Our Austrian friends might be in for a surprise the next time they stroll into a local retailer. Google Play gift cards are now live in Austria with no official announcement. The Google support page hasn't even been updated to list Austria yet. That's cool and all, but how about a little heads up next time, Google?

The cards are showing up in 15€, 25€, and 50€ denominations. Our tipster has successfully purchased one in Spar, an Austrian supermarket. Others are also reporting coming across Google Play gift cards in the wild. If they're not in your corner of Austria, it shouldn't be long.

Google recently rolled out services like music and movies to more countries, so an expansion of gift cards would make sense. Maybe the cards are filtering out to more places at this very moment.

    A question:
I live nearby Austria (it is actually closer than the center of the city I live in). If I go there get some gift cards, can I redeem and use the credit in my country, where these gift cards are not launched?

    • Tiemen Tuinstra

If you have the play store in Euro's then you can use these.

      • Tomáš Petrík

I do, we use the same currency (we are in the Eurozone).

        • Sascha Brunner

Actually it says on the back of the card that you are only allowed to redeem these cards in Austria.

          • Tomáš Petrík

One thing is what you are officially allowed to do and another is how it actually works.
Does it just say in Austria, or on a device registered with an Austrian account? Because if they want, I can redeem the card while still in Austria, before going back home from the store.

          • Sascha Brunner

Your Google Wallet home country has to be Austria. Keep in mind that you can't change your home country as long as you have credit remaining.

          • Tomáš Petrík

            Oh... okay.

  • Derek

It's out in HK too :)

We covered the HK rollout extensively already.

Finally! This together with devices being able to purchase for myself (and not having to ask my cousin living in Germany), is a dream come true for me. Now the wait for the Nexus 6 begins.

  • Peter Bognar

Oh god, that's just the neighbouring country. So close yet so far...

    • Carla Adam

Quietly, as opposed to someone on a street corner, SCREAMING about them. Quite honestly, that is the ONLY way I will buy auto insurance.
