Koush's AllCast app does a good job of streaming media to all manner of set top boxes, and of course the Chromecast. However, it hasn't always looked awesome doing it. Well, now it does – the new update comes with a refreshed UI and adds Muzei support for good measure.

AllCast now has a much improved slide out navigation menu and tabbed browsing of media. The color scheme is nice too. Your Muzei extensions will also show up as sources for content in AllCast. I'm pretty sure there's going to be a toaster with Muzei support soon enough.

Remember, AllCast requires a $4.99 premium license if you want to make real use of it. Also worth noting we're seeing a few errors with the Muzei extensions. The updated version is live in Google Play, but as of this posting the screenshots haven't been updated. We've got a few old screens preserved for posterity below.

He has been showing off cloning the android screen to chromecast on G+. I think he's not happy with the codecs available right now.

    • bungadudu

He said there's already a beta which allows mirroring android to appletv.
Really hope he'll support chromecast on the best future!

      • Cory_S

The Chromecast has some pretty shitty WiFi. Hard to complain, it's 35 bucks. But, I doubt we will ever see it perform close to what Apple TV can do.

  • Beavis

Koush needs to focus on actually making his existing features WORK. Quit adding new stuff and make the other stuff usable.

  • Hobie Helbich

Really I'm just waiting for screen mirroring capability... Koush teased it and now I want it.

    • mustbepbs

      Why? It's really laggy.

      • Hobie Helbich

Just because. I don't have a miracast dongle, and I use my tablet hooked up through an HDMI cord all the time. It would be nice to be able to do my phone too. And hopefully by the time it is actually released, it will but a lot less laggy.

        • mustbepbs

It's got nothing to do with optimization. It's the nature of the beast.

The proposed mirroring is cool but one feature I would really like to see is the ability to link the Chromecast to a share. That way, like the standard apps, the Chromecast is more of a remote control and the Chromecast is going straight to the source for better performance.

AKA using AllCast, but having it more tell a Chromecast app/api to go to \sharevideos for its content. That way its not filling up my tablet. Would finally make my GoogleTV moot (the interface on my TV is horrid and it struggles with big MKVs)

    • Cory_S

Yeah I agree. As much as I want it, I don't think I'd ever use mirroring. The hardware just isn't there to support any kind of seamless experience playing games. Videos would destroy your phones battery, and properly have hit or miss reliability. The only thing I could possibly see myself using it for it to show off a video I took on the phone. But, that'd be rare.

Now, being able to play from a NAS/PC share would be very useful. I think there are actually options out there that can do this already though.

      • archercc

If you have suggestions I am definitely open to hearing them. Its the primary use for my GTV anymore (other than the great Harmony like features) but the Revue is getting long in the tooth and struggles with some functions.

        • Cory_S

Haven't tried any yet. I will be looking into it shortly. I use my PS3 to play transcoded movies off my PC. That's the only reason I still have the thing around and it take sup way too much space for that. Issue is I don't see the Chromecast handling 1080P bluray rips without a LOT of down sampling.

          • Karl Dagenais

Don't dismiss it too quickly. Plex is an amazing media server and does any required transcoding on the fly. Videos look gorgeous on the Chromecast even in 1080p!

        • Skab

I have been testing with using plex media server install on my pc then fire up bubbleupnp on my phone works great

"The proposed mirroring is cool but one feature I would really like to see is the ability to link the Chromecast to a share"

Abso-freaking-lutely. I only have Allcast installed in the hope that functionality is added eventually. I can do that with Avia and such but I'd prefer to use something as clean/stripped down as Allcast.

      • archercc

Avia will let you use the phone to manage the chromecast pulling video from shares? Support MKVs? Require first born?

Glad to see that Koush is continuing to improve Allcast

I have chromecast streaming issues with this app. Pictures take forever to load on the TV screen and videos either never load or buffer constantly from the second they begin. I ahve the free version, but would be more than willing to pay $5 if i could stream my local pix/vids to the TV. Anyone else have these issues? I have a Moto X with 4.4.2 and an excellent wifi signal. I also use a Nexus 7 and that does the same. I stream netflix and music using chromecast every day of my life without a single buffer. Thanks!

    • Beavis

Everyone has these issues. It's because he wants to include as many features as possible to get people to buy the app, but doesn't refine them or give them the attention to work consistently.

      • NoneOfYourBizzness

Ugh, that's a shame. I was looking forward to this. Hopefully it will be refined.

Why is it that everytime he updates his app, it can't see ANY of my Chromecasts for the next few days, and yet - Netflix, Avia, Dayframe etc continue to work just fine :(

  • Steve B

Are you guys able to stream stuff from Drive and Dropbox? I thought this was a feature but they never show up within the app.

    • Pratik Holla

Its not seamless. What you need to do is go into dropbox or gphotos and click the share button. From there you would select allCast. Only then will it pick it up. Also, you cant swipe to the next image. You need to redo the same process.

  • ddpacino

What's the purpose of Muzei support..?

  • gspida

I find that the Local Cast Media 2 Chromecast app by developer Stefan Piedl is much more stable. It's free and it also shows the file names instead of just an image. Competition is good :)
