AT&T is continuing to push its LTE network into more places as it races to catch Verizon, which got a head start in the LTE era. Today Ma Bell has announced 14 new markets with 4G LTE access. Is your town among them? Only one way to find out.

2013-11-06 09_20_40-about.att.com_content_dam_snrdocs_4g_evolution_infographic.pdf

Here are the new markets direct from AT&T:

  • Fairbanks Metropolitan Area, AK
  • Galesburg, IL
  • Macomb, IL
  • Peoria, IL
  • Des Moines, IA
  • Madisonville, KY
  • Maysville, KY
  • Cumberland, MD
  • St. Cloud, MN
  • St. Joseph, MO
  • Roanoke Rapids, NC
  • Gettysburg, PA
  • Big Spring, TX
  • Winchester, VA

How about that? All the way up in Alaska. AT&T expects to have finished most of its 4G LTE rollout by next summer, which should cover everyone currently blanketed by AT&T 3G. Onward to the future, and all that.

Great news for anybody going prepaid and that has access to ATT's LTE.

Like Straight Talk! Can't wait to switch in December when my contract with Verizon is up and Nexus 5 is (hopefully) back in stock.

      • Scott

I'm in the same boat. I tried straight talk back when the Nexus 4 first came out, but my house didn't have very good voice coverage at all. I'm moving in under 2 weeks and I'd like to test it out again because I believe it'll be better (according to the ATT coverage map.) I take it your also a VZW galaxy nexus owner from the beginning?

Still nothing in Indiana besides major cities.

Of course. Att & Verizon now both have 4G networks in Des Moines, but Sprint (my carrier, unfortunately) is still on 3G.

    • Scott

Sprint might be good... in 2 more years.

      • HotInEER

They said that 5 years ago. LOL That's the problem with Sprint, it's always 2 more years.

    • Caleb Kester

After growing up in the Des Moines area I know how that feels. One can hope we'll get it eventually.

250 million? I'd like to see a source.

"Nearly 250 million people covered by AT&T 4G LTE"

From the wording in the infographic it looks like this is probably the sum of the population of all the cities covered by AT&T's LTE. This most likely is not 250 million customers. With 461 markets I can see that easily being 250 million people.

Peoria, IL!!! Yay!!! Just in time for me to give the finger to Verizon and switch to GoPhone with a Nexus 5.

    • DigginmyN5

I just gave big red the finger tonight myself! I got a Sim card kit from Walmart straight talk and used the att card for my new Nexus 5. Took 5 minutes online..... Full LTE and only $45/mo vs $60 for gophone. Unlimited voice/text/data but the first 2.5gb is LTE then you get throttled until the start of next billing cycle if you go over 2.5gb. If you can live with that it's a heck of a deal. My N5 on att is sweeeet!!!!!

      • Remington

This true but with goPhone you can roam to a certain degree. Still I think straight talk is a better option, especially if you sign up for autopay it knocks off $5 off your monthly bill which is already low.

Just showed up here yesterday, kept losing 3g/4g data all day Tuesday and when I got fed up and switched airplane mode on/off the LTE banner showed right up. Been consistent ever since, ~6mb down/3.5mb up. Maybe it's time to call the cable company and tell them to frack off (if only I didn't have a stupid 3Gb cap on AT&T).

    • challenge_accepted

Same. Showed up last week. They work fast. Covered a 15 mile road in about a week. Too bad i only get 1 bar of LTE in my house now vs full bars of HSPA+. Hopefully that tower is upgraded.

  • HotInEER

Still no LTE in Frederick, MD. Only Verizon does right now. The 2nd largest city in MD can't get any love. SMH

    • Jake

I live in frederick and started getting LTE in most of frederick about a week ago. It's a bit slow but I think its in its testing stage. Speeds have picked up over the last two days.

      • HotInEER

Where in Frederick Jake? I just tried and no signal, and I was out near Rt 85 and 40 yesterday with no LTE, tested on my Nexus 5, the wife's S3 and daughters iPhone 5c.

  • topgun966

Yay, their rushed build out of the first gen LTE. Meanwhile, Sprint and TMo are building out their next gen capable LTE networks. They can be upgraded by firmware updates to their towers VS ATT and VZW will have to replace their towers .... opps.

What is the total number of markets? And when is the projected date to get to all of them?
