Google Now is quickly becoming an excellent aggregator for all the information that most users need on a regular basis – be it weather, that day's schedule, tracking shipments, and so much more. Aside from its already-useful functionality, though, Google has been working towards making most actions voice-searchable. For example, you can tell Now to set a reminder, play a particular artist in Music, and more. Today's Search update brings more voice actions to existing functions, making it even easier get quick access to important information:

  • Flights: Ask Google “Is my flight on time?” to get info on your upcoming flights and live status on your current flights.
  • Reservations: Ask for “my reservations” to see your dining plans or “my hotel” to get your hotel name and address. With one tap, you can get driving or public transit directions straight there, saving you lots of steps.
  • Purchases: Ask for “my purchases,” and you’ll get the status of your current orders, so you know whether your mom’s birthday present will arrive on time.
  • Plans: Ask Google “What are my plans for tomorrow?” to see a summary of upcoming flights, hotels, restaurant reservations and events—very useful when you’re traveling.
  • Photos: Say “Show me my photos from Thailand” to see the photos you uploaded to Google+. You can also ask for “my photos of sunsets” if you want to show off the shots you’ve taken over the year; Google will try to automatically recognize the type of photo you’re asking for.

This update will be rolling out to users in the US over the "next few days" on smartphones, tablets, and even on the desktop.

We need voice actions in more languages... It can't be that hard to fix.

  • Jordan Khoviteri-Zadeh

I wonder how many of these will work outside of the States... :-/

EDIT: Wait, what? This entire update is US specific? That's crazy.

    • mesmorino

Come on now, are you really that surprised? As unlikely as it is, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Google released a US only version of Android itself

      • Baleeted

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie: USA ONLY.
        calling it now

        • RitishOemraw

AFter the US only Moto X that's not a bad call

          • Walkop

            We got it in Canada.

          • ShiroEd

            Same thing right?

          • Erik Tomlinson

Surprisingly, the Moto X will be available in Canada on Rogers.

Still waiting for Chromecast though. :(

        • CockShitMcFuckFace

          oh don't be silly
Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie: Mountain View, California only

    • Zargh

The majority of Voice Actions being US-only is probably going to continue until the EU antitrust thing boils over.

    • Ryan Stewart

The bigger question is, do any of you actually know WHY Google releases things to the US first? Its actually not that hard of a question to answer.

      • Pierre Gardin

FYI, people in the UK speak English too and had to wait for months for Knowledge Graph.

        • Ryan Stewart

          That actually wasn't my point.

People constantly bitch about someone not selling a phone in their country or not getting a media service or not getting something specific. I think most people are completely clueless to the fact that, even in this time of globalization, each nation is its own entity with its own rules, infrastructures and cultures.

I seriously doubt Google is going to pass on the opportunity to maximize marketshare/mindshare just because its racist against the Welsh. The more logical explanation would be that there might be some rules specific to your country they have to satisfy or partnerships with local entities before they can publish things.

          • Guest

"People constantly bitch about someone not selling a phone in their country or not getting a media service"

Then, reply to them and not to me, cause I didn't talk about phones or media services. :)

          • Ryan Stewart

The same rules apply. Possibly these updates require work with regional or local partners or they just need time changing aluminum to aluminium.

    • Matt

Everybody knows that flights and dinner reservations happen only in the US. Duh.

  • mfr118

These "staggered" roll outs need to stop.

    • Mark

As a developer, I disagree, they are a great feature.

What is needed is a way for users to register as test subjects. "sign me up to all the latest app updates from Google" setting or something.

      • skitchbeatz

As an enthusiast this would solve all of the problems of waiting.

      • mfr118

I stand corrected...something like a Google Guinea Pig sign up would be a great addition

      • http://www.bordersweather.co.uk/ Andy J

The stupid thing being - it actually exists, the whole sign up to the G+ community and then click a link on Play Store and you are signing up as a BETA user - I do it for Facebook already.

    • Adam Truelove

You're not a software guy are you? Releasing software to the public is the scariest thing ever.

      • Shitiz Garg

I swear, my perfectly working software manage to break on the first download...

I thought this already worked if you were in the Gmail Field Trial?
Edit: This is web-based, and I don't think it has anything to do with the app. It appears that Google is graduating parts of the Field Trial. Huzzah!

I hope the flight/reserveration/purchases commands will work with Google App account this time -- although I doubt they will.

  • Zak Taccardi

I just wish they would fix the listen to music commands, so they're usable.

I want to be able to say "Listen to Metallica on Shuffle", or "Listen to 'Enter Sandman' by Metallica"

    • Kenny O

And if not for everyone at least for Google Music all access subscribers. This feature would be invaluable in the car.

    • John Bailey

Except that Metallica isn't available on Play Music lol....Thanks Lars

      • Zak Taccardi

Haha, well you get my point

      • PamelaLibrarian

Wait, what? Metallica isn't available on Play Music??

        • Bjajjull

Nope. And Iron Maiden just disappeared :(

        • Baleeted

          It is. Screeny for confirmation

          • Matthew Fry

No albums. Just bits off of cover albums and collections. They can't control everyone.

        • Matthew Fry

You can get a few of their songs off collections since it is completely their money grubbing MO.

        • quick

Metallica isn't available on any subscription music service provider. Greedy pricks they are...

    • Jason Ruiz

that feature works perfectly for me. so far it hasnt let me down i could say any name of any song or any band or even play an album of my choice, and it does just that.

      • Zak Taccardi

If I say "listen to green day", it plays their self titled song, not a queue of all the songs by them. that's not very useful.

What happens when albums have the same name as a song, or another album?

    • Justin W

How about when I ask to play a song I have stored locally through Play Music, it doesn't try to stream it? :/

  • Jerrod Schultz

Haha!! CNET might have the wrong idea on Google Now...

    • http://www.modminecraft.com/ Nick Coad

Hahaha what the hell? Who fact-checks their shit?!

  • Zargh

On a side note, they really need to decide whether or not "Voice Search/Actions" and "Google Now" are a unified entity or not, then unify the marketing across all their products.

So far, it's only Motorola which is treating "Google Now" as a personal assistant which you address, Google Now's website and every other product update (Search, Glass, Chrome) is is still treating "Google Now" as the name for predictive cards, with Voice Search being separate function.

It's a nitpick but details matter. I wonder if they'll get it sorted out by the time they roll out Google Now (predictive cards) to Chrome.

  • Thomas’

BTW, does anyone else experience some animation lag in Google Now (for both, cards and the home button menu) since 4.3? It didn't experience it at all with 4.2 on my Nexus 4.

    • Jooyoung Hong

YES. haha i thought it was only me
when the cards come up they stutter..but it seems like it's coming up too fast.
weather card alone stutters, but when it's accompanied by map cards and other stuff stutter is less noticeable right?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

It's actually a server-side change. No app update necessary.

      • GreatNews

        thats cool

  • Matthew Fry

Google, show me pictures of... well... you know. It.

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Just FYI - no app update is needed - the changes are server-side.

    • Jdban

Possible to get that put in the main post?

  • mgamerz

Why is the Nexus 7 the 2012 edition? (unless these are older shots). Why doesn't it have the nav bar?

  • madmaglio

    "Navigate Home." please.

    • Tony Sarju

I've long waited for this. Seems like such a simple request too.

      • http://www.facebook.com/aarontrevor Aaron Sentell

        It's already available!

        • Tony Sarju

It doesn't work for me :( Just gives me a google search of "Navigate home"

My home address is indeed set in the settings.

          • madmaglio

Same here. I dunno what the deal is.

    • Robert Macri

This works... make sure you have your home set in the settings

    • Baleeted

I've just tried it and it works for me

      • Erik Tomlinson

Works for me too, in Canada... but it reads out my entire address like "navigating to one thousand two hundred thirty four, eighteen street enn-doubleyou" instead of "one two three four eighteen street northwest" for 1234 18 Street NW.

        • Jooyoung Hong

yeah..this has been working for a long time now. use it every day

  • Robert Macri

These new commands are working for me already. I tried the packages, calender and the photos. All worked.

  • Mr-Glass

Can you enlighten us on shipments?

  • Bleakvision

That's all nice and well but outside of the US and especially in different languages Google Now is still completely useless. When will bloggers start to point this out? The time has come to call Google out on this FAILURE.

    • rod_z

That!!! Google Now is VERY limited outside US.

  • Obi

It actually broke my google now. I can no long say "google" and have voice actions start

  • Obi

Has anyone else noticed they can no longer say "google" and get voice actions to start?
