You probably know Hexage. This developer has been a part of the Android gaming landscape since the beginning with titles like Radiant, EVAC, and Robotek. Hexage's newest title is the 2D action RPG Reaper, and it looks amazing.

This game takes the essence of an RPG and distills it to work effortlessly on a mobile device. There aren't a plethora of buttons all over the screen, just left and right controls and a gesture area for attacks and jumps. You travel around the map, taking on quests and fighting baddies, all the time collecting gold to buy more gear.

As with some of Hexage's recent titles, there are in-app purchases, but they probably don't work like you expect. You can play through part of the game for free, but it costs $2.99 to unlock the whole thing. However, there are other versions of the game (for $3.99 and $4.99) which can be unlocked with more content and free items. It's kind of like buying the collector's edition of a PC game.

Reaper has lovely, whimsical graphics. The trademark lighting effects common to Hexage games are on display, but the character models and environments seem just a little more refined than in previous titles. It's free to try, so take a look.

I love Hexage. I barely needed to glance at the article to download it.

    • Thomas’

Yeah, though i'd love to see them adding (or improving) the Play Games Services integration in their older titles.

This kind of in-app purchases is excellent.

I'm afraid that many dumb people in the Play Store will see this differently.

Looking forward to a review. The hack-n-slash action presented in the video looks great, but I don't see much of a role-playing element.

propably what the article means as RPG is the evolution of the character's habilities and sword.. and also the walking around (wilderness by the video).. I hope it has a story, or else, the walking around will be a little boring no?

This is a legit action RPG that checks off all the basic requirements. There are levels to gain, stats to increase, gold to acquire, inventory to manage, and story text to click through. It's just all packaged in an innovative way that is better suited for mobile devices.

I bought it yesterday, and I'm hooked.

Hexage is my favourite game developer. The graphics are aesthetic. Insta fan after playing their Radiant game. This too will not be a let down.

Yes! Proper usage of the IAP system. Free to try, then unlock IAP to buy!

Not much animation going on for it being 2D. Looks like a flash game to me.
