We've already cruised through Liberty City and significantly lowered property values in Vice City, now it's time for a west coast vacation in San Andreas. The third Grand Theft Auto game of the PlayStation 2 era just landed on the Play Store in its blocky, polygonal, sandbox glory, and you can pick it up for a cool $6.99. No in-app purchases, no time-outs, just good old-fashioned Rockstar madness.

San Andreas takes the GTA action to California with a huge, fictional city amalgamating Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas, and some rural backcountry that hadn't been seen in the series up to that point. Like Vice City before it, San Andreas moves the clock back, this time going to a slightly larger-than-life version of the early 90s. You play as CJ, a young African American making his way through the various facets of the criminal underworld. You steal cars. You kill people. You do other things that kids probably shouldn't be allowed to do in video games.

unnamed (54) unnamed (55) unnamed (57)

This was the last GTA game on the PS2 and Xbox, and for a lot of players, it was significantly better than Grand Theft Auto 4, which tended to lose focus with too much to do in the fictional city. Improvements over Vice City include slightly better graphics, more vehicles, customizable cars and player avatars, an entirely new genre-spanning soundtrack, and expanded mini-games. The Android version features adjustable graphic settings and compatibility with MOGA and other Bluetooth controllers.

The game is an enormous 2.4 gigabytes, so clear away some space on your phone or tablet before buying it. Also, it looks like a number of early buyers are having download issues. The game is also available for at least some Kindle Fire models over on the Amazon Appstore.

Game is broken, do not download. "Download failed because you may have not bought the game" for everyone that's bought it so far.

    • BigTimmay

      Forgot the

      "1 star !!!"

    • bungadudu

      The same problem with drm....

The ones who bought it in playstore are blocked but the cracked version already on Internet plays without any problem.

      Nice job Rockstar!

      Those having problem check,trick there.

  • Michealtbh

Looks like GTA doesn't work for anyone

  • Akshay

Is it really broken for everyone? With 3.7 stars it seems it works for some, but not others.

    • rockstarteasrs

I think it is everyone, all the 5 star reviews are just "yay downloading now" type reviews.

      • Mehmet Fatih

"5 star! Downloading now and cant wait to play it!!"

        • BigTimmay

"I'll update when I'm at 65% and 5% increments from there!"

          Reminds me of XDA

      • Mozaik

i envy ios users , there game was awesome from day one , ios platform is good for gaming.

        • das

i dont ,IOS isnt even in HD ,my PC is ,if people so desperate to play SA download it on PC

          • Mozaik

its not about HD ,its about games getting to play fluently, can i take PC to train , office or even at bathroom ;).

          • das

well android beats iphone by having .video display settings ,its nice we can choose what to increase and sacrifice in graphics for optimal gameplay ,and unlike IOS ,android allows multiple controller support for games ,and the larger display helps a lot too ,without being bias ,both platforms have their benefits and downfalls

          • Mozaik

Ios devices also support controller , having quad core gpu but still have to sacrifice graphics is not a good sign for android whereas even iphone 5 plays game at full graphic without framerate drop and android have biggest downfall of frame drops which is worse for playing games.

          • das

er ,again ,match the resolution to iphones in the GTA game ,and performance is the same if not better ,IOS only supports " apple supported controllers " whereas android supports virtually any usb and bluetooth controller ,even keyboard and mice ones

          • Mozaik

once again resolution doesn't matter if games not performs well ,yeah you are right about controller weakness but still there is a option and its gonna grow in future.

  • Joseph Lanni

Not working. Downloads and then says it failed because I may have not purchased the app. Really? I am using LG G2 BTW.

  • CJ

Wow. my love for supporting Rockstar is kind of tough on this one ... 2.4gb is quite a bit too much for my little ol' 16gb moto x... and $2 more than usual GTA games have been.

but ill probably still buy it when the download kinks have been smoothed over...

    • Mozaik

you are complaining for playing greatest game of ps2 era for being 2$ more and 2.4gb storage , no wonder why IOS devices gets great Apps first even though android having 80% marketshare.

      • CJ

ehhh i wasnt really trying to complain, just voicing my hesitations to buy the game right away. I had originally planned day 1 purchase but obviously thats changed with the download errors.

and 2.4 gigs truly is a shit ton of space needed for an app.

and $2 sure whatever, big deal. but now lets recap: issues with the game, shit ton of space, $6.99 ... it's almost as if I was buying a gameloft game. thank god for no in app purchases tho. *phew*

        • GraveUypo

2 gbs hasn't been a shit ton of space for 5 years even in mobile.
it's the storage on these phones that's shamefully small. that gets evident when an app like this gets released.

        • Mozaik

But surely its not game fault , its your fault for buying small storage phone for gaming. Enjoy blood sucking freemium games if you cant pay 7$ more for a game, once that was 60$ worth money.

          • CJ

You make a lot of sense my friend, I can't seem to argue any of this. And the download issues are reporting to have been fixed just now, so...

Currently going thru the download process :)
I love R* too much to let the GTA Mobile games go unsupported!

  • Adrian

    Waiting for Gta 4 :D

    • brararsh

Always keep waiting.. Man ENJOY what you have right NOW!!!

    • http://www.williamint.com William Aleman

GTA 4? I want GTA 5 on my tablet.

  • david coffey

After playing the awesomeness that is gta 5, I have no interest in ever going back and playing the past gta's. Ever.

    • david coffey

don't really understand the downvotes. GTA 5 is just that amazing. hopefully the next GTA will be back in Vice City. miss that city.

      • Brendan Dillon

Because what you're saying is that because GTA 5 was great, none of the others are worth playing, which almost anyone would disagree with.

      • jozilife

david, one does simply not FORGET a GTA series. Rockstar slaved away at porting this game to mobile, show some damn gratitude.

    • Alin

They're downvoting you 'cause they're jealous that you don't live in the past yet you don't complain about the future of the gaming industry either, like most do.

  • Dee Norbert

    Nexus 5 not working

  • Anchan

Is this game works on nexus 4?

  • Cheeseball

I'm not doubting the "Download failed because you may have not bought the game" errors a lot of people are getting, but it launches and runs fine on my EVGA Tegra Note 7. I'll try to install it on a Galaxy S II (GT-I9100) and a Nexus 4 in a bit.

    • lucky

wow, you are the first, go post on reddit

      • Cheeseball

No, there are others who got it running on a Galaxy S III (GT-I9300), a Moto X and a Nexus 5 if I recall some of comments in other forums.

      • Cheeseball

No, there are others who have the game working on their phones. It authenticates with Rockstar Games' servers on first run, just like how Final Fantasy III, IV, and V do on the Play Store. This same situation happened when Vice City was released last year.

I'm guessing those authentication servers are hammered hard. But once you authenticate, there's no need to be online as the license is stored on your device. Just make sure you don't clear the app's cache or erase data otherwise you'll need to authenticate again.

        • Cheeseball

LOL, weird. Works and runs fine on the Tegra Note 7, but I get the "Download failed because you may not have purchased this app" error on a GT-I9100 and a Nexus 4.

  • OniKyanAE86

Working fine on my Sprint Note 2 and Galaxy S3.......

  • ChainsawCharlie

This is awesome release, but sadly requires an external controller. Just like the earlier GTAs.

    • SimMac

      It does not

      • ChainsawCharlie

        It requires not? Qe?
Sure you can play the game without one, but it will be tricky. Especially with sniping and missions where the touch controls just are not accurate/fast enough.

        • Fussolia

Then why would you even point that out if there is no way to properly play it on a touch screen?

  • David Marion

    Nice one, Rockstar.

  • Romario Maxwell

"No in-app purchases, no time-outs, just good old-fashioned Rockstar madness." The Play Store on my GT-I9500 in Jamaica says there are IAP's.

    • Cheeseball

It says the same for Vice City as well, but of course there aren't any at all.

  • Raul Ortiz

mebe its a problem with 4.4 and up

  • Rob Johnson

Available for Xperia U but not Xperia SP, wtf?

  • cdlq456

Not compatible with Galaxy Note 2? Wtf Rockstar, is an one-year old phone and can run every fking game until now, Vice City runs at 60fps, so how can this game not be compatible? I hope this is just an error on the Play Store

    • Pook Me

Yeah I saw that. I'm very disappointed. Rockstar Games really start to piss me off! GTA IV: I waited 3 fucking weeks after I botbought because the game had some proproblems of compaticompatibility with some NVidia cards, after that I waited more than one year to see SA on my phone. It out on iSuck phone ONE before than Android. Now it's finally here but not compatible with Galaxy Note II. I won'ton't wast my money: When I will be comcompatible with N2 I will search SanAndreas.apk... Fuck R*

      • das

rockstar have always been shit at making ports ,gta4 on PC was fucking shit and they cant make phone ports half decent either ,stupid scottish wankers

      • Alex

Im really disappointed with rockstar for this, I have the galaxy tab 3 and have the same problem

    • jake

Yea I know right I got the same prob. Too man. Anyways my device is unrooted and on jelly bean can any anyone tell me how to fkin get rid of the drop box which is taking 5 gigs of my storage plus anyway you can move app to sd card on unrooted jellybean note 2?

    • KiwiBox

I know right it's so dumb it can run on crappy phones.

    • Davis Hernandez

exactly, how is the first note compatible but the note 2 isn't?

  • http://www.baplm.blogspot.ro/ Baplm.blogspot.ro

I'm getting "Download failed because you may have not bought the game" on Nexus7

  • josh

Does it work with ART? Someone has to ask.

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/77537273@N03/ Herman

It is a work of ART.

      • Anton Larchey

Nope, he's talking about ART, the new runtime in Kitkat :P Nobody knows for now as it crashes after loading !

  • mateor

    Update is out.

    • mateor

      and working now

      • mateor

and now it crashes after loading instead...

        • Micheal DeSanta

          all hail android

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Crashes after loading screen... WTF rock star?

  • Pawbrotm

"This was the last GTA game on the PS2"
You are wrong. The last GTA for PS2 was Vice City Stories.

    • http://seapip.com/ Thomas Gladdines

Eh no, vice city was released before san andreas

      • Adam

He's talking about vice city STORIES not vice city.there are two vice city sagas if u didn't know.

  • geeTOTHEpee

Ive been anticipating the release of this game for the past month. I did my research to ensure that it will be compatible with my galaxy tab 3 7.0
Even Rockstar.com support lists my device as being supported. So WHY THE EFF IS IT TELLING ME THAT IT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MY DEVICE?!!!
Am I delusional or does rockstar just not want my money? My guess is the latter. Here is proof it is not the former.

It does say galaxy tab 7.0 plus, is that what you have?. If so they might have just forgotten to list it probably worth sending them an email.

  • Mado

Bugs aside, just imagine that in few years you can play GTA 5 in your pocket devices.

  • Michał Loska

not compatible with Xperia Tablet Z !?

  • nino

    the game is supr

  • John Craft

Checkout 99GTAguides website for some cool cheats.

  • Krzysztof

Quite buggy, low frame rate on htc one

    • Cheeseball

If you get artifacts like that, it either means the GPU is overheating or the data file you downloaded is readable, but corrupted.

Try re-downloading the game on a more stable connection.

  • Zoki

    hOW TO ENTER CHEATS? :)

    • http://seapip.com/ Thomas Gladdines

I tried entering them with a usb keyboard->crash, I guess it will be possibe after a few updates have resolved these crashes.

      • Zoki

HOW U DO THAT? on my n7 2013 keyboard dont work :)

        • http://seapip.com/ Thomas Gladdines

Maybe it's removed from aosp, it worked fine on omnirom and cyanogenmod here with my otg dapater and my logitech illuminated keyboard(old version which is still usb cable instead of wireless adapter).

          Devices I tried: Nexus 7 2012, Xperia S, Xperia Z

  • TRACE

I am so happy that this day came! I was always dreaming to play gta:sa while pooping! All jokes aside it works fine on gt-i9300, if I max it out game lags a bit and battery drains sooooo fast. Game is a total knockout!

  • CERN

    Working on nexus 7 2012

  • john

i got a 32 GB micro sd and that FKING android show that i dont have enough memory to download this sht FK GOOGLE AND FK ANDROID HAHA on iphone and other ios devices you dont have problems like this

  • Davis Hernandez

well but to be clear the people who made this port didn´t made the vice city one so lets give them some time

  • bean12345

Aside from the whole, you haven't purchased the game error, its kinda annoying that the game can't be moved to SD, 2 gig might be a pittance for an SD card amount of memory but I'm guessing none but the latest phones have that much internal RAM to spare.
