Let's forget about KitKat for a moment. A large number of Android devices out there still need an update to the latest version of Jelly Bean, and while many of them will never receive such an OTA, four of Sony's handsets are receiving one this week. The company is rolling out an update to the Xperia T, TX, SP, and V.

In addition to Android 4.3, the OTA brings updated Sony pre-installed apps, more integration between the company's media apps, and the launch of the new "Xperia Themes" custom interface. These are joined with the security enhancements that typically come with newer versions of software.

  • Google’s Android 4.3; Jelly Bean as standard – bringing Project Butter performance & UI response optimisation and a smoother graphical experience
  • We’re also uplifting Sony’s entire native app portfolio to the latest versions – bringing tweaked / improved / current experiences for (to name but a few):  Messaging, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID, Sony Select and
  • Sony’s Media apps: WALKMAN, Album and Movies, with Sony Entertainment Network cloud service integration* – a more converged and full Sony entertainment experience – Sony Entertainment Network & PlayMemories integration with a more intuitive UI, offering seamless access to both local and cloud content
  • The launch of our unique custom interface experience: “Xperia Themes”, with downloadable UI packs from Sony Select – more on this soon…
  • The latest Android security enhancements, matched with Sony’s mobile enterprise solution: Xperia in Business
  • Battery STAMINA Mode – updated version of Sony’s power management app, now with refreshed interface and more smart options for prolonging battery life

Just because Sony is pushing out the update this week, that doesn't necessarily mean you will receive it right away. Timing varies according to device, region, and carrier, so some of you may need to be patient just a while longer.

Will installing it wipe all your data? That's why I never updated my old phone.

    • Mattia

      No wipe required :D

    • Serge Cebrian

i would do a backup of at least SMSs and call logs and non cloud apps just in case :)

      • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

But if he uses Hangouts he doesn't need to backup SMS

      • Rob Johnson

Tbh wiping my SMS's would be a good thing, I have so many that trying to delete them crashes my app.

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

I bet this is the last update for these devices

If you're currently rooted, be warned that you may lose root with this update (even if you wait for the OTA and have RootKeeper) due to the heightened security features in 4.3. I rushed to install the OTA update on my ZL and lost root, and if I want it back, I have to go through a cumbersome downgrade to 4.2.2 in order to reroot.

    • xConjo

Can't you do the flashing an older kernel trick to root? I don't know if it works on zl, but i've seen it work on other devices:
      >You are on 4.3
      1-Flash 4.2 kernel
      3-Flash 4.3 kernel

      • basteagow

It's trickier on Sony devices due to the fact that, if you unlock the bootloader, you permanently lose certain proprietary features (unless you first back up the TA partition). Nonetheless, I'm delaying rerooting as long as possible since I don't need root often enough to mess with it just yet.

Sony 4.2 kernel = signed by Sony = will boot
And btw i got caught using pcc.
My phone is xperia sp (c5303)

Wow, that's so quick and smooth, Sony! Android 4.3! So new, I haven't even heard of this version! I'm still stuck on 4.4.2. :-/

    • Sheheryar Sukhera

I have one Xperia SP & just connected it to PC Companion.Voila! It's being updated now.If you're waiting for OTA, I guess that'd take a long time. Update it from PC Companion.

    I've already done this update,but,there's a problem,how can I root my xperia T? It's with stock rom

  • ojes

After update my phone is spazzing out. Over heating, turning on and off, vibrating every 5 minutes for no reason. Not charging properly. It getting impossible to play games cause of the lag and my iPhone earphones don't register anymore ! My phone was fine before the update.

    • lee

Mine is the same re turning.off and on for no reason and sometimes feeling hot too..!

  • Caligo Memnon

Well the option to take screenshot is gone on Xperia V. It doesn't work to hold the power button and volume down....soooo lame!

    • Jen

Have you had any luck getting it back? Ive just recived the update today and I'm lost without screenshot!

      • Caligo Memnon

Well it does work with power and volume button pressing together. BUT it takes a bunch of tries to get the screenshot taken. I am not pleased with this solution. They should leave it as it was, as an option when you press power button.

        Good luck!

  • Nagisa

I can't update my Xperia T. I am with T-Mobile in the US. Anyone else have a problem?

  • deanna aldric

My xperia t when i upd8 my screen shot's gone

  • Bill

They only had to make it a million times harder to take a screenshot, simultaneous awkward downward volume and lock screen button pressing - why?

  • khosrow

after that i updated my xperia tx to jelly bean 4.3,my device's battery empty just in one day i hate this update

  • Rob

My experia worked well before recent update. What I have now is a phone that is unpredictable, reboots without notice, battery consumption is excessive, I haven't exhausted the list but frustration is setting in. I do prefer the new screen appearance but cannot bear the volatile behaviour. Please sort out a fix!
