We're used to seeing Dropbox space bonuses on various Android phones and tablets, but Google Drive is out there with some free byte promos too. Owners of the HTC One and One Max will be tickled to know they may be eligible for some extra cloud storage through a new Google-HTC deal. There are a few caveats, though

The HTC One Max will grant users an extra 50GB of Drive space for two years – this appears to be for all versions of the device, but it's a little sketchier with the regular One. When HTC One devices are upgraded to Sense 5.5 (like today's international update), there should be a notification in the Drive app as well as in BlinkFeed. It may list 40GB of space, which is the 15GB default, plus the 25GB of free space. Keep in mind the Developer Edition HTC One isn't included, and you cannot redeem the offer on a device with an unlocked bootloader.

If you think you'll go around to multiple devices and get tons of storage, think again. You can only get the free space once per account/device. The promo has to be redeemed by January 1, 2016 – you'll just have to squeeze it into your schedule.

ALMOST worth re-locking the bootloader on my One.............

    • Dazrin

      Re-lock, get the space, unlock...

Will this mess with TWRP and stuff? Will it wipe my s-off?

        • http://www.Nave360.com Sebastian Gorgon

          Nothing can wipe your S-OFF

          • DrM

Actually, sometimes it's possible. The first that comes to mind is the Incredible S. I'd wait for some reports before upgrading.

Relocked my bootloader and it still doesn't apply to my device

No chance of getting 4.3/ Sense 5.5 by 2016 on Verizon...

  • HashTagHell

Why no extra space for devices purchased directly from Google Play? Wouldn't that make "Sense"? (pun intended)

    • Hans Pedersen

I think they're trying to drive the consumers towards their own firmware.

  • tehcypress

why are they blocking out people with unlocked boot loaders?

    • challenge_accepted

I have an unlocked bootloader running Google Play edition rom so I'm mad but it could be because they don't want people just changing roms and getting the space on multiple accounts.

  • anon

I think if you flash a rom which is a port from these devices you can get the offer. Atleast it worked for me (on dropbox) when using a HTC one sense 5 rom on a droid dna.

    • Lalit Mali

Not available for devices with unlocked bootloaders.

  • jamesfuston

"the Developer Edition HTC One isn't included." That made me cringe a little.

  • Erstam

Can you still change your android id to another phone to get the free storage? Have done that a year or so a go.

  • mateorod

I guess I should already know this, but how are they testing for unlocked bootloaders? The ramdisk has the insecure boot.img 1 or 0, but that doesn't mean unlocked.

I have never had to use that, I was just wondering what they might be testing for.

I bet it'll probably be quite some time before the T-Mobile One gets the 5.5 update. I was under the impression the 4.3 update had 5.5 but it does not.

what happens after 2yrs? I assume you cannot add new content but access what's already there?

In 2 years 50GB or more will probably be the free base amount for most cloud storage.

No love for the One X. Again.

  • Adriano Corte Real

If I wasn't happy with Dropbox I'd consider relocking my bootloader, flashing a sense ROM onto my One, getting the free spacer and then relocking and going back to AOSP. However I am pretty happy with Dropbox so no thanks.
