G2-Thumb

A few days ago AT&T pushed Android 4.4.2 to its version of the LG G2, and now it's T-Mobile's turn... sort of. No, an OTA isn't hitting the airwaves just yet, but that doesn't mean T-Mobile G2 owners can't get their hands on the OS update right away. A full 1.5GB ROM has found its way from LG's servers to the XDA forums, and it's open for anyone to get their hands on. You can download it directly here.

A screenshot is provided. As you can see, this is indeed Android 4.4.2. The build number is KOT49I.D80120a.

G2

After downloading the ROM, which comes in the form of a .kdz file, you can upgrade using the LG Mobile Support Tool. If you would prefer to wait, you can take this as a sign that your OTA update isn't too far off.

  • brkshr

Not as huge as the S5s ROM. Didn't they say it was over 8GB?

    • Edan

Over 8GB on actual phone storage, ROM is compressed and probably goes around the 1.5GB

      • brkshr

okay, didn't realize they could be compressed that much

        • natabbotts

Compression ratios on things with patterns in them like code are enormous, the difficulty is with the built in sound and image resources usually :)

  • GreatNews

If I update using this ROM file will it delete my entire phone like a hard reset or it will work just like any OTA update?

    • brkshr

My guess is that it's probably just like an OTA (so no hard reset), but it would be best to ask at the XDA source.

    • enoch861

I just did the update and no. It installed like an OTA.
Just download the LG Mobile Tool and plug your phone in and it'll do the update without any issues.
I did backup my data just in case but nothing was delete. It does need more than 6GB of free storage to update though.

      • GreatNews

        No need 6GB empty storage

  • KKisawesome

I've got it all installed. It will not erase anything what so ever. I actually do see the performance increase and I believe anyone will as well.

    • GreatNews

Does it come with LG's new Knock code? and does Tap to Pay work?

      • enoch861

Tap to Pay does not work according to one XDA member.
I'm in the process of installing it right now and will report back.

        • enoch861

Tap and Pay is not available.

    • newToAndroid

hey kkisawesome, how did you install it ?

    • John Garlits

Cool, but can you still use calling over wifi?

  • Bakster

    Will this work for D802?

    • enoch861

      No.

  • cy_n_ic

Thats a large rom lol. I could download an aosp rom and stream a movie while i install and setup my device and still use less data

    • hp420

Not unless you want a terrible quality, blurry video you can't. Any full length movie of decent video quality is going to be at least 1gb. Most AOSP roms are about 600mb. By my calculations, that's 1.6gb, or 0.1gb larger than this rom.

      • cy_n_ic

182mb Nexus rom and all the rest for the 15 minutes needed to setup and restore settings. You calculate too much...

      • http://twitter.com/anishbhalerao Anish Bhalerao

        AOSP ROMs at 600 MB?
I think cy_n_ic meant "normal" AOSP ROMs. Not bloatware-laden AOSP ROMs.

  • enoch861

After installing the update, it's as if the update breathed new life into the phone.
The phone is freakishly fast right now, its not even funny. I didn't think it was possible to speed up the G2 but this update did it.
So far so good, its AMAZING!
No Tap to Pay though :(

    • John Garlits

I've noticed a bit more stutter over time, which I think has to do with the lack of trim in 4.2. Looking forward to my G2 getting it's original swagger back and then some. I really like immersive mode on my N7 as well. So nice to be able to peek out of games and see notifications or be able to quick toggle sound or something.

Breaking: No need to go with LG Mobile Support Tool and download the file Its now available to update on LG PC Suite!!! I just updated my phone with it and it worked like a charm!!

    • http://www.youtube.com/#/mrjlwilliams J. Williams

I'm about to try it your way...I don't want to go through XDA on this one. Do all of your features work? knock on and off? Wifi, bluetooth, etc.

      • GreatNews

Everything works like before plus its like they say 17% faster by me it sounds much more than 17% and you wibt loose your important data

        • http://www.youtube.com/#/mrjlwilliams J. Williams

          Downloading now...woohoo!!!!!!!!!! Thanks you guys!!

        • John Garlits

          Wifi calling too?

          • GreatNews

            Yes its still here

          • John Garlits

Awesome! Gonna do it this weekend. ;)

      • bootruss

I'm on the international version on three via carphone warehouse, can I download and update my phone with this version?

    • Jamie Kitchens

      Ditto.

    • Tiki

I have tried multiple times through the LG PC Suite but it keeps telling me i have the latest software version....!

      • GreatNews

Or your phone is not connected properly or LG removed it from their server

        • Tiki

I've connected the phone properly so it sucks if they removed it from the server. Will try again this evening & over the weekend!

  • Andres Reyes

Apparently the Verizon update will never come.. :(

  • duke69111

    Lets go Verizon!!!!!

    • o.O

Calm down, calm down. Us Verizon folk will get our update in March as has been reported since December. March of 2017.

      • duke69111

I'm curious who said it will come in March? Neither Verizon or LG has said anything to my knowledge.

        • Justin S

Me too, I tweeted Verizon, when ATT got the update, and they said there was no news to share

  • http://www.youtube.com/#/mrjlwilliams J. Williams

As @TheNewsHQ:disqus said, using the LG PC Suite, is the way to go. It worked like a charm, and it's the official update. Why T-Mobile has not announced it yet, who knows.

    • John Garlits

Can you still do calls over wifi after the update?

      • GreatNews

        Yes

      • http://www.youtube.com/#/mrjlwilliams J. Williams

        Yes. Everything works

  • Jamie Kitchens

I just got upgraded to 4.4.2 by plugging my LG G2 into my computer and running the phone in USB LG software mode. T-mobile.

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

    Wow
    Nexus firmware = ~400MB
    G2 firmware = 1.5GB

How much ducking bloat must one out into a ROM to make it THAT big?

  • dude
  • georges

does my g2 need to be rooted ????

    • GreatNews

No, in fact if you are currently rooted you will lose root

    • enoch861

      No

  • newToAndroid

how do you install it ? I have the KDZ file downloaded and also the LG Support mobile tool but not sure on how to install this KDZ file on the phone. Do I need to root the phone first ?

    • shooter50

      same here, need help

  • Ed Elliott

People be complaining about Samsungs rom sizes, yet nobody complains about LGs...

    • John Garlits

More people have had a Samsung, my guess is. At least the LG rom is more speedy, at least from what I saw comparing with Note3 demos (same processor, Note 3 had even more ram). Will be interesting to see if Sammy improved performance with the S5.

  • Jesse Scott

Does this work with Verizon? When will Verizon's be released?

  • Bobby Boucher

lg added BOX and GPS is now location, i used the TOOL and NOT the "pc suite".
    nothing erased, no backup needed.

also i did chat with LG earlier and they denied haveing a tmobile update, LOL

    • joel

Yea , Ive been trying all night through PC Suite and Mobile tool as a USA Tmobile Customer and there is no update. the 4.2.2. version is says is current version and is up to date, so.......

      • Bobby Boucher

Use the tool and not the suite, it was working Friday. The tool downloads the data for you. They may have closed this way of updating.

  • Junior09

I downloaded it last night and I noticed right away the improvements, only thing that bothers me is the update center, since I have no root access at the moment I can't freeze the stupid app, but it just keeps on saying that I should update a few apps withing update center and they won't update. Also guys, it's a firmware not a rom, rom stands for "read only memory"

  • nick whiteman

Im on ATT got the update and all Benchmarks fall greatly, was getting much better results with 4.2.2. i dont notice anything faster at all. Any ideas? Factory rest wont take me back to 4.2.2. either so know im stock with 4.4.2. how did i lose so much?
