The family of accessories for the Galaxy S4 has a new arrival. Hot on the heels of Samsung's launch of a similar product for the Galaxy Note 3, the wireless charging S-View cover for the Galaxy S4 is now available. Before now, if you wanted to charge your phone wirelessly, you'd have to take the cover off and replace it with a wireless charging back. It's important to note that there is no difference between this and the regular S-View accessory, other than the additional contact points to enable Qi charging. This new accessory should make aficionados of these products happy since they can now have their cake and eat it too.

As with all official Samsung accessories, this one is on the pricey side. The cover's MSRP is $69.99 by itself, without a wireless charger. It's presently available in both black and white, and in-stock at Samsung's online shop, Amazon, and Best Buy. As far as Amazon goes, there appears to be a large price discrepancy between the black and white versions. The black one sells for $54.98 while the white one sells for full retail price. In the case of Best Buy, buyers should beware. The retailer appears to have replaced its listing for the regular wireless charging back with this product instead, but kept the SKU the same. In addition, only the white one shows as an S-view cover. Clicking over to the listing for the black version will show you a regular wireless charging back. This could simply be an error in Best Buy's inventory system, but an error like that could end up netting you the wrong product, nevertheless

So you can buy a chinese cover for couple of dollars and the wireless receiver for around 7 bucks, total less than 10$. Yet $asm$ung will charge rip you off for 70!!!????

I opted in for a wireless receiver on my Note 3 for about $12 and returned the bulky and heavy official replacement charging cover. Not a fan of flip cases, so for me it was definitely the way to go.

Looks kinda like the movie 2001 hibernation units.

Not really relevant to the article, but these S-View covers do work with the Google Play Edition GS4 even though it doesn't have Touchwiz. Its functionality is very limited, though. You can see the time and notifications in the window, but that's about it. You also used to be able to answer/reject calls in the window with the 4.2.2 and 4.3 builds, but that's no longer possible since the KitKat builds rolled out. That's due to the fact that the GS4 GPE ships with Google's new closed-source dialer. Samsung can't modify it to add in the hooks needed to control it from the S-View window. Disappointing, but not surprising.

Samsung showing its true scumbag self yet again. Why do people keep buying their garbage?

To be fair, I personally think that the official flip covers (with or without the S View window) are the highest-quality flip covers you can get for the GS4. Obviously I haven't used every cover ever made, but the cheap $10 S View knockoffs from China feel like exactly that...at least the ones I've used.

Are you sure the wireless charging coil isn't also in there? I doubt it's in the phone since people would be able to easily put some tin over the points in order to enable wireless charging. It still doesn't account for the $70 price tag but it's more then just the two points on the case.

$70?!?! How will they move volumes?

  • Dan

Ah for f**k sake Samsung, I've just got the wireless charging case, sacrificing the s-cover and you go ahead and bring out a combo. Well, I love both so I guess I'm gunna be that sucker! Not a fan of non-genuine Sammy parts so gotta pay more I guess! :<
