Back in early September, Google pushed out a version of Play Music that brought genre-based radio to mobile. Today, Music 5.3.1233L is making its way out via staged rollout, and it brings yet another radio feature: I'm Feeling Lucky radio.

Like its name suggests, this is an auto-generated radio station based on your past listening preferences. So, it's perfect when you can't figure out what to listen to. Unfortunately, it seems to stay focused on whatever genre you listen to the most – it doesn't seem to throw a mix of everything for those who may listen to more than one style of music (read: basically everyone). Still, it's a fun way to possibly discover some new tunes in your preferred genre, which is never a bad thing.

Update: Here's the full changelog:

  • I'm feeling lucky radio gives you music you love at the push of a button
  • Pin icons added to cards to make it easier to find things you've kept on device

Since, like basically all Google app updates, Play Music will be rolling out over the next few days, we've mirrored the APK so you can get your random tunes on right now. Enjoy.

Thanks, Keyan X!

google launch the play music service in india plz and ap ur awesome..

    • Roh_Mish

If they launch it now they have to go through multiple association just like in canada and pay about 20% as tax due to our government's shitty FDI policy

      • thegermanguy

        Same shit in Germany...

  • Cherokee4Life

I just opened Google Play Music like an hour ago... I must say it's pretty epic all the songs so far are ones I have forgotten about. Memory Lane, well done Google.

  • Jerry Gooch

I'd be much happier if they added the cast feature to the Google TV app. It's annoying to have to use the remote.

  • David Viohl

Downloaded from both mirrors and neither one would install.

Anyone else having the same issue?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

What Android version are you running? I suspect the apk we posted has a minimum API level higher than yours.

      • David Viohl

        • Dominick White

Also check and see if you already have the update.. It was doing the same thing to me as well, it seems I had gotten the update awhile ago, but didn't notice cause I have all google services set to auto update

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

            Good point.

        • SlenderSniper

Try installing it by opening it using a file browser, such as sliding explorer.

          • David Viohl

Yeah that's what it was. It installed fine using root explorer.

          • SlenderSniper

Yeah been having that issue for a while now.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Just checked - the APK is good for Froyo and above.

      • remister

I have the same issues most of the time. I get the download and go to the downloads app and try to open it, It states it can't be open. I know when it downloads correct when it gives me an Android icon as appose to a question mark within a square. I had to download to PC and then send it to myself and save it on my device and then was able to install it.

  • Sir_Brizz

    "it's prefect"

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Cameron Summerson

      Ah, dammit. Fixed.

Got this last night. Had no idea what it did til now.

  • Jeffery Keel

This is probably my most used/favorite application on Android. Google has really outdone themselves with this application and I love it a little more each day. I hope they continue to improve the application and continue to add more features to make the application better.

The only thing I want now is a remote function so I can play the music on my phone and control it on the web and vice versa.

    • KChristainsen

Yep agreed. Google has done a great job. I wish the music manager(desktop app) had more functionality out of it tough. Simple tagging(from Google music metadata) and file renaming/organizing would be much appreciated.

      • Roh_Mish

I would like to edit iD3 tags inside app and have one click autocomplete but it is a great app

    • Adrian Meredith

you can use the cheap cast app to do that if you have a tablet

    • https://plus.google.com/108596272537415356460/posts Jason Farrell

      Agreed. My fav app.

Only thing missing is a "Play Next" option like the browser version has, as it makes queue management MUCH easier so don't have to manually drag stuff added to the queue around.

  • BangIShotYou

Funny. Got this last night, first time I ever got a staged rollout update before everyone else. I noticed the change right away. So far I must say that it is perfect! I gave it a go right now at work and what it came up with for me to listen to is spot on!

  • selonmoi

    - Canada

    • Nevi_me

I'm going to Canada for a few months, at least I've already got it activated while I'm in South Africa, pity I still have to go to iTunes to actually buy music though :(

    • Michael Pahl

No offense, but is it just me or are all the comments about being outside the US starting to feel exactly like all then "ETA?" comments over at CM....

      • Labrat

Maybe but for as Canadian, we are used to get Google stuff at almost the same time as the US.

The two glaring omissions are Google Voice and Google Music. So when you see Liechtenstein getting Google Music, I feel whining about it is warranted.

Now I am pretty sure this is not Google's fault, still...

        • Michael Pahl

Google Voice is not Google's choice, its purely based on legal reasoning.

    • http://GPlus.to/Abhisshack Abhisshack

this is your punishment you Canadian people for creating Justin Bieber. Deal with That ;-) :P

    • PaulPaulU

I got the update in Canada. Now I have a "I'm feeling lucky" button and underneath it says "Shuffle on device music"

  • jammer

If they don't allow the local music to be stored on the SD card then I'm not updating. Can anyone confirm?

    • MattE303

If you are referring to being able to store "pinned" music on the SD card, that feature is never coming back (according to Google support it's a "licensing" issue, which I call BS on). I've been blocking updates for the app since they took it away.

      • Sam Hollis

I doubt it's BS. Music contracts are notoriously strict. They hate the internet model, it took the power out of their hands.

    • https://plus.google.com/108596272537415356460/posts Jason Farrell

I didn't update for the longest time either, because I didn't want to have to resort to external SD hacks again, like the sometimes-flakey bindmounts & symlinks.

However, if you're rooted, give the Xposed framework (on XDA) + the Music2SD module (in Play store) a try. It's worked perfectly for me for the last month.

      • EH101

Thanks for posting this, I accidentally updated a while back and never got around to downgrading. I will give this module a shot.

  • Jacob Groß

Google play store apps update wave incoming?

    • cas_e

For the love of god I hope they release the iOS app soon. I can't take this much more :/

    • NinoBr0wn

Pretty much been happening over the last 2 weeks.

  • blix247

This app is stellar, they just need to give it more Google Now integration. Its pretty stupid that when you say "Listen to Nirvana", it opens Google music and only plays a single song. You also can't use the Listen to command for playlists or albums. I wonder if its a patent issue?

    • Pengwn

When you say listen to *artist*, I feel like it should just start playing the top tracks if an album isn't specified.

  • Kurt Knebel

I assume it needs All Access, just like the Genre Radio?

    • miri

    • miri

Actually, if you haven't checked yet, I hear if you don't have an all-access subscription it works sort of like a shuffle button, but I''m not going to terminate my sub just to see if it works.

    • Spasillium

Nope. I'm no longer subscribed as of a month ago and can still use I'm Feeling Lucky. Then again, I do have my entire ~19,000 library uploaded and it seems to just play those.

  • asphantix

I hate this stupid app, cause it shows the wrong banners to my music all the time and now it suggests crap music I don't even want to try. That's what happens when you listen to some genres that are not as popular as pop music. It's a mainstream app for mainstream music.

    • Guest

I listen to lots of unusual music and I get plenty of good suggestions.

      • asphantix

You only get suggestions to music you can buy on the play store. 90% of the music I listen to is not there, so that's why I get crap suggestions and false banners

    • Spasillium

I'm guessing you mean crap like this, where it displays something random in the banner, and can't be changed from device nor the Play Music site.

      • asphantix

        yeah exactly

  • Jan

:/ In the german app it says ": Auf Gut Glück!" - with the colon in front....

  • Nevi_me

I like that it now shows which music is pinned on the device. Pity that DRM issues and whatnots only allow them to store downloaded music in a "secret enclave" instead of SD cards. My phone's low on disk space with all this music. Everytime I see a new available album I have to decide what to delete.

  • Garry DeWitt

So close to being able to uninstall pandora. Keep it up, google!

  • Taco Monster

Anyone else having the issue where I'm Feeling Lucky only plays metal/hard rock? The last time I listened to that stuff was when I was in high school!

  • Fiorta

Anyone know why you can't select single songs too keep on device only albums?

    • Alex Winton

Just make a playlist of the songs you want to keep and save that.

  • miri

Just noticed that starting radio stations has new animations and at the top of the queue it tells you which station you're listening to and gives you a refresh button to rejumblify the music.

  • Karlo

    GET LUCKY!!!

  • Nicholas Ruiz

Im holding on to the version with the saving to SD option for as long as I can. That feature is way too essential to me.

    • gspida

what version is that? what did you have to do to enable the sd option I forget?

    • gspida

Also I wonder if I use tbu to keep 2 versions will the music stay on the sd then I could just switch when I don't have data connection? Anybody tried this?

    • https://plus.google.com/108596272537415356460/posts Jason Farrell

Root + Xposed framework (apk on XDA) + Music2SD module (in Play store) == problem solved.

      • gspida

I'm going to try that but I just installed the old version and used the sd card trick and then installed the latest version and the album is still on my sd card and the new version is playing it right now (with all data off) So you could just switch back and forth to put albums on the sd card.

        • Austin Warren

Which version is this and can you post an APK?

  • Mystery Man

$10 says the shuffle option is still broken

  • DrinkinGinNJoking

Dear Google: Pls let me turn off instant mix! Pls let me increase mobile UI fonts.

  • Kristian Sandoval

Just noticed that they also let you make a radio of all on-device music, too.

  • Tony

I don't see any "pin icons" on the cards for music I definitely have on my phone. What's up with that, would have been a cool feature.

  • NinoBr0wn

Anyone remember what the original Google Music app used to look like? Yea me neither.

    • AbbyZFresh

And why does this matter? Google Music looks far better now with its Card UI than its prior design.

      • NinoBr0wn

        That was my point..

  • A Black UI is the best UI

And yet no music from countries that actually make good music just the same old american rubbish.

  • Matt

It's strange. I tried this and while every song in the playlist was a song that I liked they were not from artists I would typically listen to and not from artists that are even in my library. But even if I had not heard the song before, I had at least heard of the artist at some point in my life. And again, I LIKED the songs. They were songs that if I heard them on the radio I would not turn it off. Compare this to All Access Radio feature which when selecting an artist I am familiar with, generates of playlist of obscure crap that I've never heard or would desire to hear even if I lived a thousand years.

  • Shivram.K

I am from India, and have updated it today.... but I cannot see the option of Radio on any of the screens....has it been disabled for India.....
