The Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition started its Android 4.4 update yesterday, a little later than many of its owners would have liked. For those who are eager to get KitKat on their expensive AOSP phones and don't want to wait for the rollout, we've got a download link for the manual OTA update ZIP file.

Those of you who are Nexus veterans know how this goes: download the file on your PC and use ADB to reboot into recovery, copy the file over, and then flash it. Alternately you can download it directly to your phone, though the file is over 250MB, so you may want to hop onto a handy WiFi network for speed or data limit considerations. (We don't have a GPE device handy for a full guide, so check your favorite user forum if you need precise instructions.)

If you've already unlocked and rooted your phone, you can flash the file via the custom recovery of your choice.

Will this work for a sprint S4?

    • chenxiaolong

No. This is not a full OTA (ie. It patches existing files to the latest versions). You'll have to wait for someone to repackage the ROM.

This is a full OTA. You meant to say that this is not a full ROM.

        • chenxiaolong

Sorry, yeah that's what I meant.

          • Maurice “Reese” Ellis

How did you get it on your sgh-m919?

  • Alessandro Casagli

noob question: can I flash this file to my AT&T Touchwiz version of the Samsung Galaxy S4?

What if you use Loki doki?

  • Stanley Chan

Look on XDA, only in i9505G models.

    Whait for a custom rom.

  • KEL

I always rely on OTAs but I've decided to be impatient this time: So all I have to do on my S4 GPE's browser is navigate to that .zip link, download it and install as I would an .apk?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

No, that's not how you install OTAs. You need to flash this from recovery.

  • Danny Ventura

so what do you do when you install it do you uses clockwork and does it write over your current firmware so that you don't need to reinstall apps also my device is rooted

  • Alin Ruptureanu

Will this also work with i9505 Samsung ? I mean the phone isn't GPE, but now it has GPE 4.3 on it.

    • Viktor Velkov

      Same question here!

    • brandon

      I tried and it doesn't work :(

  • The Needlemouse

Man, I feel pure hate against Samsung sitting on Galaxy S3 LTE with 4.1.2

  • miso_sori

Sorry if this has already been answered and I missed it. Would one be able to flash this rom onto a AT&T S4 for instance and work normally as well as enabling Google Wallet?

  • Alan Clarke

I installed gpe on my I9505 ..I had over the air kitkat but it wouldn't install with twerp so I'm sure this won't work either

  • rohail6

Anybody know if you're supposed to get the google experience launcher? I didn't get it.

    does this void the warranty?

  • rohail6
