If you've been dying to get your hands on CyanogenMod's [kind of] recently-announced screencasting tool, the wait is over. The app has been released to the Play Store via beta channel. There are, of course, a few requisites before the app will work:

1 2

Once all of those qualifications have been met, you're free to give this new beta a shot. It's worth noting that the app will show up as incompatible with any device not currently running CM11, so it's important that this is done before you can install the app.

One of the things that makes CM's screencasting tool so interesting is how easy it is to use. Once installed, a simple power+volume up combo will initiate recording, complete with voice recording. This is definitely easier than any other solution on the market, and so far it seems to be working quite well.

    "Pretty" start screencast to begin??

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Lmao, just noticed it. Read right past it at least 5 times.

    • Franco Rossel

Koush must be like "Goddammit autocorrect"

  • confused

Why is this even in the play store if it is CM specific...couldn't they just bundle it into the ROM???

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

This way you don't have to update the whole ROM just to update the app.

      • Alex Coldstone Simon

Like Motorola has been doing with a lot of their "system" apps.

        • http://404err0r.com/ Henry Park

          you mean Google....:P

      • Mlibbey

Buuuut you kinda do because it only works with last nights nightly...so you technically do have to update the whole rom lol

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Not really. After this nightly, you don't need to update... ever if you don't want.

And in 6 months, you could be running stable and not need to update to get app updates.

          You get the idea.

      • Cherokee4life

But didn't Google remove the install CM app because it "encourages people to install ROMs and crap" Where is the line? Because now I am installing CM11 on my TF700t just to use this :)

        • Christopher Bement

No, they removed it because it encourages inexperienced users to void their warranties and royally fuck themselves over, it was a terrible plan to put it on the play store in the first place. However that being said, they also removed Apollo and who knows what else from CM. Personally I'm willing to bet this will be gone too.

    • QPHALO

Actually I'm on stock 4.3 and it works on my phone

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Works like a charm on the GNex running 1209 CM11.

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

As Cody Toombs pointed out, Screencast is now getting used when talking about both recording the screen and casting it to a TV screen, and it's getting confusing. This should be called Screen Recording.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/cody-toombs/ Cody Toombs

      Google "define cast"
      Just sayin' ;)

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/pamela-hill/ Pamela Hill

Nah, Screencasting a computer screen has been around a lot longer than Chromecasting. I say casting to a TV has to come up with a new name. We had this one first.

    • Francois Roy

Hi there! Koush says it probably works on all 4.4+ rooted builds.. Would you be nice and put the apk up for grabs? The market won't let me download it as I'm not running CM..

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    • afazel

Or maybe it can be tied into AllCast and streamed to a TV eventually (soon hopefully).

  • Franco Rossel

Am i the only one getting "We're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server." on the Play Store link?

  • Bobaboo

Incompatible with D2VZW running latest CM11 nightly

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Try to load it on the device, the web Play Store may lag recognizing your CM11 update.

      • Bobaboo

Says it's incompatible on my phone as well

        • josuearisty

          We need the apk!

  • Langdon

    Apk please?

  • jonzey231

I've already got this in OmniRom on my N4! :D

    • Cj

It's not the same... Omni uses Google's implementation, which does not cater for proper stop command. As such they have to execute a kill all "hack" to stop recording before the maximum time limit is reached (30 mins on Omni).
In all honesty, Koush's implement is cleaner and Google does not allow for simultaneous audio recording

      • Guillaume ‘XpLoDWilD’

From the user point of view, the only difference is audio. Even if there's a hack to terminate the recording, it works as intended.

  • Nick Saulino

So... does 'cast' mean 'record'? As in Screenrecord, since it's not casting (as in Chromecast) anything.

  • Nicolò Danielli

    Nexus 4 with CM11 1209: reboot when I tap start recording :-/

  • ithehappy

You have to use CM. Hmm. If by installing CM I can get a 1000 sq ft land for free on moon I won't be installing it still. Damn these guys are suckers, and the sad part is people don't even realize it, just because no money is going out from their pocket!

    • ad

This makes perfect sense. You have convinced us all.

      • ithehappy

Lol, you think I was trying to convince some kids? The only thing which will convince CM users are idiosyncrasies. It's just a matter of time C.M will get a taste if their own medicine, till then hail Crappy Modifications.

  • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

SCR Pro does the same thing. No hassles. Why is this a big deal? Genuinely asking.

  • http://www.youtube.com/crisr82 Kristian Ivanov

If someone happen to try this with actual games, do let me/us know how well it records (preferably on a dual-core device to be able to compare the results with the other apps on the market)

  • http://www.emuparadise.me/roms-isos-games.php rarely online

Screen recorder pro already does this and better so I don't see the point to switch.

    • http://www.youtube.com/crisr82 Kristian Ivanov

if you're talking about the same app I think you are, it's by far the worst I've ever used, no idea what your standards for "better" is

      • http://www.emuparadise.me/roms-isos-games.php rarely online

I don't know what app you are talking about but I haven't had any issues with scr pro since it works really well since I tried it.

This on the other hand isn't any better when I tried it.

        • http://www.youtube.com/crisr82 Kristian Ivanov

SCR is called "SCR Screen Recorder"...there's another app called "Screen Recorder Pro" which is terrible, that's why I said that
And yes, SCR is pretty ok...though Screencast still outperforms it on older devices...for new ones though, it's good.

          • http://www.emuparadise.me/roms-isos-games.php rarely online

I found video and audio quality is a whole lot better when using SCR then this.

          • http://www.youtube.com/crisr82 Kristian Ivanov

what framerate does this one get?
(my Galaxy S2 gets 35fps on Screencast and 23fps on SCR, and nothing even worthwhile on Shou, so I'm looking for something better)

          • http://www.emuparadise.me/roms-isos-games.php rarely online

Screencast gets the higher fps at 30 but the audio and video was quite poor while SCR got 25 fps but the audio was clear and sounded great.

To be honest SCR is the best on the market at the moment.

  • Nijanthan_V

How do I get this app?

    • Akshay Mehta

The procedure is right at the top

  • SuyashSrijan

    APK anybody?

  • AbuOsaid

Im a beta tester that can't download the app..i have cm 11.. what wrong

  • Kavi Dhokia

I've also recently released an app that uses the native screenrecord utility built in to Kit Kat to provide smooth screen recording.

    It's called Rec.: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spectrl.rec

Should be useful for those of you (like myself) who have a 4.4+ rooted device, but no custom ROM with screen recording already implemented.

  • Guillaume ‘XpLoDWilD’

Or it's in an opensource, integrated fashion in OmniROM and many other ROMs.

  • Grensd

For those you are asking for the APK of this screencast app, Koushik posted the direct download link ni this Google+ page (with installation instructions).

  • Adrian

    I like this feature.

  • Christopher Bement

Taking bets as to how fast Google removes it for being made by Cyanogenmod...

  • mgamerz

Pretty "Start Screencast" to begin recording?

  • Joshua Bluehawk

I like how its not compatible with my N5 on Stock 4.4.2. Lol.

    • EeZeEpEe

Why would it be compatible when it's specifically made for CM11 nightlies?

  • LeVoyageurNu

    Not work on S4 9505..
