Google is rolling out an update to Keep today, and it's a pretty big one. With the push to v2.2 Keep is gaining a few new features, but probably the first thing you'll notice is that wacky orangey-yellow action bar.

2 3 4

Here are all the changes we're seeing in the app, though the Google Play changelog hasn't been updated yet.

  • Searchable images: Find printed text in images
  • List settings: Set where new or checked items go
  • Trash: Keep deleted notes just a little longer
  • Yellow action bar
  • Updated slide-out menu with multi-account selection
  • Make copies of notes
  • Action bar changes color with notes

2014-04-02 18.38.30 2014-04-02 18.38.38 2014-04-02 18.38.25

Keep used to be that same understated gray color used throughout many of Google's apps, but now it's all snazzy. Some of Mountain View's apps are already like this, though. For example, Play Music is orange. The more substantive updates seem cool, in particular the image search – it could be great if you snap a picture of a sign or an ad, but it's not clear how well it'll work. The ability to make copies of notes is nice too, but long overdue.

The look of this update makes the gmail rumors from earlier today seem a lot more plausible. Same kind of style.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      • iamnotkurtcobain

I guess/hope you get the apk from a new gmail update soon.. Would make sense since gmail is 10 years old..

    • http://tommydaniel.com Tommy Thompson

      Thinking the same thing!

    • Shade

Maybe Google is changing the Design Guidelines for 4.5/5.0 and all these apps have the new ones?

      • morteum

Would be fine with that if it was more like this and less like the gmail image earlier. They are similar, but the differences make or break it in my opinion.

    • AgainAndABen

Was definitely about to say that!

    • Grahaman27

personally, I think the opposite, it looks nothing like the gmail leak.

      • Akshay Mehta

The coloured action bar doesn't remind you of anything ?

        • Ariya SD

Play Music already had a colored action bar. That doesn't really mean anything. The new Gmail leak looks like iOS. This doesn't.

    • Tony Pettinato

Not really. The only similarity is a colored top bar, which they have for a lot of apps (Books, Music, Movies, Play Store, etc.). Those Gmail screenshots look almost like iOS. I would hope Google wouldn't try to make their Android apps similar to another platform.

    • codemonkey85

Not sure I agree here... there's an app icon on the "hamburger" menu, there's no Roboto Condensed font here, and the menu icons aren't colored. The only similar change here is coloring the action bar.

EDIT: Actually, Roboto Condensed is used in the "what's new" box, and that blue is the same as the new Gmail blue I guess. But still, I don't see any other UI changes similar to the purported new Gmail.

    • mikeym0p

I just dont understand why they'd choose blue for Gmail. That immediately made me think it was fake until I saw Keep and Play Videos getting updates.

    • Matthew Fry

But let me point out that it's still not full hamburger.

    • Crispin Swickard

The gmail one still seems suspect since it even lacks the gmail icon. I like the move to a more simplified white icon. I hope the other apps follow suit. Keeps more harmony with the white icons in the notification area. The gmail one could be just an incomplete mockup though, and that would explain the missing icon. We all know to not hope for consistent design even from Google itself at this point. :/

    • Bojan Tomic

What? They look nothing alike... O.o

  • https://twitter.com/mattmjm1 Matthew Muysson

And when do we get folders?

  • Mayoo

Welcomed update. By why can't I classify my notes into folder? This is such a basic feature, I'm only waiting this to throw away Evernote.

    • TheSparks

Same here, really want this feature man!

    • mikeym0p

Its mean for shorthand notes, but I agree folders, or even tag searching would be imperative.

    • lbrfabio

It would be better labels like in gmail. Folders are too restrictive

  • telbany94

why the #%# no transparent status bar ??

    • Zargh

Because they never use the translucent status bar when there's an Action Bar.
In that 4.4 Android design in action episode they said to avoid doing that because it makes the Action bar look too tall.

      • Grahaman27

        thats BS.

        • Bluewall

What's the point of a translucent status bar here ?

          • Suhas Vemuri

Aesthetics.. Not needed.. Just a cherry on the pie..

      • RyanWhitwam

Yeah, but the matching category bar in the new Newsstand update makes the action bar look tall too. I think it's more about not looking like iOS.

    • Harsha

Please someone tell me one app where status bar is transparent (except for GNL)

  • Taco Monster

Action bar color changes with note!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Nice spot.

      • JonJJon

Wonder if this could mean that the notifications bar will be updated in the next android release to change colour to the same as action bar of an app.

      • abhisahara

Catch - The note only goes to bin if you delete it from device. If deleted from web then it gets deleted altogether and cant recover from the bin on device.

    • vyktorsouza

getting everything ready for the translucent statubar, I see you Google

      • Crispin Swickard

Yet its still not translucent.. Hop to it Google.

    • Tony Pettinato

I wish just the action bar would change color when you're picking a color for a note. Having the entire screen change color is a bit much.

  • Kieron Quinn

Wonder how long it will be until the menu items in the drawer becomes the recommendation

    • Aaron Jaeger

The drawer options are a lot easier to reach that that overflow button in the tippy-top-my-thumb-isn't-long-enough corner. You might be on to something.

    • Aaron Jaeger

The drawer options are a lot easier to reach that that overflow button in the tippy-top-my-thumb-isn't-long-enough corner. You might be on to something.

  • Guest

Looks great! I hope they changed they have changed the note colors, they used to be quite different from the web view.

  • blakjakdavy

I like the action bar...makes the app's "branding" a little better and more in line with the other Google apps. I want hangouts to have a green action bar!

    • Ambroos

Exactly. It's what Google has been pushing for all along. You should recolor Holo elements to fit your own brand, not use them as-is with the horrible blue.

      • http://eichefam.net/ Paul

        "awesome blue"

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/77537273@N03/ Herman

Call me crazy, but I hate how the supposed yellow isn't quite yellow. It's orange.
It would've been MUCH better had it been the same yellow as the yellow coloured notes.

    • Robert Ray

Yellow colors have the same R and G values, but this color is (249, 193, 23). It's close to "goldenrod1".

      • http://www.flickr.com/photos/77537273@N03/ Herman

Thank you, for teaching me a new colour!
Also, told y'all so it's not yellow it's orange :3

  • mikeym0p

How does scrolling feel? It seems like the current Keep's listview has a lot of layers making it laggy even on my N4. I've been hoping for an update that speeds it up, and calls for less draws.

    • Fool

It's very fast. Feels like an improvement.

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/77537273@N03/ Herman

It feels responsive on my Xperia Z1, but there is still some loading lag. Minor lag, really, but perfectionists wouldn't approve.

  • BAM1789

Next is gmail with that blue action bar that leaked earlier. Interesting.

    • Dude!

I guess Google is abandoning some design choices they cemented with Jelly Bean. Overflow is disappearing and the action bar is losing importance.

Kind of feel bad to app developers. Every couple of years there is a slew of changes in android design.

      • Aaron Jaeger

I'm sure developers get a little peeved by this. Hopefully the Android development tools and APIs released in the future make the transition simple.

Google has historically not been afraid to make big changes, even if it pisses some people off. That is one of the reasons Google is able to do so much: if you worry too much about what is already out there, you cannot move forward quickly. I hope they continue this trend and keep innovating as quickly as their keyboards will let them.

    • 4wgrf

That ios-ish looking app is ugly. i hope Google never release that prototype into any final build, ever

  • brnpttmn

They've finally added sorting of checked items on lists. Now if they would add shared notes.

  • usaff22

The action bar becomes translucent when you scroll down!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      That's not new.

  • http://patrollpl.tk/ Cadence

I love the style, it's just so simple, not like fancy gradients and lights on iOS. It doesn't make you puke rainbow.

  • Suhas Vemuri

Need more features.. Sorting into folders or groups/labels is much needed.. One day it'll replace my evernote.. An iOS app would be good too, to get more people to use it..

    • Zak Taccardi

part of what makes keep create is its simplicity.

      • Suhas Vemuri

Simplicity at the cost of necessary features is not good. I'd rather have folders/labels/groups than a half empty navigation menu.. maybe thats just me though.. cheers

        • selonmoi

Definitely not just you. It's absurd that there's no support for organization or collaboration.

    • codemonkey85

Seriously... where is the iOS app? It's been over a year! :-/

  • usaff22

Looks great! I hope they changed they have changed the note colors, they used to be quite different from the web view.

Edit: They've also changed it, so that checked items appear below unchecked ones in lists.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

That's part of the new checklist settings.

    • philknall

Just noticed this, very welcome change as I was tired of having to drag them around.

  • Sonorat

I want a password protection, not a flashy bar :(

  • Wilfred Moralee

Still pointless, missing loads of features compared to evernote, will look again when they catch up.

    • http://tsurufoto.com/ Aaron Tsuru

It's more of a super post-it note app, not a evernote bohemoth.

  • skitchbeatz

    still no shared notes? :-(

    • blakjakdavy

Yeah collaborative notes, like with Google docs, would be amazing. I'd use that all the time for a camping checklist with friends, or a family shopping list.

Whoa, imagine a collaborative keep list with a location reminder so anytime anyone collaborating on the same list walked into a store they'd get a reminder!

      • Hobie Helbich

        THIS^^ is the dream.

    • Aaron Berlin

I'm amazed that we don't have this yet. Literally the only thing I want are shared lists for grocery shopping.

      • J_Pod

I created another google account just for that reason, to have an account on both mine and my wife's devices that we could share our keep list!

      • codemonkey85

Same here... especially in conjunction with location / time reminders.

  • Christian

So why is there still an overflow menu button when all it does is change the list view? They could've just made it into a dedicated button.

  • vyktorsouza

This new action bar will work great with Tinted StatusBar :D
I'll be perched for the other updates today

  • Daniel Traynor

That new action bar would work great for tinted status bars!
And I think that's the direction they're going. Awesome if it is!

  • blakjakdavy

Translucent nav bar would have been nice, Google...

    • vyktorsouza

get ready for the "kitkat guidelines are for maps and gallery only" nazis XD

      • miri

It's for immersive/dynamic imagery, which includes maps, photos, large background images etc. Extending a list view by an arbitrary amount doesn't quite suit.

      • Arthur Jolivet

Currently, maps and gallery haven't kitkat guideline. It's only Google Now Launcher, Play movies (and Youtube) of course, and play books.

      • Bluewall

        It serves no purpose.

      • Bluewall

        It serves no purpose.

  • sdcoiner76

Still waiting for the ability to sync/collaborate lists/notes with others.

    • Suhas Vemuri

Nice.. i haven't thought about this. since keep is already based on Drive I believe this isn't too much work..

  • Bradley Ruiz

If you press the settings button (Galaxy S3 here) you get the option of single-column view, dont know if its new but i never seen it before

    • SSDROiD

Nope, that's been there for a while :)

  • miri

Tempted to enable side-loading apps on my Moto X. Keep is one of my most used apps...

    • h4rr4r

Why would you need to do that?
This apk is signed with Google's key, you can install it without enabling sideloading.

      • miri

[Rephrase] Without enabling installation of apps from unknown sources. New phone, figured I wouldn't disable security features or go too crazy with customization.

  • Hobie Helbich

The image text search isn't working very well for me.... I've been trying with various things with very simple fonts. Anyone had luck with the image search that could perhaps provide some insight?

    • Jonny Scott

Agreed. I haven't been able to transcribe any images. Would be interested to see if anyone has gotten this feature to work.

    • fzammetti

Worked for me taking a picture of a magazine cover. Took a few (30?) seconds before the search would find anything though so my suspicion is it's got to go to a Google server for OCR'ing before it's searchable.

      • Hobie Helbich

I tried hitting the overflow button and selecting "trascribe image" but no luck... i figured you wouldn't need to manually do that though. so maybe it only works with ads/books/magazines, ect?

    • Alexei Watson

I hope it works, it would be very handy for me.. I use keep for my pre-paid vouchers, which are printed on a receipt with my groceries. being able to copy and paste out of the photo would make recharging a real charm.

    • subtex

Seems the OCR only works for new notes. None of my old notes have the "transcribe text" option in the overflow menu. Only new images since I updated.

  • andy gowrley

Now if we could have Lists or notes you could sync with others (Yes I know Gdrive does it but still be nice if keep also could do for the household shoping list or Holiday packing list) and a iOS app would be handy for those who have strayed.

  • Keeprox

The animations for opening each individual note seems updated. Also whatever team at Google that works on KEEP is the sh*t.

  • http://www.maverickcreative.ca/ Joshua Richards

Just want to have sharable lists. Where a friend can check things off / edit a list as well. Then I can finally put that ugly wunderlist to the curb.

    • fzammetti

My wife and I do this all the time- requires having another account on your device, but it works well enough when you do. I just add her account and don't sync anything but Keep.

  • remister

It would be great to insert a picture mid-note keeping, instead of having all pictures attached at the top.

  • Zak Taccardi

Awesome update. Still needs to be integrated into Drive.

As for other missing features, my hope is that we could create a "notebook" - which is just a collection of notes (that could be shared with other people). Almost like having multiple keep accounts within one google account.

  • Taylor00

As much as I like Keep, I can't use it for anything other than groceries and quick notes. Evernote would be my main go to note taking app.

  • http://asszem.blog.hu Andras Olah

Links are still not clickable on Desktop version...

  • br_hermon

Meh... maybe its just me but I'm still waiting for all this functionality to be merged with Google Docs into one single app. I don't see the point of Keep. Between Google Docs and Google Now, I don't see a need for it. Anyone care to enlighten me?

    • Aaron Jaeger

There is definitely some overlap. A lot of Google products start that way, though. They tend to integrate later, presumably when they feel everything is ready.

  • miri

Doesn't seem quite finished. The search bar is still grey/blue and looks awkward against the yellow action bar

  • MG

they've could ad password protection notes.

  • wjrandon

My kingdom for some gosh darn folders in Google Keep.

    • miri

Most of their apps (Keep included) aren't the appropriate use case for it and using it anyway would encourage/legitimize questionable design decisions (though it's absence in Maps is a bit of a mystery). They may make adjustments to status/nav bar behavior in the future for different use cases but until then, don't expect much from them.

  • mark

But still no way to print......

  • syxbit

I'd love to drop Evernote, and switch to keep, but there is no folder structure. How are you supposed to keep hundreds of notes organized?
Search isn't enough. I need folders, or tags.

  • Cole

I actually was the first to report an update and I got credit for it! This made my day. Thanks AP!

  • http://spmvs.com/ wvpv

So dumb that you still can't reorder notes...oh wait, nm.

  • Mike Gonzalez

i wish they would take advantage of those transparent bars so the whole screen gets the same color

  • Bartosz Witkowski

Oh Google, why navbar and statusbar isn't transparent?

  • Bartosz Witkowski

Oh Google, why navbar and statusbar isn't transparent?

  • Jalok Xlem

Dang it Google. I was hoping that you guys could finally add tags/folders for our notes.ugh, whatever.

  • Tomáš Petrík

The website was updated as well, just sayin'...

  • Marcus

Does is fix the insane battery usage I get from Keep even when not using it?

  • Ryuuie

Oh God. That yellow is...really yellow. :(

  • http://www.richardjang.com/ Richard

I am hoping that there will be category mode also to separate the different notes.

  • whispy_snippet

I love keep. One of my most used apps. This looks like a great update!

  • didibus

I wish they added Categories for notes. That's the only feature I miss from it.

  • fzammetti

Only thing missing from Keep IMO is drawn notes. I want to be able to scribble a quick UI mockup and save it in Keep but I can't. Don't need a fancy drawing system, just a simple scribble spot would do it.

  • Hobie Helbich

noticed a glitch: When you add a new note from the widget, it defaults to grey, but if you change the color, the color of the action bar DOES NOT change. It stays grey, and looks really weird.... it only does this if you add a note from the widget; not if you do inside the app itself. See the images for more:

  • autre_pensee

Too bad they didnt add the one feature I've been hoping for.
    Sharable/collaborative notes.
Imagine project to-do list, or grocery list etc. These are all items that would be useful to share with other people and be able to collaborate on those the same way gdrive does it.

  • DoubleP90

I believe there's a new animation when opening the notes

  • farew

Why is Keep's app icon different from the web icon ????

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Meh, still not better than Evernote

  • Mislav

Still unable to easily set location reminder for work or home location. Keep doesn't pick up my address when I just enter work OR home as a location. That is my major complaint for app ever since it has been release.

  • Abdulrahman

translucent status and navigation bar for god sake!

  • tym0

Hmmm, Google is making change to the action bar: they got rid of the small line at the bottom of it and it looks way more flat now, I'm not sure how I feel about it.

  • Taco Monster

A redditor found an awesome new feature: Conflict resolution between simultaneous edits!

I don't really see what's holding them back from shared notes now.

  • Cb2014

Could someone please confirm that widgets won't work for Android4.0 but not the widgets?!?

    • Jacob Belser

I'm also having an issue with the widget. I run 4.0.4 and the widget just says loading..... Ugh, didn't think I'd have to turn off auto-update for Keep. Hopefully I can find an old .apk to install somewhere and roll it back.

  • ersouza

I think note sharing might be right around the corner given the new conflict resolution feature that's quietly appeared in this release.
