Okay, so that camera voice command Google pointed out the other day wasn't terribly useful, but the new music command is pretty cool. Just pull up voice search in whatever way you prefer, and tell your device to "play some music." That's it – the tunes will flow.

This action immediately boots you into Google Play Music and starts I'm Feeling Lucky Radio. If you have All Access, that playlist will include a wide selection of content based on your listening habits. If not, it's just the music you've uploaded to Google Play Music.

It saves you a few taps and it's a neat trick for parties. This and the camera thing seem geared toward Android Wear, but it's still cool on a phone. Enjoy.

  • Wazzifer

    Now that's pretty nifty.

  • Phil Oakley

All this voice stuff is going to be super cool with Wear (and Glass, but same thing).

Pumped. By the end of this year the Android landscape could look very different.

    • Simon Belmont

Totally agree with you. They're adding voice related stuff at a faster pace lately, which I really like.

I'm just waiting for them to add commands to turn things like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on/off. Also, the ability to read me and respond to my texts and emails hands-free.

      • joser116

I really want them to add the driving mode from the Moto X to stock Android.

      • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

But they still have all this stuff available in, like, 5-6 languages, so the rest of the world simply doesn't care about all these new voice-triggered functions when you clearly can't use them in your native language.

This is one of the reasons I NEVER use Google Now - for search I already have a search bar on top of my homescreen in which I can easily type what I need to find.
That and it's an awful battery hog + thank god I can turn it off on GNL

        • Simon Belmont

Hmm. To be honest, I use Google Now and it doesn't hit my battery badly at all.

Actually, I tested it once and went about my normal daily routine with it on and off and the difference was pretty negligible. But, your mileage may vary (pun intended).

I am Hungarian, but I always had my devices in English. My experience is that the localized versions are never as feature rich or bug free as the version which was made for the largest market.

I am using Google Now with the xposed/tasker extention, so I do have my "Turn on bluetooth", "Measure temperature" and "What's up?" commands. I wish there was an official API for Google Now though, so I could publish these tools.

I did publish a little app with which you can wake you newer Samsung phones to Google Now with your voice: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hu.viczian.deathtosvoice

    • Jason Brown

im looking forward to it. it's great to see what a company can do when their primary focus is "search"

      • pfmiller

And yet, still no search in Hangouts!

        • Simon Belmont

Yeah. Hoping this comes with the Google Voice integration.

I miss being able to search my messaging threads. Totally agree.

  • blakjakdavy

I hope they extend this to include categories some day...instead of curating a playlist for a situation, sometimes it'd be nice to say "play some party music" or "play some rock music" etc and let Google do the work.

    • Kevin Davies

the music app from samsung has the music square, where you can ask the app to choose between exciting, joyful, passionate and calm. Cool feature that I would love to see in the Play music app

    • Baleeted

You can say "play some jazz" and it'll play Jazz. Pretty cool eh?

edit: for some reason it doesn't work now.

edit mark 2: play pop music works.

edit mark 3: play smooth jazz works

  • Simon Belmont

    Wow! That's really weird.

I JUST tried this command earlier today because I'd gone here to get an official list of Google Search commands: https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/2842392?hl=en . I actually thought this was a command that had been around for a while because of that. Awesome coindence!

  • brkshr

Google's analytics are messed up on Google Music. I just tried this and it started playing rap music... I listen to mostly classic rock, thrash rock and metalcore.

Also, HOW DO I TELL GOOGLE TO NEVER EVER PLAY NICKELBACK!?!? I give them a thumbs down every time and Google continues to play their songs on my rock station.

Well it's midnight, damn right, we're wound up too tight
I've got a fist full of whiskey, the bottle just bit me
      Oh
That shit makes me bat shit crazy
We've got no fear, no doubt, all in balls out

      We're going off tonight
      To kick out every light
      Take anything we want
      Drink everything in sight
We're going till the world stops turning
While we burn it to the ground tonight
      Oh

We're screaming like demons, swinging from the ceiling
I got a fist full of fifties, tequila just hit me
      Oh
We got no class, no taste, no shirt, and shit faced
We got it lined up, shot down, firing back straight crown

      We're going off tonight
      To kick out every light
      Take anything we want
      Drink everything in sight
We're going till the world stops turning
While we burn it to the ground tonight
      Oh

Ticking like a time bomb, drinking till the nights gone
Well get you hands off of this glass, last call my ass
Well no chain, no lock, and this train won't stop
We got no fear, no doubt, all in balls out

      We're going off tonight
      To kick out every light
      Take anything we want
      Drink everything in sight
We're going till the world stops turning
While we burn it to the ground tonight
      Oh
      We're going off tonight
      To kick out every light
      Take anything we want
      Drink everything in sight
We're going till the world stops turning
While we burn it to the ground tonight

Ooh, the former WWE RAW theme!

    • Owen Finn

It knows you better than you know yourself.

  • Grahaman27

"shuffle music" would be appreciated as well. (or obey the "on device" music im feeling lucky radio, which should shuffle music)

    • Jay T

Agreed. I'd use this all the time if it could do that, but it's not useful at the moment because I don't have unlimited data. 😔

      • CoreRooted

You don't need unlimited data. Pin the artists you want when on WiFi. You can set GPM to only play locally cached music in Settings.

  • Anon

Not working for me. Nor does the "take a picture" stuff.

Do you specifically need Google Now to be enabled for these new features to work? Because I just have Search without Now enabled.

    • David Margolin

      Oh God! I can't even...

    • Simon Belmont

Google Now doesn't need to be enabled for most voice commands to work. I actually just switched Google Now off and the "Play some music" and "Take a picture" commands both still worked.

      Hope this helps. Cheers.

  • CRKT

I only wish they would implement more languages for their voice stuff, sounds even weirder talking in English with your phone/glass/watch in public here in Sweden.
Should be possible to crowd source voice commands from various countries for faster adoption rate, if not I don't see how voice will ever take off in a big way.

    • Prezes Dyrektor

you have a point but those commands are simple English and there is no easy way of developing similar commands in the hundreds of languages around the world. Let's see how Google sorts this problem out, for now better get used to people staring at you when using those commands (happened to me yesterday when i wanted to save maps for offline)

  • kali bred

Had this feature before the last update for the camera came

  • supremekizzle

Does anyone know what 'I'm feeling lucky' is based off of? Whenever I type in an artist and play their top songs, it never shows up in listening history. However, if I play a specific song from a specific album it will. Is it based on previous radio stations played only?

  • Rick

Just tried it and my Nexus 7 told me it "Couldn't prepare instant mix. Please try again." Apparently there are still some bugs to work out.

    • Calvin Uijlen

Isn't that an issue with Google Play Music rather then Google Now?

  • Andrei

For some reason when I say play some music it ain't opening google play thing, it just searches on the web

  • Tomen8r

Would actually work if I didn't have seven or eight Android devices nearby. All of them go off. Need ability to individually name each seperate Google now. Besides Jarvis.

  • http://www.LOVEanon.org/ Michael Oghia (Ogie)

So, when I boot up Google Search and give the command, it goes to Play Music, but has an error when trying to play a feeling lucky mix. I don't have All Access, but I do have music on my Nexus 4 (4.4.2). Does anyone else have this problem?

    • Paddy Landau

I have seen this error posted a number of times on various forums, and I have the same problem. I found that when I'm connected via WiFi, it fails, but when I'm connected via mobile data, it works. Bizarre!

      • http://www.LOVEanon.org/ Michael Oghia (Ogie)

Interesting! Still doesn't work for me though. But it's ok, I barely use GPM anyway (I just use it for the tracks I've uploaded). To be honest, as a Mac user, I really hope Apple releases an iTunes app for Android. It would just be so much easier...

        • Paddy Landau

I wouldn't bank on Apple releasing iTunes for Android. Android is too strong a competitor for iPhone and iPad!

          • http://www.LOVEanon.org/ Michael Oghia (Ogie)

            Oh, I know :(

  • hocestquisumus

OK, so I tap on voice commands? Great! Why not tap on Google Music instead? Guess it can save all of 0.2 seconds of my lifetime if it understands on the first attempt...

    • CoreRooted

Unless you are running 4.4 with the GEL launcher. Then it's just "Ok google" from the home screen. No tapping involved at all.

      • hocestquisumus

It does this on all models or only on the N5? I'll have to give it another try, then.

        • CoreRooted

I have it on my G2 with stock (rooted) 4.4.2. Works as long as the screen is on.
