Apps

Helpouts

Android Police coverage: [New App] Google Helpouts Is Now Live - Video Chat With Experts From Android Or Chrome

Helpouts has been a long time coming, but now that it's available, you won't find Android wanting for an applicable app. Most of the current offerings are fairly simple live video sessions for instruction in everything from guitar lessons to tech support, with integrated payments right in the app. The app itself is typically Google: attractive, if a little Spartan. As usual, support outside of the US is spotty at best this soon after the service launch.

--

Helpouts connects people who need help with people who can give help over live video. Download the Helpouts app today to get help across multiple topics with your mobile device anytime, anywhere

CyanogenMod Installer

Android Police coverage: [New App] CyanogenMod Installer Hits Google Play To Bring A Custom ROM To The Masses [Update: Desktop Client Is Live]

The CyanogenMod team is trying their darndest to extend an already impressive userbase, and the CM installer is the first step in accomplishing that laudable goal. Combined with the Windows desktop client, this step-by-step guide will get you running everyone's favorite custom ROM faster than you can say Jack Robinson. Naturally device support is limited to those phones and tablets that have CM builds and fairly straightforward root and unlock methods - mostly Nexus and Samsung devices at the moment.

--

Dayframe is an app that makes your tablet one of those WiFi digital photo frames.... wait, come back! It's way more interesting than it sounds. Instead of showing pictures of your boring family, the app pulls down photos from Instagram, Tumblr, Flickr and the like (and fine, it can show local images too) for beautiful and category-driven slideshow. A ton of power and customization features round out the app, and it can even work as a rudimentary launcher if you use your tablet as a desktop mini-display.

--

Dayframe turns your device into a fun and powerful new photo frame. Dayframe works with your favorite photo sharing services to provide a ongoing slideshow of friends, family, and interests. Browse and share photos between Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Google+, Dropbox, Flickr, Twitter, 500px, and more. Dayframe is designed to automatically play when you’re not using your device. SolCalendar - Android Calendar

Android Police coverage: [Hands-on] SolCalendar, A Calendar For Those Who Love Pastels And Playful Widgets

SolCalendar is a beautiful alternative to the standard Android/Google calendar, and not just because of its functional interface or pastel color scheme. This app actually makes good use of the cutesy sticker feature, letting you easily spot important days and events at a glance. Even the homescreen widget (an essential for any calendar app) is drop-dead gorgeous. Not a Google Calendar user? No fear: the app will sync with any CalDev compatible platform.

--

SeatGeek Event Tickets

Android Police coverage: SeatGeek Comes To Android, Scours The Internet To Help You Find Event Tickets On The Cheap

SeatGeek is sort of the Kayak of event apps - it scours eBay, StubHub, and TicketsNow for seats at sporting events, concerts, and what have you. Even better, it includes the location of wherever the ticket is (assuming that the seating chart for the venue is available), which is something that even the best sites have yet to master. All in all, it's a great place to start if you're looking for aftermarket tickets... though you might give your local Craigslist hub a gander as well.

--

SeatGeek is a search engine for tickets that scours hundreds of websites at once – from big sites like StubHub, TicketsNow and eBay down to individual brokers – to help you find the absolute best deals on sports, concert and live events. SeatGeek ranks all ticket deals with a 1-to-100 Deal Score, so you can quickly find the tickets with the most bang for your buck. SeatGeek's interactive seating charts make it easy to pick exactly where you’d like to sit, and the app's view-from-seat photos let you know exactly what you’ll see when you get to the event.

FCC Speed Test

Android Police coverage: [New App] FCC Speed Test App Hits Google Play, Helps You Keep An Eye On Your Carrier

Yeah, yeah, giving information over to the government might seem a little ill-advised given current events. But this app is specifically designed to give the FCC an accurate picture of voice and data coverage across the country and on all relevant carriers, which is surely something I can get behind. ("Fair" coverage does not mean zero bars, T-Mobile.) You can also track your own results. If you're wondering, the app only polls your signal and data speed, with no personal information sent to the Commission.

--

What does it do? The FCC Speed Test app accurately measures your mobile broadband performance and displays an in-depth view of its factors (e.g. download and upload speed, latency, and packet loss). Why download it? Learn about your mobile broadband performance in one click. Track it over time. What about privacy? No personally-identifiable information is collected whatsoever. Testing is totally anonymous.

Google Opinion Rewards

Android Police coverage: [New App] Google Opinion Rewards Pays Google Play Credit To Android Users In The US Willing To Answer A Few Questions

Excuse me sir, do you have time to answer a few questions to help us improve our website? Of course you don't. That's why Google likes to incentivize user feedback with good old-fashioned money. Not a lot, mind you - it's not as if answering a few consumer-oriented questions requires a degree or anything - but you can earn a few bucks of Google Play credit by answering some short, targeted questions via this single-purpose app.

--

Answer quick surveys and earn Google Play credits with Google Opinion Rewards, an app created by Google Consumer Surveys. Getting started is easy. Download the app and answer answer basic questions about yourself. About once a week you'll get a notification on your phone that a short and relevant survey is ready for you. Questions will range from, "Which logo is best?" and "Which promotion is most compelling?" to "When do you plan on traveling next?"

LEGO® TV

Android Police coverage: [New App] LEGO TV Arrives In The Play Store, Provides Fans With A Portable Selection Of Hilarious Animated Movies

If you're a parent, you probably know that Lego's empire is not limited to toys. They've expanded into video games, clothing, and even direct-to-video movies. Surprisingly, Lego is now allowing kids to watch these videos for free (though really it's just a wrapper for the YouTube channel). Got a long car trip on the horizon? No problem - the app lets you download videos to local storage. Because playing with real Legos in the back seat is asking for a lost 2x3.

--

Watch your favorite LEGO® movies directly on your device. This app allows you to watch LEGO movies in both online and offline mode. You can download your favorite LEGO movies to your device and watch them whenever you like.

This app features two main areas:
- LEGO Movies streamed from the official LEGO YouTube Channel
- LEGO Movies for download to your device

Streambels AirPlay/DLNA Player

Non-compatible standards suck. Streambels makes them suck a little bit less, at least if the ones you're using are AirPlay or DLNA. The app will stream audio or video to any DLNA or AirPlay receiver (including AppleTV), along with XBMC and Raspbmc. If that's not enough, it's also got a fantastic interface, complete with a handful of themes. You can stream video from YouTube or Facebook, but everything else will need to be stored locally.

--

Stream local and online music, videos and photos from your Android to any AirPlay or DLNA device. Streambels beams the media content in the same way as the Apple AirPlay, making it fully compatible with AirPlay wireless speakers such as Bose, Sony, Pure, Denon, Pioneer and others. The app works smoothly with Apple TV, AirPort Express and any other AirPlay-enabled devices. With integrated DLNA support you can stream freely to Samsung TVs, Sony TVs, LG TVs, Xiaomi Box and other DLNA-enabled popular receivers.

Drink Advisor

The nightlife scene is in constant flux in any major city - services like Yelp are built on helping users to navigate the shifting waters of adult entertainment. Drink Advisor takes out the community component and offers semi-professional advice for bars and clubs in over 120 cities. An appropriately trendy UI and the usual social sharing tools help augment the experience. Low on funds? No worries - Drink Advisor includes cocktail recipes for a night in.

--

Snapy, The Floating Camera

It's hard to imagine a scenario where taking a photo doesn't demand your full attention, or at least your full screen. But if you frequently find yourself in need of a snapshot without closing another app, then Snapy is for you. You can move the floating camera window around and resize it if necessary. Launch it from a floating icon, notification, or shortcut, and you'll never need to close... whatever else it is that you're doing.

--

meet SNAPY, THE FLOATING CAMERA.

Never miss a big moment again, it has never been that easy...

A FLOATING CAMERA?
SNAPY can be launched from any app or game, at anytime, with just a single tap. SNAPY is a resizable, movable & adjustable camera that's always there.

WHY FLOATING CAMERA?
Launch snapy with one tap. That's it. Playing a game while the baby makes it's first steps? It's alright. Snap it with SNAPY. On the phone while a cute dog passes by? No problem.. Snap it with SNAPY. Writing an email & all of a sudden there's an alien invasion?! It's OK. Snap it with SNAPY.

500 Firepaper

This app replaces your static Android wallpaper with a rotating selection of entries on 500px. If you want something interesting behind your icons and widgets without the battery-draining drawback of a live wallpaper, this is it. The settings let you set an update interval, but unfortunately, 500px terms will keep you from saving individual pictures or keeping the same wallpaper for more than one day.

--

500 Firepaper provides a live wallpaper and a daydream showing you the latest images from 500px throughout the day. You never need to look at that boring old wallpaper again, or search for hours for a nice new one. This app will show you quality photographs from all over the world - different ones each day. The feature (popular, editor's choice, fresh, etc) and categories displayed are of course configurable, as is the refresh interval and the brightness of the images.

Sleep Genius: + Revive Alarm

SleepGenius aims to help you fall asleep quickly and stay asleep longer. I don't know if their claims of scientifically-tuned noise holds any water, but the app delivers the features that a lot of people swear by and some nifty power nap and timed alarm functions as well. Early reviews are positive, so I'd be willing to venture a buck on a download.

--

Decades of sleep research have produced a sleep app that's better than white noise and other natural sleeping aids. The proprietary algorithms in Sleep Genius actually help your brain get ready for sleep, guide your brain through each stage in the sleep cycle, and wake you with a gentle, refreshing alarm. Perfect if you have anxiety or stress and struggle winding down before bed, can’t sleep, suffer from sleep deprivation, or just looking for a better quality sleep.

Bundlr

Bundlr is yet another take on the alternative news engine, this time revolving around "clips" - basically, series of links to videos and stories. It's a sort of mix between a Twitter-powered reader and a bookmark app. Whether it's necessary or indeed useful is debatable, but at least the app is clean and functional. Naturally there's a large selection of sharable options for each user.

--

Bundlr is a new and free tool to collect everything about your favorite topics. Bring together photos, videos, tweets and documents on the go. Share them with everyone.

  • Create bundles about your favorite topics
  • Clip content to your bundles by copying the URL from Safari
  • Manage the content you have on bundlr.com
  • Share clips on social networks or by sms and mail

Each bundle has its own public webpage, accessible on bundlr.com

SquareHub

Some of us prefer to avoid our immediate family on social networks (no, Mom, I'm not friending you back) but it's hard to deny the advantages therein. For that extremely specific user scenario, there's SquareHub, a social network designed just for families. It's more like a refrigerator whiteboard than anything else, with messages, posts, and announcements catered towards family planning. A people-tracker feature is a nice bonus for parents.

--

SquareHub is the private social network that makes everyday communication fun and functional for everyone in your family. Send private messages and photos, coordinate activities, manage schedules, and share those spontaneous moments of joy with just your family. Whether you’re a family with young kids, mobile teenagers, kids away at college, or you’re a family living in multiple locations, SquareHub makes it easy for everyone in your family to stay connected.

Poshmark - Buy & Sell Fashion

Imagine Poshmark as a sort of Swappa for clothes. As someone who shops exclusively from the Sam Walton collection, my duds probably aren't worth any more than the change in my pocket, but those of you with more discriminating tastes might be able to sell more lucrative clothing and accessories. The app lets you list items without a PC, and naturally you can buy things as well.

--

Poshmark is a fun and simple way to buy and sell fashion. Shop the closets of women across America - and sell yours too. Ever wish you could shop a fashion lover's closet? Now you can. Poshmark connects you to people whose style you adore, allowing you to shop their closets anytime you’d like. Best part? Scoring awesome deals on great merchandise. Sell them on Poshmark in a just a few clicks.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

When it comes to wholesome family entertainment, you can't do much better than good ol' Charlie Brown. The Thanksgiving version of Loud Crow's well-known children's book apps includes the typically scenes from the classic TV special, with a more video-focused take on the activities and reading. A "For Parents" area lets you adjust settings without worrying about what the kids can get into.

--

“Where’s the turkey, Chuck?” This holiday season, join Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang around the table for a (very.) unique Thanksgiving dinner. From pilgrims to popcorn, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving comes to life in this beautifully re-mastered 40th anniversary edition. Magically marrying a book-like feel with clever interactive elements, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving will leave your senses hungry for a second helping.

Strangebeard - Pirate Princess

Yet another kid-focused book app. This one's a mix of the typical pop-up book elements, "follow the bouncing ball" reading assistance, and a few activities and mini-games thrown in for good measure. With more than a few of you set for long road trips next week, you might want to pick up a few of these for the ride to help keep law and order in the back seat.

--

Aha me hearties. Ready for a swashbuckling adventure? When Isabel the Princess goes to a party dressed as a pirate, she starts on an incredible, action-packed adventure filled with pirate galleons, fearsome monsters and fruit-flinging monkeys. Release your inner pirate with adventurous mini-games: piece together treasure maps, dance a pirate jig, then show off your sword skills with some fancy pirate fightin’.

Motorola FM Radio

Android Police coverage: [New App] Motorola Continues To Add Stock Apps To Play Store, Now FM Radio For The Moto G

The Moto G is made with the budget user in mind, and thus includes an FM radio (which wouldn't be out of place in high-end phones, by the way) as an alternative to streaming music. As with most of the company's other custom apps, they've released it to the Play Store to more easily facilitate regular updates.

--

Listen to your favorite FM radio stations for free on your Moto G. Motorola FM Radio makes it easy to scan for stations, build your favorites list, and see live information about what’s playing -- all with a simple swipe-based navigation. I downloaded SolCalendar, but still haven't tried it yet. I'm almost scared to, since I still haven't pinpointed what the effing crap is crashing my calendar database.

  • https://play.google.com/store/search?q=kodiak+211 Google_Is_The_Higgs_Boson

PlayStation app... It's garbage... Sry, I hate it that you have to shop from the browser, and not from the app... You also had to sign into the app from the browser... i take this as a half a$$ developing job... Not only that, the mobile website the app takes you too, is buggy... Really bad experience with this app... they could do so much more with it... First everything from in side the app, Shop, redeem codes, I feel there should be some kind of QR code reader for gift cards... The app should make everything easier with your PSN account... I really see no reason to have the app...

    • http://www.baronsofbullshit.com/ seriosbrad

It also doesn't have the drawing mode for the PS4 AR Bots in the Playroom, which is shown being used all over youtube and even jimmy fallon. False advertising.

      • https://play.google.com/store/search?q=kodiak+211 Google_Is_The_Higgs_Boson

        Haven't seen that in action...

  • http://twitter.com/anishbhalerao Anish Bhalerao

Yo AP, you removed the Play Store links for all apps, and put up PlayBoard links instead...
    Yeah, bad idea.

    • PointZeroOne

agreed, the playboard links are terrible I'm having to copy/paste the app names into the play store.

      • Logic

Seriously? How hard is it to click on the big green rectangle with the google play logo on it? Sheesh.

        • PointZeroOne

I would if they were showing up for me, maybe something has changed and they're being blocked by the antitracking plugin I'm using.

Edit: Nope, disabled antitracking and adblock and the play store links do not show up like they used to, only the playboard link.

          • Arthur Dent

Nice ... using Adblock on AP? FAIL. You do know the FREE site makes no money when people block all of the ads, right? How do you expect sites like these to stay in operation if you block the ads?

I'll admit, I do use AB+, but I disable it for sites like AP and others (especially the little guys) that I visit every day and that I value the free service they provide quite a bit.

          • Matthew Fry

Yeah, I realized the error of my ways a while back and unblocked. Although, I don't really click any of these ads but hopefully the fact that they're there gives them something.

    • Al McDowall

If you click on the green rectangle with the Play Store icon and the word "Install " inside it, it takes you to the Play Store.

      • http://twitter.com/anishbhalerao Anish Bhalerao

Bro, do you even DIRECT LINK?

        • EaseofUse

          Um. Wow.

      • DirkBelig

Yeah, and the link to the Play Store says "FREE" but of the apps I checked out, they were actually 99 cents. They should list in the write-ups whether they're free, paid, or freemium.

        • Matthew Fry

That's a valid concern and AP should take that up with playboard.

    • Josh C

Agree with Al, simply click the green install/buy button. No need to copy paste.

      • http://twitter.com/anishbhalerao Anish Bhalerao

On a limited access server (like on an Office Internet Gateway, as in this case), it makes a MAJOR DIFFERENCE.
Now where is the GREEN BUTTON everyone talks about?

        • PointZeroOne

This is exactly what I'm seeing as well.

Although I'm on a different network today, I can now see they're playboard widgets, playboard is blocked on the other network I use.

  • Rohan Shankar

I always look forward to these posts! You always post such quality apps.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed this time..

Also, too many US only apps.. Look forward to the next app roundup

  • squiddy20

Anyone been "approved to answer surveys" for Google Opinion Rewards? Filled out the initial survey a day (or maybe less) after the AP article was posted, and I'm still "unapproved".

    • Josh C

I was approved and have already earned $3 in play credit.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Yup, got 2 paid surveys so far.

      Nothing here either. Seems random.

    • runderekrun

FYI it didn't work when I was running a custom rom (PA 3.99) but when I switched to stock Kit Kat, I was approved instantly.

I'm on CM 10.2 and my girlfriend is running AOKP and we both got in.

I signed up when the app was under 5,000 downloads and she did in the evening of that day. We both got in at the same time a couple of days later, so perhaps its in waves if it does have something to do with custom ROMs.

        For what it's worth I'm at $0 and she's gotten 3 for a total of $2.95.

Instantly, really? I did it on 4.3 Sense 5 and it took a couple days for approval. Maybe they're secretly targeting KitKat users for some upcoming purpose.

I got one very political one and one about a service I don't use.

Question 1/6: How often do you use x?
      Answer: uh... what's that?
Thank you for your time, here's 25 cents.

    • DirkBelig

I've taken three surveys, getting $1 each from the first two and 25 cents from the third when I washed out on the first question. I just wish they'd send me more surveys.

I used the CyanogenMod Installer program/app on 2 AT&T phones yesterday, and its amazing how easy the process is. Though I am not sure how you update them after you have done so as they do not have the normal Cyanogen updates option in the menu like a more manually installed ROM. I assume you would have to run the installer again, or something..

I would recommend it to anyone though that would be interested in a more true Android experience that might be living in the bloaty Touchwiz, or other worlds out there.

Anyone else have *all* of the youtube videos start playing as soon as the page loaded?

I find this offensive: "If you've been living under a rock for the last couple of weeks, Sony has released a shiny new PlayStation."

I don't give two shits about PS, that doesn't mean I live under a rock.

    • Sean Fitz

If that offends you, you must be living under a rock.

    • Alex Constantinides

Whether you care about it or not, you most likely are aware of the new Playstation, if you are, then the term "If you've been living under a rock" won't apply to you.

      Under-rock dweller detected.

      What a sad story

    • Arthur Dent

Don't let that rock hold you down, man. Fight the power!

    • Guest

Is English not your first language? Those "living under a rock" would be people who somehow managed to not know the PlayStation 4 launched, not people who know but don't care.

You may want to take a dietary supplement for that irony deficiency of yours.

FYI: Camera Awesome added external SD support, so it's worth buying now. However, I just discovered that it doesn't support exposure lock on the Note3. Kept it for the 5-second video pre-buffer feature though.
