Google Keep isn't the only app getting an update today – a new version of Play Movies is rolling out as well. This one comes with some UI refinements, news seeking behavior, and a few new settings. You want it? We can help.

Google has yet to update the changelog, but here's what we're seeing so far.

  • Updated slide-out menu with multi-account selection
  • New seeking behavior
  • Closed caption system override setting
  • Closed caption indicator icon on video info page
  • Episode synopsis

If you're not switching accounts a lot, the new seeking behavior is probably the biggest improvement. You can still drag in the seek bar to get around in a video, but swiping above that on the video works now too. Doing this lets you scrub through the video in 10 second chunks with a swipe in either direction. You can also drag continuously for better precision (slower than using the main seek bar). It's really cool.

Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

Not to give any undue credence to the 'leak' but branding via action bar icons, while recommended for the developer's sake, is by no means necessary. Above all devs should do what suits their apps and if Gmail does end up using a full drawer indicator it could be to further encourage doing what best suits the app. That and in my opinion, the Gmail launcher icon in the action bar is HIDEOUS and using the de-emphasized drawer/up icons without a primary element like an icon or bold text looks very awkward and doesn't make for a very clear touch target.

I see what you're saying, but it's more about uniformity and a consistent user experience. Although there are separate divisions for different Google services, Google apps have certain look and feel that Google has decided to promote to allow users to recognize them as Google apps. Google would not encourage it's Gmail team to disregard it's developer guidelines for it's own sake because that would in turn encourage 3rd party developers to do the same, which means users would end up suffering from the lack of consistency. The reason I know this is true is because there is already a standard set with all Google Play apps- movies, music, games, etc. and that continues with non-Play apps like Google Keep and the current Gmail. Why would Google stop this trend? It doesn't make sense. By the way, if you dislike the look of the Gmail icon in the action bar that can easily be corrected while still achieving the same effect. Just look at Google Keep after it's most recent update.

Contrary to popular belief, consistency does not necessitate everything being identical. That rumored Gmail app is well within tolerance for having the look and feel of an Android app and Google themselves have featured much more divergent apps in the Play Store. I'd say that making Android more compatible with current design trends and encouraging developers to experiment a little more would be great for the platform. Really, the only ones suffering from this "inconsistency" are the self-proclaimed design enthusiasts that have no understanding of design language or it's purpose in the first place.

            I respectfully disagree.

They should update Search to compete with Windows Phone 8.1's Cortana.

I can see where the Play Movies swipe-to-seek comes from (hint: starts with MX)

It's been a long time since we last saw a Google Calendar update, hasn't it? Just wondering.

  • royboy

So it seems that they're getting rid of the overflow buttons and popping the extra items in the drawer.

I really don't like, when people call it a "slide-out menu" or variations of that. It's called a Navigation Drawer. A "slide-out menu" is a 3rd party library for devs that are too stupid to implement a native Navigation Drawer and often moves the content out of the way to make room for the menu, whereas a Navigation Drawer overlays the content. A slide-out menu often even moves the actionbar or overlays it, while a Navigation Drawer begins under the actionbar.

I like Google's trend with hamburger menus in their apps

The day that Play Movies & Play Books give me the option to choose to buy stuff in their original language is the day they'll have me as a new customer.
