Popular file and notification-sharing app Pushbullet has already supported transparent status bars on KitKat devices, but with the latest update, it now has a transparent navigation bar as well. It doesn't make using the service any different, but it sure is pretty.

This is essentially a textbook example of what a simple app developed for Android 4.4 should look like. But thus far the vast majority of apps, including Google's, have yet to find a way to pull this off.

Version 13.3 brings language support for German, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese. For those that have yet to make the list, there's a website where users can help the team introduce additional translations.

What's new:

  • Added Spanish, German, and Simplified Chinese translations!
  • Want to help us add your language? Check out this site! https://crowdin.net/project/pushbullet
  • Transparent navigation bar on KitKat!
  • Added the option to submit bug reports from "Send feedback"
  • Shrunk the app by 25% (down to just 1.2mb!)
  • Fixed some other bugs

This upgrade makes the app 25% smaller, so if you have yet to give Pushbullet a try, downloading it should be faster than ever.

That looks SO good. Android is going to be so pretty once the majority of apps roll this out.

My only complaint is that they need to finish the buttons. Before they were relying on the bottom black bar to "close" the buttons, which was fine, but now with a transparent bar they need to draw a line on the bottom.

Too bad Pushbullet's functionality never really makes me actually open the app

I like the top bar transparency, since uses a color that doesn't make the icons hard to see, but the nav bar doesn't look good, white on white is stupid.

    • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Or just make the buttons black, problem solved

  • Thomas’

I don't like the gradient at all. The bars should be gray but transparent, that would look much nicer and more consistent.

    • tanjiajun34

I myself would prefer the gradient. More of a smooth transition from the status bar to the application. But if you prefer your way, you should try use the Paranoid Android's PA colour.

  • John Smith

"Dismiss on Device" finally works! NICE!!!!!!!!!

  • Qbancelli

This app and Gravity Screen On/Off are 2 of the most useful apps in Android, IMHO.

I gave Gravity Screen a shot recently, and it was awesome, except for some bug where it kept my Note3's screen on indefinitely, so I had to uninstall it. The 6% increase in battery use wasn't really worth it either.

  • Imparus

    slightly OT
For some reason I can't get the notification from the phone to show up in chrome notification, since I don't have the bell in windows tray area. Does anyone know how to turn that on?

    • John Smith

      Chrome Version? 32+???

      • Imparus

Yes(33) running chrome beta, the weird thing is the tray show on my laptop but not my computer, so it must be a setting I need to run On/off or a bug that is causing it :S

  • Samuel Hart

    Oooh, pretty :3

  • http://dabuxian.com/ Dabu

Why can't more apps just add it? Is it so hard to implement? lol

    • A dev

It can cause all sorts of problem on non-simple layouts. You rarely can have one solution for all screens. And it can bring a lot of headaches to make it work properly on some cases( example : scrolling screens with side drawer)

  • Dani R.

More apps should implement this man, although with white it doesn't look as good as it would with other colors, but it's the idea. Pushbullet is at least implementing really good features of Android Kitkat!

OT: I never understood the logo of Pushbullet well, is it meant as a bullet or as "ID" ?

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

I'm pretty sure it's a bullet. Always looked like one to me.

  • https://plus.google.com/108596272537415356460/posts Jason Farrell

Just waiting for Google to "fix" Chrome such that this'll work in Linux too. Apparently there's no support for "rich notifications", though I get all kinds of notifications from my other extensions, like Prime Player and GMail Checker+.

  • usaff22

The thing is, why doesn't Maps implement this???

    • Crispin Swickard

And every other google app. :(

    • Hans Pedersen

Google are a bit sloppy with a few of their apps. The gallery in the Google+ app isn't able to switch to full screen view on a Samsung phone. That problem shouldn't be too hard for a developer to find, one would think... :)

  • aouniat

Being a translator and a loyal fan of Pushbullet, I just posted my Arabic translation for the app as a way of showing appreciation. I hope next release will say "Added Arabic translation!"

  • http://nexworx.com/ Dries

I feel like I'm an outlier here, but I really dislike the way this looks. The translucent status and navigation bar are features that were specifically designed to be used in combination with edge-to-edge content. Not on flat color surfaces like Pushbullet and a couple of other apps use them. Look at the screenshot snippet I attached, does anyone seriously think this looks good? It feels kinda cheap to me. I guess it's a matter of taste.

I'm a huge fan of Pushbullet and use it every day, but I kinda feel like this particular feature was just implemented for the sake of being implemented. The translucent bars are one of the only clearly visible new features that have been added to the Android platform in a while, I feel like that factored in more than the way it actually looks in the app.

    • Milind

I don't like the transparent bars either. I prefer to see them clearly against a black background. I tried it with XPosed and immediately turned it off. But I'm sure that many folks like it, so it's cool that Android is so customizable.

  • hakan

Are there any other non-launcher apps which already support the transparent navigation bar? I think this is the first one I ever saw. :(

    • Sahil Chaturvedi

      Sliding Explorer. :)

      • Raffy Carabello

        Which shouldn't use it

  • dandmcd

    谢谢你! Pushbullet很棒!

  • Xoib

I will not use it because they don't let signing up without a Google account.

  • Raffy Carabello

No. No. No. I feel awful whenever I see full-bleed apps designed to use the navigation and notification bars just because 4.4 allows it. Just because. This is not how the feature is meant to be used. It's meant only when you NEED to go full bleed. Why would Pushbullet need that? Or Sliding Explorer? Nope, they don't.

  • http://www.LOVEanon.org/ Michael Oghia (Ogie)

PB is such a good app!

  • WitnessG

I hope more apps to this more often. It looks so nice and its the reason I use Tinted Status Bar.
