Last week, we published the first look at Play Store 4.4, which most notably replaced the menu-accessible navigation buttons with a new slide-out UI. An APK teardown of this update also yielded the news of Google Play Newsstand and a special message to the AP teardown team that we humbly enjoyed quite a bit. Today, this update is live.

Unfortunately, the rumor of a more drastic card-heavy UI update hasn't panned out just yet, but we'll continue looking out for it in future Play Store updates.

What's New?

Slide-out navigation seems to be the only change we found in Play Store v4.4.21 compared to the previous version v4.3.11. If you spot something we haven't, please drop a line below.

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing Play Store. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take weeks, download and install it just like any other APK and enjoy the new Play Store experience.

Does this mean 4.4 is near?!!?!?!?!?

    • http://twitter.com/rohanXm Rohan Mathur

    • Jadephyre

      probably not.
Someone else mentioned the 23rd, but I think thats very, very optimistic thinking.

      • Bendichi

        Latest rumor is Oct 28.
The KitKat G+ page's teaser photos suggest it. For example "This is it", spelt in KitKat bars, is the name of a Michael Jackson documentary/show which was released on October 28. There was also posted an image of an Android KitKat figure with the caption "Everybody dance now", a famous line from the song "Gonna make you sweat" by C+C Music Factory, formerly known as the 28th Street Crew.

Fingers crossed this adds up to more than desperately sought out coincidences..!

AP, your as fast as Google Nexus Updates! Thanks

    • Logan

Hey, They don't take a few weeks to roll out! They're much faster than that.

  • Marcell Lévai

I don't really find this useful. I mean, we still have that menu button - why? Why can't those options (Settings and Help) in there be moved to the sidebar?

    • Zargh

Because Settings and Help don't belong in core navigation, according to the Android Design guidelines.

      • Marcell Lévai

Thanks for the explanation :) I must say I don't really agree with this decision then.

    • Joshua

If you read through the Design Guidelines, you'll see that it's not actually a Menu button (although it is triggered by the Menu button on devices that have such in the hardware--eg, Samsung devices)--it's the Action Overflow, a button that carries all Action Bar options that don't fit in the Action Bar on a given view.

The Action Bar is supposed to show the buttons users will need about 70-80% of the time (according to the guidelines). Since the Play Store Action Bar already contains buttons, they must be ranked according to importance. The Settings and Help buttons are Action options that are superseded by the Search bar, and so they get relegated to the Action Overflow, as all buttons of lesser importance are (at least, that's how it's supposed to be in apps that follow the guidelines).

I hope that helps to clarify that bit of Android design!

Source: I've read the guidelines obsessively thanks to my desire to create an app that follows them to a T.

      • Marcell Lévai

I get it. Maybe it's... bad design? I've never used the Help section, and settings only a few times. There are some apps that have this button, and it only contains a settings option (e.g. tapatalk). You simply don't tinker with an app's settings every day.

  • Ashwan

In the file size history, shouldn't the last entry read 4.4.21?

Do you have any info whether or not android 4.4 on nexus 5 will be based on the new linux kernel 3.10

    • matt

not 100% sure but i think i read something about this, i think it is

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I don't but I haven't seen the new kernel on any builds yet.

    • Greyhame

Are there significant dis/advantages to this being the case? Honest question.

    • Tony Ceralva

      Sadly, no.

      Maybe in Android 5.0..

    • turdbogls

thought i read somewhere it would be linux kernel 3.8....that was a while ago and could have just been a guess/rumor

  • Floris

The games section still is confusing (to me at least). You are directed into a sub category of apps, yet it feels like a completely different section and acts like it.

  • Joey Colclough

Said it before and I'll say it again. Nexus 5 and 10 along with Android 4.4 will be out the 23rd. After all it'll be exactly 5 years to the day that the 1st Android phone the HTC G1 was released to the public.

  • Alter

No more "My apps" button in the action bar (for tablets, anway)? That sucks.

    • magnafunk

It's in the slide out menu

      • Alter

I know where it is. My point was that I prefer it in the action bar.

  • James Seagle

Am I missing something or there no way to remove items from the wishlist?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Tap the item and press the wishlist icon at the top or tap the contextual three dots on at the top right corner of the card in the wishlist and tap remove from wishlist.

      • James Seagle

I am only seeing Settings and Help, nothing else. If I touch the 3 dots in the little picture of the app in the wishlist I only get the option of Open. Maybe it is because the app is installed but I should still be able to remove from the wishlist. I get the Remove option with apps that are not installed.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

          See attached.

          • James Seagle

Yah, I see that with an app that is not installed but I was trying to remove an app that is already installed and I don't get the option to remove it, only open it. I guess I'll need to uninstall it to remove it but seems like a minor bug.

          • Phil Oakley

Hmm...if you (indirect you, not you specifically) it should remove from the wishlist, if the app is free. I think it already removes if you buy an app on your wishlist.

          • James Seagle

It is a paid app, 1000000 to be specific.

          • Phil Oakley

Oh wow, really? That's odd. When I buy an app in my wishlist it removes it from the wishlist, I'm pretty sure of it. You could try clearing cache/data to see if it disappears.

          • Kenneth

            Is it a sideloaded app?

        • Phil Oakley

This is what I get. http://i.imgur.com/PMFAQqG.jpg

        • Narc

Long press the app in the wish list and you can choose på install or remove from list.

    • Rovindra Singh

Happened to me when I bought a movie that was in my wishlist, there is no option to remove it manually. It eventually gets removed, in the meantime just sit tight, hope this helps.

  • Jadephyre

Funny how a few people automatically assume that KitKat is also going to be released in the next few days xD
I don't believe it personally, but i'll be pleasently surprised if it does.

  • Kevin G. Sanchez

Definitely like the addition of Google+ profile pic.

  • GreatNews

+1! this is so fast and clean, smooth Thanks guys

  • john

Just because there's an update to an app doesn't mean that KK is near. It's just an update. KK will come out with or without an update.

  • Greek_Ice

Monday cured, thanks as always AP.

the icon for newsstand is included in the apk

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Sure is.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii
      • Floris

I already posted this in another comment below, but this really is something that changed in this build. The small overflow buttons on the cards are now dots instead of squares. Maybe a change coming up, as the button for the app launcher has the same shape in recent Nexus 5/Android 4.4 leaks.

    • Nick

Kind of reminds me of a HTC styled icon back when HTC Sense was much younger. (Pre 3.0)

  • Daldain

I would have been cranky if they released this for iOS first :)

Well now they're just being blatant...Android 4.4 will be released today...the 21st. Play Store version 4.4. wait for 21!!!

  • Brendan

You can now remove items from the wish list in the mobile version! Hooray!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

You could already do that in 4.3.11. I just double checked just in case.

The thing I love the most is the ridiculous fake +1's. It's hilarious.

  • William

I noticed that the overflow menu of the items is dots instead of squares. Maybe to differentiate them from the action bar overflow icon? Or maybe it indicates some more visual changes to Kit Kat?
I hope we get to know that and more soon!

    • Crispin Swickard

Much of what we have gotten to see of Kitkat seems to be moving toward circles rather than squares. App/folder/google/phone icon etc.

  • th3gaydud3

its fantastic, its more like the online store, if I click on music I can click on my music and it will open the play music app, as well as books anr etc

Am I the only one who doesn't see that significant of a difference?

  • Bleakvision

Meh, it still doesn't show how many apps are ready for an update and only shows the number of up to date apps. Yet when you start downloading an update it will show the number correctly.

  • Glee

    Good shit Google! Love it

  • Chris Lambert

Is this the first time a market release preceeded the main update? Quickly checking the 4.3 market didn't launch until after the N7 2013 was released.

  • Jamie Andrews

Are there any downsides to installing this APK over waiting for an OTA roll-out?

    • Chris Lambert

      Anticipation reduction.

      • Jamie Andrews

Ha, very true, but it is merely a small change to me. Nexus 5 and Kitat is where it's all at! ;)

  • mastel97

Anyone noticed that the 3 lines for the hamburger menu disappears when going into games?
You can still open it by a swipe though
