Google Thumb

A Google+ Android app update is inbound that should help many of us get in the mood for the upcoming winter. And let's just say, this one is rather quirky.

What's New?

Once the update has made itself at home on our devices, all we need do is give them a shake while looking at one of your own photos to add snow to the shot - the same Auto Awesome effect Google rolled out just last week.

G 1 G 2

But that's not all. Vic Gundotra has shared additional new features users can look forward to via, appropriately, a Google+ post. This update enables us to search for posts, people, photos, and communities from a single search box. We are also given tighter control over who can buzz our phones by adjusting the "Who can notify me" setting and selecting only certain people, such as friends or family members. In addition to that, we can explore content by category when visiting the "What's Hot" stream.

G 3 G 4 G 5

What's new:

1. Shake your device to add snow to your photos. Many of you enjoyed last week’s#AutoAwesome snow (http://goo.gl/913KlK), so we’re adding another way to let it snow this holiday season. Just open one of your photos, shake your device, and snow will start falling. Shake again to save. (http://youtu.be/YWRa6Cz6m_M)
2. Search across more stuff, from a single box. Now you can search for posts, people, photos and communities — all from one place. So the next time you’re looking for something specific, just tap ‘Search’ and type what you want.
3. Control who can buzz your phone, without missing notifications from others. If you only want certain people to be able to buzz your phone (like family), simply adjust your “Who can notify me” settings. Notifications from others will now appear in “Everything else,” so you can read them whenever it’s convenient.
4. Explore content by category. Now when you visit the What’s Hot stream, you’ll be able to “go deeper” on a number of different categories — from Music and Science to Sports and Photography.
5. Spread the love this holiday season. Now when you +1 posts in the stream, you’ll see something lovely.

The update is rolling out gradually, so you might want to bundle up and make something warm while you wait.

The update is going out to users in stages, so we've provided three mirrors containing the APK below.

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

  • Wazzifer

Will offer my first unborn child for the APK.

    • Mike L

Sent the APK to Artem. If you're Artem check your Gmail.

      • Wazzifer

I am Artem's alter ego, yes.

    • Indianajonze

for THIS update? really? seems a high price to pay for what is a relatively minor update...

      • Wazzifer

Hey hey I can do whatever I want with MY children!

        • Indianajonze

if you keep offering them for dubious apk updates i'd venture to guess they soon would not be your children...

          • Roemraw

Well given the train of thought presented by Wazzifer, do you really think the children would be better off with Wazzifer instead of someone who can secure new APK's fast?

          • Thomas Lovett

Who cares about kids when you can CREATE SNOW!

          • http://www.modminecraft.com/ Nick Coad

            One begets the other.

    • http://bertelking.com/ Bertel King, Jr.

There you go, three mirrors containing the requested APK. And don't worry, you can keep your unborn child. But when the time comes, you'll know who to name them after.

    • Santeri

I will offer mine when they get rid of the totally terrible black bat in the bottom which appears when I scroll back up. It just doesn't fit.

  • usaff22

There was also a rather large Google Keyboard update (enabled blue or white color options), and a small Hangouts update.

  • josh

Will the G+ icon finally be resized to match those of Google and Google Settings in KitKat?

    • Joe Micelli

Yes it now matches the rest of the icons.

    • Santeri

Yepp, it is fixed. Looks good now :)

  • htls69

    please need apk

  • ArclightX

    Hurry the hell up Bertel!!!

  • Frank Schumacher

Locations doesn't work for me on my Nexus4.

    • Jeroen de Jong

I also get FC's on both my Nexus 10 (stock 4.4.2, rooted and unlocked) and Xperia Z (rooted, unlocked bootloader and custom 4.4.1) when choosing Locations... After losing my homescreens on the N10 this morning when I installed the new search version (3.1.24) I'm almost losing faith in the google test team :S.

    • Nathan

      Did you report to Google?

  • Jiggy

What's the 'go deeper' in what's hot all about? I can't see any difference in that stream?

  • Pascal

The could add option to make autoawesome photos manualy.

    • http://k3rnel.net Juan Rodriguez

They did! Shake twice and it'll add it to Google's queue. After a few minutes you'll get a notification (If you have it enabled) that the AutoAwesome pic is ready and you can save the gif. =D

      • Pascal

I mean all autoawesome not only snow.

        • dmcomp

If you had to to it manually, then it will not be "auto" anymore..

          • http://www.modminecraft.com/ Nick Coad

Okay but you get what he means - "manual-awesome" if it makes you feel better.

      • Robert Macri

but if I shake twice my camera opens up... #motoxproblems

  • Nathan

I'm not sure about you guys, but Locations/that nifty widget crashes Google+ now.

    • Indianajonze

same. was just about to post this. open locations and the whole app force closes. no bueno...

  • Kenny O

Do you realize it's snowing in my room goddammit!

  • Taco Monster

Goddamn Google removed the clickability of 'originally shared' in reshared posts. Why Google, why??

    • Taco Monster

I guess this is why they stagger their rollouts.

  • TechWings

    The update breaks location.

  • dan

When are they going to break photos and google+ apps and remove gallery ?

  • Adrian

Google + the best Social Network.

  • SetiroN

How about fixing image quality instead of adding bullcrap?

    • Indianajonze

      whats wrong with image quality?

      • SetiroN

Ever tried sharing a screenshot on g+?

    • http://www.pavelkounine.com/ Pavel Kounine

Odd. The quality of the image shouldn't be affected much by the service via which you're seeing it. Blame the source.

  • miri

It looks like Auto Awesome Movie also got a pretty significant update: The videos tab shows auto backed-up videos as well as device videos, you can scroll through all your content on G+ rather than up until the first load point and the edit UI has seen some tweaks including a new way to set the length of the video.

  • Balajee Ks

Guys, the auto awesome effects stopped working in the latest update of Google + version

  • Mike

Found the same feature in Apple Store app for iPad when typed in search.
