It's been a long time since we battled the undead with offensive plants, but the time has come again to team up with Crazy Dave and save your brains from the zombie hordes. Plants vs. Zombies 2 is live all around the world right this minute. Things are a little different this time, though. Plants vs. Zombies 2 takes you on a trip through time, which also happens to be infested with zombies. They must have skipped over that in the history books.

The gameplay is mostly like it has always been, but with a few new plants and a ton of new zombies. The game is free-to-play, which means a lot of in-app purchases are available to you. However, it looks like most of the content can be obtained through good old-fashioned grinding. The visual style has changed very little from the original, which is probably fine – the wacky zombies have held up pretty well. The Play Store page doesn't currently list it, but there is Google Play Games integration.

Even if you aren't sure about dropping cash on PvZ2, it's probably worth checking out. We've got a full review incoming soon as well.

  • solbin

Glad to see this finally available. Hopefully the IAP won't be too bad.

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Woo! Been legitimately waiting for this. Something to do on the golden throne for a few days.

    • Bluewall

      Stay classy Artem :P

      ... (but I thought the same :D)

    • ari_free

You melted down all those iphone 5s's to make a toilet?

      • epsiblivion

        don't forget those HTC Ones

  • Guest

    Still not available in Canada...

  • Cherokee4Life

come on 10 million downloads in 24 hours!!!

    • Cherokee4Life

it is 169MBs.... oh wow. it puts it into perspective T-Mobile "giving away" 200MB a month for tablets!

  • mlj11

I'm more impressed by the new widget.

    • Cherokee4Life

      was thinking the same thing!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Something we're testing.

      • Kaero

I like it. Now there's no possible way I'll accidentally click the appbrain button instead of the Play Store button which I did nearly every time.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Well, now you can click the Playboard title instead :P

          • bl_nk

Why the hell do you use the widget at all then?

Unless it's paying you commission, all everyone wants is a link to the playstore, not some third party crap.

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Because a widget is a widget, it's showing dynamic information at a glance, which beats a static link any day. If the Play Store had official widgets, which I've been asking for for years, I would have used those. Until then, Appbrain, Playboard, etc. is the next best thing.

          • Justin Swanson

Any chance you can add a direct link for those of us viewing on business networks that block the playboard widget?

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I'm going to look into it, but I can't promise that's possible.

          • Justin Swanson

            Woot! Thanks, very much! :)

  • Jeff Soohoon Yu

US version also works in Canada!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, it's just North America vs the rest.

    • RyanWhitwam

Sometimes I forget you guys are up there. Sorry about that.

      • Jeff Soohoon Yu

        ouch T_T

  • Stephen

anyway to transfer a save from an ios device?

    • Thomas’

Not until the iOS version uses the Play Games services.

    • Phong Huynh

Same problem here... I'm switching from iOS to Android and looking for a way to sync my games... I do NOT want to start all over again on Android....

  • Mike

Does anyone know if this works with Google Play Games?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

The Play Store page would have shown the Play Games symbols if it supported it.

      • Thomas’

It is only shown after a certain amount of Play services API calls to prevent developer from claiming service integration w/o actually implementing it.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

          Ah, that's smart.

    • Paul Brocklehurst

I'm seeing GPG on the main menu. 22 achievements and leaderboards.

      • Thomas’

        + Cloud Sync. Yay!

  • http://www.bfolkers.com Brian Folkers

Not compatible with GS4 GPE.... sweet.

    • Leighton

Same here, not compatible with my GS4 GPE either. Is it specifically the Google Play Edition, then?

    • Pyro

Same here -___- I have the T-Mobile S4 with the GPE ROM, seems to be GPE specifically.

    • Vince

Same here... But it works on my GS2 and Galaxy Tab 2

  • Paul Brocklehurst

great stuff :) Any ideas of why they listed two listings for different regions? Is it so the North Americans don't have to download all the german, italian, portuguese, russian, etc localisation?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Nah, nothing to do with that. EA always publishes from two accounts - I think it's more to do with them having two separate companies and having to deal with taxes and sale reports. You can see the company names differ between the versions.

  • Dean Hoadley

Not up in the UK yet

  • remister

Why is this game not a Play Games?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      It is, actually.

      • NothingUnknown

Unfortunately no cloud syncing. I wanted to be able to play on my tablet at home and on my phone out and about.

        • Thomas’

It has cloud sync. Create a new profile on your second device (with other name), log into Play services, wait a few seconds, choose your profile from the first device.

          • NothingUnknown

Just found it! Thanks. I didn't know you could change the profile name to an existing one.

          • psxindo

It's not working on mine. The profile from the first device never show up

          • NathanDrago

Is there cloud save as well? If I wipe my only Android device, will I be able to restore my save data?

          • Thomas’

This is what we understand as "cloud sync".

          • NathanDrago

I thought they were two different things, where "cloud sync" didn't actually back up content online, it merely synced it across devices. Glad to see that I was wrong :-)

  • Marcus

Runs incredibly slow on my Note running CM10.1.

  • http://farukahmet.blogspot.com farukahmet

I can see the page but says not compatible with my phone, which is an HTC One. Wonder if this is really a One issue or a region issue. Has anyone with a One (sigh) tried it?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/cody-toombs/ Cody Toombs

It does install and work on my HTC One (currently running Android 4.3). However, it does seem very prone to crashing, to the point I'm giving up on playing it on there and trying another device.

  • mark

Play games support for achievements but sadly.not game progress sync

    • remister

Damn that sucks, I was hoping for progress sync, so I can play on the tablet and phone.

      • Paul Brocklehurst

yes, sucky. Even with facebook login (urgh) doesn't sync between devices.

    • RyanWhitwam

It actually does have progress sync. You have to put in a new profile name on each device, but then just log into Google Play Games and tap the profile button on the main screen. You can switch to the profile you used on your other device and everything syncs fine.

Note: I have tested this on two devices. It works.

      • Thomas’

Had to test it for myself and it works perfectly! Syncs everything, levels, stars, keys and money!

      • Natassia Tavares

I can't sync. When you say "log into Google Play Games" you mean to open the app right? And then what? I didn't find the profile button on the main screen.

        • Garrett

Any luck on determining how this works?

      • Natassia Tavares

Thank you so muuuuch! I was going crazy searching google all aroud trying to find a solution! Really, really thanks *_*

      • psxindo

Doesn't seem to work. The profile from my other device doesn't show up. N4 and N72013

  • Bendichi

Says it's incompatible with all my devices, ie N4 and N7.

    • Bendichi

Looks like that was just the intl version, US version working fine. Strange as I am located in Ireland

  • ImSteevin

How bad is the "free" to play

    • remister

It's really not that bad. I didn't need to buy anything on the iPod Touch version to complete the game. At times I wished I had unlock some other stuff with the world keys, but that could just be overcame with doing the objectives.

      • ChainsawCharlie

Not that bad is not good enough for me.

    • Thomas’

Farming "keys" can be annoying if you're unlucky.
Otherwise I've played all the main levels without purchases or unfair situations. The game is way more challenging than the first part though. Challenging, but not unfair.

  • Jason Wright

    Not in Japan yet

    • Primalxconvoy

Works fine for me in Japan. Probably your phone. Try clicking on the Sheridan version.

  • GraveUypo

oh look, a new thing that's compatible with my defy! that's cool.

Typo: "The visual style hasn't changed very little from the original"

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Thanks, flagged Ryan.

  • Primalxconvoy

American version works from play store in Japan.

  • Matthew Fry

Yay! I don't have to be an Aussie anymore!

  • Chickentuna

    Force closes on gs4 4.3

  • Thomas’

btw, some trivia: Developer get so much more feedback on Play Store compared to iTunes.
One day after release on Play: 16k reviews, several months after release on iTunes: 13k reviews.

    • Andrew

Well... Apple also reviews the reviews and selectively posts them. They don't even post a rating until enough have come in.

      • Mozaik

        Wat? , lol

        • Andrew

I made an assumption based on research I did a few months ago probing for interest in an app I'm making for android. I remember the iTumes review specifically stating that there weren't enough reviews. As I look, though, from my iPod Touch, there are actually plenty of reviews for the app in question. Odd.

          • okk

Is it possible to write the word Android yet? I remember, back when I had my iPod Touch 1. Gen and I wanted to write a review, whenever I used the word "android" the review would never appear.

      • Thomas’

Seeing how many crappy reviews I've found in the iTunes Store: Nope, that's not the reason.

  • Kwills88

have the N7 2012 and all i see is black screen ;-/

  • Jon

I live in Hong Kong. "This app is incompatible with all of your devices"...great.

    • Billy Wan

Seems Hong Kong doesn't belong to this "world". Cannot install both version here.
Maybe we need an "Elsewhere" version?

      • Justin Swanson

Because Hong Kong is out of this world! ... I don't even find that funny :/

      • willly wu

Need to find the free version on the net. Download it to your pc, both apk and obb file, then manually transfer to your device and install. Take some time.

    • Genius

Change phone language and go to google play :)

  • Android Developer

I can see many have put 1 star rating because they delayed the app for Android.

Also, I wonder why they made 2 versions. What's the difference between the N.America version and the international one?

    • Thomas’

Probably none. That's just for legal reasons I guess.

      • Android Developer

if there is no difference, where is the legal part ?
also, if they wanted to publish it only in certain countries, i think they can do it already without creating multiple apps.

        • Martijn van Eijndhoven

My guess is tax evasion. All non-us countries get an app from EA France. I guess this is becouse they dont pay us tax over foreign sales if they dont bring the money into the us.

  • Funem

Surprised no-one has said it, but "Its about time"

  • Unknown182

I don't think I've ever seen such a big IAP whore. Wtf?!

    • Cristian Borsa

      One word. EA.

      • Unknown182

Ah, that explains it. All is normal then.

  • AndyH

This app is incompatible with your device.
    I'm using HTC Sensation

  • Andry

cant install it in my HTC Sensation =(

  • Liam

Dosent appear in the play store on my HTC One

  • tawen

Why is it not compatible for Samsung galaxy s advance??

  • James Francis

It's not true that grinding gets you somewhere. The keys are virtually impossible to collect for free and the prices behind individual upgrades are ridiculous.

  • acvsquared

Is there any way to sync ur progress with another android device? It doesnt work even if ur logged in to ur fb account.

  • swankme

can someone tell me why I cannot play pvz 2 on my divice its a Samsung transform ultra

  • kristin

Why is plants vs zombies 2 not showing up for me to download on my HTC sensation cell

  • Kaphare Amruta
  • chaz fairbairn

Hello I have the plant vs zombies 2 and cleared all 24 on all 3. I also have a key but can't unlock the 4th world. Does any one know why ?

    • chaz fairbairn

Oh and I have this on my nook
