Every online video service seems to be getting into the original content game these days. Hulu is no exception, and to celebrate the release of the superhero-themed animated comedy The Awesomes, they're giving away two months of free access to the premium Hulu Plus portal. That includes access to the Android app, which isn't available to free users. To redeem it, just head to this link and sign up.

This is a pretty big deal if you've been meaning to try out the less limited side of Hulu. The standard free trial period for Hulu Plus is just one week, and we've seen promotions of up to one month before, but this is the longest trial yet. Like the standard offer, you'll need to provide some credit card information or a PayPal account when setting up your information, and cancel your subscription before the two months are up to avoid being charged.

The show itself looks like a mashup of one of Fox's raunchy Sunday night cartoons and Alan Moore's Watchmen. It's written by Seth Meyers and produced by Mike Shoemaker, both Saturday Night Live alumni, and features the voices of quite a few SNL regulars. The jury's still out on whether the 10-episode series is any good, but you can probably expect a few references to The Ambiguously Gay Duo.

Souece: Hulu - Thanks, Kevin Ly!

Sorry Hulu Plus, but if I am paying a monthly subscription fee I don't want to have to watch commercials.

    • Michael Pahl

same goes for DirecTV, Dish network, and Comcast.... you pay and watch ads - thats life.

      • mechapathy

That's why we're trying to move away from that model. Hulu has simply taken the old model and slapped it on the web.

        • challenge_accepted

Not their fault the royalties charged can't be paid for with just a monthly subscription. You forget that hulu is owned by the networks. They aren't going to spend any money out of pocket.

          • mechapathy

Yeah, I get that. But it looks like an ouroboros situation to me. Hulu+ has far less subscribers than Netflix, so they have to show ads, so they have far less subscribers. Of course, that's not the only contributing factor to either problem; Accessibility isn't anywhere near the scale of Netflix.

          • Kenny O

The other issue I had was that there was a lot of content on regular Hulu that could not be viewed on Hulu Plus.....I understand why they had to do that, but it was disappointing none the less. At the end of the day, if you are comparing the cost and amount of commercials to traditional cable - yes, Hulu Plus is cheaper and has less commercial - but I when looking at it versus Netflix, Hulu Plus is just not on par.

          • mechapathy

Not to mention that Netflix has come out with 2.5 (I say 2.5 because Arrested Development doesn't exactly count) stellar original series this year. They're fighting the good fight, and I can get behind any company that's working to shift the paradigm of how we consume content away from outrageous cost for content we don't want.

        • Kenny O

Exactly. Netflix is $1 more, has better content and absolutely no commercials. I subscribed to Hulu Plus right when it came out, I could deal with a commercial at the start of the program....but when they started putting them in the middle I jumped over to Netflix and never looked back.

          • Matthew Fry

Completely agree. I was ok with the big commercial at the beginning but one of the reasons I don't have tv is commercials...

        • Joseph Cascio

I wasn't aware that the old model allowed for On Demand streaming. You know, not having to wait til a specific time, to watch a certain show, on a certain channel. Think of Hulu as an online DVR that doesn't require a subscription, but if you choose to, you can access they higher paid content, for a $7.99 monthly fee. With that said, I hate Hulu Plus and wouldn't even get it for free. Skipping this 2-month deal.

          • mechapathy

Most cable and satellite providers offer on-demand video content. Time Warner, Comcast, FiOS, DirecTV all do for certain.

          • Joseph Cascio

You didn't read what I said. "online DVR that doesn't require a subscription" meaning no cable subscription.

    • UniBroW

ad blocker ftw, honestly forgot that hulu plus had ads. I don't remember seeing any ads, while watching family guy, either when watching on my ps3.

      • challenge_accepted

Ad block doesn't block ads on hulu. Stoll shows a blank screen and it's actually 90 seconds because hulu knows you are using an ad blocker.

        • Matthew Fry

But at least it's not the same offensively loud commercial over and over.

  • david coffey

If you watching a 30 minute show, it's usually two or three 45 second segments of of commercials. Far better than the 8 or 9 minutes of commercials you get in a 30 minute show.

  • Justin Crowley

want a free month of hulu plus?
go to cancel your subscription and they will give you a free month to stay

also I love hulu, much cheaper than cable

  • turdbogls

i am doing everything i can to ditch cable. so this will give me a little extra "testing" to see how well i can do. Hulu Plus, netflix, watch ESPN, crackel....hope it works out.

now if only they would ALL support chromecast :)

    • Kenny O

I thought you couldn't use Watch ESPN unless you had a cable subscription?

      • D. Sharer

Yeah, he'll find out as soon as he cancels his cable subscription

        • Kenny O

My love of sports and the ability to DVR a sporting event and avoid commercials is the one big thing that keeps me from cutting out cable completely.

          • Matthew Fry

Remember the days of DVRs just not recording the commercials? Oh man. That was awesome.

          • Jeremiah Rice

            That's how they get you.

      • turdbogls

damn, i completely forgot about that. i need me some sports!!!

This looks like a great cartoon! It has that Family Guy feel to it. I hope it's worth switching to Hulu Plus!
