Anyone who played video games in the late 80s and early 90s probably lost at least one frustrating afternoon to the original Contra. This run-and-gun shooter was the archetype for innumerable games that were to follow. Now Contra has been spruced up and deployed in Google Play to taunt you all over again.

For anyone who hasn't experienced Contra, it's a (mostly) side-scrolling shooter with a ton of power ups and no mercy whatsoever. Really, even the easy mode is pretty serious business. The original graphics have been scrapped in favor of a high-res reimagining. It looks true to the classic, but avoids that unnecessary retro feel. It also includes two new playable characters and a few new weapons.

Contra: Evolution is selling for $0.99 in Google Play, but there are also in-app purchases. Don't mistake the difficulty as an attempt to get you to spend money (although that might be the end result). That's just how Contra is.

    Awww Yisssss. New toilet game

    • Brian Erickson

Totally how I see all games... about to go DL it on the toilet now!

  • KenshinDC

Look at all the permission this games needs, is this malware?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      It's the official game.

      • Guest

It needs my precise location, send SMS messages, read contacts, read call log? Why does a game like this need to read my call log for, let alone see my precise location?

It might be official, but it certainly smells bad.

        • nicotinic

It's so they can gather your personal data for marketing. A lot of developers do it and then stop when enough people complain. It's a Crappy thing to do.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

To know where exactly you're pooping, of course.

          • Robert Kuropatkin

Or maybe to spam his contacts! Who cares, right?

          • Pierre Gardin

            cn.konami. ......

I didn't know Konami was Chinese.

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

The .cn refers to the developer who brought the port to Android - Punchbox Studios. They're from China. http://www.crunchbase.com/company/chukong-technologies-inc

    • Ray

I'll certainly be avoiding this one. I really dislike games that request all these ridiculous permissions.

    • Adam

Poorly optimized maybe, but malware? Good grief.

  • Brian Utne

Eh, as big of a Nintendo fan as I was back in the day, Contra was just....never one of my favorite games. I liked Megaman a lot.

    • Mothreja Jay

      LOL (o.O)

    • Bryan Pizzuti

Yeah, Capcom needs to port those...

      • Brian Utne

I would buy them in a heartbeat!

  • nicotinic

I can't stand auto attack. Uninstalled. And I love Contra too...

    • Adam

I don't think you love Contra if you failed to realize you were holding down the attack button indefinitely anyway. It's Contra.

      • nicotinic

You get the Comment Fool of the Moment Award...

When I play Contra I can stop shooting whenever I please. When you start in the original you have to continuously tap to fire.

If they want to use nostalgia from my childhood, they'd better get the basics down pat.

It's like driving with someone else's foot on the pedal or with cruise control. It's not the same as doing it yourself.

I'm surprised you get cell coverage under your bridge troll...

        • Ambar Singh

You can turn off auto fire :

          • Kashmieer

          • nicotinic

            Are you the trolls club?

          • Fatty Bunter

Are you in the "too defensive to admit when they're wrong" club?

          • nicotinic

            And you're his rock?

            How was I wrong?

Fact: I don't like auto fire.
Fact: it was shooting for me.
Fact: the original Contra did not have auto-fire.

The original reply from Adam the troll didn't tell me that the auto-fire mechanism could be adjusted. He simply decided that I didn't love Contra... an opinion of my opinion.

Yeah, I'm super defensive. See that pistol in the picture?
            I swat bandwagoners ALL day.

            Now git!!

          • nicotinic

Awesome... still didn't like the feel of it. Thanks anyway. :/

  • http://www.keithwoo.com/ Keith Woo

    Those permissions. LULS!

  • Kenny

More importantly, will it accept the konami code and give me 30 lives? :p

    • Scott Breitbach

Read the whole article, then had to get through to the bottom of the comments to find this. I can't believe there was no mention of the konami code!

  • Jeff Moreira

Are you guys sure this is the official app? As far as I can see, when Konami releases a game it comes under "Konami Entertainment" and not that company that is offering this game.
I think it's fake and that is why it asks you lots of weird permissions.
Not even their contact are from Konami.

    • Mitch

      I agree 100%.

  • アドリアンタン郭華

Playing Contra for countless afternoons before raging when I get killed just before reaching the boss or trying to get that Machine Gun ... those were the good times , I hope this can bring back those nostalgic memories

  • Peter Bognar

Those app permissions are REALLY scary.

  • Flavio Ramos

No way I'm going to install with all these permissions. SMS? Add/Remove Accounts? Change network settings? Sure it's a PAID malware.

    • Zodac

That kind of permission I really cannot understand. Why a f...in game needs SMS or Remove Accounts? Or Google described the permissions really bad or the game is a malware/spyware, as you said.

  • jeffhesser

It even says 'by PunchBox Studios'.... who is that? Wish it had some moga controls.

    • jeffhesser

Guess it's been out for months on iOS without being pulled so I guess it's somewhat legit.

    • Michael McGrade

If they just made us pay a little more and took out the IAP's I'd be down...that and the MOGA compatibility...they do this and I may rethink getting it...for now I'll just play Contra on my NES.

  • Wewewi

    Anyone tried with a controller?

  • Elislurry

I used to quit the whole game and start over every time I died and lost spread or machine gun! Downloading now!

  • Paul_Werner
  • Mitch

I actually think this may be malware. Check the developers name. The official Konami brand for mobile is "Konami Digital Entertainment". I've never seen a game use permissions like change/intercept network settings and traffic, act as account manger or create accounts and set passwords. This is beyond fishy. Droid Gamers should look into this IMO.

  • Mr E

Super C still haunts my dreams!!!

  • Bryan Pizzuti

Much as I love Contra, Contra is violent enough without giving it permission to use my entire device as a level. With the spreadshot no less. Yeah, those permissions are pretty much the equivalent of a spreadshot, so it makes sense except for being scary.

  • Ahmad Nadeem

I didn't play the original Contra till 2010!! Really love it though

  • danbayne

OMG, what memories, correct me if I'm wrong and forgot...

up -up -down -down -left -right -left -right -B -A - Start

  • YaPeL

no gamepad suport out of the box? into the thrash it goes.

  • Falconator

I'm still amazed that people buy $60 games and don't return it to the store because of inapp purchases disguised as "addons".
