Google is rolling out an update to the Android Play Store with version 4.3.10. The new update follows version 4.2.9 which was discovered on July 25th, only a week and a half ago, and brought several very minor changes. Unlike the previous update, 4.3.10 is more significant in user-facing features (yay, new stuff!).

What's New?

There's a new Ron in town, and it's me. Ron's not the only one capable of doing teardowns, and we've already scheduled a duel to sort it out once and for all (whoever lives gets to continue the teardown tradition at AP). But seriously, Ron and I have been both tearing down this update, and he's graciously let me do the honors today. Even Googlers are getting impatient, so let's get to it!

Recently updated section

The most significant and immediately obvious addition to the new Play Store is the Recently updated section. If you have a lot of apps installed like I do (218 and counting), you probably have some trouble navigating the mile-long list, especially when hunting down that one app that just updated and is now somewhere midway down the list. Or here's another scenario: several apps just got updated, but since you've cleared your notifications, you now have no idea which ones. This new temporary sticky area is perfect:

wm_Screenshot_2013-08-05-17-37-50 wm_Screenshot_2013-08-05-17-17-25 wm_Screenshot_2013-08-05-17-37-28

Combined update notifications

Because the new section above will conveniently let you know what has been updated recently, it only makes sense that the new Play Store 4.3.10 combines all the update notifications into one instead of displaying a list that could potentially get out of control, especially if you haven't updated in a while. Fantastic.

wm_Screenshot_2013-08-05-20-39-30

Book sales now show full list prices

Now can we finally have the same for apps? Amazon does it, why can't the Play Store?

Minor tweaks

The Buy and Rent buttons have swapped positions - now the Buy button is on top and Rent is on the bottom:

The Wallet logo is gone next to Rent/Buy buttons. Innnneresting. Is Google distancing Play from Wallet or just uncluttering the UI?

The update notification now starts with "Touch to update." Unfortunately, there is no other change in functionality - the notification isn't expandable, doesn't have action buttons, and doesn't save any taps as it still simply drops you into My Apps.

<string name="notification_touch_to_update_1">Touch to update %1$s.</string>
<string name="notification_touch_to_update_2">Touch to update %1$s and %2$s.</string>
<string name="notification_touch_to_update_3">Touch to update %1$s, %2$s and %3$s.</string>
<string name="notification_touch_to_update_4">Touch to update %1$s, %2$s, %3$s and %4$s.</string>
<string name="notification_touch_to_update_5">Touch to update %1$s, %2$s, %3$s, %4$s and %5$s.</string>
<string name="notification_touch_to_update_more">Touch to update %1$s, %2$s, %3$s, %4$s and %5$d others.</string>
<string name="notification_need_approval_1">%1$s needs your approval to update.</string>
<string name="notification_need_approval_2">%1$s and %2$s need your approval to update.</string>
<string name="notification_need_approval_3">%1$s, %2$s and %3$s need your approval to update.</string>
<string name="notification_need_approval_4">%1$s, %2$s, %3$s and %4$s need your approval to update.</string>

The Play Store may now offer to install Google Play Games if you're installing a Play Games-enabled game. I haven't been able to get this UI, internally called PlayGamesInstallView, to pop up - does anyone else have better luck?

<string name="play_games_install_suggestion_text">Your game will be downloaded and installed in the background. In the meantime, enhance your experience with the Play Games app:</string>
<string name="play_games_install_suggestion_bullets">• Play games with your friends<br/>• See what games they’re playing<br/>• Discover new games<br/>• Unlock and track achievements<br/>• Compare scores with other players</string>

The Settings screen now lists the active account and lets you tap it to bring up the account switcher:

wm_8-5-2013 7-11-07 PM

In My wishlist, the context Remove from wishlist button has moved from the top to the bottom of the menu (thanks, jazzruby!).

All Reviews now behaves like a button rather than a section header, meaning the whole row is no longer tappable compared to something like Users Also Viewed with the See More button (h/t Kirill Grouchnikov).

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing Play Store. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take weeks, download and install it just like any other APK and enjoy the new Play Store experience.

Thanks for the teardown! About your comment on the possibility of Google distancing itself from Wallet, isn't it more likely that they just wanted to unclutter the UI?

      Maybe. Maybe not.

      • mgamerz

Given the N7 doesn't have the chip, they cancelled the card, wallet is gone... gonna guess the mobile payment (NFC) is going to get axed and they're going to do something with Google Wallet, rebrand it or something.

        • cabbiebot

I'm not reading too much into it. At worst its a re-brand coming. It's not like they are going to do away with online payments. For an ad company, getting actual purchase data and history is manna from heaven.

        • Rob Cook

Right because, excuse me while I whip this out, I pay for everything with my 7" tablet? Come on, the N7 has no use case for Wallet unless you just have to prove your geek cred...

Installation of new updates from the notification area.

I haven't been able to screenshot this yet, as I haven't gotten my Play Store to pop up by itself notifying me of new updates, but the following new strings suggest that we'll be able to update apps with one tap right from the Play Store notification. In fact, even apps that need approval before updating seem to be supported.

If you managed to reproduce this, please post the screenshots.

      Hey Artem,

I uninstalled the updates to Maps and it prompted me with a "Touch to update Maps" notification.

However, upon clicking on the notification, I was redirected to the play store page of Maps and i had to click on the update button.

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Thanks, I've tweaked this section for now.

  • KRS_Won

Before this update, I only had the choice to rent Harry Potter. 🐒

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I checked - both Buy and Rent are present in 4.2.9.

      • KRS_Won

True now, maybe it was just when they showed up to Play?? I remember for sure, because I was going to buy and only had rent option.
But I just checked on my N7 (which hasn't updated) and I have the option to buy/rent.

    • squiddy20

I don't think you were imagining it. I was doing some browsing on the desktop version a few days ago, saw the promo for those movies advertising $1.99 (thinking it was to buy) and was disappointed when it was rent, and rent only.

      • KRS_Won

Thanks. That's why it stood out to me. Or at least thought it stood out. Lol

This is not related but does anyone know why My 2013 nexus 7 is stuck on build Jwr66n?? Every time I get the new update I try to install it and it fails

      • perfectlyreasonabletoo

        That's a bandaid, not a fix.

        • mant0x

There's thread about this problem in one of XDA 2013 NEXUS 7 forums where you can find an actual fix.

    • Telefunken

Try stopping the google services framework, clear data etc, then try the update again. You might have to do this a few times.

  • Alurio

The play store app keeps getting better and better.

The web store however is way worse than before.
Not showing current apps, can't update from the web, apps's pages frequently cut in half, reviews not showing in the apps's pages sometimes, way less helpful way of representing reviews. I hope google fix the play store soon.

I also want to ask if these play store APKs are beta versions meant for testing? and is it safe to download them? Are they final builds?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      They're final builds.

    • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

I just realized last week that the "Feature graphic" is no longer shown on the apps page. So, I've been resizing them and adding them as app screenshots now. :(

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, that part still boggles my mind. After pushing those for years, they just killed them without warning or comment.

        • Floss

They still give an option to post them in the dev account. Odd that they wouldn't take that out if they aren't even being displayed to the user.

      • Roger Siegenthaler

Thanks for the heads up :) I didn't notice at all...

  • North

Still hoping they change landscape to allow you to view the "what's new" of updated apps instead of unchanged permissions. Having to go into each app for each update is kind of silly. Especially since if permissions change I get a separate pop up.

  • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

    A few more updates.

Book sales now show full list prices.

The Settings screen now lists the active account and lets you
tap it to bring up the account switcher.

    • jazzruby

In 'My wishlist' when tapping the apps mini overflow menu the 'Remove from wishlist' is now shown below 'Install' | 'Buy'

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

        Confirmed, thanks.

        • PhilNelwyn

Speaking of this menu... it seems easier to open now, is it just an impression?

  • Danny Holyoake

    Thanks for the great article.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but could somebody explain how the new 'Recently Updated' section differs from the current 'Updates' section? Whenever I have app updates, the apps with updates will always be at the top of the list. So what's new about this?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

The new section lists apps that were recently updated, after you've already updated them.

      • Danny Holyoake

Ah, cheers for that. Sorry, it's 3am where I am. I probably shouldn't be on the Internet.

  • Chris

Is there a solution to not being able to touch "install" after downloading & attempting to install the new apk? Nexus 10, using "pure" Android 4.3. Play store is currently 4.1.6 (my Galaxy Nexus updated fine from 4.1.6, though it is Android 4.2 based (Cyanogenmod 10.1.2)).

    • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

Someone please give me a solution to this. Had to refund quite a few people 'coz they could perform install after tapping install. :(

      • Christopher Lee

The way most overlay apps go about solving this is by blacklisting certain apps and disabling themselves. Twilight is a good example of this.

    • GreenyO

Were you using ScreenFilter (or any app that put an "overlay" on the screen(Halo))) etc...) ?

      • Chris

No overlays to my knowledge. I've rebooted, I've tried briefly disabling the Security > Verify Apps and Security > Unknown Sources temporarily. No luck there. I can press the cancel button, but the install button never acknowledges a touch.

    • Eduardo Sandoval Salvatori

That would happen if you are using Lux Autobrightness or any other screen "overlay" as GreenyO stated before.
I don't know why, I just know that happens.

      • Chris

Appreciate the thought. I have no overlays installed to my knowledge. I will look over installed apps and double check though.

        • Chris

I did a quick test (this is with the Downloads built in app). I touch the bottom button in the initial screen (toggling Sort by Size / Sort by Date) in the area where the "Install" button will be (when I touch the .apk to install). It toggles the sort type, so I believe I can assume from that, it's not an overlay.

          • Christopher Lee

I'm pretty sure it's an overlay, but you're just not seeing it (might be a sub-feature). If Android detects that any app is drawing foreground elements, it will /specifically/ disable the Install button on any application install prompts and nothing else.

The way most overlay apps go about solving this is by blacklisting certain apps and disabling themselves. I'd try it again after force-stopping anything you see running.

          • Chris

Intriguing. Thanks for the insight. I had no idea about the specific install button disabling aspect of overlays.

With this in mind, I tracked down the application causing the issue for me. Rotate Screen Orientation (via xda forums). I had it set to force auto rotate (Ingress and a few other apps were forcing portrait orientation). Stopping the service associated with this app (or setting the app to use default rotation) allowed me to now press Install.

            Thank you gentlemen!

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Have you never used the Play Store on a tablet before? The My Apps button is not in the overflow menu, it's the down arrow that's sitting next to the search button. Been like that for years.

  • miri

I've updated and the Wallet logo is still next to the rent/buy button.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I tried this one both the Nexus 4 and the 2012 Nexus 7, and both had the Wallet logo removed. At the same time, the Note II and the 2013 Nexus 7 with the 4.2.9 Play Stores have the logo.

  • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

It has a new permission - "Modify system settings". (updating from 4.1.6 to this). Maybe that gives you any idea what else this update does..?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Indeed, I saw the new permissions but I'm not sure what they're used for right now.

  • victorvics

I would love to see Ron doing "Stock Android 4.3 isnt perfect." + issues in 4.2.2 that are fixed on 4.3

  • http://jamieellis.co.cc/ Jamie Ellis

Biggest Pet Peeve since Store 4.0 is Password!

"Password" - Needs to consider the option of bringing back pin option as an additional feature choice. (reverting to the pre Play Store 4.0 ability to set an Pin!)

Two Factor Authentication use could be a pain for those who have it active!

    • Gryph

You can still use your normal password if you have Two Factor Authentication.

    • http://www.bordersweather.co.uk/ Andy J

I have 2 factor auth and it want's my main account password not an app specific one. This makes sense to me - something as important as access to my wallet should be using the most secure password.

      • Thomas

He probably setup his phone using the app specific password.

        • Christopher Lee

Even still, the Google Play credentials aren't necessarily tied to an app-specific password. Having set up my devices (seven or eight of them) with a mix of app-specifics and "standard" two-factor, this would have bugged me to death if it were around.

        • http://www.bordersweather.co.uk/ Andy J

It doesn't matter, it still asks for the account password not the app password

Is incremental update still present in PlayStore app? For sometime now, I see that update always goes through all 100%, but earlier it could stop downloading for example at 70% and start installing immediately after this.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

      Yes, it's still there.

  • Ashok Soni

They still missed this imp feature. There is no way to know whether you purcahsed an app before or not unless u buy it unlike earlier versions where it shows you whether the app is refundable within 15mins or not refundable since you already bought and refunded it in past.

    • the_banned_one_returns

IS that really a common use case? I don't often buy and refund apps, so I don't know.

      • Ashok Soni

Well I do buy a lots of apps and games and sometimes I get refund if I don't like the app or game but I want to be informed in case I stumble upon the same app or game again so I won't buy it again cause then U can't refund it. This is really stupid of them to remove this feature.

  • Anon

Yuck, why do I have to see the mobile website on a tablet, and requesting it makes me go to the home page? Fix that, you should know better.

    • daburghit

If you're using Chrome for Android I think that's Chrome for Android's fault, not Android Police's fault. I could be wrong, though.

  • Mungo

The "recently updated" section has always been there for me. I'm running v4.2.3 of the Playstore and it looks just like in your Screenshot.
The old Market had it as well, can't remember it ever disappearing with the switch to Google Play.

    • Mungo

Ignore that, looking at that screenshot again I just realized you seem to be talking about recently *downloaded* updates, not recently released updates available for download.

  • Metroview

Yay no more Play Store update installation icons cluttering the statusbar. I'm not sure how it works with other launchers but with Nova Launcher they're now consolidated into one icon with a count instead. :)

    • nxym

why dont you remove that google search widget and make it clutter less.

    • fritish

      What icon packs are those?

Hmm. Apparently I'm only on 4.1.10. This is on a stock UK S3.

  • Jeremy MacMull

Is there a reason why this update wants to be able to send SMS messages ? A bit wary of apps that ask if they do not have a clear reason like this play store update just asked.

    • the_banned_one_returns

Google is going to text everyone you know when you purchase adult themed books, movies, or apps.

    • CoreRooted

It's part of Play Services. It can use a SMS message to validate your phone number for authentication.

    • The Phenom

Ads are more then likely the reason

  • catiremedina

Now if they just added a list of all the app/games I've purchased, wonder what the reasoning for taking that out was?

I hope they fixed the RPC:S-5 error. I have tried the internet solutions without success!

Log out your google account from My accounts in the Android Settings. And Re-Login.

      • Angmancy

Thanks I did that and did not work for me. I tried the other way of cleaning the play store/services cache but did not work either. I clean flashe Android 4.3 and it occured right away. Looks like they are still working on it https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/3095281?hl=en

        • Steve

Only remove your google account and add it again. This helps to me with no problem

    • jonathan3579

That's been a huge issue for me with my HTC One. I haven't encountered it yet with this new build though.

  • RTWright

The Recently Updated section is no different than the Updated section is now. My updated apps get listed at the very top as they show for this one ( I'm on 4.2.9 ) and I don't have to search for them at all. The only thing they did here as I can see is re-tag a few things differently and re-named the section. Eh, not a biggie, but seems that Google loves to do pointless changes like other companies do.

Personally I'd like to see a new section that would allow us to create a custom Favorites list done by Categories we set up so if and or when you have to do an update, you can do them in small batches by grouping them. Especially good for those of us with a lot of apps.

    • Ishaan Rajiv

Yes, but once you updated the app, it used to go back down to the main list (in alphabetical order.) Now, on the other other hand it remains at top, in a seperate tab even after updating..

      • RTWright

Yeah I still find it pointless though. Because as long as it's listed in "Updates" then to find out information on what has changed is just to select that app and read. Eh, Google, could do a lot better with their time.

        • Floss

It's useful for people who have auto update on

          • RTWright

Uh.... no... It's not. I have auto update on as well, half the time it doesn't work. I'll still get notifications that updates are available even when I have it set to do this automatically. There is so much they could do to the Play Store to make it a lot more useful than this is my main point. This was such a blah update.

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

And the other half the time it does work and auto-update. Plus, this change works nicely with the update notifications that are now combined.

          • Floss

Whether auto update actually works correctly has literally nothing to do with whether this addition helps it or not. It works great for many people. Nothing they can do will get 100% approval.

          • Chris

auto update is a bad thing

Okay I just check my Play Store and it's still on version 4.1.6. Good job Google. _|_

  • Simon Belmont

I didn't even have 4.2.9 yet. I still had the old 4.2.3 that came with the Android 4.3 update on my Galaxy Nexus.

I know Google stages the roll outs, so I guess that explains it. I'll sideload from the link above, so thanks AP.

  • Rigi

I'm getting "Can't open file" when I try to run the apk on my ATTGS4 running CM10.1 nightly. Ideas?

  • Zack Whitfield

Did this update remove Wishlist for free items? I used to use this to bookmark apps :(

  • 16bitz0r

Still waiting for 4.2.9 (current version is 4.2.3) on my N4 which is running 4.3 bone stock.

  • Rick Atherton

im not sure if this is new but its the first time i have seen it...

when updating several apps on mobile internet i got a pop up saying one was a big install and might be best to use wifi to download it and gives the option to skip the update

  • Jomari Sevilleja

hmm.Why my playstore doe not have movies, books and music. i only have apps.. why why why

    • Jomari Sevilleja

it is update from the link above..

      • Jooyoung Hong

i think it's a locale problem. your country doesn't have play movies/music/books yet?

  • GiantJay

My Sprint S4 is still on 4.1.6

  • jan klassan

This alp asks for a new permission to modify system apps. I'm waiting for the official update via playstore

    • chaizan

      Yeah do that cutie.

  • armshouse

I reckon Artem and Ron should do a teardown of the same application and post their own articles, and let us decide who found more and was better! That's the only way to settle the competition, a teardown showdown!

  • ankur850

too many updates once in a month

    • jOn Garrett

some complain about a lack of updates, make up your mind.

      • IHATEHIPSTERSSS

the updates just make it laggier =/

  • jOn Garrett

cant you guys put up NORMAL download links !! I hate all the garbage I have to click through to get to the damn file., seriously, spam adverts and other sneaky shit. just put up a simple link on a server somewhere so we can just grab and go.

    • BoB1673

      stop your bitching

  • Christopher Heuer

They STILL haven't fixed the amazingly broken "My apps" screen on the tablet. Why does it have to flash the app details every time it updates the installation progress?

  • Eloy Antunez

The Google wallet icon going missing hopefully will come to the rest of the app's ui. It's still in play music :(

  • REWard

Updates are great and as we know, usually needed (badly), just get better at updating the OS a little quicker, Verizon!!! But the new Play Store, while the recently updated area is nice, how about an option in the pop-up menu to "Clear Recently Updated List". Maybe I don't want to see it every time I open my Play Store!

  • idfc

Does anyone know how to get Google Play on a android tablet because it's not on here

  • JuggaloNinja

Where is the option to clear the recently downloaded section? It's great if you do a batch update and want to check the changelog's, but after that it's just another useless section that can be cleared for the next batch. 4.3.11 coming soon I hope

  • Latrent

Does anyone know just how temporary the Recently updated section is? Mine is showing apps that updated the day before yesterday.

Why wouldn't Google have added a third tab so we had: INSTALLED, RECENTLY UPDATED, and ALL?

    • JuggaloNinja

Great idea! Hopefully something gets implemented sooner rather than later. Tired of seeing the 9 apps that I updated 3 days ago.

  • Babylonbwoy

"Or here's another scenario: several apps just got updated, but since you've cleared your notifications, you now have no idea which ones."

ChangelogDroid is what you needed before this update : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cypressworks.changelogviewer.premium

  • rawru

How do you clear the "Recently Updated" in Google Play.

Stáhl jsem to, ale po spuštění se mi to zase hned vyplo. A mám navíc nedobrovolně zablokované google play services.
