The Android 4.4.2 update is hitting yet another version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, this time on T-Mobile. The update clocks in at 495.74MB and will be the first significant update to T-Mobile's Note 3 since release late last year.

22

T-Mobile has yet to update its official support docs with a changelog or OTA status, but we've already gotten a few tips that the OTA is rolling out. Check the update menu to see if you can manually pull it down, otherwise it shouldn't be too long. In addition to the UI tweaks, the KitKat update should enable Tap and Pay in Google Wallet.

Update: T-Mobile has updated its support docs with some details. The new build is N900TUVUCNB4 and should be rolled out to everyone automatically by April 11th. The update is also available through Kies.

[Thanks, +Jonathan Capellan and +Greg Hockenjos]

  • Brandon

Has anyone downloaded and tested Google wallet to see if tap to pay is available ?

    • Wayne

No it says it's unavailable. How is this even legal for them to block? I think someone needs to start a class action lawsuit.

  • Eddie Hooper

    AT&T. Come on.

  • Stanley Chan

495mb? Geez... So many bloat inside. Look CM 11 200mb only. I hate touchwiz.

    • SSDROiD

Yet again somebody is making a hater comment on an article about Samsung. Tragic.

  • Open1Your1Eyes0

Can anyone confirm the bit about Google Wallet "Tap and Pay" now working?

    • Mathew Colburn

I've seen on tmonews and xda that tap and pay is not there.

    • thekaleb

      Not working on mine.

  • Byock

Tap and Pay says Not Available. :(

    • UniBroW
      • Matthew Fry

Ooooh I like that Sprint got in to twist the knife :-P

      • Jonathan Zelayandia

I joined the discussion. Its ridiculous, sometimes i wish Google did the pushing that Apple did in forcing their features

    • thekaleb

I just got off the phone with T-Mobile and they told me I needed a new simcard.

      • Matthew Fry

Then how is it that I can use Tap & Pay on my Nexus 10 which has no SIM card?

      • Open1Your1Eyes0

They definitely confused that with their officially supported ISIS Wallet which does in fact require you to use a special Sim Card with NFC chip built-in.

        • thekaleb

          I think you're right.

  • Justin Foster

Is tap and pay confirmed yet? A user reported it still broken? Thanks for the post

    • mikeg

besides rooting the phone is there any other way to get the emoji back on hangouts?

  • Sylar

Hopefully it doesn't trash the phone like the rest of the samsung 4.4.2 updates have.

  • Biyobe

Dang at work and won't let me download without WiFi... oh well.. i guess i wait

  • SSDROiD

I am honestly hugely disappointed that U.S. carriers manage to send out updates to Android 4.4.2 KitKat on Samsung Galaxy Note 3 when I am in Norway (where no carrier adds anything) and I am still waiting for it. Sony Xperia and their upcoming flagships are looking better and better every day!

    • Fifth313ment

Don't feel bad... we wait forever too..

    • Matthew Fry

I thought Samsung sent the International updates before the U.S. ones...

  • Suhas Vemuri

No Tap and Pay. Unrooted kitkat. Was actually looking forward. Only regret after leaving sprint.

  • hurrpancakes

Yeah, no Tap & Pay :(

    • Grayson

Do you have NFC turned on? On my Moto X it wasn't available if NFC was turned off in settings.

      • Wazzifer

Tried that. Still no T&P. Huge bummer.

      • thekaleb

        Didn't work for me.

  • REM4606

what's up with the emojis in the hangouts app? The keyboard shows the old blob looks that I loved, but after the update they turn into the old iPhone look once they get typed in...

    • Wazzifer

I feel you dude. There's a solution on XDA but it requires root. Which I don't have. Yet.

    • Fifth313ment

Can you guys post a pic? Hangouts has it own Emoji which are different from the stock Samsung ones.

      • REM4606

With this screen capture you can see that the emoji tray is the Android blob style yet the typed emojis are the old style. This is the same for SMS, MMS, and Hangouts chatting when going through the Hangouts App after the Kitkat update.

        • Fifth313ment

Thanks for the pic. I like the style on the Hangouts emoji better but all my friends have Samsung and no one but me uses the Hangouts app so I kinda like having the older style there as that way I know what I am sending. I have to switch to the old messages app now when I send some emoji as I'm not sure what it will look like when they see it. But I would like it to be more normalized/standardized across the devices rather than different emoji for different phones. I don't know why Samsung just didn't use Google's emoji rather than their own? Also what does it look like on the other end of the hangouts app? Is it the Samsung emoji or the Google ones? Also how do you like the update otherwise? Notice any differences?

          • REM4606

I agree... I'm a fan of the Android blob look, and use the Hangouts as my main messaging app.... the problem with this update is that your emoji tray in hangouts will still be the Android blob look, but once you choose which emoji you want it switches to the old style.... very annoying because you'll be choosing blindly until you memorize what translates into what....

          • Fifth313ment

Yeah that's why before I would go into the messaging app to send to other Samsung users so I know what it would look like on their phones. Also how do you like the new update, did you notice anything different, bugs (I'm hoping this fixes many of the bugs I had)? I'm at 98% download so it's now or never for me, lol! :P

          • REM4606

Nothing yet, but I haven't been able to test a lot either. I've heard that writing to the SD card is broken in this update... but can't confirm this myself.

          • Fifth313ment

Now that you said this I'm afraid to download as I have a few apps that store movies on my SD card.

          • REM4606

Make sure you're willing to part with those apps because the writing function break is targeted at 3rd party apps specifically.

          • Fifth313ment

I mean this is so stupid. Google is becoming a lot like Apple and forcing their customers to use phone with on-screen buttons, no microSD card, and an internal battery, ARG!!!! I have no choice but to update as I can't live with the WiFi calling bugs I have no (incoming calls disconnect at 1:26 seconds and other random garbled calls and drops) screen issues where the screen will become unresponsive and I have to turn off the screen wait a sec and then turn it back on to make it work, GPS bugs and I have friends that have bugs that are nothing like mine. I guess it's worth it if it kills the bugs... I hope. I hit start so there is no turning back now. :(

          • Fifth313ment

Hey bro my Hangouts doesn't have the old emoji at all. It only has the new keyboard and you have to hold the mic icon to get to them.

          • Richard Yarrell

BROKE IS A UNDERSTATEMENT DO NOT UPDATE TO 4.4.2 KITKAT PERIOD

          • squiddy20

Yes, write in all caps basically restating that it's "broke" without explaining how/why. How thoughtful.

  • A Question

Its rolling out now? Can anyone upload it?

    • Wazzifer

      Go to XDA.

    • Fifth313ment

Download it yourself, but it's super slow. Go to settings, general tab, about device, and click software update. Then a prompt will appear and you simply download it. But it's super slow and seems to stop every once in a while for me. It's 495.74MB and I'm at 130MB now though.

  • Fifth313ment

It keeps failing to download for me?! It starts and then I look at the phone 20 mins later and the download icon is gone. When I go back to manual update it starts again from the beginning? And it is downloading slow as crap and I have a 50Mb+ connection! I'm hoping it doesn't screw with my launcher as I use the Google Now Launcher and it works great.

    5th

    • Matthew Fry

Mine appears to be frozen at 31%. Rebooting and trying again.

edit: Scratch that, it just started going again.

      • Fifth313ment

        I made it to 46% now (232MB of 456MB). :) Here's to hoping!

        • Fifth313ment

          76%, so close now! :)

          • Fifth313ment

            Installing now...

      • Matthew Fry

Downloaded the OTA but OTA fails on stock rooted. People on XDA have had success upgrading via Kies 3. Trying now.

        • Matthew Fry

Kies 3 upgrade succeeded. Root lost.

          • Matthew Fry

Rooted using CF-AutoRoot for the International version N9005.

write to extSD is fixed (after rooted) by changing the etc/permissions/platform.xml file as in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50842942&postcount=4

          • Fifth313ment

So root was done on a stock OTA and you were able to keep root? What about S-OFF? In for a penny... in for a pound...

          • Matthew Fry

I lost root after updating via Kies. The boot loader isn't locked so no unlock code required. However, as far as I know there is no way to root 4.4 without tripping the knox bit so mine is now tripped. For what it's worth, there are no accounts of samsung or t-mobile denying warranty support for the bit being tripped.

          • Fifth313ment

Where does it say it's tripped? Does it do anything different because it's tripped? Do you have to trip it to root or install ROMs? Thanks for the help. This is my first Samsung phone as I've always had HTC phones. But I went with Samsung because of the removable battery and microSD and now I lost one of the two, lol. I can't see how this will stand? What is the point of no writing to the SD card? I can't see how this makes anything more secure and it simply infuriates owners?! The new S5 has 16GB and 8GB is used by the system so users will have 8GB for everything! This is like going back to 2010!? WTF?!

          • Matthew Fry

In download mode. If it's tripped, it says 0x1, if it's not, it says 0x0. You do have to trip it to root if you're on KK. You most definitely have to trip it to install ROMs.

Someone on xda said Google's reasoning was to avoid poor performance from slow sd cards. That doesn't explain why they didn't make a way for file managers to write to it though.

So far I'm quite happy with rooted stock KK. I've been running the xposed framework and there's a 'show 3-dot menu' module which didn't work in JB but does work in KK. The menu button was my top annoyance on this coming from the One. Current annoyance is wifi calling. Still doesn't work for me.

          • Fifth313ment

Where do you see that diagnostic screen? Only in safe mode or recovery startup? I wouldn't mind it if it simply doesn't appear in every startup. What doesn't work for you on Wifi calling still? I used to have garbled incoming calls (outgoing worked fine either way) also incoming calls were limited to 1:26? Why the heck that number is beyond me? Now it doesn't do either anymore?! Also no more security popup saying something tried to access system files. OK the operating system that is supposed to be open is limiting to the common denominator like Apple? Need I say more? Samsung has to do something to find away around it as the SD card factor will make the 16GB S5 obsolete in two downloads. But not being able to fix my music ID3 tags or download new music is driving me nuts.

          • Matthew Fry

It's the one labeled KNOX WARRANTY VOID.

  • Kevin N

    AT&T???

  • Fifth313ment

The white icons make it impossible to tell the difference between a missed call and other types of calls. Also the notification bar at the top is now transparent via the Google Now launcher. The newest version of the Now launcher installs fine now on Kit Kat where it would get a parsing error on 4.3. I do notice some lag has been removed and the device seems more responsive. The Google Hangouts app now is missing the default Google emoji and only has the Samsung keyboard ones.

    • Fifth313ment

Third party apps can no longer store to the SD card. This is a joke! My 64 or 128 GB microSD is useless now! I used to store my Xfinity Comcast movies and TV shows to it as did Flixster and Vudu but now it can still read ones I had saved but new ones are saved to the internal memory. This definitely makes me reevaluate Android as a OS. I can't even save music I download or images to the SD card now! The system camera app and ETC can still write to the SD though and I can still movie apps to the SD card? This is really confusing! I can't even search where it's downloading my files to as it won't let me view these files without root, WTF?! So you pay almost $800 for a phone and you can't see whats on it or where your files are going, just great. I figured it would store to internal and I could copy it over... nope can't find the files!

      • Fifth313ment

Some apps which rely on the SD card simply crash like Pocket Bible by Laridian. Flixster and others say they will use the measly 20GB of internal data! So what are S5 owners going to do with less than 8GB of data for EVERYTHING! Two moves and a game or two and they are filled up!

        • Matthew Fry

Ugh. Just realized this after the update. Now I have no choice but to root and trip Knox. There's limited usefulness to a microSD card that's read only.

          • Fifth313ment

Wifi calling works now on incoming calls after 1:26 and no more alien speak also on incoming calls. No lag issues or screen issues yet. Keyboard is darker like the s4 keyboard and the emoji picker has different icons for selecting categorizes. Biggest negative is that I use hangouts as my main messaging app and now I can no longer go into messages to send MMS messages as they won't send on Wifi calling in hangouts. So now I'm stuck as I have to use the default messages app as MMS will not work on wifi calling! Arg! When you have hangout set as the default messaging app then go into messages it says cannot send messages! WTF!?

          • Matthew Fry

I've had issues with both SMS/MMS over wifi calling. SMS and MMS work via default program now. SMS via hangouts works, MMS via hangouts fails.

      • Richard Yarrell

Thank GOD I followed my instincts and TOLD GOOGLE TO FUCK OFF.

        • squiddy20

Please. All you did was turn down an update to KitKat. That's hardly telling Google to "fuck off". Moron.

      • William Blade

I can swap files from internal to SD, I just moved 2gb of music from my internal storage to a new 8GB SD card that will be dedicated for music using File Manager by Rhythm Software.

I also was able to direct a download to the SD card by utorrent

one of the worst mobiles of our generation is Note 3 (samsung) . i am one such customer who is suffering because of this stupid device ! after the software update my device is not at all functioning . shame that samsung is a leading phone brand . my advice is please dont purchase any of the samsung products

    • Richard YarreII

I totally agree! The Note 3 is repulsive. And whose idea was it to put fake leather on electronic devices? It's insane! How can Samsung execs sleep at night knowing how terrible their products are???

  • Richard Yarrell

Anybody who left a STABLE 4.3 JELLYBEAN platform for a UNSTABLE RESTRICTIVE 4.4.2 Kitkat platform at this moment made a MASSIVE MISTAKE.

Kitkat changes the write/read permissions of the sdcard which has been a stable of android since it's inception and customers should've been for warned.

The loss of key third party applications downloaded from the play store or other sources from a full functionality use standpoint ISN'T WORTH 4.4.2 KITKAT.

Google hates sdcard storage and it's clear that they want every android device to be like their dreadfully sad Nexus line. Probably an attempt to limit sales of Galaxy products.

Bottom line I brought a perfect handset in October 2013 straight out the box with 4.3 Jelly Bean and full functionality of its sdcard.

I won't allow that to change for a MINOR UNSTABLE KITKAT 4.4.2 UPDATE. What makes it truly a sad conclusion is GOOGLE is encouraging users to ROOT their handsets which is against carrier policies.

Definitely GOOGLE SUCKS MONKEY BALLS PERIOD.

    • squiddy20

And if it weren't for Google providing Android to OEMs for *free*, your "pimp slapping" Note 3 would "suck monkey balls". Get a life.

      • Richard YarreII

On second thought I think I hate 4.2.2 because of what Samsung has done to Android. They have no idea how to make an intuitive user interface. All they do is clog it with useless features and gimmicks that slow up their cheap plastic devices. Anyone can see that stock Android is the way to go. Nexus 5 all the way!!!

        • squiddy20

Says the guy who, for the past 2 years, has been stating how the almighty Samsung is "pimp slapping" the competition, how "Samsung customers know what's up", how Samsung has the "most features from a multitasking and productivity stand point", and a myriad of other delusional fanboy sayings, all while saying that you "wouldn't touch the Nexus 5 with a 10 foot pole", that Nexus products have "crappy cameras and poor battery life", and a few other completely untrue/unfounded claims.
          Yeah. Okay. I believe you.

          • Richard YarreII

Well now I own a Nexus 5 and I see that it completely blows away the competition. I especially love the fact that it's BETTER THAN ALL SAMSUNG PHONES COMBINED. PERIOD. My Note 3 is total junk compared to the magnificence of Google's latest flagship.

You should read his Android and Me profile. It still reads "been a Evo 4g owner on sprint since June 4th 2010", despite his boasting about getting a new phone every year or so.

        • Automatic Computer

Yeah, and despite him hating on HTC as of late.

I upgraded yesterday at 4 am. What a nightmare. I don't think I've ever upgraded an OS without problems. Keep in mind I don't use my phone for anything except business & I don't use Gmail, Google + or anything. I use Maildroid for email since it syncs seamlessly with Outlook. I use Handcent for my messaging app, etc. I am totally unable to restore any of my settings from my SD Card. Need I say more. Maybe there will be an update to fix this in about a year. I'm using a Note 3 & it worked perfectly until now

    • SHE.

I saved all in online pics from my SD card just to make certain I wouldn't lose pics or anything from the SD card. The only thing u can use from SD card was to import contacts. So I clicked "file" on my computer, right clicked file again to open it again so I can work off 2 pages of the same folder. In one file page I clicked on pictures, in the other open page I clicked on my phone SM-N900T. Then clicked phone and copied all folders to pictures folder. Also clicked on Card just in case I had some pics in Card. My device is set to save all to Phone so must everything for me was under phone. After your phone is updated/rebooted and nothing is on the SD card. Click on pictures from the one page and copy whatever u want from the files listed and past them back into Card or Phone. I labeled mine Card & the other Phone so I could quickly remember which files to place where. There is the backup crap, but I like this manual work better. Just another way to not lose SD card info.. I do not know how to use this new crap nor computer crap well, so I did myself a fix. At least I know I have all my pic folders I need to place back on my phone SD card. Good luck everyone.

  • Lexster

I think there's a bug with the update. I no longer am able to get music control on the lockscreen. The weird thing is that if I'm listening to Slacker, when a song changed, the controls will appear for a split second on the lockscreen and then it'll go back to just displaying the clock and my application shortcuts. Anyone figure how a fix to this?

  • Rico

So now it makes sense..."Once Visa and MasterCard enable HCE support, Google should be able to enable tap-to-pay for consumers who use their cards instead of resorting to inelegant workarounds." It looks like Visa and MasterCard are working on this and Google Wallet Tap-to-pay via KitKat will be enabled once it's ready. I'm guessing Wallet will receive an update when this happens? Do a search for "Visa MasterCard and HCE" to find out more. Looks like it's imminent afterall!

    • Rico

Your card information will be on the cloud with HCE vs. on the secure element. This is why "Only devices using Android 4.4 (KitKat), or higher, will need a network connection once a day to tap and pay", per Google's instructions on how to tap and pay. Again, it looks like Visa and MasterCard are working on enabling the "storage" of the card data in the cloud.

  • Cairene_Again

Update severely shortened my battery life! A background process called Camera Daemon is doing this, alongside 'media server.' This has been acknowledged as a problem by google for the nexus 5, but there are no patches yet. I love the full screen lock screen album covers; all else I replicate with apps and launchers. But the defect is serious enough that I would recommend you hold off on the update till someone fixes it.

  • Rick Lawler

Well I installed the T-Mobile deployment of KitKat on my Galaxy Note 3 but I didn't get the KitKat homepage - just left with the terrible TouchWiz. Had to use a simulated KitKit home page launcher from the Play Store. What gives.

  • JamesTroia

Has anyone had issues the data being turned off, and the only way to fix it is to constantly restart the phone?

  • Reiver Rodriguez

I updated my Note 3, 3 days ago and now i'm having a lot of problems. when I receive a text message, my phone stops working for about 30 seconds!!!! and then comes back to life. Sometimes it does not let me write a message back!!!
GPS was not working right before, it still the same!!!!! NOT WROKING!!!!

Help my emogi dissappeared on hangouts - I am so sad now I cant annoy my fiance with emogi pictures.... is this due to the update??

  • Thang

Help me! I have tried to update Kitkat for my note 3. But there were some mistakes and the keyboard has stopped working. Now i can not unlock my Note. can anyone help me? :((

    • SHE.

Try starting in safe mode. Make sure to turn the phone off. Press and hold the power key on the device. When Samsung logo displays, press and hold the Volume down key until the lock screen displays. Safe mode will show at the lower-left corner of the screen. To undo safe mode just restart device or power off and back on as usual

  • soyab

New update kitkat 4.4.2 in s4 is fucked phone start to restart automatically and switched of automatic even phone hang and heat. B4 my phone was working good.

  • Leon Mardini

Whenever I try to upgrade to KitKat OTA, it reaches 100% which is 357MB in the middle, and then it continues to load more data, & you can see that it has reached 101% in notification page. Completely ridiculous! Tried it 4 times & still didn't work. Let's hope a KIES update will help me upgrade.
