The third part in Google's update troika today is Play Newsstand. This app is getting some subtle changes to organization and not so subtle color tweaks. If you're anxious to get your hands on the latest version of Google's news reader, head down below to grab the APK.

Google has yet to post an updated changelog for this app, but here's what we're seeing so far.

  • My News and My Magazines now combined in new My Library section
  • New Read Now category bar is swipeable and auto-hides
  • Action bar changes color for each news category

The navigation menu is less cluttered now with the My Library section. From this new area you'll still be able to see all your subscriptions to news and magazines, as well as various general topics. The colorful action bars in the main categories of the app are a fun change, but will be a pain for anyone addicted to the Tinted Statusbar Xposed module.

Not to detract from the topic, but in the next few update Wednesdays, I have a strong feeling there will be a Google Search update (possibly with some of those rumoured features). Especially since now that Microsoft is also rivalling them.

Back on topic, I hope these vibrant colors extend to action bar soon!

    • Jiggy

Don't know about Google Now, but Hangout update would surely be in the next century.

      • Zak Taccardi

I'm guessing there will be a beautiful update for Google I/O

        • Jiggy

By that time WhatsApp would have completely eaten and digested Hangout's lunch. :-/

      • abobobilly

I share your frustration brother :( Its like i have been waiting a million years for hangouts update which could fix some of its MAJOR problems, including its frigging side bar)

  • Guest

The action bar + the categories in the same color look gorgeous !

  • Grahaman27

DAMNIT GOOGLE! ADD COLOR TO SYSTEM BARS!

    • Thomas Wong

I share your frustration. Never understand why Google establishes the guidelines, only to knock them down or ignore them completely. (like the omission of transparent system bars and the purported new Gmail app)

      • Taco Monster

I seriously doubt you know what the guidelines say.

        • Thomas Wong

Well, I know well enough of the parts where hamburger menu and the transparent bars are mentioned. These patterns are interestingly still absent from Google's latest apps or are slightly different from what they were intended to be. They are guidelines after all, not rules. It is just amusing to see how closely Google stays to their claimed vision of UX.

        • vyktorsouza

they RECOMMEND to use it when you need to show more content, they do not deny the use of it in other cases, translucency looks very nice and everyone agrees with it, Google is not Apple, they -used to- listen to what we want rather than what they stablish therefore, stop this non-sense against transparent bars

          • Taco Monster

What `non-sense' against transparent bars are you so upset about?

In fact, you're making precisely the point I'm making, which is that there is that they only recommend using translucence when it enhances your content presentation. Given that, it's a travesty that Maps doesn't have it yet. But that doesn't mean that Gmail should have it or that it even needs it.

  • Kevin RandomEMailSorry Jackson

Colorful stuff and a lot of whites, and translucency are way to go. Google started to get it. I can't be the only one who thinks that action and notification bar look hideous and dull with black background and grayish white icons.

But nice updates. It needs to start somewhere.

  • Neto Cavalcanti

I do not understand why Google does not use translucent bars in their apps. Obviously that would be fine with Newsstand navbar translucent and could use Imersive Mode feature as it is a reading app.

    • Brandon Jiang

they have been making nice changes to the action bars, but they have not been expanding on to the status bar....
geez, even HTC is doing better for translucency in their stock apps

    • DT

Translucent is definitely the key word there. I'm not a fan of the transparent buttons, it looks downright ugly against some lighter backgrounds. A translucent bar would look very nice however and would definitely suit stuff like this.

      • fried_egg_isPoop

        Not really.

        I love transparency/translucency wherever it's implemented.

      • abobobilly

Assuming you are talking about the "navigation on-screen buttons" ? Well, you must know that using a translucent nav button bar will serve a great purpose i.e. giving you "more area" to read or do tasks on, which would be just wonderful. (nav buttons auto hide, and can be shown with a swipe-up gesture from bottom)

There is this game in Play Store "Sporos", check it out. You will love playing it with translucent bars and nav buttons.

    • abobobilly

That is the most ironic thing ever since they have released this change in Kit Kat <_<

  • Daveon Jackson

    What is designer mode?

  • Frustrated

Anybody else have a bug that will not let a downloaded magazine load in text mode unless you're connected to wifi? I've been having this problem ever since they switched to the combined currents magazine app.

  • Danny

Anyone getting significantly decreased scrolling performance in this version? It's scrolling pretty smoothly, but the pictures don't load unless you've completely stopped the scroll action.

    • Denis

yes, the overall performance of the new version leaves a lot to be desired.

  • serzhanja

Great. More inconsistency in design. Google Keep with a refreshed look and the other two Google apps with same old design.

  • zorrow

I only have highlights in read now no other tabs.

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Wish Newsstand was also in Chrome. For now I am using feedly and absolutely love it because it has a simple Chrome extension for PC so I could always get the latest info while browsing and seeing updates through the widget on my android devices

  • Mislav

Still unable to easily set location reminder for work or home location. Keep doesn't pick up my address when I just enter work OR home as a location. That is my major complaint for app ever since it has been release.

    • Mislav

Accidentally wrote here instead for new keep update

I think I've just discovered something! Has someone seen the new mode introduced in Google Play Kiosco 3.2? If you pulse repeatably the version number it gives you admin rights within the app, and then appears a new option called "design mode" (modo de diseñador en español).

  • Diego Pretelin

Well well... I found this error on my Google Newsstand, spanish language! As you can see it says "Mi Música" ("My Music" in english)... ¿LoL? Dafuq with that? xD
