Alarm clock apps are not usually described as lovely, but this one is. Scratch that – Timely is devastatingly beautiful. The numbers morph gracefully from one to the next, there are a ton of themes, and the subtle movement in the background looks great. It's not just a pretty face, though. Timely has some really useful features.

Timely uses an interesting tap-and-drag gesture to set alarm times. If you prefer to use Google Now voice input, Timely works with that too. There are a ton of options for each alarm, including a large collection of sounds. For the stubborn types, Timely can be set to use a math problem or pattern challenge to wake you up before it shuts up. It also makes it easy to snooze or dismiss alarms. The UI looks a lot like the Android Phase Beam live wallpaper, but it's all customizable. It even comes with home and lock screen widgets.

The basic alarm functionality is free, but you have to get the premium pack with a $2.99 in-app purchase for all the content. That includes more themes, sounds, and challenges. The premium pack also enables cloud syncing and disables ads (show up after 5 days). Your alarms are actually pushed to all the devices you have Timely installed on, which is neat. The $2.99 price is a temporary 25% off deal, and you can unlock the app by bothering your friends with the share function as well.

    • Armus

      Ad blockers may prevent them

I love Holo and always will, but this is just one example of how app developers can deviate from its guidelines and still create a beautiful app.

Its steps like this that will eventually bring the downfall of iOS (which is so far, unfairly I might add, lauded for having higher quality apps).

    • joeljfischer

Believe it or not, this isn't a deviation. This is holo all the way. It uses the action bar and split action bar where necessary, it uses the default settings screen, it uses holo icons. It's holo done right, holo with a strong brand design sense, which is what Yahoo COULD have easily done, but didn't.

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/eric-ravenscraft/ Eric Ravenscraft

I love how Timely looks. Yahoo!'s weather app is even better looking.

        • joeljfischer

Yeah, it looks great. I just still think that it's super unfortunate that they copied their iOS app exactly. For some reason they felt it necessary to re-implement the sliding drawer (which I immediately tried to pull but couldn't), all the default icons, and the default settings screen. It's so close to being fantastic design AND sensible on the platform, "unfortunately" it's only fantastic design.

      • Laurence

Exactly! This app is a great example how how Holo is *not* a straitjacket. The Android design guidelines are mostly having a common for interacting with the device, not about imposing a single aesthetic on everything. In other words, they are more about the software works than how it looks. You can have an app that is unique and unusual and beautiful in terms of its visual design, without deviating from the Android design guidelines. This app is proof.

      • sivkai

You know, upon closer look, I am inclined to agree with you. It borrows a lot from Holo, so much so that you could consider it Holo itself! I still feel that the developer has been a little bit creative, Timely doesn't look tradition Jolo apps. For instance, it has a more creative background, fonts, etc.

But yes, I agree. Holo deserves some credit for this app.

Looks great but I hate in app purchases, prefer buying either separate app with the extra functions or a key. Had loads of problems when reinstalling apps where I've paid for the extra features.

    • lebel

as far as I know, in-apps purchases automatically follow you when you reinstall the app or install the app on another device.

      • sdcoiner76

That has been my experience also. Whenever I unlock the full version that is tied to my account just like if I had bought it outright.

        • Goldenpins

The original poster probably means the way the old playstore worked. In the past, it only downloaded payed apps so the in-app upgrade was seen as "free app" and never downloaded after a reset. You were basically forced to find the free app and download again. (extra step)Now it downloads all your apps free or payed.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/author/cody-toombs/ Cody Toombs

Things are supposed to be a lot better since the update in December (http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/12/10/google-updates-in-app-purchasing-apis-makes-them-faster-better-harder-stronger-and-less-likely-to-lose-transactions/), but the trauma of dealing with with unreliable IAPs has certainly left me leary of them, as well. This is coming from the same developer who created Tasks, so I tend to have a good amount of faith that everything will work as it should. Logically, since the sync functionality is kept behind the IAP, it's reasonable to assume it was tested pretty thoroughly.

      • Matthew Fry

Wow. Now that is a real selling point that should probably be put in the description. Tasks is a fabulous application.

    • Alan Shearer

This IAP is basically a key to unlock, without the need of s seperate app listing. Best type of IAP. And this type, assuming a good developer, follows you (usually they include a restore purchases option if not make it automatic. ask the developer if you are unsure is always a good rule. Developers who respond promptly are good ones and not crappy bastards.

    • Goldenpins

This has changed. It no longer works the same as the old play store. Before, it would only download payed apps and you had to re-download free apps by searching for them. The old play store would not know in app upgrades so the free app that became "unlocked" never downloaded with the payed apps. You always had to find them by hand instead of having them listed. Now, everything downloads after a reset because of the back-up-system and they are listed. Free or bought.

I hated them also for that reason but not anymore.

  • Andrei

It looks great... And then I read 'but you have to get the premium pack with a $2.99 in-app purchase'. This one's not for me, sorry!

    • Lynxy

Actually you don't have to. After 5 days the adds will appear, but the core functionality will still be intact (same functionality as stock Android clock app) and still helluva prettier. And you can still keep it for free. And if the adds bother you, it's only $1 to remove them.

  • august

  • bl_nk

If it could use my shuffeled music collection for the alarm like the hideous Gentle Alarm, this one would be an instant-buy.

  • Tamadrummer94

Pretty nice, but it strikes me as a "Rise" rip-off. Especially in how you set the alarm, that's a total rip on the iOS app.

  • andyr354

    Wow, looks perty.

  • yash1229

Would've bought it if not for the IAPs. :/

    • mgamerz

That's how you buy it... Seriously it's $3.

  • Armus

Oh please. I tried this thing and is not that pretty. Besides, why do I need a pretty clock app? I want it to work. It does of course but not for free. As for the cloud alarms, ehh. I don't really think that's so important. After all do I really need my phone and tab to go off and wake me in the morning? Of course not. So what alarms would I want on both? I just can't see buying or using this app which incorporates a gimmick at best. And to be honest, the lip service AP gives this app seems a bit too much. I smell some money exchanging going on here. It really doesn't deserve this amount of praise unless they are paying for it.

    • mlj11

I'm with you on the functionality over form thing, but "money exchanging"... seriously? Why can't blog writers express their like (or lack thereof) for an app without people questioning their morals every single time? From the way you write, it's almost as if people can't ever have an opinion.

And I read the article again: the writer hardly comes off as gushing or pushy about buying the app, which is the minimum I'd expect if I was an app dev paying him to express a biased opinion. Maybe you should think about whether you're projecting here.

      • Armus

As someone who had to write such crap (advertorial - I was a journalist) I agree that I may jump on articles a bit harshly. The obvious giveaway that a story in a paper is advertorial is when the author uses a huge adjective like "gorgeous" for something that is at best ok. A part of the journalist training is that adjectives are bad :) but of course this is a blog and not a newspaper, so perhaps my comment is harsh.

        • skyfire124

Tech blogs, while still journalism are supposed to have a more personal approach.. Everything in here is ultimately an opinion piece, so yeah "gorgeous" is allowed!

  • xnadax

Great-looking app, however setting an alarm using gestures or swiping will never be as efficient as just tapping 3-4 digits on a numpad (like in the new stock clock app). At least for me.

    • PhoenixPath

      "Set alarm for 6am."

Doesn't get much easier than that...

    • http://chromebookguru.tumblr.com Jason C

You can tap on the time and set it with a keypad also.

  • Justin

Any way to hide the upcoming alarm icon in the notifications shade? Shows up next to bluetooth and wifi, and alarm clock xtreme allowed me to hide it.

I just don't need more clutter up there.

  • quick

Sure looks good, but... No full screen clock, nor hiding the on screen buttons... what's the point?

I need an alarm clock app, that will be on while I'm sleeping, while the phone is in the dock.

This doesn't have any dimming features, and leaves the status bar, and on screen buttons up the whole time.

kaloer clock is the only one that I can find that provides these features, wish more alarm clocks would think about adding these features.

    • psych2l

It has daydream support. Go to settings > display > daydream and set Timely to start daydreaming once it is docked and/or charging.

      • quick

Thanks, forgot about Daydream! Works, and has a dim option in there too!

Still doesn't quite hide the onscreen buttons, but none of them do (best you get is the buttons are changed to faded dots, but the black bar remains)

  • Brittan Dopp
