Chromecast-Thumb

Google would love for you to put a Nexus 7 under someone's tree this holiday season, but they also don't want anyone who can't part with $229+ at the moment to feel left out - so they're now offering customers who purchase a Chromecast from Google Play with a free HD movie rental. If Play Movies isn't quite your cup of tea, you're also free to take $6 in Play Store credit instead. You can then spend that money however you like, except on devices or subscriptions.

ChromecastOffer

Like Google's Nexus 7 offer, this deal expires on March 31st, and the free credit must be accepted by that date or it goes to waste. Sure, we're only talking about six bucks here, but it would still be a shame to see that happen. And lastly, this offer is only valid in the US.

Update: It looks like purchases made on Amazon and at Best Buy are eligible as well. Here's what Google has to say about the logistics of receiving promo codes:

I have a question about the Google Play Holiday promotion.

If you purchased your Chromecast from the Google Play Store, Amazon or Best Buy during the Google Play Holiday promotional period, your promotional code will be emailed to you from the retailer once your Chromecast is shipped. If you purchased your Chromecast from a Best Buy retail store during the promotional period, your promotional code will be printed on your receipt.

If you are having trouble redeeming your promotional code, please contact us here or call us at 1-855-466-4438.

Chromecast in the Play Store

Bertel King, Jr.
Born and raised in the rural South, Bertel knows what it's like to live without 4G LTE - or 3G, for that matter. The only things he likes sweeter than his tea are his gadgets, and while few objects burn more than a metal phone on a summer day, he prefers them that way anyway.

I would certainly buy one if they were sold outside of the US...

    • Michael Pahl

      Good to know......

  • hurrpancakes

Probably best to wait for Black Friday and get a Chromecast from Amazon for $30, because of free shipping and no tax in some states. Or if you're a student (or used to be with access to an edu email address), you can get it from Best Buy for that same price.

    • TSON1

Or if you have a corporate discount for Verizon, it's the same.

    • ChavaM

Meh, it's $5. I picked one up the other night on my way to my gf's house. She wanted to watch a Netflix movie on her laptop and instead we used the Chromecast.

All i have to say is that I am not sure they are even worth having.. We have one and but my TV can do everything it offers to do... I thought by now they would of added more functionality to it... I mean it works with 3 or 4 apps. yea yea.. It does not even let the Browser pop screens work.. so if I get a webcast that comes up I can move it to the TV.. I am not sure of the Use for it yet...

    • SickoPsycho

I love my chromecast. Its so convenient for watching all the best epic cat fails on Youtube on my TV (which is oldschool without youtube) and I can control which epic cat fail videos I watch from my phone or cue them from a laptop. =)

I have a Samsung Smart TV and 2 Chromecasts, and I much prefer to use my phone, then cast to the TV as it's much faster to use the apps than to navigate the Smart TV menus.

Once Google drops the whitelist and many apps (or even entire OSes, like CM) will support casting, it'll be much more valuable. But even now, I find it excellent already.

      • Asphyx

Yes but at this point unless it's Hulu, Netflix or YouTube there is not all that much you can stream to your TV...
Certainly nothing Local and you would think at MINIMUM they would have included a DLNA player into the unit so you could send content to it from other sources.

Rumor has it local content won't be allowed until after they drop the SDK for chromecast into the public.

Plex is contributing to the development it has been reported.

    • Luxferro

I boxed up both mine. Until they let devs create apps they're useless to me. WTB Plex for chromecast.

    • Aaron Berlin

I have a Chromecast and a Google TV, and it's a fantastic study in contrast. The GTV is literally the platform that tries to answer all of the real problems with TV, can run apps, etc, but it's frankly a nightmare for less tech-literate people to use. The Chromecast doesn't even have a remote control and it's a complete pleasure to use and immediately accessible. Yet, once Google opens up the public API, it will be nearly as flexible and as powerful as the Google TV, because it's making much, much better use of the powerful device you're already carrying.

I really hope this hits the UK soon - - kind of annoying when all this stuff is only relevant to the US... We have money to spend too ;) !!!

Wonder if anyone has gotten the code printed on their receipt. I bought a chromecast from a Best Buy last night and there wasn't a code printed on the receipt.

      • thakrisp

same here its deffinetally not on there

        • Hien

Have you received the code by email? What is the format?

          • thakrisp

i have yet to receive anything besides a survey

      • Hien

Same here. No code on the receipt.

      • mrSkippo

No code on my receipt either. I wonder how many people actually bought it not realizing that they're supposed to receive a code. I'm going to head back to best buy and see what bs they give me.

  • clifton stillman

good deal specially for a free movie

  • Martin Arnold

Wish it was available in the UK! Getting fed up of the US only deals

  • TheDrunkenClam

I JUST bought one yesterday 11/25 at Best Buy. Can I get this?

    • Dissidence

I'd assume that if you contacted Google, they would most likely give you a code. Otherwise, you could always just return the one you bought and rebuy it to get the code.

  • sssgadget

Movie rental. Which sucks. If they were giving away a free movie to own then that would make it sweet.

  • david coffey

It'd be nice if us early adopters got benefits. Christ, free shipping would be dandy.

  • Jooyoung Hong

I literally got chromecast 6 days ago from Amazon...

  • thisisjnn

What's not clear to me is - what's the Google Play Holiday promotional period? I purchased 2 Chromecasts from Amazon on Monday, and are due to deliver today. I've not received a code.....

  • somerset

I am in the UK....got mine from amazon the other day.....I am impressed with the picture quality....

This deal ended at BestBuy the day before Black Friday. The BestBuy version of this promotion was just for the 27th and 28th. A BestBuy manager showed me a very official looking card (thick stock) for BBY employees -- it was printed with an official Google and Chromecast logo that definitely said the promotional period was the 27th and 28th.

So please update your post so people don't go to BestBuy and be disappointed when their receipt doesn't have a promo code.
