The Professor Layton series has been lighting up the sales charts on the Nintendo DS and 3DS for six years, and now the spin-off of the addictive puzzle games is available on Android. Following an English debut on iOS three months ago (which isn't too terrible, all things considered) Layton Brothers Mystery Room is now available on the Google Play Store as a free download.

You play as Scotland Yard's Constable Lucy Baker, assistant to Alfendi Layton, son of Professor Layton. Layton Brothers is more about investigation and less about puzzles - it's a sort of mix between the hidden object genre and story-driven adventure games. The simple 3D environments can be searched from top to bottom, and items are entered into evidence as you find them. You'll also interview witnesses in the style of Phoenix Wright, finally fingering the murderer and solving the case.

The prologue and first two cases of the game can be played for free, but the other seven cases come as in-app purchases ($3 for 3-6, $2 for 7-9). That's not bad at all for a game developed by the same studio as the original DS games. And if you're bummed that the more classical Professor Layton puzzle-focused gameplay isn't on display here, the seventh game in the main series should make its way to Android at some point.
