M8 GPe to freeze. Odd.

    • JoeDirt2217

      Same thing on S4

      • John Seidner

same thing on my Nexus 5 stock rooted.

  • Derek Traini

This looks new as well. Maybe other options such as "Ok Google Everywhere" could show up here in the future?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      That's not new.

      • Derek Traini

        Ah ok, thanks!

    • Garrett

Leaving "Block offensive words" checked adds a slight slowdown in voice recognition. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

  • http://jordanhotmann.com/ Jordan Hotmann

Video on demand providers can now be selected in the customize area.

    • Roger

That was there. I've used it for a while but never noticed it mentioned in previous updates. It's somewhat useful.

      • http://jordanhotmann.com/ Jordan Hotmann

Nice, I hadn't explored deep enough before.

  • Adam Truelove

The parking locator better get you pretty close or it's useless. Telling me what block I parked on doesn't do me much good.

    • MdR guy

Some people are so clueless that they don't even know if they parked to the north or to the south of something...

I can't think of a time I have ever lost my car, but when I am with friends/family, and I am not the one navigating back, I cannot believe how lost they can be sometimes.

      • Dennis Ulijn

There are many times when I've remembered in what field i parked, but not what exact spot...

    • JPB

It's going to be as good as your device's GPS and wifi location capabilities.

  • Eric

Nickname setting in the search app?
    It's getting confusing and messy.

    • Bob G

No, it is not. Nicknames for easy voice command calling and texting is fantastic, especially for hands-free!

      • Eric

Yes, I know what it does. It just seems wrong placing there.

      • pfmiller

The point is there is already a place for nicknames in contacts. Does this store the nickname in your contacts when you create it here?

        • Simon Belmont

That's different. I believe that one in the contacts sets the nickname that people can see for you in Google+.

The nicknames in Google Now are not related that. Hope this helps.

          • pfmiller

No, there's a nickname field that can be created for every contact, and if you set a nickname you can refer to the person by that name in Google Now. It works perfectly and has for a long time.

          • Simon Belmont

Yes. I realize that (For example I've had "Mom" in that field for a long time with my mother's real name as the contact), but it's not the SAME "nickname" that you're setting IN Google Now as shown in the article above.

Like I said above, there's a difference. Those two nicknames are not linked (which was an answer to your original question above).

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

So half-assed. Not only that, but it doesn't sync them to the cloud at all. So your nicks are strictly per-device.

          • Simon Belmont

Now that is stupid. No cloud syncing of the nicknames?

I knew it wasn't the same as the ones in the contacts, but you'd think they'd store it somewhere. Fail.

      • Simon Belmont

It's nice. I do like being able to say "send a text to my wife" for texting.

Sadly, it's not completely hands free until they let us access Google Now / Search when the screen is off either via Bluetooth headsets or touchless controls (or both), and when they start letting hear texts sent to us be read aloud. That and reading aloud messages we've dictated before sending them (to check for errors), all hands free. But, I have a feeling we'll see this with that OK Google everywhere thing. Can't wait.

    US Only?

  • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Just a heads up, if you're using XGELS Xposed module with GNL, this update breaks it.

    • rslh

      How so?

      • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

The settings don't apply anymore. Likely have to wait until the module is updated.

Comment from the developer in the donators G+ group: "They are there. And we are pretty much done. Seems like Google obfuscated the apk. Thats it...."

Doesn't look good for the future of XGELS...

          • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Ugh...makes no sense Google putting out a great launcher, with no options or customization. Ridiculous. Guess it's back to Nova.

Great. Now I'm going to see fifteen comments about someone that was brought here by IFTTT in every APK download article.

Great feature. We know, we know.

    • http://jordanhotmann.com/ Jordan Hotmann

Too bad there's not a recipe to downvote every comment that mentions IFTTT in the AP comments section...

      • Simon Belmont

        Haha. Including yours.

But, I'm nice. I upvoted yours.

    • DirkBelig

You need an IFTTT recipe to automate your whining about people posting that they were alerted by IFTTT to the APK download.

      • Simon Belmont

He has one post, dude. I wouldn't call that something that needs to be automated.

I also wouldn't call it whining as he even said it was a great feature. Plus, you're whining about his "whining."

        • http://franklinc.ca/ Franklin

in other words whine for everyone?

          • Drago

Whine, lose, or draw. How about some cheese with that whine.

Whiners and losers. Whine, whine, whine, whine, whine, whine, whine.

  • Taco Monster

Did installing the APK destroy all settings in Now Launcher for anyone else?

    • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

According to the dev of XGELS:

I like the parking location, but it is giving me a pretty large circle area. Hopefully it will get smaller. I like Google

  • MdR guy

I am not running the Xposed module, but this update killed all my settings in the Google Search app. I can open settings, but when I press on anything, nothing happens.

    Note 2, rooted 4.3

  • Benjamin S.

So the nickname option seems to be US only, when you say "ok google, call mom" it still asks you to tell it who "mom" is but it does not save what you select then. Sad :(

  • LocBox

how do you even find and setup the parking card?

    • Andrew

I think it's supposed to be automatic via activity detection. (i.e. it looks for activity that seems like riding in a car, and waits for that to turn to activity that looks like walking).

      • s_bomb

So as someone who doesn't own a car, am I going to have parking cards popping up every time I get out of a taxi/bus/etc? Hopefully there is an off switch when the cards start popping up, haven't been in a car today so I haven't had a chance to see how this works yet.

  • garyo

I just got this version, but my what's new says something totally different:
    - traffic incidents on your route
    - support for cricket (what's that?)
    - set reminders for chains
    - "Ok Google" hotword for German and French

    why's mine different?

Nope, but it broke everything in XGELS and Google obfuscated the apk so the dev can't fix it.

  • jamesfuston

The nickname functionality doesn't appear to work if you've set a phonetic name for the contact, and there seems to be a very small set. Roommate/room mate doesn't trigger the nickname functionality.

    • jamesfuston

This is hit or miss. Some contacts with phonetic names work, others don't. Still a great feature.

  • Tapewormlatvia

"Ok Google" hotword detection has changed again. It is now either On or Off for both the app and the homescreens of GNL. You cannot change the listening settings separately, like you could in the previous version.

  • http://www.gundamaustralia.com/ cameron charles

so with this update killing xgels, does anyone have a bead on a launcher app that replicates the GEL now screen?

    • Franco Rossel

No such thing. GNL is closed source for a reason.

    • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

KK Launcher does it, for the most part. You still lose the "OK Google" hotword though.

      • http://www.gundamaustralia.com/ cameron charles

will check it out thanks i knew id lose the hotword i just come to like the dedicated now screen really

        • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

          It does include that.

  • Steven

Is it just me or did we lose the ability to import icons and folders from old home screens?

  • Crispin Swickard

Hmm. haven't seen it do it yet. maybe its partially server side?

  • Steven

Seeing the following stuff in the APK...

    - References to "package state" (Waiting, Downloading, Installing, Unknown, Not Restored)

    - Ability to set and view timers. I don't see the ability to do it yet, but it's in there

    - It actually says "Sending Text" instead of "Sending Message" when using voice commands to send texts! Plus several other areas where it separates the word "message" into "text" and "email"

    - Perhaps an always listening feature? "Listen while charging" and "Listen if the device is unlocked"

  • miri

Just got the 'Watch Now' card and it's looking pretty snazzy: a transparent banner black overlaying cover art rather than the usual blue.

  • Sibee

This isn't working on my S3. Do you need to be a certain version. I'm still on 4.1.2. It goes through the motions of asking for me to pick a contact but doesn't save it. Also there is no nickname option in the Accounts and Settings. Anyone?

    • Sibee

Ignore me... It's obviously US only

  • allen

Google Now also provides a list of stores when you are at a mall. You can also search for a store.

  • dcdttu

Can Now finally let me assign addresses other than 'work' and 'home?'

I'd LOVE information about my drive to my friends' houses, but unless you literally search for a location, you can't get it to show up, which is silly.

I search for hundreds of things I will never need drive-times to, yet drive to my best friend's house all the time and, for the life of me, can't get Now to tell me about that.

  • tokuiten

Dammit... I want to keep "Ok Google", but I don't want to use GNL without XGELS, because GNL is shit without XGELS.

Anyone got a way to keep GNL on and listening in the background even when a different launcher is active?

The nicknames feature is not working for me. Before anyone yells at me, yes, I'm in the US and using English. If I say "X is my Y", it will only do a search. If I say "call my Y" and try to go through the setup, it will always say, "the person was not recognized". If I try to manually pick the contact, it will never stick. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, as well as clearing cache and data, but still nothing. Any ideas? The only thing I can find when searching is another AS article that mentions "the person was not recognized" as a string in version 3.3.
