KitKat-Thumb

Samsung has been very cautious in rolling out its KitKat update thus far, with even most Galaxy S4 owners still waiting around on Jelly Bean. This doesn't even take into account all the millions of other Galaxy smartphones and tablets that often take a backseat to the company's flagship. Yet Samsung has now provided a list of all the devices it intends to bump up to Android 4.4.2 before it's all said and done.

  • Galaxy Note3
  • Galaxy NoteII
  • Galaxy S4
  • Galaxy S4 mini
  • Galaxy S4 Active
  • Galaxy S4 zoom
  • Galaxy S III
  • Galaxy S III mini
  • Galaxy Mega
  • Galaxy Light
  • Galaxy Note 8.0
  • Galaxy Tab 3
  • Galaxy Note 10.1
  • Galaxy Note10.1 2014 Edition

The company expresses that updates will start today and continue on throughout the coming months, not proving any information on which devices will get priority. As usual, ETAs will also vary based on carrier. So yes, you will still need to be patient, but at least now you know if you've made the list. And no, bringing along a hot friend won't get you in any sooner.

Wonder if the Galaxy S3 will mysteriously disappear from the list just like how they did it with the Galaxy S2 back in the day...

    • ProductFRED

Nah, I don't think even Samsung has the balls to screw over S3 owners. The sales numbers for the S3 support a KitKat update.

      • http://www.youtube.com/crisr82 Kristian Ivanov

I hope you're right, but do remember - the S2 was the best selling phone for it's time too, and kept selling after the S3 was out just like the S3 is now...while I'm still with my old i9100, I hope the S3 users are luckier than I was.

        • AbbyZFresh

The Galaxy S2 to S3 was a huge jump in performance and changes compared to the S3 to S4 transition. That means there's still a lot of S3 users who still don't feel the need to upgrade and those still on 2-year contracts that can use some kitkat.

          • http://www.anivision.org/ Christopher Bailey (Xcom923)

it's the reason I don't have an s4. this is the first time I have not felt the need for a new phone. Although whenever I do make the jump I think I'll move to the note line.

          • Alex

I think that all the US GS3s have 2GB storage? I wonder if the 1GB i9300 (international) model will get an update. Are all the US GS3s Qualcomm as well, unlike the i9300?

          • wampdog29

When you say "storage" do you mean memory/RAM? Storage would be 16GBs. But yes, the US GS3s have 2GBs of RAM because we got a dual-core Qualcomm instead of the Quad-core Exynos everyone else got due to LTE compatibility issues.

          • Alex

Yes, sorry, I meant RAM. My brain must have been on leave when I wrote that. Thanks for the reply, so it does still leave some doubt as to whether they'll update the international devices, despite Kitkat potentially still working well with less memory.

          • Matthew Fry

Honestly, I don't think the jump from the S3 to the S5 is going to be a huge jump. Everyone is just defaulting to putting the 800 processors in. It's making it very hard to have any motivation to upgrade my device.

        • DarrenR

Honestly I'd say the s2 only continued to sell because people are cheap and didn't know any better.

          • My name is….

That is the most stupid thing i heard in a while

          • DarrenR

Care to support your argument or do you want to just leave it at childish name calling?

          • My name is….

            I don't need to

          • Sean Royce

            I agree.

          • DarrenR

Are you agreeing with me or with "My name is"?

      • Gerard

Supporting owners of previous devices with updates reduces the chances of their successors, if 'patient users' are driven to cheaper older flagships instead of the latest. Already happened with the S4, whose sales got cannibalized by the S3s in circulation (those stay on the market until broken, abandoned or destroyed).

    • PamMJJ

      Oh Lord! I hope not!!

    • almousawi

      Annnnnnd you were right

      • http://www.youtube.com/crisr82 Kristian Ivanov

It's my job to be right about these things ^_^
(I'm not happy about it though :c )

  • yahyoh

    Long life Note 2 ♥♥

    • Wezi427

I'm hoping that it gets another update beyond this version of KitKat, but I think that's wishful thinking.

  • Chris Oh

Google Wallet, pretty please? On my Note 3?

    • Marriop

I have Google wallet on my Sprint GN3 ? Just get it from the play store.

      • Chris Oh

with tap to pay via NFC?

        • Marriop

          Yep!

          • Chris Oh

ok sir, is that on stock rom or custom rom rooted?

          • Marriop

I am on the stock Sprint ROM Android Jellybean 4.3

          • Chris Oh

Must be a Sprint thing :)

          • Tony Tien

Pretty sure Sprint supports Google Wallet out of the box on their phones. I remember they did on the S III.

  • frafri

    sprint galaxy s4 ??
    any updates???

    • silver_arrow

      4.4 is already rolling out.

  • mustbepbs

I hope they update the Note 8 sooner rather than later. If they're not going to refresh it, that is.

  • Sruly J

Did Samsung actually announce which devices are getting Kit Kat?! Pinch me,i must be dreaming. Now, if only they would all be released soon. With all these devices, Android Distribution numbers should hopefully jump a lot in Kit Kats favor.

    • Cody Shiranai

You should worry more about your CARRIER getting it to you in a timely matter, doesn't matter if Samsung was ready months ago (see also: Everyone but Verizon getting their Jelly Bean updates on Galaxy phones rather quickly).

      • Sruly J

Sprint has been ok with the updates (compared to the other carriers).
At least everyone I know (including me) with GS3 on Sprint had no issues with 4.3, so what they lack in coverage, they've been decent with updates

  • supremekizzle

Ha. I wouldn't put much faith in this happening in a timely matter. I mean, come on! Biggest fucking android OEM on the planet and they suck at keeping their own software up to date. Cut back on that advertising budget assholes and hire a Dev team that can update in a timely matter.

    • Sean Royce

You're a complete idiot. Their update speeds are fine. It's the carriers that hold them back.

      • Scott

Motorola would like a word with you.

        • faceless128

i'm sure many owners of many previous Motorola flagship mobile android handsets would like a word with them.

          • Scott

I'm not talking about just the updates... I'm talking bout how Sean Royce claimed that it was the carriers holding back the updates.

        • hot_spare

Exactly the reason why they can't sell a damn phone! When you sell phones in thousands (as compared to millions for Samsung), it's obviously easy to update.
Not to forget, countless droids over the past years not getting anything..

      • Marcel Ulbrich

If that was true, consider this:
        - European devices don't receive updates through carriers but directly from Samsung and also don't get the updates any faster.
        - Tablets without 3G / 4G don't get carrier updates either, any fast updates there?
        - The Galaxy Tab 3 (7.0 specifically) was released in July 2013 and shipped with 4.1.2, which came out 1 year earlier, while 4.3 was available already. I don't think a carrier is holding back updates before a device is even shipped.

Do you honestly believe, Samsung has had KitKat roms ready for every device since November and it is the evil American carriers that hold back the updates for everybody worldwide?
Samsung causes these delays by having 200 different models and overloading Touchwiz with crap that need extensive testing, because it is so far away from stock Android.

        • sguyx

          exactly.
My Note 10.1 (european version) has been without an upgrade since january 2013 when it got 4.1. I sure expect to get upgrades when buying an android device and surely when having a premium product. But what happened? no 4.2, no 4.3. now we are hoping to see 4.4 or atleast something. They even made Note serie incompatible together. Do we blame carriers again?

Well i give a shit for carriers, we dont play their game here. Only one is to blame is Samsung and its millions differend kind of models, variants and new toys on every fking week. It is ridiculous! They need to have every inches, every single cpus gpus rams pix etc. It is like a toy factory mixing components together and putting it on the market on everytime they discover a new mixture.

Am I going to buy another Samsung product again? Owning their premium priced product Note 10.1 and all you got was that they totally forgot us. When other companies started to update their old devices, Samsung had to do something - or why do you think we got this list so suddenly without any pre-news? At first it came out in usa, then a day after in europe.. I bet, without others (htc, lg, sony) we would be still without any news of possible updates - even samsung nordic didnt know anything about updates day before yesterday. Their facebook wall is full of writings what happens around the world and Samsung Nordic is totally in the dark. So yes, I even wonder do we get and when we get upgrades. They say that upgrades are already rolling out - but who really has got it? I bet Samsung had to do something and they just pulled the list of "old" devices (like others did) trying to prevent their customers leaving.

So we really need to thank Sony, HTC and LG forcing Samsung to do something than a new toy again. Thank you Sony! Thank you HTC! Thank you LG!

      • Rudy Ballesteros

What are you talking about. It takes them forever to update their tablets. That have no carriers.

    • epicmau5time

Now let's examine this from a business standpoint.

      Marketing = money
      Many devices = money
Large team to update these devices = loss

So what will they do? Stop making so much devices and lose money? No.

Samsung could easily get a staff of 100+ workers to get all these updates out within a week. But then what? 100+ workers with no other function is a liability. What you should however see is the fact that these phones are even getting an update to kitkat. Something that no other oem is doing.

Motorola has 5 phones to update, all released in 2013, HTC has 3 phones they will update released in 2013, Sony is a similar story.

Samsung is doing this with 14 devices released between 2012 and 2013, even middle class devices are getting updates. When another OEM can do this get back to me.

      • sguyx

And what about chip/driver makers and their support - how does it affect others to be able to upgrade their devices versus Samsung? Samsung makes its own chips (exynos) and Samsung is not depending on others. Have Samsung done something better with its own exynos chip -devices? I think it is totally opposite way..

        • epicmau5time

Fair enough but how many Sammy devices use an exynos?

          • sguyx

For example Galaxy Note 10.1 3G N8000 which has been over a year without upgrades and still has Android 4.1.2.

  • Lackmann

    "Galaxy Tab 3", any size?

    • faceless128

      safe to assume!

    • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Pretty sure it's only about 8.0

    • Mihai

I would assume that Tab 3 7.0 atleast, will be skipped since it's on 4.1.2. Thanks Samsung!

  • Matt

I'm so happy my Note 2 will live to see KitKat :')

  • Transverse45h

so rest of the 200 devices abandoned

    • faceless128

      as expected.

    • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

      surprised?

  • http://coinoperatedbear.deviantart.com/ CoinOperatedBear

My Note 8 still has 4.1.2, I asked their customer service about any sort of update and they gave me no answer, of fucking course.

    • sguyx

      Have you tried Kies?

  • Tuấn Ankh

Slight hope for my Galaxy Mega.
    My at&t Galaxy Mega..... -_-

  • tB

Everyone is so excited, but 4.4.2 is supposed to be the death of full Sdcard support. I'm still running 4.1.2 because my phone does everything i need/want it to, including letting me have expandable storage! I'm gonna sit back and watch how this plays out before I upgrade anything, just like i did with 4.3 & all its woes before deciding to skip it.

    • Matthew Fry

There will be fallout from the SD card issue. We don't know how the pieces are going to fall. Let's just hope they fall in our favor for once.

    • Cory Ducey

It's not as bad as people made it out to be. The restrictions are minor. It just reserves a folder for that app. Easier for deletion is one if the reasons cited.

  • JEngland

    No GS2 Skyrocket love?

    • http://www.youtube.com/crisr82 Kristian Ivanov

Forget about the S2 line, they already said it's off the list like...6 months ago (or so)

    • michael interbartolo

guess I will have to update it with CM once again though not sure my 3 yr old who uses it now as a mini tablet is really jonesing for kit kat on the Skyrocket.

  • DarrenR

OmniROM > waiting for Samsung an AT&T to push updates.

    • Sir_Brizz

I'm loving OmniROM. Just wish they had a less buggy d2att build.

      • DarrenR

I'm doing pretty good on my AT&T note 2. Except for the headphone issues and sometimes I have wake lock problems but other than that the ROM works really nicely for me.

  • Nick

I waited so long for 4.3 on the S3 and they fucked it up so hard that I moved to cyanogenmod! Best thing I could do. So I expect the same thing here.. When android 5.X is realeased, the kitkat update will come to S3 and I have then cyanogenmod with Android 5.X running. Just fuck you Samsung!

  • Cody Shiranai

If this list is supposed to be in some order of importance or relevance to Samsung, I find it funny that the Note 3 would be in higher priority than the FLAGSHIP S4 or maybe it is because the S4 is already almost a year old and will be replaced by the S5 that will surely have Kit-Kat out of the box, thus the current flagship will have 4.4 before the Note 3 does and before the Note 4 is even announced.

    • Jaime

The Note 3 is also a flagship and the Note family is always more powerful than the S family.

    • Cory Ducey

The Note 3 is the big dog in the house. Plus the fact is the more expensive and powerful of the 2.

  • JazzEspresso

    Note 8.0 fucking about time!!!!

  • frafri

whats new in kit kat for the galaxy s4 anyways??

  • Leonardo Baez

I'm in mexico and S3 still didnt get 4.3 update....

    • Jaime

Eso es por telcel. No tengas miedo y actualizalo tú mismo.

    Galaxy Tab 3?
    7" ?
    From 4.1 to 4.4 :D

  • Mike23

Note 10.1 (Old Model) YESSSS KITKAT :)

    • day

      How?

      • Cory Ducey

OTA or Kies, but most likely OTA

        • Luis Romero

Can you please be a bit more precise with your response? I want to believe that there is an update but having just contacted Samsung customer support and getting told that the only version right now is 4.1.2 then I a more than skeptical.

          • DaBruinz

So far, some EU countries are getting it. Not sure when it will get to NA, but it seems they are rolling it out either very cautiously, or flippin' slow...

  • Leandro

    S3 mini?
Doesn't this phone have a NovaThor chip?

    • knizmi

Not the US AT&T version, it uses a Snapdragon.
Funny thing is that many European servers have copied this article telling European users that KitKat is coming for their S3 Mini.
Unless Samsung has the source code for the SoC drivers and is willing to spend many and may man-hours on updating it (highly unlikely), official KK for S3 Mini is not possible.

  • jeff

I hope that they remove the carrier splash screen on the Verizon S4 KitKat update....here's to wishing.

    • sguyx

How about rooting it after the update and removing all the crap?

  • eirrom

Can I expect my VERIZON Galaxy Note II to get another update or is that just wishful thinking?
I'm sure the international version will but for some reason I don't see my carrier-locked version getting KitKat. By the time this happens, the Galaxy Note IV should be out.

    • flosserelli

If KK does come to VZW Note 2, you can be confident it won't happen for some time after all other carriers push their updates.

  • thas ★

They haven't killed off the original Note 10.1?! It's still on 4.1.2. I'll believe this when I see the update.

  • Dave

What about the Galaxy Tab 3 T-210 7.0 Wifi version will that get the update as well?

  • john

My question is what will the update obtain? I didn't see much when it went from 4.1.2 to 4.3 And that's a big leap. Now With this little update coming what will "wow" us if it didn't with the 4.3? It's getting pretty boring with the same look all the time. I wish that we get a revamped Ui or something to look at And say "wow" this looks awesome. Maybe they're saving all that for the GS5.

  • PaulPSV

Does this mean that all the devices on this list will make it to other countries than the US?

  • My name is….

EU version of S3 will not get an update.

    If its true, congrats Samsung.
Now i hate you as much as Apple.

  • sguyx
  • Martin Jonsson

Is this only for US sold devices

  • cts

I bought the new Galaxy S 5 on Saturday. In fact we bought 2 of them. I can tell you with some disappointment that the Galaxy S5 emails does not have the same function as the s4. And the calendar has some new features but some of the good features for a person that uses it for work or not there. When you are on the phone and someone calls through you get disconnected from the original call. And the Swipe icon is not prominent when you need to swipe from one call to the other.I enjoy the phone very much including the notepad but I'm disappointed that a new version has arrivedd but the functionality that most business people use have been diminished. The backup feature that would tell you everyday that you were backed up is missing. I do realize the adventures of buying something that came out Friday and buying it on a Saturday is rather brave . And I do realize the goodness in all the new features. If someone can help me and tell me when they will update email phone capabilities on the Galaxy S 5 including when you add a contact that lets you add it to Google but not to your device as galaxy s4 allowed you to do. and one of the most important feature was the fact that any time there was a phone number you could click and it would dial the number for you now it becomes a search function to be able to click a phone number and have it dial. I would be gratefull to have someone help me.

  • Anthony Baldwin

My Galaxy Note 10.1 N8010 is still on 4.1.2, an upgrade is definitely required. It's wrong to not include it in any of the recent updates!

  • carlos2229

I own a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2012 N8013 and have still not received the OTA Kit Kat Update.

    • Soloist_5

Same here. Still waiting. Mine is refurbished.

    • sparky1959

      Same here. Still no update

  • hereami

WHERE IS THE UPDATE FOR THE N8013? STILLLLLLL WWWWAAAAIIITTTIIIINNNG

    • Flip Jumpman

I'll never by another Samsung Tablet (as much as I like the Note series) again if they don't update the original 10.1 (N8013)

  • jthorn

6 Months later and still no Kit-Kat update for the GT-N8013. No word from Samsung as to when or IF it will be forthcoming, since the 8013 is WiFi only and the announcement mentioned timings based on carrier.

  • Conor

I have the 3G version of the original Note 10.1 tablet (GT-N8000)

Purchased sim-free in the UK and still stuck on Jellybean 4.1.2. The same model has received OTA updates to KitKat in Germany 4 months ago! What's the delay

  • Luis

Just so I'm clear, this update still hasn't become available to the the Galaxy Note 10.1 GT-N8013. Does anyone know if there are plans for any updates at all for the 10.1?

  • sabin

this kitkat update. then always come "device overheating" that time device no heat. proble for galaxy note 8.
