Hey look, everyone - Google sent us all a treat tonight in the form of the first Play Store update in over 3 months. And we just love new things (hi, Kirill!). As usual, you'll find the apk for v4.6.16 towards the bottom of this post.

What's New?

So, what's new in Play Store 4.6.16 compared to 4.5.10?

Batch install in My apps -> All tab

Update #1: Rather than batch removing (note: I'm talking about removing apps that aren't installed from the All list here, not mass uninstalling) multiple apps in My apps -> All tab, we can now mass install them. This makes installing familiar apps on new devices a whole lot easier, though still very much time-consuming. The batch remove functionality was, well, removed. (Thanks, AudioAw2015 and Jeremy Smith!)

Removing apps from My apps -> All no longer jumps to the top of the list

Update #2: Previously, simply removing an app from the My apps -> All list forced you all the way back up to the top of the list, which was extremely annoying and unnecessary. No longer the case - the app now disappears from the list, but your position remains the same. (Thanks, David Coiner!)

New Require password option

Following the recent class action lawsuit over in-app purchases, we now have a new option to always require the account password for purchases, not just once per 30 minutes. If you have kids, you should probably turn this on now.

Settings and Help finally moved to slideout nav

Settings and Help have moved - you can now find them in the slideout navigation drawer. Other Google apps were updated in a similar fashion recently, so we completely expected the Play Store to follow suit. In related news, this means that the unnecessary overflow menu on the start screen is gone.

Confusing Auto-add widgets setting renamed

The "widget" part of Auto-add widgets was really confusing since it was actually adding icons and not widgets. It's all fixed now, finally.

We can finally force Play Store self-update

Finally, we can trigger a self-update action on the Play Store itself - just tap the Build version in the settings. This will come in super handy for fresh OS installs that ship with outdated Play Stores.

IAPs now included in the App permissions screen

Following the IAP indicator added in the previous version, another warning about IAPs is now included in the App permissions list when you press Install.

Google+ +1 counts are now exact for large quantities

This one is pretty self-explanatory. If you still don't get it... drugs are bad, mkay?

Continuous security verification

There are a bunch of strings and code for continuous app verification that we learned about several weeks ago:

<string name="package_malware_cancel">"Don't install"</string>
<string name="package_malware_install">Install anyway</string>
<string name="package_malware_keep">Keep anyway</string>
<string name="package_malware_uninstall">Uninstall</string>

<string name="verify_app_removed_notification_title">Uninstalled %1$s</string>
<string name="verify_app_removed_notification_message">"This app isn't safe. Touch for details."</string>
<string name="verify_app_remove_request_notification_title">You should uninstall %1$s</string>
<string name="verify_app_remove_request_notification_message">This app may be harmful. Touch for details.</string>

Tweaked styles

Add buttons are now blue, the names are bold, and there's a white border around the profile image:

For those of you with multiple accounts, the account selector looks a bit different now and no longer makes all the nav items disappear:

Tapping My Apps while already in My Apps no longer refreshes

Tapping My Apps no longer refreshes the list of apps if you're already in My Apps. This was a useful way to see if there are any updates since the last refresh but now to refresh you need to go to another menu item first and then come back.

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

Note: Version 4.6.17 is floating around as well, but it is exactly the same as 4.6.16. Literally the only difference is the version number. We have no idea why Google decided to release it, but you're not gaining anything by using 4.6.16.

File name: com.android.vending-4.6.16.apk

Also noticed Google Play music recently moved the setting menu into the same place.

    • miri

As of this, Play Movies & Tv is actually the only suitable Google app that hasn't moved settings, etc. to the nav drawer.

  • Michael Romano

I used to have this button on my Play Store app (Nexus 7) but not anymore. When did they get rid of it?

    • Raloc

They got rid of it when they added the navigation drawer

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

They're cleaning up. I was sad to see it go too. :(

      • http://seancois.me/ Sebastian C.

I agree. That was a handy shortcut!

      • turdbogls

same here, but it annoyed me that the phone didn't have it. glad they eventually made it consistent from device to device with the slide out drawer.

    • mimo09

swip on the right side of the google play store , u will see it !

  • Spasillium

Seems like some of you have missed the "Developing" text near the bottom there, if you had actually read the article...

  • Zargh

Sigh, they still didn't fix losing your position in the reviews when you hit back after clicking on a profile picture circle to view a reviewers app page. The new styling makes them much more tempting to click too.

  • parkerjh

I never understood which clown at Google came up with the wording, "Auto-add Widgets". It's almost like they didn't know the difference between a widget and an app icon?

    • Trysta

Seriously! I remember being so confused when this feature was added and having to search online to figure out how to turn it off. Not exactly user friendly...

    • Zargh

The likely reasoning is that in Stock Android/Nexus, Shortcuts were merged with Widgets in ICS and just show up in the widget drawer as 1x1 widgets. The only way to even tell they're shortcuts is that they have an extra background mask derived from the icon. So calling them widgets makes complete sense in Stock Android/Nexus/Google Play edition devices since "widget" just means "thing on the homescreen".

The problem is that other OEMs (hence the majority of the market since Nexus is the minority) continued to call them shortcuts and distinguish them in their skins.

      • Netwern

Nope, your argument is invalid. An icon is 1x1, a widget is more than 1x1.

        • LilJordan

what? you just proved his argument, idiot -.-, he said "show up in the widget drawer as 1x1 widgets" in other words hes saying an icon is just a 1x1 widget...

          • Netwern

Nope you're argument is invalid too idiot. 1x1 is icon, more than 1x1 is consider widget.

    • Matthew Fry

The real clown is the one that set it to default to on. If I forget to turn it off when I get a new device or ROM I've got like 100 icons.

      • Netwern

Nope, the real clown is the one that set mobile data on by default and when you sign in your Google account it restore apps and eats up all your data quota.

        • Down With Blizz

Nope, the clown is the person who programmed in the option to not automatically download, but then programmed the rest of the app to ignore that option entirely. You dick.

          • Netwern

Nope, your mom is a clown and you should fuck her everyday. Dumb ass.

          • Anniyan

you netwern, you're an ass. Retard son of a bitch. Plushophillic bastard.

          • Netwern

You are a son of a prostitute, your mom is a workaholic prostitute that sells her smelly pussy.

  • Chris

Is this the length I have to go to for Google to add functionality to save options in Maps for "Avoid routes with tolls?" Holy crap... How do I swing this to start my own "class action lawsuit?"

    • Thomas Phillips

I seriously can't comprehend why they removed that option setting and now mandate that you set it each and every time you start a navigation. Its infuriating every time they try and route me to a toll road instead of taking one of the hundred other routes.

  • bimsebasse

"Add buttons are now blue, and the names are bold"

Doesn't look like an improvement to me, it was more elegant before. There you go.

    • http://twitter.com/anishbhalerao Anish Bhalerao

Now if you look closely (I mean, really closely else you will miss it..!), Artem has talked about a TWEAKED style. Nowhere is an IMPROVEMENT mentioned.

So you, sir, can suck it.

      • Kaemo

Why are you behaving like an idiot? He was just expressing his opinion, and not criticizing the article.

        • http://twitter.com/anishbhalerao Anish Bhalerao

If you QUOTE something from the article, it is usually in the context to HIGHLIGHT something that is (not) agreeable. Here, he quotes from the OP, and goes on to talk about IMPROVEMENTS.

So either, he is being a dick (which I think he is!), OR this is a very weird way of "expressing opinion".

      • bimsebasse

If that whole post was a joke post, and not actually a weirdly aggressive misunderstanding of my post, then you, sir, amuse me! Nicely done.

      • Kalmish

He always behaves like this as evident from his posts. An eccentric idiot. Gets aggressive for no reason.

  • Hayden Lueck

Was there always an animation when you click the x to remove an app from the "ALL" tab under "My apps"?

    • Imparus

nope you used to just get thrown to the top.

  • AudioAw2015

You can also select a bunch of apps from the my apps list and batch install which is convenient, but they took out the option to batch delete which doesn't make sense...

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

That doesn't make sense. First of all how can you batch install apps from My Apps if they're already installed since they're in My Apps?

Second, you can still batch delete in All Apps, just need to select apps that aren't installed.

      • AudioAw2015

When I hold to select an app not installed, I get an install button on the top right which used to be an x for removing the app. I can select a bunch and batch install them.

        • Shawn Cheever

That's cool. I never knew you could do that. Certainly makes daily ROM flashing even easier.

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

            That's new, actually.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Ohhh, so that part *is* new. Now you can't batch remove from All Apps anymore, but you can mass install instead. Great catch!

You confused me with "my apps list" in the beginning - it should have referred to the All Apps tab.

          • Gaurav Arora

How do we remove them from the 'All' list now, any clue?

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

            One by one.

      Whoops, yes, thanks.

  • infogulch

    So... when is the teardown?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Already did it, there's nothing else hidden, it seems.

"IAPs now included in the App permissions screen" ... Now this, I am excited to read about. I don't mind IAP within certain apps, that I am 'expecting' to have them in, but it's a bit of a bother when apps claim to be free where developers fail to specifically clarify: ad-free, cost-free, or otherwise.

  • http://fakesleep.net/ Jeremy Smith

When you select multiple apps under the "my apps" section, instead of an X to delete it's been replaced with an " install" button.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

In the All section, yeah. Just updated with this info.

★★★ ★★★ ★★★ ★★★ ★★★They are fucking missing these big ticket items for so long. It's like Play Store effort is running off someone's 20% time.

    • Nick

In 4.5.10, you can select them like this, but instead of install, you had the X at the top to delete from the list. But now that the install is there, anyway to mass delete?

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

        Don't think so.

        • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

Users need mass-install only when they get a new device. But mass-remove (from All-Apps list) every few weeks, after accumulating useless apps by trying them out. IMO, Google took away a useful feature and substituted that with something very less useful. :(

          • deveeto

Along with reviving the purchased apps list, it's like Google wants you to forget what you bought from the Store.

          • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

Google: This is why we can't have nice things.
            Users: Why...?
Google: Errr... because I said so. I know what's better.

          • makapav

Sounds a lot like that last guy I ran from...

          • Dan Baxter

That sounds like Apple's answer to most things.

          • Down With Blizz

One other thing i noticed with 4.6.17 was that AFTER cancelling the 50 auto-updates i told it not to download in the first place, it then goes on to download a bunch of Telstra apps, and one or two other apps i had in the past gotten rid of as useless and naggy. My nexus has NEVER had a telstra sim in it, it was directly bought from google play store, and there are no telstra apps listed in 'myapps' - Something, somewhere, is taking your play store email, and adding it to a SECONDARY auto-install list with hidden apps you dont see until theyre suddenly downloading on their own.
Ive had various droids since my LG GT540 5 years ago, and im quickly becoming pissed off with the 'Its not an issue with android, youre just an idiot who cant handle a smartphone, go buy an iphone' attitude of BOTH google themselves, and hardcore fanboys (not your regular run of the mill people, im talking about people who get into screaming matches as to whether HTC or Samsung is better and forgetting the OS itself is fucked.

          • makapav

Android team users of Android phones are clearly don't use anything beyond the stock apps. They are fucking missing these big ticket items for so long. It's like Play Store effort is running off someone's 20% time.

          • ashclepdia

Well but of COURSE they would do that.... Hopefully they are planning to bring in a purchased section(bring it BACK actually....) Ugh....

          • fzammetti

Couldn't agree more! My wife and two kids share my account so we only have to purchase apps once but that means when my daughter tries 50 different One Direction apps a day or my son tries 50 different Slipnote wallpapers a day I can no longer quickly remove that garbage to have a clean list. That S*U*C*K*S.

          • MIDGE LIGHTLY

Hi Bikram, re Remove from All Apps.
is this now why when I tap the X attached to the uninstalled app, all I get in top right corner of screen is 'Install' and not 'remove' as it was before 4.6.17?????. So do removed apps sit there forever???

        • krudl3rx

At least the list won't jump to the top after each delete now, making the change somewhat less sucky. Still probably have to "ok" each one, but not horrible, right?

      • taz89

Prefer mass delete, use it much more. would be even better if both a delete and install button was there.

      • Netwern

Actually it is not "delete". By delete I think you mean uninstall. It was just "remove" the installed app from the installed list. But it would be useful if Google make something like select multiple to delete/uninstall apps in Settings -> Apps. We can no need to depend on third party app to do this action.

Now if only Google would grow up and stop the staged rollouts nonsense. Thank God for AP.

Loving the fact that AP is using zippy share mirrors now. 👍

They're pretty no-BS, similar to Mediafire.

      • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

I think you have AdBlocker installed. Without them, even these have shitload of ads and confusing "Download" buttons everywhere. I like ZippyShare because it gives the highest download speed among the free file hosts ATM.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, they have some ads, but none of them have ever started downloading apks or redirected me to some game or another site. D-h.st started doing it, so we dropped them, for example. On the contrary, when the same happened to androidfilehost, they worked night and day to figure it out and fixed it.

Not sure what you mean. It's been a card UI for a long time now.

      • sam

Artem, I do not know but it seems to me that the color of date and downloads on apps' pages is darker or it is in a bolder font

PS: Google, if you are reading this, PLEASE ADD BACKGROUND PLAY ability to YouTube, and I shall forever be your slave.

    • Harsha

I'm using SuperTube app now instead of YouTube. The advantages are:
      1. You can choose what quality of video you want.. 240, 320, 480, 720
      2. Has options to auro rotate or permanently landscape or portrait
      3. The video can pop out to home screen or on top of any app
      4. You can watch the videos which are shot vertically in full screen (ie make full screen when in portrait mode)
      5. Has mx player kind gestures for volume and brightness control
      6. The most useful feature of all - you can play videos in background.. Also allow the video to buffer in background and switch over to any other app mean time.

      1. The UI is not that great. But it has improved by updates.
      2. The comments section is not as attractive as YouTube and maybe missing few features
      3. Sometimes the app logs out of your account. You need to manually re login which is just a tap.
      4. I think the number if you tube videos I have watched does not reflect in google account activity report. Maybe because of point 3 above.
      5. There are possible ads. There is a pro version to remove them.

The advantages are more and makes you want to ignore the disadvantages. Link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrzheng.supertubeplayer

      • Gaurav Arora

Thanks Harsha! Installing right now :D

      • Fatty Bunter

Probably because it'll get removed from the Play Store if it gets too much press

      • Netwern

Let's be honest here, SuperTube sucks monkey balls. Just look at the ugly interface and the laggy scrolling exprience. It's like an app built for Gingerbread era.

    • Ezzy

I think this might be a copyright etc. issue. It's really irritating though that you can't do this. Or play videos without notifications pausing the video.

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Mass delete was more useful that mass install :/

Also I'm still hoping for All Apps sorting options in the future

The white Google circle has been replaced by a magnifying glass when I updated to the latest version of Google play on my nexus 7.

    • abobobilly

I liked the older "Google" sign better. So basically google is removing "what we like" and is replacing stuff with "what they like". WTF is wrong with them :S

      • xnadax

Are you saying that "what YOU like" equals "what WE like"? You are not the spokesperson for humanity, you know. :)

        • abobobilly

I like the minimalistic approach, but considering that option opens up GOOGLE NOW, which doesn't just do (only) SEARCH ... i think that is an absurd change.

      • Gabernasher

        It's their OS?

        • abobobilly

Good Point. But then by your definition, "Users" shouldn't have any say in this because they are not the "owner". Its not "Apple" we are discussing who makes ALL their decisions for their users, without taking into account what users want, regardless of how useful or crucial a specific feature might be.

I have been dying for an update to Google Hangouts which would IMPROVE its frigging Side Bar, disabling or atleast improving its Slide to Remove feature, but its like, never gonna happen.

Google still assumes everyone using Android is ALWAYS connected to Internet, which is why we don't have proper Offline Maps (no offline search available with cached data).

If you are Okay with the updates coming in, GOOD FOR YOU. I don't like every change, especially when MORE USEFUL items are replaced with LESS USEFUL ones.

          • Gabernasher

So they shouldn't change anything until they conduct a mass vote on everything? You do realize that the play store is a proprietary app do you not? This has nothing to do with Android, it's just the Google Play Store which distributes apps that work on the OS. I guess they should revert it back to 1.0 because change = bad.

          • abobobilly

Dude! I am talking about that Icon Change to access google now(swipe up gesture from home button) which they have changed to a simple magnifying glass. I love the Play Store changes, don't know where you got that from. (I even posted that "clarkson style" Yes to show my likeness about it) :S

Anyway, i am all up for the change, really. But if they really do change something, i expected them to atleast "TELL US WHY" they have done that. Like the last time an engineer explained why they changed the status bar icons color to white in Kit Kat.

          • Gabernasher

No idea what you're talking about, I still see the Google logo...

          • abobobilly

If you look at the top post of this hierarchy, made by garyniger69 ... he posted the following picture: http://a.disquscdn.com/uploads/mediaembed/images/891/963/original.jpg?w=600&h

Please make this a habbit to always check "all" the posts in a reply hierarchy before assuming something, kindly :)

          • Gabernasher

Not sure what that has to do with the play update, but sure.

    • Erik Tomlinson

For what it's worth, my Nexus 5 still shows the Google icon here after installing this update and rebooting the phone.

    • Jesse

It usually shows that when you have another app that has a search function and google hasn't been set as default.

  • Spasillium

Batch deletion in My Apps was changed too. Before you could select more than one app that isn't installed, and tap the X button to remove your selection. With the 4.6.16 update, you can batch install, but not batch delete.

    • Android Developer

The previous behavior was actually more useful.
      Why did they remove it?
Also, batch installation feature should be for new apps.

  • blueseeker

Another thing I notice is Link Bubble Pro in the screenshots. When is the review coming?

  • altaf

    Thanks for the apk

  • Kuyam

After installing an app, this suddenly appeared at the top.

    • http://mrmcpowned.com mrmcpowned

That was coveted before. It came in a previous Google play update.

      • Williams Alexander Aguilar

Maybe giving the URL would be helpfull?

Maybe not being an ass would be helpful*?

    • http://bayimg.com/JAiBNAAFb Johan Knudsen

Anyone else getting bugged every time they update an app? Google requests some "alternative way to contact me" (i.e. phone number) so that I "will not permanently lose all my apps" if I "forget the Google account password" ... Every time I update an app - and there's no "don't ask again" checkbox!

Sorry Google, you can't have my number! :-P

  • David Gigato

Hey artem, do you play starcraft 2?

  • Erik Tomlinson

"Removing apps from My apps -> All no longer jumps to the top of the list"

    Freaking finally!!!

  • Ezzy

I wonder when Play store mass updating will actually work properly. I have to constantly stop and retry/kill the app to begin the process on almost all my devices. Good god it's annoying. Some apps I can't even re-install (like Magic 2014 on my N7).
Hopefully this will help in some way. It's such a janky and ugly app to be the main app store for billions of phones...

  • steveyos

Google finally adds mass crapp removal, it's great, so great they take it away, and this is why I'm shopping for a windows 8 tablet right now , google I hate you so much

    • steveyos

I downloaded so many apps knowing I could finally remove them easily and now I can't and now I quit, this is what google does all the time

  • imsoupercereal

Re: Always requiring password, " If you have kids, you should probably turn this on now.". LOL and be accountable for you and your kids actions?! No way man! This is MUHRKA!

  • Fraz

Alright so I Installed the latest Play Store. Now everytime I open Play Store it gives me a No Connection error. Any ideas?

  • Doakie

My Note 3 is having issues with this update. Once sideloaded when opening the app I repeatedly get a "Connection timed out" error. Restart phone, no change. Cleared Cache, no change. Cleared Data, no change. Uninstalled Updates, works again. I update other apps, install the GoPro app, all works ok. I reinstall the new Play Store APK and I get the same "Connection timed out" error. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait till the official roll out.

  • RaptorOO7

Pretty nice update, can't wait to get my new GS5 and install it. I hated the fact that everytime I removed an app it would go to the top of the list. Very annoying. As for the new password thing, well glad to see they took some initiative and changed it, to the whiney mom who used a tablet as a babysitter STFU and get over it. Dispute it on your credit card and call it a day. You will get nothing out of the lawsuit, the lawyers will get most of the money and you won't have anything to show for it.

  • RaptorOO7

I wish you could mass delete on the Play store website that would be much easier. There are apps I simply don't want in my list anymore. Even apple has the ability to hide apps from view when you want to.

  • Mystery Man

It says updated but I don't see any new additions to the article?

  • flykid177

  • Karan O

i still want the BATCH UPDATE option cause sometimes i don't see the necessity of updating certain apps . i want this option SO BAAAAAAAAAAD!
is there a xposed mode or some hack for that ?

  • Kurt Schultz

    I have version 4.6.17

    • Mo

mind uploading it and share the link?

  • AndyBeaux

They still haven't fixed the issue, that when you scroll down on the apps (doesn't matter which section) some of them don't load the image thumbnails.... So annoying!

    • jis

I am glad that I am not alone with this annoying problem. But I think that it is probably connected with an old Android version I am using. I have Samsung Galaxy Note II with stock ROM 4.1.2. When I want to re-fetch any missing app icon I just shift the list a little bit up or down to get such an app with missing icon out of visible part of list and then shift the list back and icon is fetched every time. May I ask you what is your Android version?

  • sssgadget

Now you can remove apps from wishlist. Let me explain.

    1) I have 2 google accounts on my phone. I logged into playstore using account#2. I went to play store and added an app to wishlist.
    2) I then logged into playstore using account#1 and bought the said app.
    3) Now I logged into account#2 and checked wishlist screen. You will see a green check icon against the app which means it was installed on your phone bought using account#1
    4) now you want to remove the app from wishlist which you could not previously. Now you can.

Yes it's sounds weird but now removing apps from wishlist work.

  • hiyou

I think you're guys are a bit slow on the news @android police I already have 4.6.17.

  • Simon Belmont

Nice write-up. I JUST got Google Play Store 4.6.17, which I guess was a minor bug fix version over 4.6.16 that was reported here.

I guess my favorite feature is being able to force an install of the newest Google Play Store. Though, I am sure that doesn't circumvent a staged roll out.

  • Stanley Chan

Anyone please up the 4.6.17. Thanks in advance

  • Android Developer

I was sure the batch installation was for when you search for apps to install.
Instead, it exists only on the "all apps" section, of apps you've installed in the past.
Not only that, but the feature to remove multiple items from there is gone, and now you have to remove them one after another.

  • quack

How do you get the official apk? How do you get it before it is available to the rest of the world? Where, what web site do you go to in order to download the official one from google?

  • alireza94

I had this bug with 4.6.16 version of Google Play. But it seems that is fixed in 4.6.17

  • Kostas

Tried to force update through 4.6.16 and it didn't update to .17 . Where are the changes from the newer version?

4.6.16 has no Error Code, DATE_INVALID when we call "GooglePlayServicesUtil.isGooglePlayServicesAvailable()"

And 4.6.17 has it. Maybe they were updated some minor code and resources.

  • Down With Blizz

Do _NOT_ use this version. They have obviously rolled back half of the coding in it back, as we are now back to the ol 'Yeah i see you have selected DO NOT AUTOUPDATE, but here, have 50 downloads anyway' 'I see you stopped the downloads, im sure you didnt mean to, here let me continue downloading in the background'
Seriously, its about time someone rescued Android and took it away from the dropkicks at Google, android is quickly turning into the ridiculously buggy and insecure complete abortion that Google+ is.
