Minuum-Thumb

Most current smartwatches, such as the Pebble and the Galaxy Gear, serve as notification hubs for whatever smartphone is paired to them, but this limitation is something several Kickstarter projects have sought to change by effectively turning smartwatches into phones themselves. This approach doesn't address how ludicrous it is to peck out words on such a tiny screen, but Minuum, the Android keyboard that fits the entire alphabet into a single row, could just be the ideal solution. The team has released a video showing the magic in action.

On phones, I find using Minuum to be more hassle than it's worth, especially when the time comes to type out passwords (even with its ability to pull out a full keyboard as needed). Yet I can see a tangible benefit to sticking it on a smartwatch, even if, ultimately, you would probably still be much better off just pulling out your phone.

Born and raised in the rural South, Bertel knows what it's like to live without 4G LTE - or 3G, for that matter. The only things he likes sweeter than his tea are his gadgets, and while few objects burn more than a metal phone on a summer day, he prefers them that way anyway.

    I personally swear by Minuum on the phone. For full length passwords it pulls out a full length keyboard now, and for everyone else it's super fast and scarily accurate at its word choices.

      You are correct, but I still find swapping back and forth between the full keyboard and the Minuum one to be jarring.

        98% of the time I am not putting in passwords. I will happily take the extra screen space that minuum gives me over conventional keyboards. It does take a little while to get used to though.

      I'm a big Minuum fan too. They've got some work to do though;
      * Holo design instead of the current Gingerbread look and feel
      * Emoji support
      * Trending word support
      * Contextual return/enter button
      * Option to hold instead of slide for sub actions
      * Option to hold instead of slide on full keyboard for special characters
      * More special characters

      I hope they can pull it together and make a big push to be a first class citizen of the alternative keyboard world by implementing such features and catching up to Swiftkey who is arguably the front-runner in third-party keyboards.

    looks good if you can master it. The problem is....mastering it.

      yep... google voice search ported to the smartwatch would be more ideal

        Why can't we flag comments on mobile any more? (Or can we?)

        • Roh_Mish

          Mobile version removed My Discus, has got too slow. It does not log me in many times. (when i click on an option to login, it opens a new tab, shows gears and then closes)

      You can actually add a spacebar, at which point, it's like using any keyboard you've ever used.

  • miri

    Wouldn't use it (or even a smart watch for that matter) but it looks cool.

    I want a Pebble with touchscreen

    • yodatom10

      problem is when touch screens tend to get wet... they go crazy

      • Grayson Carr

        Exactly. The Pebble can be used while swimming. With a touch screen, using it while swimming wouldn't work so well.

    Job well done!! You saved 5 seconds!!!

    This is tech done wrong

    • Wayne Randall

      It's like Jurassic Park.. Only thinking of 'could' with no regard to 'should'. Wasted time and effort really.

      At least the watches won't eat us if the power goes out.

    • Alexei Watson

      The only possible feature I would want from a smartwatch would be standalone GPS and heartrate to run fitness apps and sync later - without the phone on my person. As far as I know, none have built in GPS (like garmin watches).

      All this camera, messaging and phone calls crap is just useless if your phone is right on you. It needs to provide something your phone can't already do.

      • My name is….

        You have a strong point.

        All the things I can do with my phone, I don't need a smart watch to do. Phone is always on me.

        For wearable tech I only find use in other stuf, like you said or tracking the elderly...
        Or stuff like that, you get the gist....

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

    Nothing like a Bluetooth earpiece for advanced voice input. That's all smart watches are missing

  • cody

    I think smart watches will not be successful on the market place. For most people, they are superfluous and the benefits do not outweigh the cost or the "nerdness" of wearing one. Taking a phone out of your pocket or purse is a better choice for most people.

    • Kaero

      I've got a Pebble and besides actually having a watch now, it's nice to be able to quickly glance at my wrist while at work to see why my phone vibrated rather than wondering for hours until my break.

    • Niall Murray

      I see your point, but with phones/phablets getting bigger and bigger having a watch mirroring your device might get more common.

  • http://twitter.com/anishbhalerao Anish Bhalerao

    Next they should do is put a 4k screen on a 2 inch watch...
    And then the big thing: making a watch that turns into a dick with wireless connectivity to the user's dick, so that he doesn't need to undress to pee, or better, to have sex. Now THAT will be "satisfaction".

      You have a seriously sick mind...

      • http://twitter.com/anishbhalerao Anish Bhalerao

        You know what's sicker? Putting more and more and more and more and more bloatechnology onto a 2 inch display.

  • Mark Washington

    Who would have known that phones would be this advance .... Give the smart watches time to evolve ! Innovation that becomes useful and efficient takes time.

    • engursh

      Learn grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation.Then we might take your post as more than a retarded comment. Probably not though.

      • Mark Washington

        Really! Thank you for at least reading my comment. It means a lot!

  • naviman

    I think we should give some props to the devs for this. Just to make something that works this well is ridiculously impressive. Yes, its completely useless, but I think credit is due.
