One of the darlings of the Android custom ROM world, AOKP, has a new, and pretty incredible, boot animation. Some of you may recall that the AOKP team started soliciting new boot animations from their user community back in December. That contest has now ended, and the winner, Joachim Holler, certainly delivered the goods.

For what it's worth, I was pleasantly surprised at how awesome this looks. Generally, boot animations may not be noteworthy, but they are still the first thing you see when you flash a ROM. For that reason, they can be very important because they can set a good first impression.

By winning the contest, Joachim won his choice of a Nexus 5 or Nexus 7, and his work will soon be featured as the default boot animation for all new official AOKP builds going forward.

  • anon

Eh, it doesn't fit the AOKP theme at all. Also it looks like it's from 1995. Reminds me of the loading screen of some Win 95 game

Do we have a sore loser, anon?

      • DT

I doubt he's a sore loser. I didn't even know there was a contest but I think it looks awful and outdated. I guess it can't be worse than the unicorn though? To each their own...

        • USSENTERNCC1701E

Fair enough. Just thought posting with anon hinted at that. I may be wrong.

  • BarKa

You call it awesome? what about the PA bootscreen then?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

It's pretty awesome as well. The two can coexist.

      • BarKa

my point is... If this is awesome than PA is 100 times better than awesomeness

        • TheFirstUniverseKing

          That's a sharp point, champ!

  • jim

    Doubt it will loop well.

    • Vitaly Streltsov

Only few last frames will loop

      • Josh

The gears slow to a stop at the end.. so no loop necessary.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Not shown: AOKP letters split up and start an epic laser sword fight, with the P winning and pissing on the defeated letters' heads as the camera zooms out to show that it's all just a twinkle in a unicorn's eye.

      • Josh

LMAO, I want to see this if only in gif/vid format! My SGS4 with AOKP KK boots so fast it would either make the boot take longer to accommodate the animation or it would get cut off. Not sure how that works, but I might be ok with a bit longer boot times for that :P

  • Hans

    Ew, not good at all.

  • http://dabuxian.com/ Dabu

Heavy and clunky metal gears don't go very well with the simplicity of Android's and AOKP's design.

    • Atique Ahmed

yeah i wouldn't call this a "beautiful" boot up animation.. but it is cool

  • Fry

Better than the pink unicorn, now that was horrible. IMO.

    • Hal Motley

I liked the pink unicorn. It was an awesome novelty.

      Like all things...they mature.

      • Fry

They sure do....I like the newest one.

  • Alex Cruz

    Could have been better.....

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

You can say that about pretty much anything ever.

      • Alex Cruz

Oh I'm sorry, didn't mean to upset any fanboys hahaha I figured we could give our honest opinion here

        • http://mrmcpowned.com mrmcpowned

It's not really a fanboy comment if there's merit to it...

        • Alphajoe

You can. But no one likes unsubstantiated complaining. I'm looking forward to your video with the "better" version.

        • squiddy20

Maybe if you had stated how it "could have been better", your comment would have gone over more smoothly. If I say "I hate cats", most people ask why.

    • KhasMek

If someone had submitted something better, it would have been, le duh.
I love it, super excited to get it pushed out to the users!

    • Gabriel Melo

This is really far from what I'd like to have in a device. I'd love to see something minimal, like the nexus stock animation (both current and the previous one).

And also from a deisgn sense point of view, boot animations have some paradigms attached - simplicity and loopability are key. This winner is none. Looks like a movie. Doesn't fit the paradigm.

Apart from being beautiful or ugly (which for me personally, this is the case), it simply doesn't fit in what a boot animation should be. Bad choice.

    • Gabernasher
      • J.

Pardon the ignorance, but is there a way to use this as my boot up image?
Currently I have the Nexus boot up on my AOKP device.
Not entirely sure what to replace etc.

      • squiddy20

Gotta say, it kinda reminds me of the CM boot ani. Just sub in the unicorn for Cid, and add rainbow colors on the gear instead of the constant blue arrows.

  • cabbiebot

    I think it looks great.

  • ChrisHRocks

The old ics aokp boot animation (pink unicorn) was the best it's been down hill from there.

  • cmikeh2

I don't have a problem with it at all. I do believe that the runner up animation is more pleasing though.

  • supremekizzle

Motorola's boot animation looks way better.

  • fonix232

2009 called, they want their boot animation back.

  • Archit K

    Here's the runner up - https://plus.google.com/+KiernanMoore/posts/gmpJarAbotd

    Looks pretty IMHO

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I thought this animation was the tits personally.

    • CerealFTW

I did too. It was pretty creative and the animation is nice. Lotta people in the comments not liking it tho

  • Kylecore
    • Gabernasher

      Not much doesn't look better.

      • Kylecore

        We'll agree to disagree then.

        • Gabernasher

I was saying that very little looks worse than the two horrid boot animations you showed, can't we just agree to agree?

          • Kylecore

Ahhh i see, well then yes sir i suppose we most certainly do agree :)

    • Miles

Does AOKP even support the One X?

  • Rook HD

I think it's true to AOKP's spirit. Really like it.

  • david coffey

i think it's fantastic. i'm surprised there's as much negativity as there is towards it. the runner up is amazing as well. i would have been happy with either. i gotta say though, i've really been disappointed with aokp and their latest rom. i rocked their jelly bean rom religiously. but with the kitkat iteration, it's just not up to snuff. soooo many problems. i keep having to go back to carbon. great rom, too, but i'm just partial to aokp, because it was the rom i decided to stick with after rooting for the first time and trying countless roms for a month before deciding aokp was the best for me. been a couple weeks since i've tried aokp, maybe i need to give em another go soon.

    • Josh

I agree the animation is awesome. Already have it on my SGS4. As for the rom, Team Kang decided to pretty much start from scratch with kitkat. They wanted do some things in the background a bit different with settings and features to help make them more portable to future versions is my understanding. It's been pretty darn stable the last couple of weeks. Also the features are really starting to roll back in. Most of the major features are back and are being tweaked on a daily basis it seems. I run myself a build every few days and it just keeps getting better. I held out and stayed on the JB build until a couple of weeks ago because I just have to have the ribbons, but jumped to KK as soon as they we put back in.

      • david coffey

oh sweet, the ribbons are back? right on. i knew they started from scratch with the kit kat build, smart move. nice to hear the features are pouring back in, i'll have to flash back to it here in the next day or two. thanks for the heads up.

  • Jadephyre

Not a fan of AOKP, but this boot-animation I like :)

  • steelew

It was simple and not too time frame specific. I like it. Too bad I have an i337 galaxy S4 with a locked bootloader. I'm done with samsung after this phone. I miss my galaxy note, I could do whatever I wanted on that thing...the hardware felt slow after a while though. :(

    • Kylecore

I have the Canadian I337M, same phone as yours and bootloader unlocked. Don't blame samsung for it, blame whatever carrier you decided to go with my friend.

      • Jadephyre

Well, I understand where his frustration is coming from, because in the end it is Samsung who is bending over backwards to get their phone into the Line-Up of specific operators. They could just say "take it or leave it" but that would probably backfire for them. Also, another thing is that Samsung would probably like every phone to use its Exynos platform, and we all know how they think about opening that up to the public.

  • Humberto Hernandez

    Ok, didn't see that coming!

It's cool! Im sure it was hard to make.

  • Mario E Hdez

It's better than ugly pink unicorn that's for sure. Wouldn't sport it myself but nice idea.

    • Tim242

But you proudly sport that tacky mess known as Google Glass...you Glasshole.

      • Mario E Hdez

As long as it's not a pink unicorn

        • Tim242

You can disable the boot animation in settings. You can also replace it with your own choice. So, let them put whatever they want in the ROM that they provide you at no cost. : )

          • Mario E Hdez

I'm well aware. Big fan of aokp simply providing an opinion of pink unicorns but the rom is great!

  • guhu1

    I really like ParanoidAndroid's.

  • Owen Finn

How about no boot animation? That'd be even better.

  • godutch

    Very tacky indeed and unprofessional

  • Sir_Brizz

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think Paranoid and Omni have by far the best boot animations.

  • Android Developer

I don't know. It's ok, but I really liked the old CM 9 boot animation:

it had a cool time/speed warp animation, and i prefer the old logo than the current one.

  • Arnav Gupta

I generally do not come up to fight with trolls on blogs, but I just felt there was too much negativity around here. I am part of Team Kang and we all unanimously voted the winner and runner up. Now I'll take some to rebut on a few points
    1. "it doesn't fit", "bootanimations should not be like this", "it should be minimal"
    > I tell you what. Firstly nothing "fits", we throw in useful features as Quick Hours and easter eggs like Swagger Toggle with equal gusto into the ROM. If you really want all that professionalism, I tell you what, use a BlackBerry. And secondly, we feel this does fit. The gears match up so good to our logo.

    2. "i don't like it"
    > fair point, but this was an internal vote not a public one. it was about which one we liked.

and if you submitted something and it not in the top two, well what can I say about it. we liked a LOT of the ones that were submitted. at the end we have to select only 1 winner and 1 runner up, and it was a hard decision.

    3. "it could have been better"
    > omg look there is a sorely butthurt loser. (Hell even if you are not one, I'd call you one). it's you people who criticize politicians, but would not know how to govern anyway, the ones who bash the system, but break the rules first place, the ones who whine about everything but are no good with their own life. you people are part of the problem not the solution. if it could have been better, why did you not participate and submit your "better" entry

    4. Since I have lowered my dignity down to the level of feeding the trolls, I'd just step a notch lower and call out you PA fanboys too. You know what, you sound like douches everywhere you comment. I love a lot of PA features, and I love your ROM. And I love your bootanimation. Honest. I love CyanogenMod and Omni too. I contribute to all these roms via their gerrits. I feel that is how a community such as ours fosters. by helping each other out. But the PA fanboys all around, all I see is namecalling on AOKP/CM/Omni threads. Here's the thing developers do this for fun, users use whatever suits them best. end of deal. if you think you'll earn anything out of being douchebags on blogs and forums, trust me, it's nothing be disrespect.

    • http://dabuxian.com/ Dabu

Oh, so constructive criticism is called "trolling" nowadays? Interesting attitude. Users don't like your animation so you tell them to use BB. This leads to nothing.

      • squiddy20

In his defense (god I hate playing devil's advocate sometimes), some of the responses were not all that "constructive", i.e. "could have been better" without explaining how.
IMO it could have been better if, after it folded out to spell AOKP, it then refolded, bringing in the loopability that some commenters here were talking about.

        • DrakeTungsten

Yeah I thought it was going to loop like that, too.

        • Arnav Gupta

well then you would be in for a treat when it finally comes into the ROM ;)

          • squiddy20

Too bad I currently use and probably will remain with CM.

    • anonymous

  • pallzoltan

wow, i think this is pretty bad. for those who complain that such comments are unsubstantiated, well yeah, they are, since it's about liking it or not.

  • JazzEspresso

it is really ugly..like anon said it is like from 90s animation..i hate it

  • mavro aspro

i would like something like this "animation"...

My phone will started immediately :P

  • Ark

I like the stock android animation way better.

  • thiagomast3r

Well, I did like it, but I thought it's strange for a bootanimation to stops. Why? Because when the boot locks up, sometimes the bootanimation stops too (unless it is a bootloop, where the system would show the bootanimation would be on a eternal loop), so this is a indication of a problem. If the bootanimation stops, there is no way to know if the boot is still going or it's a problem with the boot.

  • Ankhwatcher

Why don't people get this? It has to loop! The end must be the beginning!

  • Meme

    Newsworthy my a$$...
