In case you need more proof that the new HTC One is the worst kept secret in mobile tech since the Nexus 5, we offer People's Exhibit A W. This video gives the Verizon-branded M8 almost 10 minutes of time in the spotlight and provides a really good comparison to the first-generation HTC One.

At this stage, there's very little we don't know about HTC's new flagship. Nevertheless, the company is set to debut the M8 to the world tomorrow, and the device should be on sale soon after the press conferences. If you're on the fence about this phone, this video provides a lot of useful information to help you make an informed purchase.

Thanks, @legoalcubo!

Considering the 4MP and 2MP coupling, does the software include anything to act as an optical zoom like Corephotonic's prototype?

    • x3haloed

Oh look, a post that adds to the discussion! I think it's 4 ultrapixels. I don't know how many megapixels that translates to. As to whether or not optical zoom is enabled, I don't think anyone knows yet. I really wish these leaks spent more time focusing on the benefits of the dual camera array.

  • Saraladevi S

i feel like i m already in March 25th evening!

  • shojus

This should have been the specs of the M7... Shitty camera and still maxed out at 2gb of ram with a slightly faster processor and gpu. NOT worth the upgrade imo! Poor HTC can never win.

    • Michael Lee

Who needs more than 2gb of RAM? I never go below 700mb on my HTC One M7.

      • shojus

Who needs a quad core processor? It's how technology evolves... A lot of the newer phones will all have 3gb of ram, besides the M8, which is lagging behind again.

        • The Maverick

at the moment, not me, im happy with my how my Moto X runs.

          • shojus

And I am perfectly happy with my HTC One and that is why I am kinda bashing the M8 because it's not a big enough upgrade to justify switching phones and trying to figure out how to S-Off the damn thing. PLEASE Verizon pick up the Find 7.... (dreaming) ;)

          • The Maverick

i agree as a previous owner on the One, i find this quite meh,

however i hope it does well to keep HTC in the game.

          • shojus

Trust me, I don't want to see HTC fail but they are...

        • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Lagging behind what? The S5? Wrong. That has 2GB too not a big deal at all.

          • shojus

Note 3, LG G Pro 2, Sony Xperia Z2, Oppo Find 7 just to name a few...

          • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Note 3? Dated Proc. Pro2? Dated Proc. How about comparing new phones. The Z2 is the only relevant to one.

          • shojus

The LG just came out as well as the Oppo Find 7 (announced) and the Xperia Z2 with 3gb of ram correct?? Even the Note 3 came with 3gb of ram and that came out months ago! That is my whole point... You apparently are not understanding. They are all running modified versions of the snapdragon 800 (overclocked) with the exact same gpu, Correct? What do you think they will benchmark at? All of them higher or equivalent to the M8 I am thinking and that is not including 4k video and OIS for the camera's that will stomp on this one (or two). I've done my research, have you? Seems u just want to argue about a phone that falls short yet again except for the excellent build quality which I do appreciate as I own the M7. Don't have too much more to say to you especially since you seem like a tad bit of a Fanboy? Have a great night. ;)

          • OSagnostic

The Snapdragon 801 has higher frequency CPU, GPU, ISP and memory interface. It also adds support for eMMC 5 and dual sim.

          • shojus

Once again, "modified version of the snapdragon 800"... Still a Krait 400 and in no way does it put the 800 to shame. It's not like going from the 600 to the 800 but I do know the differences of the chipsets. Thank you for fully clarifying though as it does help to explain the differences.

          • andddlay

I'd hardly say the processor is dated in the note 3...still flies.

I'd love to get the Z2, but spending $900 to import it isn't ideal for me imo

      • Bob G

Tell that to all the HTC lovers who slammed Samsung's Galaxy S5 when it retained 2GB of RAM lol.

Sad when Android peeps start turning on each other :(

    • x3haloed

On what basis do you claim that the camera is shitty?

      • shojus

I guess we will have to see but I have owned several HTC devices including the M7 and if it's anything like the cameras on previous devices than I would not expect much. The camera on the M7 is garbage and it appears as if they left it at 4 "Ultrapixels" and just added a 2nd camera? They are known to be quite gimmicky but you are correct, I do not know yet but will know very soon. :)

  • Torin

And the sleep/wake switch is on the top
    Xperia Z2 here I come!

    • Yikes

One handed screenshots are nigh impossible without a setup in some way similar. Stupid Moto .

    • blairh

You can wake the phone with a swipe. Or use double tap to wake and sleep.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

You don't need to press that button to unlock the phone... No problem there.

    • Martin

You have double tap to wake up and put to sleep.. Not sure why you need the button :-)

  • Fonce Falooda

AND it's a Verizon exclusive for the foreseeable future?!!

HTC had my attention but just lost it again. Better luck next year.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Shawn De Cesari

There is absolutely no tangible proof of that.

      • Fonce Falooda

        And now there is.

No T-Mobile, dinky little toy camera. Moving on.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I don't trust that rumor. It could be an in-store exclusive at best, for a few weeks. But online you should be able to buy from other carriers.

      • x3haloed

Thanks for commenting on this. The video-maker's comment about the phone being exclusive to Verizon at launch was one of the few pieces of information I hadn't heard anywhere else before. I hope it's not true!

    • The Maverick

it'll most likely be a colour exclusive

    • jfn0802

HTC announced they would have a GPE so it is not Verizon only... I think the video maker is wrong

  • Spider_Pig27

Only Verizon exclusive at launch day? Sh** No wonder samsung is ahead of HTC. It would have been nice if they would just have made it available for all carriers at launch day. How Sad HTC SMFH

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Don't trust everything you read.

      • Dario

I smell an AP review using an AT&T phone coming real soon, like in hours....

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

          Don't trust everything you smell.

          • shojus

Don't trust anything that smells fishy!

      • shojus

Verizon is going to get the M8 with a fully unlocked bootloader and a special edition 3gb model with a 23 megapixel camera and no HTC logo. Trust me, I work for Verizon! ;) HA HA HA

        • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

At least try to be funny

          • shojus

That was a stab at Verizon seeing they lock down all of their phones and always are late to the game such as yourself. At least try not to be a douche bag?

  • cbolton97

    Sounds like an HTC commercial...

    • Bob G

Haha I thought I was the only one that felt that way!

  • Hello

Add on-screen buttons but keep the massive chin bezel? Way to waste the extra screen real estate.

    • SuyashSrijan

Do you even know how the internals of the phone are arranged? Maybe they needed that extra space for other components, perhaps due to the new dual camera setup and decided to cover that extra area with a bezel (because obviously the display won't extend further) ? Stop complaining about the bezel ffs.

      • J_Pod

Um, the front panel is all one glass piece anyway. The internals have nothing to do with anything. The real thing to think about is that they probably didn't have a screen manufacturer that would make the 1080p screen that long, it'd lose its presumably 16:9 dimensions.

        • SuyashSrijan

Unless you have opened a M8 yourself and seen how the components of the phone are arranged inside, I call BS on such allegations.

          • J_Pod

I've opened enough M7's to know it's the case for it, and so if the M8's interior is anything similar to the M7 like it's externals are, then there's no bs.

    • x3haloed

I personally prefer the on-screen buttons, but I do agree that it would be nice if they could reclaim the unused bezel space. However, as SuyashSrijan commented below, they most likely needed the additional space for internal components.

    • Jason Croysdill

I do agree with you, i love yhe large screen appeal and doing this just makes the screen look smaller to me. To be fair they probably had no choice. Still, im an old samsung fan, and HTC have produced yet again a much better phone than Samsung have, unlessbof course your always pulling your phone out and saying "oh yeah, I dont have a heartbeat monitor, damn!!"

    • Chris

Honestly, I feel though they should have kept away from onscreen buttons unless they where to rid away with that chin bezel.

I feel like this phone has lost it's elegance from it's predecessor. If I didn't know any better, I would say the M7 was the newer model. I'm holding onto hope that the M8 featured in the various leaked videos, are just prototypes.

  • TechAce01

As much as I like the look of the HTC One, The Onscreen buttons would drive me crazy. So much wasted screen real-estate. The M7 only problem was no SD card slot. The M8 fixes that but breaks the capacitive buttons off the phone. I guess I'll be getting the S5.

    • Bob G

What's worse is that the on-screen buttons take up more space when they decided that their branding on the front was worth an entire bezel level.

Must've learned from Verizon, which explains the Verizon time exclusive at launch.

      • Shrome Khanna

That's not for the sake of branding. The black bar is where the digitiser is, so they had to keep it.

    • usaff22

If that's the only reason why you want an S5 over the One, you should just get the S5. Enjoy your bandaid phone

  • erod434

This phone is begging for pie from paranoid android. With the bezel there it makes so much sense. I can't wait for it to be rooted and bootloader unlocked.

  • James Devenberg

That bottom bezel... This phone could have been nearly the same size as the M7 if they didn't need that bezel

    • Dario

My guess, they needed the space. Was it the right way to go? Probably not because it definitely looks taller than it needs to be. But proof is in the hands on so I will hold off judgement until then.

      • JAD88

They probably did need the space, but couldn't they have moved the screen down a bit so that its even on both sides? All of that empty space just makes it look weird

        • x3haloed

Probably. But maybe not. We don't know.

      • James Devenberg

I had the M7 and it was nearly too tall. This phone is even taller. Sure, it could possibly work, but I feel the odds of that are very low.

  • http://mrmcpowned.com mrmcpowned

"In case you need more proof that the new HTC One is the worst kept secret in mobile tech since the Nexus 5, we offer People's Exhibit A W."

More like People's Exhibit F, for failure to keep anything held secret.

    • Cody Shiranai

Sarcasm or not, you know "W" represent a number sequence of objects or events, not a grade of quality, in this case, "W" as in way too many.

  • Mike

What the hell were they thinking making it so much taller

  • personalizedmall

Android platform is wonderful. I have a galaxy S III and have been very happy with it. Sometimes it misbehaves... but what tech doesn't. HTC looks cool but all my products at home are Samsung.

  • J_Pod

Look what I found as the ad on the AP site!

  • starbucks305

I find the M7 nicer than M8. I don't like the on-screen buttons taking too much screen space and the phone looks too long. I supose they have to leave something for the next M9 also ...

    • zst123

They should have removed the bezel with the HTC logo and place the on-screen buttons there -.-

  • Martin

I have mixed feeling about this phone... I like it, love the aluminum body.. But still not sure about the camera.. Need to watch couple reviews from MKBHD and Soldier, to decide.. If the camera is much better than old HTC One I am in :-)))

  • Jason Croysdill

I never owned the HTC One (M7) but it was always one of those phones I wish I had. Its a great looking phone, as is the M8. I do agree with a lot of comments though about the bezel, just looks a biy strange.
The camera is a big point for me, owning an LG G2, where the camera is amazing, except for indoor shots, where I try to take a picture of my 3 year old, who by the time it actually takes the pic, my little one has wandered off, had tea, been bathed and gone to bed....then the picture takes!! Waiting on reviews of the M8 as I do like the features of the camera, and Im one of those gimmicky loving people.

Also love the video at 5:22, had to actually watch it again as the extra camera just seemed to dissapear.

    • Martin

Do you have KitKat on your G2? It should be a lot faster.

      • Jason Croysdill

Yes Kit Kat installed, (20b), and the phone is smooth as hell. The phone is absolutely amazing, and the camera is second to none, except for low light shots using auto focus, which its defaults at. Its just so slow!! In good loghting conditions, it takes a picture straight away, with amazing clarity! However, that one downside does not stop me loving the phone, and to be fair in my opinions is beating all the latest line up of phones.

  • Simon_K

Xperia Z2 beats both SG5 and HTC One.

    • Cody Shiranai

If it's on your carrier, sure, otherwise, shoo.

    • Toss3

The camera on the Z2 is just a big letdown. The S5 takes nice pictures, but is otherwise quite meh. HTC m8 would have been great if it weren't for that horrible bezel at the bottom. Guess I'll just have to wait for the Nexus 6 / LG G3 and hope Googe puts more effort into making the camera better.

    • Robb Nunya

Great! I can't wait to get it on my carrier...

      Oh wait...

  • Renato Paredes Ara├║jo

HTC can cancel the event now. Nothing to see.

  • Kevin Frost

Hi man, never seen one of your reviews before but i have to say you knocked the ball out of the park on this one. Gr8 review and you covered pretty much all the key points and more. HTC M8 looks a gr8 phone just a shame that carries will milk the cost.
Great job and will defiantly add you to my favourites.

  • laxjosh

Oh HTC. Why is this only a mere 4mm shorter than the One Max? That's ridiculous. If you needed the space, then you need new engineers.

You had a chance to make the perfect smartphone and blew it. Side bezels haven't shrunk in years and the HTC black bar bezel is totally unnecessary.

This was to be my wife's next phone, but she won't consider a phone as big and heavy as this thing.

  • Robb Nunya

Good video, but man, could that guy sound any more like George Takei???

  • Semianonymous

That bezel is indefensible, the phone is enormous, the seams all over the phone make it look like it was glued together (I'm aware that's not actually the case), the battery should be larger if the phone is that big (lg, as far as I'm concerned, set the bar with the g2's 3000mah) AND its Verizon exclusive?

I loved you HTC. I still do. But you need to stop this.
