Some trends are awesome, and some are not so much. This one counts as the former. Android manufacturers have increasingly turned to the Play Store for distributing updates to their core Android apps. Sony's been doing this for a while now, and the Xperia Keyboard is its latest upload.

Keyboard1 Keyboard2

When Google uploads an app to the Play Store, such as the new camera app released yesterday, it tends to open the software up to more devices (though not always). With other manufacturers, including Sony, this isn't usually the case (but again, not always). Regardless, this allows for a speedier and more transparent means of distributing updates to users. Heck, it sure beats waiting for a firmware upgrade.

Xperia mini pro user here. guess what...

        • Ambroos

Xperia Mini Pro is a device from 2011... You can hardly expect the new keyboard to work on that device.

          • http://platypus.blox.pl/ najodleglejszy

well, Fleksy and Minuum aren't old either and they're working just fine so actually yes, I can expect so ;)

And all HTC's and Motorola's apps are incompatible with my Xperia Z1.
      See what they did there?

      • ash

They are basically for their own phone just for faster updates. Like motorola apps (mostly) will not work with other phones.
Same way sony keyboard will work on only sony phones. They will initially don't be available for some phones but will open up soon.

      • abcd

It's incompatible with my two Sony phones as well: Xperia S and Xperia Arc S.

    • Altos

I have a Sony phone and it's also incompatible with that.
I guess it's only available for their flagships or for KitKat (which is only on their flagships, so it's the same).

  • Danny365

I wish LG would start doing this also.

    • Martin

Yeah, they need it the most, because of their heavy UI.. And they are once again behind..

Now this is a new trend that I like!

  • Jalok Xlem

Aw man, I would gladly spend 4 dollars for an Xperia Keyboard to be used on my Galaxy Nexus. Oh humph!

    • caleb hatere

Which android version are you running on your nexus? I can give you an apk if you want :D

  • ithehappy

Could someone tell me is there any app with which I'll be able to download this app to my PC and then send it to my phone, I mean the apk?

  • Ambroos

For everyone who can't install this: it's for Xperia's running KitKat only, since it's the very latest version.

  • http://nurudin.jauhari.net/ Jauhari

    Thanks you Sony :(

    • ithehappy

Well you can bypass that with Play Store fix module under Xposed framework, but then again there'll be a new error, i.e.,

      • saf1927

Why would you try installing it on a non-Sony device anyway?

        • dude

          WhyTF not?

        • ithehappy

          You high?

    • Daniel Traynor

You ought to clear some of your notifications.

  • Opinion

for incompatibility i guess it for 4.4 and up,look there are emoticon,i currently using 4.3 on my xperia zl and cannot download it but i still praise sony move to include it in playstore as future sony user will able to get the updates easily rather than require firmware update,i love the swipe option that can actually learn from your writing style

  • HaN5aR

    • http://FB.com/HaN5aRr HaN5aR

      • dfgdfg

only works on sony 4.4 devices. does this profile match any of your devices?

  • Muhammad Zohaib Rizwani

You should list it in the article that it is only compatible with Sony devices running 4.4.2

  • ithehappy

Okay, that's enough for me. Have done enough to get the APK, but couldn't. APK Leecher and all, everything failed.
    We Need the APK.

  • Paul Faraday

How about they get the latest Xperia in to the shops.

  • [S]unjay Burn[s] Red

The Xperia keyboard is the best out there, I wish that it was available on non-Xperia devices.

  • [S]unjay Burn[s] Red

My mom's phone is the same. I feel sorry for the poor phone, she can easily burn through 2GB of ram.

  • Rahim Ali

somebody has shared it on this page http://trashbox.ru/topics/56325/klaviatura-xperia-6.4.a.0.6

the apk download link is below the play store link

    i found it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51994042

    • Rahim Ali

The same apk as above (identical MD5 hash) also available here

  • http://www.emuparadise.me/roms-isos-games.php Apple is a patent troll

I rather use the AOSP keyboard as horrible as that is it is still better than this rubbish.

  • Hamdi Ferchichi
  • Brian Nazareth

ZL? How did you get the KitKat update?

    • RodrigoChang

It's a full systemUI port from Xperia Z2 for Xperia ZL If I have Kitkat the keyboard will be compatible because is only for Xperia With Kitkat like Z2, Z1(s) and Ultra.

  • garychencool

Not supported on my Xperia device? Gee thanks Sony.
