Android 4.4.1 is rolling out for a number of devices today, including the Nexus 5, but as with most Nexus device updates, it's happening in stages. As such, it could be a few days before you get the OTA if you choose to wait, and we all know what that's like: annoying. So, here's the Android 4.4.1 OTA for the Nexus 4.

What's new in Android 4.4.1? We know the Nexus 5's camera has been improved, but not much else, so we're working on figuring that out at the moment - expect a post in the coming days.

In order to complete the steps below, you need to have the Android SDK installed. The SDK contains the latest version of adb and fastboot, which you will need for flashing. You will also need a MicroUSB cable to execute adb sideload, fastboot flash, and other commands. You don't need a USB cable if you're just planning to download the OTA zip directly to your device and flash it from recovery.

You must be running Android 4.4 KRT16S for this OTA to work.

Download signed-occam-KOT49E-from-KRT16S:

MD5 sum: fc144a5ef26821e0c5fd8d1bfe148a42

Size: 51.9MB

Note: This method, just like the native OTA update procedure, does not wipe your data.

You'll use the adb sideload command after making sure your device is properly detected by ADB. You can check out our full sideload guide here – the process is identical except for the file name. If you have a custom recovery, it can be flashed from there. Just copy the file.

The update will likely kill root on previously rooted devices, but it's easy to get back:

  1. Flash TWRP from here (fastboot flash recovery FILENAME.img).
  2. Reboot into recovery (adb reboot recovery or hold Power+VolDn, then select Recovery).
  3. Flash the latest version of SuperSU.
  4. You should be rooted.

Thanks, Marco.

  • Netanel Silbermintz

4.4.1 Kinda caught everyone a little off-guard in a very positive way :)

The rollout is also happening very quickly, way to go Google!

    Flashing now!!! Thank you.

    • plug

Settings icon in QuickSetting window is slightly changed, has a round to it.

  • Dom

5ghz wifi networks stopped working? Simple fix is to "forget" the network and connect again

  • Michael Sheils

Tried to run it through sideload and got the message back that system/app/EmailGoogle.apk has unexpected contents.

    • http://gplus.to/mbirth Markus Birth

Worked fine for me. Looks like you replaced the (Exchange-)Email app.

      • Michael Sheils

Ah, didn't replace but did freeze it.

  • Rehan Ahmed

Good thing Android 4.4.1 is being dispatched simultaneously on both the Nexuses, the 4 and the 5!
I can't flash it on my 4 right now, please update the article with the change log when you find it.

  • Ryan

hopefully hangouts notifications will begin working again. 4.4 seemed to kill them

    • http://k3rnel.net Juan Rodriguez

Oh, so it wasn't my ROM? Hah. I've been using unofficial CM nightlies and noticed this too.

    • Bob G

      Mine still work... :dunno:

    • Ryan

Mine work for SMS messages, but not for regular hangouts messages. Not receiving my video calls either

    • Matt

I assume you tried wiping app data for Hangouts? I've had no such issue, but I started fresh for 4.4.

      • Ryan

Yup, nothing I seem to do can fix it. All the notifications come flooding in when I open the app, but nothing unless I launch it myself.

        • aerialls

I had the same problem with the update to Android 4.4. Try to desync your Google account and add it again. It worked for me

  • Netanel Silbermintz

They fixed the status bar's transparency being screwed up when you lock the screen with the notification panel down and unlock it! :D

  • Eli Loewen

Looks like the N4 finally gets transparent bars on the lock screen with this update!

    • Bob G

      Without sideloading home.apk?

      • Eli Loewen

Yup. Stock 4.4.1 gets lockscreen transparency, but still no launcher transparency.

        • ddpacino

I think they are still withholding it to work out any necessary kinks before releasing it to all via the Play Store. It seems like they built it specifically for the N5 first. Widgets sort of run up behind the Google Search bar in landscape on the N7.

          • Mario Feghali

Also, on the Nexus 4, the icons are way to big, and the appdrawer size is 4x5 instead of 5x5.

          • Ryuuie

Hey, I LIKE the big icons.

But I have strange old man eyes so it's all good. :v

          • bimsebasse

That's not a bug or an error, that's a feature, and I like it.

          • Bob

you're just used to small icons so that's why they look big... looked ridiculously big to me at first too... try it for a week and they will look totally normal :)

          • cage

            Just flashed the OTA.
But the big icons weren't exist in my case.

            Still 5x5 in my drawer.

          • Raja Torabb

            Me too still 5x5

        • Simon Belmont

Yeah. Probably because the transparency on the lockscreen is separate from the transparency on the homescreen (GEL).

I noticed since I installed GEL on my 2012 N7 running KitKat, I get homescreen transparency, but not lockscreen. So, Google has to code that transparency specifically (lockscreen). Hopefully this is a sign that GEL will be launched in the Google Play Store shortly. Good times.

    • Simon Belmont

      Oh wow. That's great news.

Hopefully this comes with the tablets, too. I've been running GEL on my 2012 N7 without an issue.

    • Matthew Fry

Oh :( Now my Nexus 10 feels really bad.

    • Severo Rivera

    • Carlos Rodríguez

That could mean that GEL could be on the Play Store soon :) (just a theory)

  • Netanel Silbermintz

Just took a picture with the camera and the phone rebooted O.o

    Let's try that again...

Edit: Okay, this time it didn't reboot :P

    • ras

Same here... rebooted inside the camera. The reboot was very peculiar though... the phone vibrated a lot before rebooting.

      • Ishaan Rajiv

Same happened to me. The area around the camera made a weird sound and it rebooted. *crosses finger* Working fine now. Let's hope it doesn't happen again. :)

  • TheSparks

    Have they included GEL?!

    • Nathan

    • JordanMcRae

All you need is to do is sideload the Google Home apk. So easy.

  • Ryan Stewart

Anyone seen the changes? Does this resolve the exchange issue?

  • Captain Canada

N4 running 4.3 with franco kernel and xposed framework > N4 running 4.4.1

    • ddpacino

      Go home. You're drunk.

    • Felipe Priess

mine is running 4.4 with franco kernel and xposed, no problems

      • meijin3

Same set up I have. I'm about to try flash stock kernel and try the OTA.

  • tehone

Is it too much to ask to be pleasantly (OK, shockingly) surprised one of these updates by them unlinking the Notifications/Ringer volumes (i.e. allowing different volumes to be selected for each, on stock ROM)?

    Probably, huh? /sigh

    • ddpacino

Was that an old stock option or a custom ROM option where they used to give you the option to group those two volumes together?

      • tehone

I forget the exact history but IIRC, it used to be in stock Android up until a certain point (Froyo/GB?) and then they inexplicably removed it.

Most custom ROMs re-enable it (as well as the xposed framework stuff) but it'd be nice to have it back in the stock ROM.

  • http://www.dsaif.com/ Saif

You can use "update from phone storage" in the stock recovery to flash the update.

  • letsplaay

As a non-Nexus user, I should really stop reading these KitKat articles.

    • Bob G

Only if you are also a non-new-Moto user.

    • Frederico Silva

You should really stop being a non-Nexus user, too O:)

      • iamover13

    • Alf

:) You'll get one soon enough

  • tehone

My Exchange Email app that was NOT broken on 4.4 (applied via factory image + OTA) is now broken after applying 4.4.1 OTA. Awesome! Ugh.

    • Sings

      This is nonsense kkkkkkkkkkkkkk
apart from that, has anything changed?

  • berkan

I'm getting error flashing zip on twrp recovery. What should i do ?

    • collinpage

Are you side loading because flashing directly from my device worked

      • berkan

now i tried it with CWM and it said libart.so has unexpected contents. i flashed a fix for whatsapp art support.

        • Carlos Rodríguez

Of course it will fail. You need either restore the original libart.so or flash the system.img of the factory image (fastboot flash system system.img). It won't wipe your data.

I had the same problem because I flashed the optimized dalvik and bionic libraries from the Moto X.

          • Eric Goh

Factory image for 4.4.1 isnt out yet....

          • Carlos Rodríguez

I was talking about the 4.4 image (KRT16S). If he flash the system.img from the 4.4 factory image, he can apply the OTA successfully.

          • berkan

i fixed it now, thanks for the info

    • Eric Goh

Same here, having errors while flashing via TWRP...

  • BlackAce15

I see that in the Display settings theres now "Cast Screen" does this work with ChromeCast

    • Simon Belmont

Omg. If that is true, I will jizz my pants.

Literally. Okay, not literally, but I'll be happy.

    • tehone

Yep, help link from that screen links to this article:

Can't test anything yet since I'm at work and no ChromeCast here.

    • BlackAce15

So far can't get it to connect to my Chromecast

    • Ryuuie

No. :( This is Miracast only.

  • Daniel McKenzie J.

I have rooted my Nexus 5. Will I still get the update through 'System Updates' if I am rooted?

    • Daniel

    • http://the-jade-domain.com Jaime J. Denizard

Yes but if you have a custom recovery (which you most likely do since most root instructions tell you to flash one without giving you the option to just boot into it for some godforsaken reason), the OTA will fail. You have to either flash a stock recovery (yay!) or download the OTA yourself and sideload or flash it yourself.

Remember if you choose to sideload the OTA, your system partition needs to be intact.

  • Marian

Flashing a Customer Recovery will wipe device?

    • ibrahim52

nop, if your bootloader is unlocked. If its locked then to unlock it YES your data will be wiped out.

  • Laurent
  • Roderick Gadellaa

Hmm I keep getting "Signature verification failed" with TWRP, 'install from sd' and adb sideload. Downloaded the file 3 times, still nothing..?

    • Pedro Segura Martín

Same problem here, I'm trying to update via adb :(

      • Roderick Gadellaa

Ok I fixed it by flashing the original 4.4 factory image (without wiping the device, remove the '-w' from 'fastboot -w [...]', last line in the flash-all file) and then reboot into recovery, and do adb sideload.

        • ibrahim52

instead of that simply flash SYSTEM.img and BOOT.img and then try installing .zip update through CWM or TWRP. Thanks Roderick

        • Pedro Segura Martín

Yesterday I noticed that the downloaded file was broken, it was 41MB and once I downloaded it again it was 52MB :) Now I'm running 4.4.1 without problems!

  • Nathan

    New smallband version: .98

    • Carlos Rodríguez

Baseband* yes. And a new kernel. :)

  • Random!

I kept my nexus 4 running 4.2 and the version of chrome that comes with it until a week ago, when I accidentally installed the 4.3 OTA. Then I decided to promptly upgrade to 4.4 and update to the latest version of chrome. This is the regret of my life. Now the phone is MUCH slower, laggier, buggier, unloads tabs all the time. It makes me seriously want to downgrade. Anyone else had these issues?

    • subhramani

No issues with 4.4, but Chrome is slow as shit. I'm still trying to find a good replacement for Chrome.

    • Andrew

Good thing Android lets the users downgrade whenever they want. I use Chrome Beta, 0 to minimum issues, it's pretty fast on Android 4.4
I am updating to 4.4.1 as we speak and yeah hopefully no lag or anything of the sort.

      Get Chrome Beta ;)

  • Ryuuie

If I'm not mistaken, the Nexus 4's camera is focusing a LOT faster than what it did on 4.4 (hell, even faster than on what it shipped with).

    • Nathan

I have this feeling as well. Good stuff.

  • Jazavchar

Can anyone confirm if their max GPU frequency on stock kernel is now 200 MHz? I seem to recall it was 400 MHz on 4.4.

  • Dan Carter

I'm noticing a lot less lag. 4.3 added lag in the notification bar for me, especially from the lock screen and that seems to be gone now. Also, with the GEL I would often get lag swiping to the Google Now homescreen. That also seems to be gone.

  • http://www.y8u.org/ Y8u

Remember when there was a rumor of 4.4.1 OTA out of the box that contained 100 GB of Google Drive? Those were the days..... LOL!

  • perhac88

So any camera fixes on the nexus 4?

  • NikhilW

I am on 4.4 and rooted with Twrp, will the steps mentioned above for sideloading work for me?

    • Orhan

Same here. Just downloaded the OTA file on the device and flashed from recovery. Root stays too.

    • Bruno Marangoni

Yes, it will, unless you're using a custom kernel, like I was trying to do =)

  • Bruno Marangoni

Why can't I flash the update? Is it because I'm using Franco Kernel and CWM?

    PS: 4.4 stock here

  • JordanMcRae

Settings icon is the quick settings drawer looks slightly different.

  • Simon Belmont

I just had a new Google Play Store pushed. It's version 4.5.10.

It looks like it shows the star rating for apps in a different way. Pretty cool.

  • JordanMcRae

Hearing rumblings of a new GEL version? Can anyone confirm?

  • Nathan

Seems like the Android-OS wakelock has been fixed.

Will be able to give a definite answer tomorrow morning when I will either find a dead phone or one with some juice left.

    • Nathan

Still not completely fixed. 45m wakelock time overnight. Going back to .48.

  • http://www.LOVEanon.org/ Michael Oghia (Ogie)

Hmm... I've downloaded it 3 times: once from Google and once from the AP mirror using Firefox for Android, and no luck getting it to install. I then tried with the AP mirror on Chrome. Now, I'm trying the Google link on Chrome and will update to let you know if it works.

  • mahssh

I am desperately waiting for an update to fix whatsapp art issue. Does anyone know if whatsapp is working on Art in this one. Please don't tell me flash libart. I don't want to do that..

    • Rick Bosch

      Yes. it does.

  • prakash

Lock screen now have transparent nav bars :) GEL incoming?

  • Adrian Dobre

Nice! Transparent patch no longer needed, opening settings from notification shade on the lockscreen no longer lags (still a bit sluggish when dropping notification shadow on lockscreen when unlock animation hint is happening), but the phone feels faster than 4.4:-)

  • Pele

Tried to sideload got this error
    "system/lib/libart.so" has unexpected content.
    E: Error in /tmp/update.zip (status 7)
    Installation aborted.

    • rori

I had a similar issue. The problem was that I flashed the optimized bionic and dalvik libraries. After I flashed the original factory image for 4.4, I could install the zip without a problem.

    • TOBIAS

same here :( can't get it to work

    • Tom

Are you running the Xposed framework? Mine wouldn't sideload without uninstalling that beforehand. Worked fine once that was out the way however.

  • Zodiak

Update your Galaxy Nexus to Android 4.4 right here!!! http://goo.gl/ZsPkli

  • Priyanka Bhattacharya

did't get ota update in india 4.4.1 :(

  • Nathan

They put a circle in the settings icon.

  • Anon

What do I do if my Nexus is on KRT16M ? I just got the phone from Google last week and haven't seen any othe r updates.

Is KRT16S later than KRT16M ? Seems like a catch-22 if I need KRT16S to get the OTA or to download and apply this new 4.4.1 update

  • Guest

I'm getting a "Signature verification failed" with TWRP. Please help!

    • http://www.prettygeeky.com/ Socaltyger

I tried flashing in twrp several times, kept getting the same error. Then used Nexus Toolkit from Wugfresh and restored stock recovery. Booted up and installed update via adb sideload. worked. Yay. Nexus 4 with 4.4.1 now.

  • Борислав Димитров

When i see the android with red exclamation point and press Vol. Up + Power the device just boots into Android ?

  • Ádám Blazevic

Hi Guys! Am I right if I think I won't need a factory reset in case of an OTA upgrade (4.4 = > 4.4.1)?

  • zanza

cant sideload with twrp. it says "zip signature verification failed". but the md5 hash is ok. whats wrong here?

  • Anmol Verma

from stock recovery getting signature verification failed on adb sideload!!!

  • Ankur Gupta

This update is for signed-occam-KOT49E-from-KRT16S but what if running mako nexus 4 4.4
