ASUS is getting into the gigantic phone market in a big way. After their initial offerings in the Fonepad line (that's large, tablet-style phones, not to be confused with the docking Padfone) the company has announced a new model and at IFA in Germany, along with a previously announced but unreleased one. The Fonepad Note 6 (ME560CG) is a conventional "phablet" design, complete with stylus, which we saw back in June. The Fonepad 7 is a new, more downmarket device with lower specs.

Fonepad Note 6

The Fonepad Note 6 is the clear star here, thanks to its stylus-equipped screen with a resolution of 1920x1080. ASUS is making an interesting choice as far as the power plant: it's running an Intel Atom Z2580 dual-core CPU clocked at 2Ghz. Other specs include 2GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of storage with MicroSD, and a somewhat lackluster 8MP rear camera. The battery is 3200mAh, which is pretty typical for a modern device of this size. The design is a bit vanilla, but includes a bay for the stylus and front-facing speakers. Software is Android 4.2.2 with a few ASUS additions.

Fonepad7

The Fonepad 7 is a bit more low-end, thanks to its larger but lower-res 720p screen. There's no stylus functionality, and the processor is slower: it's the Atom Z2560 dual-core clocked at 1.6Ghz. But the biggest downgrade is probably the RAM, which has been chopped in half for a single gigabyte. Storage options will range from 8GB all the way to 32GB, again with a MicroSD card slot chaser. The rear camera is downgraded to 5MP, but the larger frame allows ASUS to cram in a bigger 3950mAh battery with a claimed 10-hour life. Software is 4.2.2 on the Fonepad 7 as well.

Both phones (if you can call them that) will be offered in 3G GSM versions, and there's no word of LTE versions. ASUS isn't saying when the devices will be available, in what markets, or for how much, but considering the venue a European release is almost certain.

Berlin, Germany (4th September, 2013) — ASUS today announced the new Fonepad Note 6, a sleek 6-inch Android tablet with a razor-sharp Full HD display that offers both multi-touch and stylus input, and built-in HSPA+ 3G for telephone calls and mobile internet. ASUS Fonepad™ Note 6 is designed for people who prefer the larger screen of a tablet for apps and entertainment, but who don’t want a separate smartphone just for telephone calls and internet access on the move.

Just 10.3mm thick and with a low 210g weight, Fonepad Note 6 slips easily into a pocket, yet packs a brilliant 6-inch Super IPS+ display with a stunning 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution that makes apps, games and web pages look exquisitely sharp. Super IPS+ (In-Plane Switching) display technology ensures a bright, vibrant image with wide viewing angles and great daylight visibility, while ASUS SonicMaster audio technology gives fantastic sound quality with the dual front speakers.

High-speed mobile internet and comprehensive stylus control

ASUS Fonepad Note 6 (ME560CG) is powered by the new Intel® Atom™ Z2580 processor with Hyper-Threading technology for an outstanding combination of multi-tasking performance and energy efficiency, with up to 23 hours 3G talk-time and 6.5 hours of video playback. DC-HSPA+ gives ultra-fast mobile internet access, with up to 42Mbit/s download and 5.76Mbit/s upload speeds, while a noise-cancelling mic ensures crystal-clear calls.

In addition to a 10-point capacitive multi-touch display for smooth and responsive fingertip control of Android 4.2, Fonepad Note 6 also features a stylus for handwritten input with exclusive ASUS apps. Instant Page launches automatically when the stylus is ejected from its silo to offer immediate note-taking, no matter which other app is in use, while Smart Crop makes it easy to save an image in any app just by circling the desired area. ‘Smart Peek’ previews give the same kind of quick access to app content that PC users have long enjoyed, too, with just a tap of the stylus.

Android 4.2 with exclusive ASUS features

ASUS Fonepad Note 6 also features a host of other exclusive refinements throughout Android 4.2. Apps include tight integration of social network support and an improved native email app has a new threaded conversation view.

A new camera app also unlocks the power of the rear 8-megapixel and front 1.2-megapixel cameras with real-time previews of image effects, and easy adjustment of white balance and exposure. The ‘All Smiles’ feature intelligent selects the best facial expression from a sequential series of photos to automatically compose a shot in which all subjects are smiling, while the ‘Smart Remove’ feature seamlessly removes unwanted background objects and people to create the perfect photo.

Fonepad Note 6 is available in black or white, with 16GB or 32GB onboard storage. Both models also feature a microSDHC card slot for adding more.

Stylish and practical Side Flip Cover protection

ASUS Fonepad Note 6 also has an optional protective Side Flip Cover case made from durable synthetic materials that protects both the tablet back and screen. The Side Flip Cover is hinged on the left side for quick and easy opening, and has a non-slip rubberized finish.

The Intel Atom's were awful in Netbooks, hopefully they have greatly improved.

    • http://mrmcpowned.com mrmcpowned

well, to be honest the atoms were trying to run a full fledged operating system with a severely under-powered chip. Considering android is optimized to run on hardware akin to netbooks, I'd say its safe to say that the atom line will do fine as a repurposed mobile processor.
