There were some delays, but HTC's last-generation flagship device is getting the bump up to Android 4.2.2. Yes, AT&T has approved the OTA for its version of the HTC One X. Sadly, this will be the last new version of Android it sees. It's better than nothing, though.

The news was broken by HTC's executive director of product management in the US, who said the update is targeted for the 29th. Of course, that leaves some wiggle room in case AT&T gets cold feet. We didn't get details on this update, except that it's Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5. However, it's probably going to be very similar to the One X+ update announced last week, which included:

  • Android Version: 4.2.2
  • HTC Sense: 5.0
  • NFC Fixes
  • AT&T Address Book Fixes

The international version of the device got its update a while back, that included a larger list of tweaks. We'll know for sure when AT&T posts the official details as the update rolls out.

Does anybody really care by now?
I mean, at this point people should've dropped the One X altogether and go for a better choice, maybe even with a different carrier

    • Yves Theunissen

Being a HTC One S user who isnĀ“t getting any updates via the official way I can say: yes, people care. Knowingly or not.

Not everyone changes this phone day one in May 2012. A lot of people bought this phone on contract at a reduced price just before or right after the HTC One was released, meaning they are stuck with this phone for another year. So every change, especially radical changes like Sense 5 that improve the overall experience and perfomance, is welcome.

    • German Leon Azzi

Yes, we should all just do that. We should dropped a "flagship" we bought just 12-18 months ago for over 400usd in some places of the world, and go for another device for the same money. Having a phone is not moving from device to device on a yearly basis.

    • Drayon

Yes, this is a massive update. I would go as far as to say the sense 5 update to the one x is one of the biggest updates a mobile device has ever seen.

      • Alex

Yeah, people will laugh because it's only Android 4.2.2, but the change from Sense 4 to Sense 5 is pretty massive in a good way. Plus, how many new features were really added in Android 4.3 and Android 4.4? Not many. Even on stock Android I hardly notice the difference, and on a skinned build you'll notice even less difference. I believe the One X already supported TRIM for example, which was a highlight feature of 4.3, and Sense has been rocking a transparent status bar with white icons for a long time now, which was one of the most noticeable features of 4.4.

The One S is the reason I won't buy an HTC phone again. They made a big deal out of it when it came out and it got basically 1 update in its life. No thanks, HTC.

My sister and brother-in-law each have One Xs. My brother-in-law's never got the 4.1 update for some unknown reason. Maybe his will get this update.

    • Rob

AT&T doesn't do OTA updates. He actually has to check for the update himself. Settings>AT&T Software Update>Check for Updates

      • Jonathan Berry

Umm, he did that. Several times. Always said he was up-to-date. Also OTA means over-the-air, which is exactly how my sister's One X updated.

        • Dan

Check again. I just got my update 3 days ago.

      • Alfred Boye

am running 4.0.4 on my htc one x at&t, i checked for the update and noting came all i saw was checking for new update available now and noting came i keep trying still the same pls what can i do

  • Captain Spaulding

Man, if I would have waited 3 more months, I could have had Android 4.2.2 on my HOX instead of getting that darned Moto X. :/

  • Marc Manix Catino

Every little update counts, seeing I'm stuck with mine until January 2015. When I can upgrade to the next great out of date the second I buy it phone.

  • jgarrido

So I just checked for an update, knowing the 4.2.2 update is supposed to drop today, and was pleasantly surprised to see an update available! My excitement turned to confusion though when I noticed the download was only about 18MB, which couldn't possibly be 4.2.2 w/Sense 5, and alas it wasn't.

So now I'm a bit confused and disappointed, as there are 'no updates available' at this point. Is this small update that still has me on 4.1.1 some kind of prerequisite for the 4.2.2 update? That would be unusual, and doesn't really make sense.

    • OAKside

Exact same experience here. Tiny update, under 20 MB, software version still reads as 4.1.1, Sense 5 update obviously not installed. No idea what's going on...

      • kf24

Turn off automatic date and time then set the day to tomorrow, then check again for updates.

        • OAKside

Thanks. Update found: 538 MB. Wish me luck... (already getting stuck at 30%)...

          • docdoc

i still got stuck at 20% for more than one hour...wtd...help!

          • OAKside

Toggle (turn off, then back on) Wi-Fi or Airplane mode in settings. I was stuck at 30% indefinitely, this instantly fixed. Updated successfully.

    • tnt

Downloaded the small 18mb, then move your clock forward one day and check updates again.
I'm downloading the update now, 537mb.

  • DDroid45

had the ONE X+, let it go for the HTC ONE, only downside was i let go of 64gb internal memory for 32gb, upside i gain a way better phone experience and 2gb of ram, instead of 1

  • dee

Wack. I updated today and now um very disappointed... Help

    • jgarrido

Uh oh, what's wrong? Wifi issues? I saw that as a concern when it originally became available a few months ago in Europe, but I'm hoping they have that resolved by now.

  • Anthony

I haven't even gotten the "prep" update yet. Smh.

  • docdoc

Got the small update in the morning and then reset the phone's date to the next day got the new update around 537 MB but it's been stuck at 20% or so for the last one hour...

  • bhoux89

awesome! its downloading now!! thanks guys

  • Andy

Ok so I got a little excited this morning hearing that the update would be available today. I checked for an update, and it wasn't available. No big deal. But now, it won't let me check for updates again until 24 hours after when I first tried. Obviously one day is not going to kill me, but this seems really stupid. Is there any way to get around this?

    • Andy

I played around and moving the date forward also solved this problem! Thanks for the tips guys, though they indirectly helped me. Update is downloading as we speak.

  • Tom
