File manager apps are legion on Android. Whether you want something with a ton of features or just a pretty UI, it's out there. One of the top file managers is Solid Explorer, and it's just gotten a nice update to version 1.5. You can stash your files in more places than ever with this one.

Here's the full changelog from this update:

  • UbuntuOne, Copy and MediaFire cloud clients
  • rewritten Google Drive client (Google's SDK requires permission: ACCESS_ACCOUNTS)
  • compatibility with Android 4.3
  • refined bookmarks panel
  • ability to protect cloud bookmarks with master password
  • support for self signed SSL certificates
  • fixed WebDav issues
  • fixed file picking with Chrome
  • fixed notifications in FTP server
  • fixed UI glitches
  • fixed other minor issues and crash reports

Solid Explorer was already an extremely powerful app, but it's really getting its cloud support in order. The dual-pane interface also makes transferring files to and from the cloud much easier. Any bookmarks you have in the cloud can also be protected with a password, if you're the paranoid type. The update should be live for everyone in Google Play.

This is a capable, beautiful app.

I bought the pro version the moment it became available, and have found it to be money well spent. Nothing pleases a paying customer more than knowing that the product is well-maintained, and this app is a fine example of such a product.

ES explorer is good as well. It does what I want so I am fine with it.

      • Himmat Singh

This is better on a tablet I find. Phone not so much I guess.

i switched from es explorer to solid a long time ago, because es explorer was very slow and sluggish on my desire hd while solid worked flawless. also es explorer had a quite childish and ugly look and feel.

can't say how es explorer evolbed meanwhile, but in the past it was 100x slower than solid

        • RTWright

I've never seen ES be slow on any phone I've had. That sounds like something to do with the Desire more than ES.

Definitely a great app, at the moment, however, I am using the CM explorer which does lack some features in comparison but it's good enough for me so I don't see the need for other apps. That said my experience with the free version was great, I'd definitely recommend it.

They finally fixed the "can't write to system root" issue on 4.3.

    • SYO

This has been driving me crazy! Didn't know it was an issue due to 4.3

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, some root functions in Total Commander also broke in 4.3, as they did in Solid Explorer. Surprisingly, good old trusty Root Explorer worked fine without any updates. Shows that it's still worth keeping it around.

Ya know, that's interesting you say that. I've used SEVERAL file manager apps, which have had root capabilities, that don't work on newer OS updates - like rm'ing camera tones etc. If I go to my fallback, Root Explorer, it just .... works. I've never understood why all others I've tried over the years have had issues from time to time but RE never does.

Besides Nova Launcher, this is one app that you definitely need to consider purchasing. I rarely ever buy apps since there is always an alternative that is just as good if not better, however, there is no alternative to this beautiful app, free or paid.

Solid Explorer is a must -have app for me. Can't live an Android without it.

Having use various file explorer, I started with Astro File Manager on Froyo era, then to ES Explorer in GB, and finally Solid Explorer since ICS till now.

  • Ismael Rodriguez

And the best got better. This and Nova (Prime) are the first two apps I install on a new device.

  • Primalxconvoy

It's really great but I keep an alternative like astro around when this one can't copy or move files (happened yesterday).

  • Venty

Couldn't get Solid Explorer to connect to my FTP server which was a deal breaker for me. ES Explorer connects just fine and is very comparable feature-wise,

  • SYO

I bought this app in a heartbeat after a long while of happy use while it was still in beta. Best money ever spent.

Anttek's beta (on XDA forums) has definitely caught my eye because of its aesthetics and it's take on drag and drop functionality. When you long press and hold a file or folder, a bar of functions comes up on top where you can drag the file or folder to in order to execute the action (like delete, copy, cut, etc.). It works pretty well. It's still a little buggy with the copy/paste but it's still a beta afterall. It's definitely worth following.

..But Solid Explorer is still my primary file explorer because the side-to-side swipe navigation between different directories is a god-send! I know Anttek has a 2 panel mode and it has an easily accessible bookmarks side bar..but it's so cramped and just not as seamless on a phone in portrain mode. I like how Solid Explorer implements 2 "panels".

Switched from Root Explorer to This, I don't think I'm Going Back! :)

  • Tim242

I tried it, it's OK. still prefer Root Explorer though.

    • Riko Gonzalez

I Switched, Solid has better support for 4.3 its cleaner and more functional in my opinion!

      +1 for Root Explorer.

  • Himmat Singh

Why is the paid version not updated? Just noticed the last update was March 25th....I hope he didn't screw us over.

    • akshay7394

There is no 'paid version'. It's a paid license and then the trial version updates it self as a paid version. If you hadn't paid for the license, the trial app stops working after 15 days.

    • Spasillium

Um... he's not screwing us over. That's the unlock key you're talking about, not the main app.

      • Himmat Singh

Ok, I totally forgot about this. Seemed odd. Thanks for refreshing my memory.

  • Lumi

Used this exclusively while it's on beta, but after it became paid I went back to ES explorer and was really surprised that it's really good and clean now! ES has some quirks that need getting used to, but it's free and just as functional as Solid (before major updates). Even so, I'm not going to be using the new features much so it's still ES for me

  • bat0nas

Congrats on 2$ well spent LOL :P The ES Explorer user.

  • jason

Carefull with the new feature to "allow any certificate". Actually this is the wrong way to support self signed certificates.

It should present the certificate upon first connect and let the user decide to accept it. if accepted it should memory the certificate and the server and on consecutive connects to that server it should verify if it is still the same certificate, otherwise deny the connection.

that's the common and correct behaviour. i hope they'll fix that asap for solid explorer. the way it is now is a big security hole.

Cant login to local fileserver! No problem at all with ES...! Dont get it. Why?
