Google's begun rolling out an update to the Maps app on Android today, bringing it to version 7.7. While not much seems to have changed, a full 0.X release typically denotes at least some kind of new feature or significant alteration, though thus far we've really only seen one.

What’s New

For the moment, all we're noticing in the new version of Maps are the "Upcoming events" listings populating some place listings. For example, search for "AT&T Park" in San Francisco, pull up the place card, and you'll see a list like the one below.

Update: You can now save pins dropped anywhere you want, even in the middle of an ocean (thanks, Adrián Ayllón):

Left: old Maps. Right: new Maps

We're not noticing any other user-facing changes in the update, but we did manage to pull the following new strings from Maps 7.7, so if you notice something that might be related, definitely let us know. One of those strings seems to indicate automatic dimming in turn-by-turn mode will be making a return at some point, though it's nowhere to be found right now:

    <string name="USE_POWER_SAVINGS_TITLE">Save Power</string>

<string name="USE_POWER_SAVINGS_MESSAGE">Conserve power by dimming your screen between turns.</string>

    <string name="USE_POWER_SAVINGS_ACCEPT">Dim screen between turns</string>

    <string name="USE_POWER_SAVINGS_DECLINE">No thanks</string>

A few others seem to relate to the reviewing system, offering new options (reporting an owner's response to a review) and some new dialogues for exceeding character limits. Woo!

    <string name="REPORT_OWNER_RESPONSE">Report owner response</string>

    <string name="REVIEW_CHAR_LIMIT_INLINE">Character limit exceeded</string>

    <string name="REVIEW_CHAR_LIMIT_TITLE">Over character limit</string>

<string name="REVIEW_CHAR_LIMIT_MESSAGE">Your review exceeds the character limit. Please shorten and try again.</string>

Otherwise, we haven't seen much in the way of changes. Regardless, you can get the new APK from the mirrors below.

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

Still need the 4.0+ version of the APK if anyone's got it.

Also, if you see anything we missed, especially the method to activate dimming, please let us know. Dimming was removed in Maps v7, and though I hate it myself, I suppose some people would want it back.

I wish I had the version that still navigated. My navigation disappeared a long time ago, came back one time with a big beta warning, then disappeared again.

      • WitnessG

What do you mean the version that still navigates? The current version of maps still have navigation in it.

        • remister
          • Matthew Fleisher

Yep, my blue arrow disappeared and I can't find Google navigation anywhere on my phone or in the market. It just shows me where I am but no directions how to get anywhere.

          • remister

Yea, they took that away a few updates ago, when they implemented the NEW Google Maps, taking away Transit Navigation, Manual Offline Maps, and the Stand Alone Navigation app.

          • Steve

You guys need to look a little harder. Navigation has never been a separate app. There used to be a shortcut to the Navigation component of Maps available which is gone and replaced with a pretty useless Directions shortcut, but can easily be added back with a Launcher that supports creating shortcuts to App activities (e.g Nova / Apex). If you don't have that capability search for and pick a location in Maps, hit the the blue 'Route' icon, wait a few seconds for the route to calculate and then hit the blue 'Start Navigating' icon...viola.

          • piet
        • Matthew Fleisher

It did, but now it just tracks where I am. It stopped telling me where to go several updates back.

          • remister

So when you search for a place, at the bottom, it doesn't give you a car icon to navigate the route?

      • http://anaershadowynomaly.deviantart.com Farran Lee

When you search for a route under the driving tab, the results have a "Start navigation" button with a blue arrow under them. And if you open a route result, there is a "Start" button with a blue arrow as well. This opens the Navigation view which tells you where to go.

        • Matthew Fleisher

My guess is you haven't updated recently and I suggest you don't if you use that feature often. Read the other comments below. I'm not crazy, Google did take it out.

          • http://anaershadowynomaly.deviantart.com Farran Lee

Well I literally just installed this apk. I tapped the Navigation button to double check it, and a voice spoke to me and told me to turn right out of my road in 100 metres. So I guess you're talking about a different kind of navigation.

          • Matthew Fleisher

You must not be in the US, we don't use metres.

          • http://anaershadowynomaly.deviantart.com Farran Lee

Thank you for extracting the most relevant point

          • Matthew Fleisher

Another poster already confirmed that the feature I refer to was removed so maybe it was only the US version. Lucky you.

    • remister

I still want the Navigation feature for Public Transportation back!

    • mgfjd12

There are still functions missing from this apk.

Google Update Wednesdays striking again. I also got an update for Chrome Beta.

  • guest

If nothing really has changed, why not just wait for the auto-update?

    • SSDROiD

Because some people, me included, think staged rollout is a thing of the past with the Internet perfectly capable of sending out all updates at once as long as the companies do it properly. I know, I know, there are probably good reasons for staged rollouts, but just like my TV shows, I refuse to wait until the companies think it's time for me - I want it at the same time as everybody else!

      • Phil Oakley

It's not that the internet isn't capable - it's that if there's a bug, only a % of users will have the bug. Example: I work at a company where we pushed out an app, but had a serious bug that we'd missed when we were testing (to be fair it was difficult to make this bug replicate itself, but it was serious all the same). Due to the staged rollout, only 10% of users would have had the build with that bug. As soon as we got wind of it, we pulled the release, updated the app, and pushed out a new build, bug free. If that hadn't been a staged rollout we could've had a disaster on our hands.

        • SSDROiD

I'm fine with testing releases with a small percentage of users, but that's what I feel a Beta group is for. Lots of people love trying out Betas, and I can imagine especially Google wouldn't have any problems getting a decent % of users with all kinds of devices to test releases, before then pushing them out to the general public. The same way critics get TV episodes before they air on TV, in order to prepare them. I'm not expecting to be getting releases at an Alpha stage just as I'm not expecting to be getting TV episodes when critics do, but I'd prefer it if I did receive it along with everyone else when the Beta group gives the OK signal. That may just be me, though :P

Because there's always a chance we didn't spot something.

  • dan

I think there is a new Google Search 3.3. update as well

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Yup, and we're on it as well.

    • Spasillium

YouTube has been updated to 5.5.26 also.

Find videos, playlists and channels together in search results
      * Tabs on channel pages, for activity, videos and playlists
      * Various bug fixes and improvements, notably a fix for the Cast icon appearing over the player when Bluetooth is connected

      Loving update Wednesdays!

      • David Trejo

        new icon, and mode dogfood?

        • Spasillium

That's what I have now and it won't open (Maybe I have to uninstall the public version first.) I'm curious to see what's inside it.

        • whispy_snippet

Hahaha oh Google! That icon! Bone headed move... (Sorry guys, I went there).

        • SSDROiD

And push notifications when people you subscribe to upload new videos :D

          • joser116

            I've been having that.

      • SSDROiD

I've had that update for a long time and that changelog has remained unchanged for weeks?

      • whispy_snippet

I wish we could create YouTube playlists even when not casting to another display.

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

        That's the old changelog.

  • Drago

Update Wednesday for the win. Yay. Looks like Google Search was updated too. Keeping fingers crossed for Bluetooth activation when your device is asleep.

EDIT: Did you notice the YouTube icon after the update? It's in the shape of a dog bone. WTF?

  • Askaryan

Still lags on a Nexus 5. Check out Maps on iOS, so smooth and the Snapdragon 800 could do the same. This is a joke.

    • SSDROiD

That's weird. On my Note 3, which uses TouchWiz that people call laggy all the time, Google Maps is perfectly smooth and fully-functioning. I'm starting to think you're a troll :P

    • whispy_snippet

Yeah, but Maps on iOS has no data. Nothing to stress a device!

    • deadno

      nexus 5 here....smooth as butter
      think you need to RMA

  • ltredbeard

I just want to know how to get a list of results again. For example, if i search lowes I want to see the list of lowes in the area. I used to be able to swipe the bottom and see more but even that only works sometimes.

  • wjrandon

I still miss the old version of Google Maps... you know, before it was dumbed down for soccer moms.

    • neto

  • Martin Cohen

When are they adding "Save as Contact"? Damn them!

  • cabbiebot

My single greatest wish for Maps is to highlight (with blue text, or whatever) the current leg of the route you are traveling. I prefer using "Get Directions" with maps over using TBT navigation, but lets say i have a list of 10 different steps of exits, street changes and such. Well, if I map my route and get on the road and switch to Play Music to start some sweet streaming all-access radio, when I go back to Maps I have to now figure out which leg of my route I'm on. Why not just highlight that so its instantly glanceable information instead of, you know, making me have to think about it and figure it out.

  • Rod

Is anyone else's Nexus 4 pointing erroneously in Maps app? I point the device somewhere, but in Maps the arrows is always 30 degress off, or even more sometimes...

  • rocco6

    minSdkVersion=18 but targetSdkVersion=17 WTF???

  • ronjr123

What I miss the most is the calling out of street names when making a turn, instead of turn right or left. They went backwards with it by doing this.

  • mgfjd12

since they removed search nearby, the maps application is crap. It used to be my companion in my business and leisure travel trips. Driving in the interstate, it was easy to find restaurants, distances, and directions just by reading the list. I uninstalled the app for three weeks and I didn't even remember the app wasn't there.

  • mesmorino

Yeah, but can you add Barcelona to offline maps?

  • drvadlamudi

Yet I still can't edit the name of a stared location from the app. For example I may want to save a starred location as (my friend's name) house.

  • TheLastAngel

I wish tgey gave us more MAPPING capabilities. I really miss the measure tool and the scale bar.

  • jun

They dont have point A to point B directions. No point on map on starting point.

  • Gregor Smith

Still no luck on the Navigation view with no destination returning? That was the handiest thing about the old style maps with separate Navigation "app", now monitoring traffic on the go is likely to cause an accident

  • Rob in Kuwait

Goggle maps updated along with google search. Thank goodness for being able to save pin drops, would even better if we could name our new pin drops. You think?

  • Joshua Talley

The power savings strings describe the behavior of the Google Glass version of navigation. The display turns off until just before the next turn.

  • Elad

It looks like upcoming event cards have disappeared from both the Android application and the web application. There is no such card for AT&T Park or any other venue that I tried.

  • http://bit.ly/TylerHilliard Tyler Hilliard

'Catch the last train' option and adjust time line on desktop options. Are these new?

    • miri

No. If they haven't always been there, then they were introduced shortly after the redesign.

  • Arcest

This new version unexpectedly closes during navigation from time to time.

  • Luis G

I noticed the dim feature while on a road trip this weekend, 12hr drive, might only be for long distances? Haven't tried it for local places yet so I can't confirm.

  • sjamie

Is it possible to search for food, gas, etc. ALONG THE ROUTE to a destination already in progress? This was very easy in version 6.x.
