Google has pushed out an update to the Google Search app, which now means there's also an update to the Google Experience Launcher. We've got the APK for you to install below, and this is looking like a substantial update – it looks like the new (and probably official) name for the Google Experience Launcher is Google Now Launcher.

2014-02-05 19.23.27 BfvN1y6IQAEIDxj

What's New

Google says:

  • Bug fixes and performance improvements

We say:

  • New Google Now Launcher name with splash screen on start up
  • 6 columns on tablet home screens (up from 5)
  • AirBNB reservations in Google Now
  • Fixes disappearing icon in the hotseat bug
  • Hotword detection now works in British and Canadian English
  • Icon imports from old home screen
  • App drawer no longer resets to first page when you close it (unclear if this is intended behavior)
  • New animations for expandable card bundles (seen here)
  • Voice volume is now dependent on media volume (instead of system volume)
  • Customize TV provider and on-demand options
  • When setting alarms, Google Now says "setting alarm for [time]" aloud, with a new blue box appearing along with the regular card, though this part seems to be a server-side change that also affected the previous versions of Search when it was flipped on. If you hit Accept, the alarm card will stick around briefly, allowing you to view other alarms - this part is new to Search 3.2 (via Luigi Aversano)
  • UI enhancements for getting to appointments early or on time (via Rob Aymett - 1, 2)
  • Or if you're late (via Midas Gordon-Farleigh)
  • Action overflow button has moved from left side of cards to right
  • Fixes icon alignment in app drawer on some devices
  • A Winter Olympics 2014 Google Now card with medals and the upcoming events (via Adam Stephenson)

(we're still checking it out, might be more to come)

Be aware, you need to have the Google Home stub app installed to see the Google Now Launcher. This branding also doesn't show up on the Nexus 5, which already has the new launcher installed by default. Removing the Google Home stub and clearing search app data might fix it.

Note: Some people are reporting a black bar on the right of the N7 screen when in landscape after the update. I don't see it on mine, but many do. This can be reportedly fixed by clearing data for Google Search.

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. • bozzykid

Oh yay! A splash screen! Just what I've always wanted (if it were still 1990).

    • Morten Ulveseth

It's instead of an empty screen. I just got it and I found it looked much better.

  • remister

Google updating all their apps eh, I hope there is more to this!

    • pfmiller

Meh. A lot of app updates, but nothing substantial in any of them.

      • Qbancelli

It is substantial to me, since it fixed the missing icon on the screen after a reboot on my N7.

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Shawn De Cesari

Also worth noting that, on 10" tablets, 6 columns across is still less than the 8 allowed by the legacy launcher. 7" tablets always had 6 on the legacy launcher, so this update brings Google Now Launcher in line with that.

    • daveloft

I very much dislike the 6 across on my Nexus 10. Too much wasted space on the sides and I can't fit everything in the same number of homepages. I won't be using it on my Nexus 10 in it's current cinfiguration.

      • archercc

Im holding off for the same reason but love it on my N4. Not to frustrated by it though since its not officially available for either device. While its been great for me it sounds like there are a few kinks they are still working out before making it available for multiple devices.

      • turdbogls

like archercc said, its still not official for anything outside of the Nexus 5. give it some time. once its released on the play store, they SHOULD have this issue on 10" tablets fixed back to the 8 icons on the AOSP launcher......SHOULD

    • Morten Ulveseth

I prefered 5 columns on my 7". Looked much cleaner. Ah well.

      • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

That's what custom launchers are for. :)

I personally liked both 5 columns and 6 columns, but with 5 columns it was impossible to center 2-column-wide widgets like the analog clock.

  • Lackmann

In the comments on AndroidCentral somebody says it's gone active without the "Stub Launcher Hack" on his Nexus7(2013):

    Can somebody prove it?

    • Robert Macri

Didn't work... deleted the launcher, installed the new search, GEL is no longer listed under Home.

      • usaff22

        LTE or WiFi version?

        • Taco Monster

Are those the only two kinds of idiots?

          • usaff22

He edited his comment. First it said that it didn't work, which was what I replied to.

          • Dan

Thank you for this. Best laugh all day.

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

As I haven't received the update just yet and I'm much too lazy to install this apk, I'd like to second that request for proof.

  • Roberto Giunta

I hope they fix the stupid bug where Google Now loads indefinitely and drains battery like hell...

    • Alex S

I thought it was just me! It keeps your phone awake right?

      • Roberto Giunta

Correct. That's the reason I deactivated Google Now. I use my phone on some days pretty much the same and with Google Now I had about an hour less screen time (4 hours to 3 hours or even less).

        • Michael J Carroll

What I do is turn off Google Now and turn it back on. It usually gives me another day or so without any trouble.

          • Guest123

using google products is starting to sound a lot like using MS products. . .

        • wtfsss

Yep, I have to disable it because of this, too. Makes using the GNL sorta pointless.

      • Stephanie William

In the comments on AndroidCentral somebody says it's gone active without

    • CerealFTW

I thought I was the only one. Kills my battery twice as fast. I deactivated a month ago and my SOT increased an hour to 1.5

    • archercc

      On what device, a N5? I haven't noticed anything on any of 3 N4s.

      • Roberto Giunta

Yepp, N5 here. It doesn't happen with everybody but when it happens, it drains the battery faster than anything else.

        • Chris Talty

Are you sure it's not the GPS?

The N5 has some software bug that keeps location services on tied to the launcher. If you keep GPS on it'll massively drain the battery.

          • Roberto Giunta

Pretty sure. I'm using Nova Launcher and my Location settings are on Battery Save mode.

    • UniBroW

I have the same issue on my nexus 10 and my Note 3, disabling it fixes the issue for me. My brother, on the other hand, doesn't have the same issue as I.

    • Gandalf_Teh_Gray

God I hope so, have to manually kill it every time I open up Google Now

    • dcdttu

That would be an awesome fix. It's intermittent on my N5, but when it does it, I know my battery stats go from looking like a green ski slope to double-diamond black.

  • NorCalAngler

It's so frustrating that every stock launcher I've used doesn't have a column/row setting. I would use Google Now Launcher if they would let me have my 5x5 or 4x5 grid.

  • mikeym0p

They still didn't fix the dropped frame when you hit the top of bottom of GNow. Google needs a custom listview for Now because they hid the edge glow.

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

But it's still exclusive to N5 (unless you manually install the launcher apk)

  • SmithCommaJohn

Glad to see they fixed the number of columns and the disappearing icon bug. Those were really annoying.

  • Nathan

TV and video-on-demand providers can now be selected in Google Now.

    • Floris

But when I go through the networks in there all of them are foreign tv companies :( Seems they didn't activate the feature for The Netherlands yet.

      • Nathan

It's just the same with the sports teams.

  • Peter Zhang

But... GEL sounds so much better than GNL.

    • mesmorino

On the other hand, GNL sounds like BNL, which seems like where Google is headed these days

      • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

        Makes sense

      • Taco Monster

        Brookhaven National Laboratory?

    • Crispin Swickard

      Yo, are you GEL'n?

  • epsiblivion

I wish they'd release it on the play store already (GEL)

It now shows hints for the Nexus 10, and it also allows to uninstall an application from the App Drawer.

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

      Dude nice wallpaper!

  • TY

    Nexus 5 @ <458ppi = 5x6 homescreen... that's overkill.
Luckily there's xposed app settings to the rescue.

  • Bojan Tomic

But nothing's really changed that much...

  • SmithCommaJohn

I don't know if it's in my head, but everything seems a little smoother and snappier on my 2013 Nexus 7 after installing this.

    • daveloft

It's definitely smoother on my Nexus 10 after the update as well.

    • Klappa

      From stock?

  • lbrfabio

The Google logo is inside Google Search is now inside the search "widget"

  • Zyre

So i downloaded the apk and updates Google Search on my Nexus 4, but... nothing changed?

I do have a Home option now in the settings menu but it only shows ''Launcher'' aka the regular one.

    Anybody that can help?

    • Spasillium

As stated in the post, you have to install the Nexus 5 Launcher.

      • Zyre

What is this update good for exactly then? Everyone in the chat are posting images and opinions that they got the new launcher thanks to the update but..

        • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

If you don't have the launcher installed, then it just updates Search. If you install the launcher, then it includes bug fixes for the launcher.

Anyone who's saying that they got the new launcher due to the update either already had it installed or are lying.

          • Zyre

Thank you very much! I got it working :)

  • Taco Monster

Is it me or did this fix the Chrome Beta conflict with hotword recognition?

    • lbrfabio

  • AnthonyRyan89

Any nexus 4 users able to downlaod & install it because for me its not working

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

It's working fine for me. What's not working for you? The GNL or just installing the apk in general?

  • TY

    I think this is new:
By long pressing a search entry, you are now allowed to remove it from your search history.

  • jesusmbaez

Hmm I can't find that import option. Would love to use that right now instead of adding all the apps manually to folders. Any idea?

  • h4rr4r

    Canadian english?
Does this mean it supports "Ok Google, eh"?

    • SmithCommaJohn

The Canadian hotword is "Sooorey to bother you, Google..."

      • h4rr4r

        Sir, you win the internets.
I almost feel compelled to remove my previous post as yours is so much better.

        • Canadian

As a Canadian, I must emphasize that we don't use "eh" so arbitrarily. Actually, not many people here in Toronto use "eh" at all. However, when we do use it, it's always used as like, "I know, eh?" instead of "I know, right?". We don't add "eh" to just any phrase.

          • mamemame187

Here in BC we never use it....

Do we still need the old APK-file that just activates the launcher?

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

Yes, it's mentioned in the article:
Be aware, you need to have the Google Home stub app installed to see the Google Now Launcher.

  • jesusmbaez

The launcher seems to now remember your position (which I prefer).

On nexus 4 the app drawer is finally as wide as the screen. Originally it had a larger margin, now it looks good.

  • Stacey Liu

Are they ever going to fix the widget drawer bug?

If I ever scroll through it too quickly, the app FC's. This has been happening since GNL first rolled out.

  • David Margolin

There is also an option to set tv provider and video on demand provider

    • Dee Norbert

Yep but its not working here in Romania

    • jesusmbaez

      That was there before.

  • Colin Kealty

Glad to see canadian english (so i can switch back to having u's in colour and favourite) with hotword detection, and also the fix of the disappearing icons!

  • Karlo

This new version of GoogleSearch(GNow) fixed Hotword detection if you have ChromeBeta installed.
Just tryed it now.It works fine!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Looks fixed to me.

  • Stanley Chan

Anyone tryed on Nexus 7? Do we have now transparency bars?

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

You always had the option to get transparent bars, you just need to install the Google Home stub app from the Nexus 5.

If your question is if the GNL is now the default launcher with this new Google Search app update, then the answer is 'no'.

    • Stanley Chan

My home screen status and navigatior bar And drawer all have transparency. Very nice ☺

  • Mayoo

Google Talk --> Hangouts (replaces Talk)
Google Experience Launcher --> Google Now Launcher

Wtf Google ... ever heard of consistency? We know hangouts replaces Talk already. People who doesn't know that probably doesn't know what talk is, doesn't care what it is or won't even notice.

They should just replace the name like they just did.

    • daveloft

Google never once used the term Google Experience Launcher.

      • Shawn Cheever

I think it may have been implied at one point because of the apk filename containing "GEL" in it. I may be wrong or there may have been other evidence pointing to it.

  • Bonginkosi

On my N4 I was using textdroider_dpi to set the res to 316dpi in order to a 5x5 app drawer with gel. That no longer works it's 4x5 at both 316 and 320. Anybody got the same?

    • Chris

I'm getting 5x5... I have Xposed installed though so I'm not sure exactly. Even when I set 5xDEFAULT, it defaults to 5x5 in Gravity Box.

  • Luqmaan Mathee

After updating, whenever I try to open GNL, Google search force closes. Anybody know why perhaps?

    • Vlad

Same here... uninstalled and reinstalled previous versions and still doesn't work. I can't use GEL now because of the update

      • Luqmaan Mathee

I just installed the old Google now again.

    • archercc

Maybe clear data for both the launcher and search? Also what android version?

      • Luqmaan Mathee

Well I now see that it support 4.1 and that's what I'm using: (

    • http://tonybullard.com/ Tony Bullard

Are you on 4.1? Evidently it no longer supports 4.1 and below.

Time for me to start looking into custom ROMs.

      • Luqmaan Mathee

VYes I am but it seems Google rolled out a separate version for 4.1 that excludes the import function. Anyway, I'm glad to have it and hotword detection seems to be available even with music on now. Anyway thanks to Google our phones haven't died yet.

  • Franco García Bailez

I have a S Advance with the google experience launcher, it worked fine till now that I update Google Search. It shut down, and the google launcher too. I think that if I want GEL I'm gonna need to downgrade google search.

PS: I uninstall GEL and re-install it and when i try to open it give back something like "no place TEXT_HOLDER" and Google Now shut down.

Someone else try it in a S advance?

    • joca

Same on find5.... Don't know why....

    • SK

Franco Garcia, this might be why.

"Google Now Launcher no longer supports 4.1.x now. It makes a call to Configuration.getLayoutDirection which is in 4.2+"

I'm having the same issue with my GS3, and it turns out my latest update on it is 4.1.2. This would explain the reason why it's not working.

  • Daniel Traynor

I love GNL. But what I don't love is the MAHOOSIVE icons on the homescreen. Is there any actual need? And no option to hide apps from the drawer. Argh.

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/pamela-hill/ Pamela Hill

I saw the black bar that you mentioned on my N7 after updating. But all I had to do is reset my wallpaper & it disappeared.

  • Pithism

Hey i have a nexus 5 and i dont get the import option or the splash screen after i updated the app. any ideas?

    • Darkbotic

      Clear data for the Launcher

      • Pithism

I cant find the launcher in my manage apps. Am i suppose to wipe google search or something else. I do see Google Now Launcher in my home options, I just dont get the import options etc.

        • https://plus.google.com/102862831744598656090/about Wesley

Yes, clear data in Google Search and it should pop up. It worked on my Nexus 10 but I haven't tried it on my Nexus 5 yet.

          • Pithism

yea no dice. I don't get that nice welcome screen shot from above, just the old one.

        • Darkbotic

The import and splash screen appears when you install it for the first time. Clearing data makes it thinks it's the first time.

          • Pithism

im over it now, i've tried clearing data deleting apps and reinstalling and i get no luck.

  • Rob Johnson

Still not working on the Sony Xperia SP

Confirmation transparency bares in my Nexus 7 2013. Nice☺☺

How to remove the search bar from the screens anyone know? On my stock laucher was just remove google search, but now, I cant remove google search without lose GEL...

    Any sugestion?

  • Unkn0wn0ne

Google Now Launcher no longer supports 4.1.x now. It makes a call to Configuration.getLayoutDirection which is in 4.2+

    • Vlad

So that's why it crashed after I installed Search 3.2?

    • http://tonybullard.com/ Tony Bullard

      This breaks my heart.

I guess it's finally time to get a Custom ROM on my Galaxy S3

      • Unkn0wn0ne

Actually a new update just came out today. This time it throws an unsupported operation exception while converting demensions for the screen. I believe this is an issue with my screen size. (Smaller than average.)

    • AgustinRodriguez

Dang It! My bionic has 4.1.2. And I really don't want a custom rom either......

  • Frisi

I think the black bar in the N7 is because the background is not long enough in landscape mode. Use a bigger image and "problem" should be fixed.

  • manface

anyone else in the UK notice the TV and VOD section doesn't work?

  • Subhojit

"Icon imports from old home screen"
How do you even do that?
    Don't see an option.

    • https://plus.google.com/102862831744598656090/about Wesley

I accidentally closed it the first time. I cleared the data in the Google Search app and got it again when I set up the launcher.

      • Subhojit

Have done that thrice already, but it only does the same thing like it always did at startups.

        • KingofPing

Seems dependent on pre-existing launcher. It won't notify me if I only have Sense launcher, but if I install Nova first, it prompts me.

        • https://plus.google.com/102862831744598656090/about Wesley

It worked on my Nexus 10 but not on my Nexus 5. I don't have an explanation for that one lol. I don't have any other launcher on my nexus 5 though.

  • Taco Monster

Another addition: when scores update in any game you're following, there is now a cool animation for the changing numbers. I'll see if I can post a video.

  • Binshad T P Haris

The launcher now remembers your last position in App drawer..:) Wat an osum update...!

"When setting alarms, Google Now says "setting alarm for [time]" aloud, with a new blue box appearing along with the regular card. If you hit accept, the alarm card will stick around briefly, allowing you to view other alarms. (via Luigi Aversano)"

This part isn't new, it's been around for a while. I use the alarm on my phone and tablet all the time and this changed just in the past month or so. It's a server thing, not a new Google Search update thing.

    • miri

The banner is new, the rest is old.

  • Jacob Frasca

    New wallpapers!!

  • NoBullet

I remember hearing that the Google home apk is buggy on n7's. Is this still true after the search apk update?

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

They fixed the two issues people were having, which was losing the hotseat icon on the far-right and also having only 5 columns on the launcher which made it so you couldn't center 2-column-wide widgets like the analog clock.

  • miri

Rotating the device messes up the wallpaper cropping. where the black bar appears depends on the orientation in which you set the wallpaper initially.

  • Tower72

Installed the launcher and the updated search on my stock GS4...works well except for the fact that I cant have more then 2 screens (the main one, and the google now screen to the left). I tried dragging over and icon to the right but it doesnt add another screen, so no widgets for me I guess... Oh well, its STILL better then TouchWiz!!

    • Brigham Cooper

Try filling up the first page and then download a new app. I know that the only way I get mine to make a new screen is if the first one fills up

      • Tower72

yeah thats what I did..I guess that it wont let you have a blank homescreen, so putting a single app or widget on the first one allows you to make others, which sucks since I like having the first one blank while I run some LWPs I like!

  • Jekabpils

Did they fix non functional back button in Google now?

  • Mystery Man

Voice volume is now dependent on media volume. Yay

  • John

Is Google going to release their launcher to the Play Store anytime soon? Also, why are they holding out?

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

My guess would be that they're holding out because of the minor bugs to be ironed out still.

  • https://plus.google.com/102862831744598656090/about Wesley

"6 columns on tablet home screens (up from 5)"

I really wish it was 8 on larger tablets like my Nexus 10! The default launcher is 8. If they are getting ready to release this into the Play Store, I hope they fix this.

    • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Default launcher should have 10 columns IMO

    • ken

what's weird is that the app drawer remains at 5 columns on my nexus 7

That IS weird, it went up to 6 on my N7(13). Are you sure you're on Google Search 3.2?

  • Artevius Hardin

The Launcher no longer works on my GSII after updating. It crashes Google Search upon any try to get to the homepage.

Just installed the new search and launcher on my Note 3 but is there anyway to keep my old Samsung weather and calendar widget? They are no where to be found in the widgets section? I love the default Samsung weather app and calender full screen widget. The weather app is also gone, weird? Also it runs flawless on my Note 3 with the launcher switched to the Google Launcher. Although there is no way to revert on you select the default app as the Google Launcher the option doesn't appear in the clear app associations section. The only way is to uninstall the Launcher side app. Any help would be great, thanks!

    • Luqmaan Mathee

You can't keep those widgets in other launchers
Samsung has locked them to Touchwiz home.

      • Fifth313ment

Thanks, yeah that sucks as I really like the calender widget and weather/time one too. :(

    • Trenton Wilson

Check under settings for an option called home ... That should let you choose between launchers.

      • Fifth313ment

Nope, wasn't there. But I figured it out. First I went to settings and enabled "EASY Mode" then I went and undid easy mode. That screwed up everything and my launcher was then set to Samsung but with a Google Launcher icon in the app drawer. Then I went to the "Clear Defaults" settings tab in the task manager app. I undid the touchwiz one and then hit home which it then asked me again to pick. Once you set Google Launcher to the default always in the clear defaults screen it will be named Google Search, no Google Launcher which was the problem. But if you want to go back to Samsung just clear the Google Search "Launch by default" option.

        • Trenton Wilson

Just realized why you couldn't find it ... I am running a kit Kat ROM on a lg g2. The home launcher choice is only available in 4.4 and up ... Sorry :-(

  • Stanley Chan

Still needs Home.apk... wen they release on playstore will be for all devices?

  • Cory Wilson

How do you trigger the import option?

  • Amit Deo

I'm unable to install it.....any ideas?

The actual 'Install' button isn't getting clicked on my Xperia Z running AOSP 4.2.2. I've downloaded and installed dozens of APKs from here before, this is the first time this is happening.

  • ken

the "say ok google" indicator on the search bar now also disappears after awhile, but hotword detection still works

  • Harris Thanos

To Fix the black bar in landscape, you just have to re-set the wallpaper while the phone/tablet is still on landscape!

  • gloscherrybomb

OK google is still not working for me. UK English, offline packages installed. Rebooted, no difference.(Nexus 5 stock)

    • gloscherrybomb

P.S. I have Chrome beta, does that make a difference?

If you're rooted, you can use Xposed and Unicon to get the ability to use custom icon packs.

I'm on 3.1 and my overflow button for cards is on the right, and if memory serves, it's been there for a little while now. Am I missing something?

Does VIdeo on demand provider show up any providers? For me it just shows a blank popup.

    • edwmsjr

      Just blank for me too!

  • paranoidandroid

A few things I don't think others have mentioned (all based on Nexus 5):

Bluetooth used to launch the old voice dialing interface, now it launches the Google Now voice search box, so no more need for third party apps like Bluetooth Launch.

Google Search icon in the app drawer used to launch the Google Now voice search box, now it launches the Google Now homescreen. By using DashNotifier and Dashclock, you can now get your Google Now notifications on your lock screen and have them launch directly into the Google Now homescreen when clicked.

Hotword detection seems to be more calibrated. I used to be able to say "hey Google" to launch a voice search (which I preferred as it is fewer syllables), but now it looks like only "OK Google" works.

    • miri

If the device is asleep, Bluetooth will launch the voice dialer, if it's awake, then it goes to voice search.

      • paranoidandroid

Just tested in my car and you are right about this. Very annoying. Why don't they have it always launch the voice search box? Who needs the voice dialer when you can make calls with voice search? Back to using Bluetooth Launch...

  • SurenSeven

Broke the 445 dpi hack in build.prop for me. Icons looking bigger again

  • out2late

Looks like the update has made it out... my version now reads

  • Drifter2410

Though this isn't big but I believe in earlier versions when you dragged an icon fr the drawer on the filled hotseat it would say "No more room on the hotseat" but now it says "No more ro in the Favourites Tray" :)

  • Fifth313ment

Is there anyway to tweak the DPI as the icons are huge on the Google Launcher on my Note 3?! They are as big as the Google Play icons which are friggin huge! I tried changing the font and that changes fine but the icons stay huge. Thanks!

    • cellabonez

      about using 182 or 200

  • NinoBr0wn

So when they added the ability to download from Google image search, that was a mistake, right? Because that's the only thing I can come up with at this point.

    • Kristoffer

I'm having this issue as well.....I haven't heard many people speaking on it. It may be a nexus 5 thing. I've gone to google about it with no response as of yet

      • Allen_Davis

I third this. My girlfriends Nexus 5 does not have this problem but I do. Glad to see iI'm not alone.

    • Dan72

      I'm exp this too on my n5. n7(2013, 32gb), a vzn GSIII.

  • Stanley Chan

Guys Ive changed my dpi from 320 to 300 in my N7. any problem? Icons became little small . can I change the dpi to another number? Less than 300? What number? Not too small...

  • Unkn0wn0ne

For All 4.1.x users, Google Search 3.20.17 fixes the issue. Although, it still doesn't function on phones with a 3 1/2 in screen.

    • http://www.modminecraft.com/ Nick Coad

      Uh, fixes what issue?

      • Unkn0wn0ne

Hi, i have a problem with GNL on my Nexus 7 2012...
I have installed latest version off Google Search ( and GNL, but i don't see GNL in Home app setting. Only original Android Home and Nova Launcher.

  • NunjaBusiness

Who the hell is removing comments? I posted the first comment when this was published and it is nowhere to be found. WTF?

    • ja_som

      My was also deleted...

  • Kostas

After the update, when I put my phone in flight mode, Google Search stays awake for about 2 hours overnight. When I wake up and I enable wifi and data, the waking up from Google search is inexistent... How is this possible? A bug maybe? I cleared data just to be sure but nothing changed...

I am trying to install this application by allowing the install app check from unknown source on Moto G. But it is giving me an error "App not installed"

  • Robertjm

I'm trying to install the Google Experience Launcher on my HTC One w/stock KitKat ROM (rooted). After downloading and installing the GEL apk from Android Police I'm greeted with an error message telling me that, "Google Now Launcher requires a newer version of the Google Search app." That's how I got to this place. I downloaded this apk. But, when I went to install it, it tells me Install Failed. Double checked the md5, which was fine. Only then did I notice the version number. According to App Manager I'm running "" which is already newer than the one you have posted here. Thoughts? I would have installed that version with the ROM.

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

Let's first make sure that you grabbed the right .apk. Which .apk did you download from AP? Please link me to the article. Also as your error message pointed out, it is now called GNL, Google Now Launcher.

      • Robertjm

Here's the page I got it from:

What's odd is that I had a problem with something else and so I rebooted into Recovery and deleted my cache and Dalvik cache. Then, when restarting the phone, GNL came up as an option to load. I didn't even have to go through and install it.

      • Robertjm

Here's the page I got it from. It actually called it GNL. I guess I'm so used to calling it GEL, that I slipped.

What's odd is that I had to restart my phone form something, and wiped cache and Dalvik cache. After the phone came back up, GNL was an option without my having to install it.

        • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

So wait hold on, I'm confused. Is it working now after restarting? I'm actually not sure if GNL works on skinned ROMs, you'd have to ask someone else. I would suggest posting on the comments thread on the newer article, not this one. Maybe someone will help you there.

          • Robertjm

Yup, it just started working after the reboot even though I hadn't run the installer again after it told me that the installer had failed. STRANGE eh?

        • Spasillium

Old post is old but damn, wiping dalvik and cache fixed Now Launcher for me too. I'm building my own ROM and GApps and it wasn't working for me until I Googled and found your post. Looks like I'll have to add that in to my GApps script now. Thank you!
