GalaxyS4Mini-Thumb

The Galaxy S4 Mini and Mega may typically take a backseat to the Galaxy S4, but today is their turn to bask in the limelight. Sprint is now rolling out OTA updates to both devices enabling Galaxy Gear support along with WiFi calling. The former is already available for the Galaxy S4, but the latter functionality is brand spanking new. This update is rolling out right on schedule.

The Galaxy S4 Mini's update is version JDQ39.L520VPUANA7. Galaxy Gear support and WiFi calling are joined by Samsung KNOX and a few bug fixes.

MiniChangelog

The Galaxy Mega's update, version L600VPUANA7, only comes with the two headlining features.

MegaChangelog

The update is going out in stages and may take several days to show up on your device. Hang tight.

Born and raised in the rural South, Bertel knows what it's like to live without 4G LTE - or 3G, for that matter. The only things he likes sweeter than his tea are his gadgets, and while few objects burn more than a metal phone on a summer day, he prefers them that way anyway.

Here are the fun parts /s:

    1. You need signal in order to use Wifi Calling. Yes, really. You need Sprint service (at least one bar) before it'll authenticate and work. Not as seamless as T-Mobile's "just connect to any password-protected network anywhere in the world." So no, you can't use Sprint's overseas like you can T-Mobile's.

    2. You need to register every. single. Wifi. network. you intend to use Wifi Calling on, through your Sprint account.

    3. Everyone one of those Wifi Networks must have a 911-accessible address tied to them.

And in case anyone has any doubts about #1, which is basically the deal-breaker, straight from Sprint: http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/nexusae0_wm_4.jpg

Leaving Sprint last week for Tmobile was the best thing I did. Took all 5 of my lines and everyone in the family is mad at me for not making the move sooner.

Did the same back in October! Also with 5 phones and it's amazing! T-mobile is friggin fast and reliable! I get LTE everywhere and in some places where signal penetration isn't quite as good I get HSPDA+, which is just as good! Sprint 1MB down and up at best! T-Mobile is 5-30Mb down and 1-2-Mb up! Also free hotspot and WiFi calling were the main sticking points for me!

Sprint should allow this feature to all users who have smartphone of any model or make? this discrimination is not right.... http://www.telecomvibe.com

Well, this is a stupid idea for people who travel abroad. This only works in Sprint CDMA service areas. T-Mobile works everywhere as long as you have wifi.

Anyone aware of a working root for this new build [JDQ39.L520VPUANA7]? Looks like the exploit for Kingo/saferoot no longer works.
