It seems like a lot of folks can't watch TV without a phone in their hand, which makes the newest update to the DIRECTV app that much more useful. As the changelog points out, remote control functionality has been at the top of everyone's wishlist, and now it's here.

This update actually adds several ways to manage your DIRECTV receiver from the app. Here's the changelog straight from DIRECTV:

  • The #1 requested feature is finally here- now control your receiver using your Android phone.
  • Use your phone as a remote control
  • Tap to tune in to any show on your TV from your phone.
  • View, playback, and delete items from your Playlist. Control & playlist requires you to be on the same Wi-Fi network as your DVR.

You'll need to be on the same WiFi network as your DVR to get these features to work. The same goes for all the streaming features – they won't work if you're on a different AP or using mobile data. The update is live, so go get it.

Seems a bit silly. You would think that if youre in your own home, you can use the remote that came with it...but i guess it adds convenience by consolidating the function to one place.

When you can't find the remote, the DirecTV remote apps are great (there's a few of them in the wild). Our couch has a voracious appetite.

When you want to prank your Permanent Roomate, this is great.

When you have to share the remote, or it's across the room, or you just want another Cool Thing to do with your phone, these are great.

DirecTV subscribers should already have this app just to be able to schedule recordings while on the road ("Oops, I won't make it home for kickoff!") so this is a nice addition for an app that's likely already on your phone. And may allow you to ditch a current free app that keeps nagging you to Rate This App despite having rated it previously.

Already found a bug lol. On the galaxy S3 there is a remote icon next to the magnifying glass on the top right. On my phone the galaxy s4 and apparently the one in the photos above there is no remote icon. I have looked through the settings and can't seem to find another way to this functionality.

On the galaxy s3 the remote icon exposes additional traditional remote buttons. Channel up /down, dvr lists, etc.
