ps3

If you've perused the Google Play Store on the web in the last few days, you may have noticed something missing: the Action Bar, wherein you usually find the drop-down links to app categories, top charts, the Play Store settings menu, and other important stuff. We've noticed it too, and we've got no explanation. In addition to making it impossible to browse apps by category or popularity on the web, it's blocking access to the links to My Orders, Settings, and the Android Device Manager, at least from the main Play Store page.

ps1

The bug is cross-browser, though I've noticed that the "collapse" behavior seems to take a little longer in Internet Explorer than in Chrome. Strangely, the bar re-appears once you log out or go into Incognito mode. Observe:

ps2

The Play Store's Action Bar returns if you browse for Movies, Music, Devices, or Newstand items, but it's gone again when you look for books. (Obviously your mileage may vary with this behavior.) We don't know when this strange bug started appearing or why - maybe Google is working on the back end and simply hasn't noticed yet. In the meantime you can see your Play Store orders by going to this address, where you can also see the Settings and Help buttons. Again, that's on my PC and my browser - the site's behavior may change based on your location and setup.

The Android version of the Play Store seems unaffected, so if you're used to browsing solely on your device, feel free to disregard this post.

If anyone can help trace what causes this, it'd be awesome. The Javascript is minified, so reading it isn't exactly my idea of a fun Friday morning.

But what the hell, not only are the categories hiding, but also the My Orders and Settings links. How does that get to a live site?

    • kekkojoker90

exist many things for beautify the js and let us to see the complete js. Obviously depends on the method used to obfuscate the js. Example i used js scambler age ago :P

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, the Chrome Dev Tools' beautifier unscrews the display part, but it's still obfuscated and unreadable because function names and variables are renamed.

    • Jarrod Davis

There's a button in Chrome's developer tools that can unminify JavaScript. That coupled with breakpoints can help if you know where to look.

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I used it, but the JS was still obfuscated enough to make it more of a pain than I wanted to deal with.

        • Jarrod Davis

          Oh. Well that sucks.

        • http://www.stevenmattera.com Steven Mattera

Also when using the unminify tool I noticed you can't make local modifications to the code. I gave up trying to find the bug when I found that out. =/

    • Robertof

Well, to display it temporarily this may work:
      document.getElementsByClassName("action-bar-container")[0].style.display = "block";

    • http://www.stevenmattera.com Steven Mattera

Something is setting it to be "display:none" the only place I can see where the action bar is mentioned is in the: (Numbers)-main_page_js.js

In the file the action bar is set the a variable "b.a" on line 11,342. I also set a breakpoint in this file and went step-by-step and the bug doesn't seem to be in this file.

I can see Categories and Top charts in IE and Chrome in Incognito mode. I think the ad block er on Chrome is messing up with javascript to hide this.

    • CharlesTF

I don't have any ad blocker and the action bar hide heres too on Chrome.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

The ad blocker doesn't have anything to do with this.

As for incognito and signing out, this is precisely what the article already stated.

    Can't reproduce with Chrome 31.0.1650.63 on OS X 10.9

I tought it was only my account.

I was trying to get a refund for a game and I searched the "My order" option trough all the play store website. lol

When is this abomination of a website going to get back all of the features of the old web playstore? Not even expecting to get back the speed of the old site...

the new google play store sucks.

Oh, since it worked normal in incognito I thought one of my Chrome plugins was interfering somehow but I was too lazy to find out which. I'm glad I procrastinated and saved myself a probably very frustrating half an hour of plugin management.

I mostly bother that mobile Play Store is not showing the 'last update' date on apps now that it shows info for 'in-app purchases'

    Is loading fine on Firefox

Interesting.... this started around the same time that googling "christmas" does what it does. Maybe they have been working behind the scenes to christmas-ify the Play Store and an error has crept in?

  • d

No, it not cross browser. It works fine on Firefox.

  • sourabh sekhar

    Incognito?
I see what you did there!

Yea. I just brought up the developer tool of my browser and delete display: none from the div.

  • AtiRage

In the "wrapper" div find and disable the css of element.style's (the display:none part).

PS. Now under "My orders" list is only the apps I payed for (when I was able to, and in the currency I bought them), I don't know if this is new or was I just blind :S

  • David Hart

I have to ask, is it still happening to everyone?
    Because it is to me.
